Not me :/ The Wayback Machine doesn't have it either
It was tagged [security] [winapi], lived from 2016-11-10 09:48:44 to 2016-11-10 15:44:48, and had a score of -2 at deletion, if any of that is helpful (thanks SEDE!)

@Bob You haz no 10k? :-o

Bob
@TOWMN not on SO, I only have like 3 answers there... which gather a surprising number of points for how shitty they are
@BenN it was linked from TONT so I was curious :P

He has about 3.5k
@Bob I have one answer. Which isn't that great. But people get panicky whenever it breaks

Bob
lol

@Bob Yeah I've gotten used to my shitty answers getting HNQ'd for some reason

12:13 AM
also, @Bob has 1337 reputation on MSE.

He needs 1 rep on SF

here's clearly not got a 1337 reputation as a sysadmin.

Yet.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think I screenshotted that before :P
@TOWMN Obviously I need to accept and then downvote an answer :P

@Bob lol yeah that
> A North Carolina man pleaded guilty Friday to weapons-related charges for a December episode in which he stormed a Washington, DC pizzeria and fired rounds from a Colt AR-15 assault-style rifle. The incident was a bid to "self-investigate" an unfounded conspiracy theory concerning the restaurant's basement being the secret headquarters of a nonexistent child sex-trafficking ring whose (again, nonexistent) members included Hillary Clinton and her inner circle.

Blaine...And I mean extreme. A friend's power brick broke, so they decided to cut off the wires, plug the magsafe in to the laptop, and the other end directly in to the outlet. > A friend's power brick broke, so they decided to cut off the wires, plug the magsafe in to the laptop, and the other end directly in to the outlet. Obviously, this fed 220 volts AC in to what should have been a 16.5 volt DC device.

Ouch

Aww, 'lol' isn't a long enough answer. :(

@Bob This is what happens when you read too much 4chan/reddit/donald trump/right wing blogs and own a Colt AR-15 assault-style rifle?
(And live in 'Murica)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it... gets worse
> My friend actually did it twice, and both times resulted in a bang
just whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

12:35 AM
If at first you don't succeed...

> I don't want to brick a power adapter by plugging it in to a damaged device

Bob
@TOWMN to be fair, the guy saying that isn't the dumbarse who decided to feed mains directly into a laptop...

> My friend actually did it twice, and both times resulted in a bang (apperently magic smoke is reusable!), so I assume that even if the failsafe worked the first time, it failed the second time, or there wouldn't be another explosion.
Magic smoke is reusable? :-o
TIL

Bob
it's entirely possible that the, ah, surge welded something and caused a permanent short (which would at least trip a fuse if not outright destroy a working charger)

@Bob Yeah but I can't think of any scenario that would fry a power adapter
Just about any modern/safe/not-shit power adapter will have short circuit protection, it's a pretty basic feature
Along with over-current protection, or in the case of a Mac, probably "Refuse to do anything until communicating with an authenticated proprietary Apple chop" protection

Bob
12:38 AM
@TOWMN should* have short-circuit protection :P
tbf Apple probably at least designs their adapters properly
but I've used ... dodgy ... ones that'd be happy to melt the cable

I'm fairly confident some form of short circuit protection is a basic requirement for passing EU/US safety requirements
@Bob Is your proximity to Asia increasing the dodgy imports?

Bob
@TOWMN ... well, grey imports, so... yes? :P
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't pass any kind of inspection
Though, I only ever had one of those dodgy adapters. It was a temporary thing while hunting for a proper one.

@Bob greyly imported power adapters shouldn't be dodgy though

Bob
Only one for a laptop. Still got a couple of dodgy USB chargers hanging around, they make nice heaters
@TOWMN when imported from China by way of random ebay seller...
But yea I've gotten into the habit of actually opening them up and checking that they have a PTC

@Bob well as I say, proximity to China may increase chance of a dodgy/counterfeit adapter
Buying a generic/cheap/unbranded import isn't so much a grey import as a black import

Bob
@TOWMN true...

I have a non-official old thinkpad adaptor somewhere
its for a model we don't have any more, and I'd be happy to dismember it if I can find it ;p

Don't dogs just chew on things anyway?

... no?

AIUI a grey import is when you import a legitimate product intended for a different market through unofficial channels, for example like a US iPhone in Kangaroo land.

12:53 AM
I think you have your canines and lagomorphs confused.

Oh it was mice that chew through everything. Never mind.
Just confused because you dogs smell the same as mice and rats.
Probably all the generic sewer dogs in Thailand
Dammit I'm lonely. Need to find someone to adopt me.

chewing on random stuff is a puppy behaviour or is a sign a dog's neurotic

> People (and lab rats) without their teeth or with otherwise impaired chewing ability become demented much more quickly than controls, apparently because the mechanics of chewing help stimulate or oxygenate certain parts of the brain. No word yet as to whether you can become a super-genius by chewing everything all the time.

where is that mop head going?!
c'mon HP...
"Please generate a battery check with the HPSA"

"That code is wrong..."
"But..."
"It's correct."

I picked up watchdogs 2. It has the most important feature a open world game can have... the ability to pet random dogs on the street.

:D

@BenN Thanks. My afternoon productivity dropped faster than [insert inappropriate joke about things falling from great heights].

3:05 AM
So HP are having a laugh with the price of a replacement battery...

3:54 AM
Oo

4:34 AM
@MichaelFrank I hope that's for work - and even then, do you really need the dude to come out when you can just drop a battery in yourself?
50 Wh is tiny - laptop sized

@MichaelFrank Makes me realize what I was worth when I was doing Dell service calls. My cut was only $32/call and the fuel was my expense not theirs.

@allquixotic Yea, and I bet the "discount" that's on there will disappear when I tell them I'm certified to do HP workstation repairs. :P

@MichaelFrank Then they'll charge you double for your time.

5:20 AM
...not that I plan to get ME Andromeda, but this underscores the need for a PC upgrade soon.
Most of the regulars here are using desktops with high-end graphics cards. I really hope I can start building within the next few weeks...

@bwDraco What parts are you going to upgrade from and to?

All-new machine, going from three-year-old gaming laptop to custom-built, (probably) Ryzen-based multipurpose desktop. Graphics by GeForce GTX 10.
The biggest concern with going Ryzen, though, is inconsistent performance due to a combination of microarchitectural deficits compared to Intel and unoptimized software.
The machine will get fast memory, because Ryzen needs fast memory to perform optimally.
I'm waiting for Ryzen 5 before pulling the trigger.

@bwDraco Do you have to go with Ryzen now? Could you build with one step down and wait for the Ryzen 5, then swap CPUs. New, better box now, and promise of much better later.

I'm expecting to get a Ryzen 5 1600X and intend to upgrade, possibly with motherboard replacement, several months to a year later.

How fast do you go through computers?
I've had the same one for over a decade, hope to keep the next one just as long.

5:32 AM
Normal replacement cycle is about 4 years for a good laptop and 5-7 years for a desktop.

@bwDraco Industry normal, or your "normal" cycle?

That's my normal.

Not too bad I guess. Better than a new one for every iteration of the CPU.

Maybe less for a desktop, though. It's based on how long the platform lasts, and the AM4 platform has at least 4 years left on it (Z270 probably has less than two years left).
Intel socket LGA1151 is expected to get two more CPU generations with minor improvements; Coffee Lake is next. I'm thinking 18 months or so before the socket is retired.

I'm slowly saving funds, and collecting parts, to replace mine. Had a nice chat in here with lots of good pointers about that.

5:39 AM
Incremental upgrades can range from CPU, graphics card, and (likely) motherboard replacement, to more radical changes like adding a custom liquid cooling system.
(current plans call for AIO liquid cooling)
It's getting very late here. Good night.

My upgrade will be an almost new build. Keeping the PSU, and some HDD.
@bwDraco Ta-Ta

Bob
@bwDraco And like @JourneymanGeek said, unless you happen to want to game on 4k, you don't need a "top-end" card.

@MichaelFrank faster than... My grades in high school
Hellooo!

Bob
Even if you think you 'might' want to, unless you have immediate plans to do so it's probably a better idea to stick with a GTX 1060 or RX 480 for now, and upgrade later.
There's still not many good options for 4k60 gaming, tbh...
@bwDraco ^
Saves you some money now and you can get an actually good card (for 4k) in a year or two if you need it :P
@GypsySpellweaver not much special in new CPU iterations these days. Ryzen was the first big thing in like 7 years
The more interesting side is the platform (chipset/mobo/socket). Got some new things like DDR4, PCIe 3.0, USB 3.0/3.1, etc..

5:55 AM
@Bob Those are the type of things I'm looking to get in my new MOBO, w/o going high-end CPU.

Well, if I can wait a little longer, I might see some newer, better motherboards that will avoid the need to replace the motherboard (and go through Windows activation hassles, despite recent improvements).
Ryzen and the AM4 platform are still too young and motherboard issues are very common.
I'm not sure if this can wait until 2018, though.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver yea, I'm actually slightly regretting not getting a board with more PCIe slots. More slots => you can add a card later instead of another new mobo

I seriously need to go to bed. Good night.

Bob
@bwDraco go to sleep, we'll be here in the morning :P
@bwDraco Yeaaaaa... I still don't care much for 'gaming' laptops. You don't need a high-end desktop build to wallop a 'good' 'gaming laptop'. Heck, you might not even need a mid-range one to do that.

Further discussion and research could change things. But, for the nonce, looks like I'll be shooting for the AMD APU line, A10 likely.

Bob
5:59 AM
@GypsySpellweaver In which case, waiting for the new gen is definitely a good idea. The previous ones are still on a significantly worse arch, IIRC.
Even with Ryzen (which doesn't do iGPUs), Intel remains the only decent mid-high iGPU option.
The current AMD APU line is mostly mid-low.

I'm... Not even that mad about gaming. I have a gaming laptop but I only ever use the graphics card to render files for a friend

@Bob I'm mostly "mid-low" myself. Graphics is the least of my issues. No games, and one movie every 45-60 days.
Only "graphics" is my GUI.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Sorry, I meant mid-low CPU.
IIRC (no idea how true it is now) the AMD APUs actually get better graphics performance than Intel's iGPUs.
But worse CPU performance.
Might've changed in the last year or two since I looked though.

@bwDraco I run a 980TI for 4k. quix runs one for ultrawidescreen. Bob does 4k too
If I was doing up to 1440, a better midrange card would handle most of my needs

Might do some A/V transcoding, rarely, but most of my CPU will be for compiling and running VMs

6:04 AM
@GypsySpellweaver if your software supports it, quicksync is rediculously efficient at that

Bob
Yea, still holds true: new A10 gets smoked by a Kaby i3 in single-thread, with nearly-comparable multithread: cpubenchmark.net/…
That's for CPU perf.
I'm pretty sure the APU still wins in GPU perf (how much? idk)
OTOH I'd not game on an iGPU, APU or not -_-
And for desktop rendering there's really not much difference, they're both 'good enough'
Hm. "new" as in "current" thogh
There's supposed to be a newer one this year, that might be more competitive

If I do any gaming on the PC, it'll be along the lines of Call To Power. :) RPG is my speed.

@GypsySpellweaver I play Halo CE in school :P

I prefer to have an iGPU since my system before this has chewed through 2 graphics cards in its lifetime ;p
Its nice to be able to use the system should anything happen

Bob
6:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek At this point i have like 3 spare GPUs -_-

lol
I have none

@Rahul2001 Last game I played at school was "Lunar Lander"

I have a 450 that randomly loses video when it warms up

@satibel for a moment I thought that accent grave was a spec of dust on my monitor.

It is an accent grave though.

@satibel Actually it's an accent circumflex, not grave. Ê vs È, there isn't a grave for "h" that I know of.

@GypsySpellweaver yes, my bad

6:21 AM
Just cause I don't know about it, don't mean it don't exist though.

;p
I forgot most of my french classes.

Oops, there is a grave accented H,H̀ h̀, use unknown.

Bob
I've gotten real good at identifying blurry photos of storefronts over the last few weeks...

@Bob Is that because you are Not a robot?

Bob
6:34 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Robot? Where?!

Are you getting good at identifying blurry photos of storefronts because they're used in the anti-robot tests on web pages?

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Yes... that last message was a joke :P

I wanted to correct but my brain farted x)

@Bob as long as they don't test for being a human
those are a pain in the rear

Bob
6:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek s/rear/paw/ ? :P

@JourneymanGeek of course I'm real human, hey wanna go skateboards?

7:39 AM

user226528
@Burgi Hi.

user226528
You guys have no idea what just happened: I migrated someone's HDD to a new SSD. But Google Chrome lost all its extensions.

user226528
Normally, my people say: Don't you have a backup? Of course I do have a backup! I just restored the backup!

shouldn't chrome auto sync those?

user226528
The guy hadn't enabled online sync. Says he doesn't trust Google. (Well, who does?)

7:44 AM
today I noticed a weird behaviour in network engineering chat room. When I was posting my comment, instead of my comment being posted a box was appeared with a graph suggesting this chatroom is made for discussing professional networks..I left after it

o0
screenshot?

user226528
What did you ask there?

Hmm, I think it's that message that's shown to every new user in chat?

user226528
Probably. Did it happen after you pressed "Send" or before it?

Blah blah blah be nice blah blah blah?

7:48 AM
am I banned from posting in that chatroom? I asked that the network engineering site has most of the questions of how to set up switches, VLAN, routers as if it is a support site, no productive questions..they said they don't deal with questions above OSI layer 4 protocols and then I couldn't reply

I haven't come across that before

user226528
I can't seem to reproduce it either.

user226528
Although I probably do not have posting privilege, right?

Chat's shared
other than SO and MSE I think

maybe chatroom admin don't want me to reply further so might have blocked me from posting with that auto generated comment

user226528
7:51 AM
Unlikely

I'm not familiar with any way to do that.

@defalt The fact that you left the room yourself indicates otherwise

let me share the link what happened there

@JourneymanGeek Three servers, Meta.SE, SO and SE
Yes, it's shared

@M.A.R. yup

7:52 AM
If the parent account of the site you're suspended on matches your chat parent account, you'd be suspended on that server
. . . and subsequently go to browse meta.SE chats

user226528
@M.A.R. So, with which one NE is shared? (Or is this the wrong question?)

Might be gallery mode, but we've never used it here.

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, Mar 17 at 19:23, by M.A.R.
I'm probably the only person that came here first in 2015 (2016?) without having been suspended somewhere else

lol
I've not been suspended anywhere either

@FleetCommand NE is on the SE server
It's also possible there was a drama going on, so a mod or an RO put the room on timeout

7:55 AM
ffs

This would be consistent with all the evidence defalt vaguely provided

user226528
Quite so.

this side of the desk is rubbish

@Burgi Then move to that side of the desk

i have about 1cm^2 of space where my mouse actually works

user226528
7:57 AM
@Burgi Did you manage to fix your TV's reception?

not yet
i need to phone the landlord at lunch

I can't say I'm familiar with their chat, mods or site, so, not sure we can be of much help?

is there a hazing ritual that the new mod will have to go through?

now I can post there..in case which graph I was talking about you can see there chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/11177/…

8:00 AM

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?
... you posted a link to the room ...

user226528
I got nothing. @JourneymanGeek?

LOL yeah, oneboxes are confusing to many people
Posts a gigantic link to Amazon that takes up all the screen

user226528
Boy, I wish someone had answered this question: superuser.com/questions/622349/…

user226528
Anyway, I marked it as off-topic.

Someone did.

user226528
8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek I see no check mark

Well, the OP didn't mark one
but there's answers with a fair amount of upvotes which might work

I didn't post a link, I was replying and as soon as I pressed enter that auto generated image replaced what I was replying..so I thought that might be a way to prevent new users from discussing off topic titles..then I left from there

._.
@defalt dude....

@FleetCommand There are a LOT of posts without an accepted answer . . . And the checkmark doesn't matter much anyway
Between an upvote and the checkmark, I prefer to trust the upvote
Sure sure, the checkmark earns the checkmarkee more rep, and it makes the answer stick to the top, and that's inconsistent with how SE thinks of them, and it's requested to change, but upvotes are less erroneous usually

user226528
I once asked how to compile Visual Studio Code in SO, after a long time, all I received was a downvote. Not that I am pining for it; I got it working after all.

8:07 AM
Esp. upvotes on answers. There are crappy voters who only aim to game the electorate and vox populi badges
@FleetCommand yeah, that's not a really trustworthy vote either

there are times come when you realize that most upvoted answer is not the actual answer

But 5 upvotes is different from one passive downvote

user226528
Pretty much yes

@defalt Of course. Nothing is infallible, nothing is perfect
That's why god created commenting

user226528
@M.A.R. God created?

user226528
8:10 AM
LOL

user226528
Boy, once I was on a plane with an atheist; he said he liked an app that Microsoft created. I told him there is no Microsoft and there is no such thing as developers!

user226528
Then I told him to stop talking like creationists.

Microsoftists
They're all the same
Believing in this Gill Bates guy

Wrong set of gods if you ask me
MS is capricious and might turn into a swan and do things birdy style with your wife update your PC overnight

8:14 AM
Fun fact: There are eight Gill Bates's on SO.

user226528
Anyway, the guy showed me a couple of things as a proof of Microsoft's existence and then asked how I can deny its existence in the face of so much evidence. I told him creationist have told me the same thing about God.

And 15 Bill Gates, and 1 Bill Gate.

user226528
Also a Bill Gates' Evil Twin Brother

@FleetCommand IKR, imagine a country that you've never traveled to. How can I prove to you that it exists without you easily discarding the evidence as "They're lying"?

user226528
8:18 AM
@M.A.R. Oh, you can't prove anything to an stubborn a-h.

user226528
@M.A.R. But you can prove it to me with Google Earth.

Shrug

@FleetCommand google could be part of the conspiracy.

user226528
Anyway, do you think he would have been furious if he in the end discovered that I am actually religious?

This is the Trump era, and being skeptical of everything scientific but not skeptical of everything ridiculous era.

user226528
8:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek Huh! And here I expected you to come up with a canine comment!

i heard that in darkest peru the bears eat marmalade!

@FleetCommand I didn't. It might dog you.

user226528
@Burgi What? Only in the darkest Peru? ;)

@Burgi What about the brightest Peru?
They must be eating honey and pooping cotton candy

8:57 AM
@Burgi Not only that, but they steal and wear human clothes
Truly terrifying

Then they emigrate to Australia and hide in trees, dropping onto unsuspecting tourists ...

!!s/clothes/skin/

9:58 AM
@djsmiley2k they aren't from that bit of darkest peru

How could you tell?

they've got a suntan

I hear they are fond of pika...chew.

user226528
You are better at canine jokes. ;)

Technically, that's vulpine ;p

user226528
Canidae: domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals, coyotes, and other dog-like mammals

10:44 AM
@FleetCommand i made the same argument and they got grumpy about it

user226528
@Burgi And what did they do with Grumpy? Do I need to look for an alternative dwarf? ;)

user226528
Question: Who is knowledgeable about Star Wars here?

\o
also @allquixotic is pretty good
for example:
9
A: Ahsoka Tano's Lightsaber Fighting Style

allquixoticStar Wars' Lightsaber combat is depicted using many different Forms (e.g. Form II: Makashi is linked there). There are many different lightsaber guard poses used within the Star Wars canon and also within the expanded universe / Legends. Ahsoka Tano herself: Her primary form is an acrobatic ...

lol
@allquixotic probably outgeeks me in that respect
though partially cause I have a broader interest in space opera

user226528
So, I hear a new Star Wars film called Rough One is out. Why every time I call it film #8 everyone contradicts me?

10:50 AM
@FleetCommand rogue
@FleetCommand cause the numbering is mainly about the skywalker saga
in a sense, these are side stories not part of the main plotline

user226528
@JourneymanGeek What the hell? There is Death Star and Princess Lee in it. How is that not part of the main storyline?

also, its technically between episodes 3 and 4, and the numbering is by "internal" chronology not order of release.
If it was, its essentially episode 3.5 ;p
maybe 3.75
@FleetCommand Leia isn't a protagonist
she's essentially fan service

@JourneymanGeek 3.77896

3.9

I SEE YOUR 3.9. DO I SEE A 3.95! 3.95! SOLD TO THE ENTIRELY CONFUSED CHAP IN THE COLONIAL UNIFORM!

10:54 AM
it flows immediately into ANH

yup
In a very real sense, the main starwars story is about the fall, and rise of the jedi and the skywalker "clan"

user226528
I miss Robotech.

user226528
Season 1 only. Season 2 and 3 were nonsense.

(ok, so TFA is odd since it focuses more on Guitar Ben solo, and we don't know if he has elder siblings and what happened to the jedi)
