@Bob :/ i'm a moron
I assumed nginx would live in /var/www/html like apache did
do you know how to make nginx read from there?

Bob
@rlemon ...by changing the nginx.conf file?
or the site-specific file

7:22 PM
(this is my first time with nginx)

Bob
under sites-enabled in Debian. I believe CentOS has a more restrictive default
look for a location block

engine X is quite a culture shock when you first use it... especially if your first time using it is on SmartOS like me

Bob
eh, it was quite easy
the docs are pretty good

hrm
can't find a location block
lemmy look in the other conf files

Bob
@rlemon Would you feel comfortable pasting your nginx.conf here?

7:24 PM
it was in /etc/nginx/conf.d/default.conf
not in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf

Bob
and you're actually looking for the root directive, not the location block

    location / {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
        index  index.html index.htm;
    }

Bob
sorry :P

:P
okay

Bob
7:25 PM
well, that works too!
My current one has it outside location, hence my confusion :P
server {
        listen 80 default_server;

        #root /usr/share/nginx/html;
        root /var/www;
        index index.html index.htm;

        # Make site accessible from localhost
        server_name localhost;

        location / {
                # First attempt to serve request as file, then
                # as directory, then fall back to displaying a 404.
                try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
                # Uncomment to enable naxsi on this location
                # include /etc/nginx/naxsi.rules

so just change 'root XYZ' to 'root /var/www/html'

Bob
ya

noice

Bob
you might want to set up server_name if you want virtual hosts

What do you guys think about https with SNI? I'm considering putting in some code to detect IE on WinXP user agents and direct them to the http version of the site, but that'll only work if they're coming in on http in the first place.

Bob
7:27 PM
o.O
personally, I'd just say screw the XP users :P

Server Name Indication (SNI) is an extension to the TLS protocol that indicates to what hostname the client is attempting to connect at the start of the handshaking process. This allows a server to present multiple certificates on the same IP address and port number and hence allows multiple secure (HTTPS) websites (or any other Service over TLS) to be served off the same IP address without requiring all those sites to use the same certificate. It is the conceptual equivalent to HTTP/1.1 virtual hosting for HTTPS. To make use of SNI practical, it is necessary that the vast majority of users use...
@Bob google analytics says, that may not be a bad option

@Bob if I don't have custom error pages (yet) I suppose I don't change the root for the 400/500 errors?>

SNI, PFS, TLS 1.2, ECDSA, etc. should be default and all other disabled ;p

Bob
@rlemon hm?

don't cater to the lowest common denominator

7:28 PM
I'm curious to see how cloudflare's going to handle their https roleout. I can't imagine them not using SNI really, but if they figure out a way to do it without... that'd be cool.

Bob
@nhinkle you can set up a default site on the server that'll handle those requests that miss SNI
they'll get a certificate error, but that's their problem

    location / {
        root   /var/www/html;
        index  index.html index.htm;
    }

    error_page  404              /404.html;
    location = /404.html {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
    }

    # redirect server error pages to the static page /50x.html
    #
    error_page   500 502 503 504  /50x.html;
    location = /50x.html {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
    }
@Bob should I change the 404/500's root ??

Bob
...huh?

keeping in mind I don't have custom pages for it

Bob
I have no idea what you're asking...

7:29 PM
@Bob they actually get to my page, just with the wrong cert.

@Bob see the snippet above. that is from my conf. the error_page stuff
see how it has root defined for it as well
should I concern myself?

@allquixotic valid point. I don't test against IE6 anymore. Most of my sites look like shit on IE6 in fact.

Bob
shrug
I've commented out all that stuff

I support the latest version of all browser and latest 2 ie

@rlemon Well heck, that's only IE11 and IE10 at this point!

Bob
7:32 PM
        # Only for nginx-naxsi used with nginx-naxsi-ui : process denied request
s
        #location /RequestDenied {
        #       proxy_pass 127.0.0.1:8080;
        #}

        #error_page 404 /404.html;

        # redirect server error pages to the static page /50x.html
        #
        #error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html;
        #location = /50x.html {
        #       root /usr/share/nginx/html;
        #}
keep in mind that these are my test and personal servers
an important production server would almost definitely want a different config

thanks @Bob
much appreciated

Bob
@rlemon not gonna obfuscate that email? :P

no
bots are good enough now to break that shit and gmail spam filters work

I've been getting a shitload of spam lately, but gmail dutifully catches it all!

yea I'm not concerned
:P besides if anyone wanted it goto my github
there it is

Bob
7:39 PM
@rlemon I've found enough legitimate email gets filtered to spam that I still have to check it now and then :\

ahh, not me
I've lost I think two in my lifetime (that I know of)

Bob
then there's the "C..A N_A_D_I-A-N-__ M-E_D..I_C..A T..I O..N S" and "S A..F-E.. &_..F_A..S-T---..P_E N-I..S..__-E..N L A_R-G..E-M-E N T"
Let's not forget the "The Highest Grade Medications And EXTRA LOW Price", because who doesn't want to eat crap from extremely questionable sources?

@Bob so it's not just me who's been getting a ton of emails like that recently?

Bob
@nhinkle Yea. I've managed to avoid spam with this account for years.
Had to end sometime.
I believe they finally started using the addresses from the Adobe leak.

Hmmm. that's possible.

Bob
7:42 PM
Funny that I've managed to avoid spam for half a decade on a whole bunch of questionable sites, but Adobe is the culprit.

I was never signed up for adobe with my main gmail account.
So I'm not sure about that hypothesis.

Bob
@rlemon I lost a billing reminder recently for my server. And a couple emails from uni.
@nhinkle There's a few other sites that were compromised recently.

strange
I rarely lose anything, and rarely does anything sneak past the filter that is spam

Bob
You can check against some of them => haveibeenpwned.com
(and that site is trustworthy, AFAIK. The creator is a rather well-known security researcher)

> Good news — no pwnage found!

Bob
7:46 PM
@rlemon I end up checking once every 3-4 days.
Generally, that's enough to catch anything important.
But I did miss one, once. That was bad.

Allegedly I have no pwnage

guys, is this a valid superuser question: "why does crystal reports suck so much"
or is software not supported on superuser ;)

Bob
...what is "crystal"?
also, "why does X suck" isn't an objective question

bah

Bob
it's opinion-based, and generally a rant-disguised-as-a-question
if you have a specific problem with how to use it, you can ask that

7:52 PM
nah I'm just tired of trying to work with this software, no worries :P
