@Rahul2001 telnet

@satibel telnet can send post requests?
@Bob Disabled at school

Bob
@Rahul2001 So? Just download the standalone zip

@Rahul2001 telnet sends whatever you ask it to.
type :
telnet [ip/address] [port]
the port is generally 80
then type your post request.
POST /path/script.cgi HTTP/1.0
From: frog@jmarshall.com
User-Agent: HTTPTool/1.0
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
Content-Length: 32

home=Cosby&favorite+flavor=flies
example

@satibel Okay, thanks!

you should be able to use
telnet [ip/address] [port] <[file]

6:18 AM
Yep :D
Hm, I can use netcat to also do the same thing, right?

probably, but telnet is already included with windows.

@satibel It's disabled by default

not on XP
:p

Eh, school has 8.1 and 10

wow

6:21 AM
Yep :-)
We're getting new PCs assembled as we speak, it's holidays right now, but being the geek that I am, I'm sitting in school, setting up a renderfarm

x)
I had found a breach in my high school security, and was tempted for some time to use it as a botnet
~700 computers on a gigabit connection, what could possibly go wrong?
also putty is portable and can do the trick. stackoverflow.com/questions/7553005/…

Bob
@Rahul2001 Whitelist or blacklist?

@Bob it's just not installed

Bob
Blacklists are absolutely trivial to bypass. Whitelists are harder.

not blacklist nor whitelist, just it isn't installed.

Bob
6:27 AM
@satibel I'm asking about their filtering policy in general.
If it's a blacklist, just grab some random standalone copy. Or DIY.

@Bob It's disabled in Windows
I can possibloy use PuTTY

@Rahul2001 Can you execute programs from a USB stick?

Bob
@Rahul2001 If you can just run arbitrary programs (i.e. there does not exist a whitelist), then just grab powershell ffs
or curl if you must

@Bob Wha... Just, uh, copy powershell.exe? Does that even work?
@GypsySpellweaver I can, yes

Bob
trying to manually construct an HTTP req w/ telnet is just ... a bad idea for anything except a learning experience and a lesson in what not to use for anything remotely serious

6:35 AM
Try using PortableApps portableapps.com with Putty on it portableapps.com/apps/internet/putty_portable

@Bob Well, this isn't very serious.

Bob
@Rahul2001 No. Go to the link I gave you. Download the standalone zip corresponding to your OS version. Extract. Run.
@Rahul2001 By "serious" I mean anything you intend to use more than once in your life.

@Bob Ah...

Bob
telnet et al. for HTTP requests is useful for one of two things:
1. Learning how HTTP works
2. Maybe some lightweight debugging of a server issue
It should never, ever, be incorporated into a larger script/system for use

@Bob I just need to let the server know when the render is complete

Bob
6:37 AM
@Rahul2001 And depending on the server it might not work not or it might not work if the server ever changes or ...

@Bob telnet is great if you want to try stuff that isn't really HTTP on an HTTP Server

Bob
Even the example request you were given might not work - lots of servers now require at least the Host header
Which @satibel's example did not include

@Bob Eh, I control the server

Bob
You might miscalculate Content-Length
God forbid TLS ever become necessary

Using PortableApps you can make a stick with all your programs, even email and browser, with the files and bookmarks saved on the stick, not on the computer you plug it into.

Bob
6:38 AM
Here, you have two (three) choices:

@Bob true I "might" (I will) "miscalculate" Content-Length (to find some buffer under/overflows.)

Bob
1. Waste time and effort on a fragile solution with telnet/etc.
2. Use an existing library/program (curl, wget, etc)
PS was the 'third' because while it's technically much heaver than curl it also gets you away from cmd and its terrible scripting environment
@GypsySpellweaver I've never really trusted PA, tbh. The people packing the programs don't always do agreat job - I've seen reg entries and temp files left over.

fun stuff: in my university they knew when we were using a live cd, because it messed with the network.

Bob
If you want something properly isolated, Spoon is more reliable (and pricier?)
PortableApps is half-arsed in comparison

user226528
@satibel And the UTC clock.

Bob
6:42 AM
Except for the few programs that natively support a portable mode anyway
@Rahul2001 Basically, you have a number of ways you can do it. Telnet is probably the worst of all available options.

@Bob He's not trying to hide from the system, just trying to use tools they don't have enabled/installed.

Bob
There is literally no advantage to doing so.
@GypsySpellweaver Yes, in which case any standalone program would work, and PortableApps is still fairly pointless
About the only thing they do decently is the browser. Which probably isn't necessary either, here.

I used thinapp because it was free with the vmware partner program.

@Rahul2001 If all you want to do at the moment is send a POST to the server, why not create a webpage locally that has the proper <form > in it and let that do the POST, with all it's length calculations and such.
Click SUBMIT when it's done, and it sends the POST for you.

Bob
Which isn't scriptable.
Well, it's sorta-kinda scriptable but if you try to create an auto-submitting webpage purely to launch from cmd, while ignoring all the better ways, I'm gonna find a way to go over there and slap you

7:00 AM
@Rahul2001 Python + requests the last time I mucked with it
and if I could do it...
and IIRC you can compile python to an exe too

Bob
Or you could just, y'know, run python raw, because apparently there's actually no restrictions on these systems
but that's even more overkill
in terms of complexity? curl wins. always.

@Bob wasn't there someone asking about that sorta thing a few days back?
I think I confused the hell out of him

Bob
if you actually need to manipulate the data? toss-up between bash+curl, powershell, python. depends what you want to do.
actually making a web request in python has a fair bit of boilerplate
parsing text in bash/coreutils is alright but not great
powershell syntax sucks
pick your poison
python is better for complex stuff, which makes the boilerplate worth it
powershell is more in line with windows tools in general (and iwr is close enough to curl), bash is more in line with linux tools
cmd should be avoided as long as there's an alternative that's not VB-based
@JourneymanGeek I don't remember

@GypsySpellweaver Gonna have to automate it... VBS? :P
@Bob VBS XD
@Bob I've been unable to get wget to send a POST request. Been trying since yesterday

@JourneymanGeek Could that have been the one trying to download data about test scores (Olympiad)?

Bob
7:15 AM
@Rahul2001 Use curl then?

Yeah that guy

Bob

Q: How can I use wget to send POST data?

AshishI want to make following POST request to my server using wget: email=abc@abc.com&file1=@FILE_HERE&file2=@FILE_HERE In the above request, there are three POST parameters called email , file1 and file2 where email contains email of user and file1 , file2 contain a file. How can I send it using...

@Rahul2001 ew. download that powershell zip. extract it. use powershell. ditch vbs and never speak of it again.

@Bob batch isn't vb based :3

@JourneymanGeek Ever find out it he was getting his own test scores or trying to gather several student's scores?

Looked like the later.
Well all the students

7:18 AM
Too much PII involved, and I left.

Bob
@satibel "batch" is cmd

oh, I didn't understand what you said well enough.

Bob
and it is the most ridiculous thing I've seen. it closes and reopens the file every line. it expands variables at parse time
it's just full of wtfs
the real wtf is people trying to create anything more complex than a list of commands in it

@Bob depends if you have delayed expansion or not

Bob
(...and, yes, I am one of those people)

7:24 AM
you can have "functions" in batch, that's already good enough 😋

Bob
@satibel I'm aware of the ways around it.
doesn't bring it out of the "wtf" category

also you can do some ugly tricks by modifying the code while it runs.

@Bob Feels like we need a car analogy ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't know enough cars :(

@Bob I don't know enough powershell :(

Bob
7:28 AM
cmd is a reliant robin someone tried to turn into a convertible by cutting the top half off

I've made a batch that makes a task paralellizable on multiple computers using a shared file as a lock. the real wtf it that it works reliably.

Bob
@Rahul2001 you're better off learning ps than vbs, tbh

@Bob That's... probably true

user226528
Is it just me, or has there been a surge in the number of review audits today?

user226528
And here comes another... What kind of sane person would think this question is unclear? superuser.com/review/close/638748

7:42 AM
morning

Bob
hoot

user226528
Hi.

@Bob jerk ;)

Bob
:P

user226528
Now, now! Be nice. He's your friend. (Or maybe she. I don't know.)

7:50 AM
@FleetCommand i did add a smiley....

user226528
@Burgi And I didn't flag your comment for moderator's attention.

i put the radio on and it drowned out the owl
its sometimes hard to gauge you @FleetCommand :)

user226528
There an old saying:
The dog that barks doesn’t bite.

that is an odd turn of phrase

user226528
Yeah. But JG loves canine speech.

8:02 AM
the workplace HNQ always make me despair at humanity

user226528
Why?

Q: How do I convince my employer to take my mention of resignation seriously?

Brandon PodgorskiI've had huge work life balance issues with my boss over the past year or so, as noted in previous posts. For background, it's a small company and I'm the only employee. Finally after giving a few points and ultimatums about 6 months ago, nothing has changed, and I don't feel it will meaningful...

user226528
Well, I have said it in this chatroom before: I left and never returned. So, I am sure I am taken quite seriously.

that was pretty much my reaction

@FleetCommand barking dogs do not bite. For if they bit you, they'd have their mouth full

user226528
8:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks, I guess.

heh
Picked up watchdogs 2....

i still haven't played the first one yet

the game world is rediculously huge (to the point where I use fast travel a lot, and I don't use the fast travel much in open world games) and unlike the first one, the main charecters arn't total sociopaths
and for someone who hates jumping puzzles, environmental puzzles are awesome.

8:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek Watchdogs :P

@Rahul2001 played that, sleeping dogs....

I get a tooth extracted today :(

you are 15, why on earth are you getting a tooth out?

@Burgi braces
Get another tooth out on thursday

fair enough

8:34 AM
@Burgi It's gonna hurt :(
I had an intense make out session today though, so that should get me through it :P
2

._.

._.
@Bob :-(

@Burgi I got 4 teeth out at the same time when I was 15 (because they were sideways.)

Eww wonky teeth people

Bob
8:47 AM
@TOWMN ?
@Rahul2001 ._.

@Bob vbs is the first visual scripting language I learnt
Oh @bob, I bought an i9506

Bob
@TOWMN o.O

@satibel Does it hurt a lot?

Bob
S4?

I had an extra tooth pulled out from behind a premolar

8:49 AM
@Bob yeah. LTE-A edition

Bob
Ugh. Every time I see a comment that tells people to reseat their network cards I have to double-check the question isn't asking about decade-old hardware.
Heck, decade-old hardware would have onboard ports.
@TOWMN any particular reason? :S

@Bob I broke the screen on my S4 again, and figured it was too much effort and not worth the time to fix it again so I'd just replace it
And both my second and third SIMs are on networks that use LTE-A CA

how you breaking em

Bob
@TOWMN With another S4? :S

i've had a s4 for like 3 years and not broke it once :/

8:53 AM
So I figured I might as well, instead of switching SIMs every time I want to use CA on my backup phone

Bob
Why not a newer phone? :P

It's only Cat 4, but my secondary networks only use Cat 3 and Cat 4 anyway so it works out perfectly fine
@Bob yeah probably not the best choice given how many S4 displays I've broken. But I'll buy a screen protector this time.

Bob
@TOWMN how much did it cost?

Well it's cheap, does everything I need, and is small enough not to be obtrusive. Also the whole Samsung service mode advanced debugging functionality

@Rahul2001 a bit, but more annoying is needing to only drink.

Bob
8:54 AM
@TOWMN Oh yea. The service mods is a big point for it. I still haven't figured out how to do that on the Xperia -_-

@TOWMN I suggest the cheapest klunkiest case you can find

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Just glue a few pieces of styrofoam to it

@Bob £70-ish? Used obviously.

Bob
@TOWMN Huh. Nice.

@Bob I remember reading a guide somewhere to do it on xperias but now I got my xperia back I can't find it for the life of me

Bob
8:56 AM
@TOWMN lemme know if you ever find it

@Bob my more-than-decade-old-hardware had two on board network ports but I added a third with a PCI card anyway when I turned it into a router/server

Bob
the only thing I use that phone for is a hotspot anyawy
$600 hotspot -_-
But hey it does cat9/3xCA and dual-SIM and supports all the bands I need

I tend to find all the newer phones with LTE-A are either excessively large flagship phones or expensive Xperia X Compacts
@Bob lol
3xCA clearly isn't enough in Oz.

@Bob I have a few network cards lying around
Fast ethernet ._.

Bob
It was also like the only cat9 phone that did dual-4G/3G

8:58 AM
That or it's backhaul limited. I need more inside knowledge on AU mobile networks I think

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, I do too
but it's not something to assume for random $asker

I have a few lying around but no main board I can plug them in to

Though if I go the DIY router route, I'm going the aliexpress quad-port route

Bob
@TOWMN Pretty sure it's backhaul limited
You can see speeds take a sharp dive around peak hour

@TOWMN I have something I can use, other than the lack of video card.

Bob
8:59 AM
it gets worse if there's a delayed train

Oh I do have a USB GbE adapter or two, for my old Lenovo convertible that didn't have an Ethernet port

Bob
on that one day when they basically shut down trains for a few hours, LTE was basically unusable

@Bob weird. Then again Aus is pretty much expected to be the opposite of the UK

@TOWMN I was toying with buying one for the Stealth

Bob
9:00 AM
@TOWMN Funnily enough, I recently got one just for my Lenovo convertible...

Here they don't bother deploying CA or more than 20Mhz BW unless the backhaul is upgraded first.

Bob
but it's only 100mbit

Usually means minimum of GbE and usually only 10GbE sites get 3x20 CA

Bob
@TOWMN oh they're actually smart about it? :P

@Bob no, just the opposite of Aus about it
"smart" would be to deploy CA on spectrum limited sites too not just places where it's easy to fit 10GbE

9:02 AM
the menu shows +5
i click, and I've got two +10s o_O
how do you even get a +5?

question upvote
iirc

@JourneymanGeek yep

If it were "smart" I wouldn't have situations where I'd go from 3Mbps to 220Mbps by waving my finger

Bob
@TOWMN -_-
well, waving finger's better than tapping finger, I guess

@TOWMN what is CA?
for me it's either CyanoAcrylate or Certificate Authority

Bob
9:14 AM
@satibel Carrier Aggregation (see: LTE-A)

@satibel creepy asians
@Bob well tapping finger is more consistent and controllable

@TOWMN do you resemble that remark?

@JourneymanGeek yes
@MichaelFrank What if I already do?
@MichaelFrank @Bob I asked my first question!

Q: How do I level up my CPU?

qasdfdsaqI want to level up my CPU. Bob's motherboard has a keybot that converts a keyboard into a level up controller Unfortunately my motherboard doesn't have a keybot or a button to level up. Is it possible to level up my CPU? If so, how? What is the max level my CPU can reach (level cap)? Do I nee...

9:37 AM
flagged as off topic... ;)

@Burgi It's related to computer hardware or software (or both)
How is it off topic?

Is it April first?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek It is close. 3 days now.

user226528
@Burgi How comes I don't see your flag?

@JourneymanGeek Shit, I should have waited shouldn't i
But it was topical! We were talking about it last night before I went to bed.

9:46 AM
i was joking

Oh hey, it was autotagged with Performance

user226528
(mutters to himself in Mordor language)

No wait that was Burgi

level up was too obscure

But that's what the keybot says it is!
How would I know it had to do with performance? :-P

9:50 AM
If I understand it correctly you need a motherboard that supports KeyBot. You have said that yours doesn't support this. — Burgi 24 secs ago

But I want to level up :-(
Aww why do I get -2 rep for my question even though it has no upvotes or downvotes?

user226528
Flagged it as unclear...

A: How does USB Type-C work for graphics

qasdfdsaq Are there dedicated USB Type-C graphics cards? Yes, but this is not relevant. The USB type C connector was designed to be flexible and carry non-USB signals. In this case a USB type C connector is being used to deliver graphics to the monitor using alt-mode DisplayPort. USB-C also supports (...

Yay my second answer this year
Will this one HNQ too?
Aww my pretty graphics don't make it into the onebox
I'm not actually sure but it looks like Type-C will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds when using DP alt mode
@Bob knows these things, what does @Bob think?

user226528
This one is cute: A guys asks "In what versions did major browsers drop support for NPAPI plugins?" He claims to have searched Wikipedia and other Superuser questions. Then he answers his own question. But it has less info than the Wikipedia article to which he has linked.

@FleetCommand YYour face is unclear

Q: In what versions did major browsers drop support for NPAPI plugins?

pzkpfwFrom Wikipedia: Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) is an application programming interface (API) that allows plug-ins (more specifically, browser extensions) to be developed for web browsers. It was first developed for Netscape browsers, starting in 1995 with Netscape N...

@FleetCommand The point of SU answers is to answer the question, not to quote entire Wikipedia articles
If i asked a question about PMR vs SMR I'd want an answer to tell me the differences, not to give me all the detail on giant magnetoresistance from Wikipedia

user226528
@TOWMN But he demonstrates lack of sufficient research. It is a ground for downvote.

aliexpress logic:
1 pcs: free shipping
2 pcs: 1.5€ shipping
bought 2 x 1pcs: free shipping

Oh wow it's gone from 0 to -6 in 6 whole minutes
Wait how does Burgi have so many more badges than me?

user226528
I swear this chatroom had an "ignore" feature. Why do I not find it?

10:01 AM
Click name => Click ignore

@FleetCommand click on avatar (it's at the bottom)

Ignore the "Everywhere", it doesn't actually ignore everywhere

:D

Urgh Windows scaling messing with my screenshots
Unfortunately there's no way to hide/ignore users on the main site, unless you write your own script to do it
I should probably get round to that already, just so I can go back on the main site and peruse stuff to answer without worrying about Ramhound trolling me in the background
Funny how the other guy looks over like ":-o"

10:28 AM
@TOWMN FWIW, your timing was perfect. I was on walkies.

10:58 AM
@allquixotic Depends on the benchmark
@JourneymanGeek Hey it's totally clear what I'm asking, I want to do the CPU Level UP like it says in the photo
