@Bob does debian do SELinux?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yes. It's available on the default Debian kernel.

ah ok
Another place where ubuntu does its own thing

Bob
You do have to install a couple packages and reboot though. So depends on how 'production' that server is :P
Yea, Ubuntu does some Apparmor thing. Canonical-land is weird.
As long as it's in permissive mode, it should still allow everything while logging where it would have denied.
Which by default might include that dir even without adding an explicit deny.

Canonical mostly likes reinventing the wheel, except when it makes sense.

I have nothing particular against a properly implemented SELinux MAC policy, but AppArmor turned out to be easier for them to implement as the LSM and policy framework behind secure LXD guest isolation
so I have particular experience with AppArmor being good

12:05 AM
@allquixotic I was thinking Unity, Mir....

also, AppArmor has been mainlined in Linux since 2010, and was started in 2003 by a company called Immunix; Canonical just happens to be the current maintainer (SUSE had a go at maintaining it for a while too)
also, not that I have anything against the NSA, but the original name for SELinux was NSALinux
that just feels creepy

@allquixotic actually, that's one case where the NSA did their peoper function

Bob
@allquixotic And apparently you have to not have AppArmor to use the LXD snap on Debian... stgraber.org/2017/01/18/lxd-on-debian

Damn david really crushed the field eh

Kinda expected ;p
Especially with only one seat. I'm surprised at the lower end of the field TBH

Interesting fact: the most common ballot was David, me, then music (612 instances)
2
And indeed, the result was expected, and well deserved!

@BenN not sure there was any other logical option

@JourneymanGeek I wasn't so sure
thats why I went and got rep so I could vote for david

Perhaps a more interesting fact: 55 people voted only for David

12:36 AM
guilty as charged

@BenN cause essentially transference of votes would have had no practical effect unless there was an actual tie, or close enough to it

@JourneymanGeek or if your preferred candidate didn't make it and two others had something close to a tie

@Magisch short of an epic meltdown or major drama, I don't think anyone expected @DavidPostill not to win
and mod-material does not do epic meltdowns, and we taichi drama.

still it's nice to finally know
I know david from charcoal and him becoming mod was overdue with how good he is at it

2 hours later…
2:39 AM
man. I am really considering the SSD for games again ;p

2:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek "You seem to have a thing for random capitalization" (seen in a comment) :P

So what should I do about a serial downvoter who is downvoting 2 of my answers daily? They are obviously not leaving a comment :$
normally I would shrug but, 3 days in a row, exactly 2 answers get downvoted

@Ramhound Normally that gets caught by the system, right?

Well; The user seems smart enough not to vote enough each day to be caught and have their votes reversed.
if it the votes were towards weaker answers, I might chop it up to, they need to be improved.

If someone has figured out how to get around the serial downvote system, then it's a big deal.

Is this something that needs to be bumped up to the Community Team?

3:11 AM
if somebody wants to downvote my answers to my self-answered questions they are welcome to do so. There is one particular user that around 2 days ago accused me of downvoting their questions. If it's them they will run out of reputation soon enough.

@DavidPostill Congrats!

@Ramhound Is that the guy with the bowl cut?

What?

Hi avatar has a bowl cut

Didn't pay enough attention, lol

3:13 AM
ha, never mind then.

@Ramhound keep a record of that user's rep, and see if it correlates with the future downvotes. If it looks to be supported, contact the CT and let them deal with it.

@DavidPostill You'd better not change one bit now :P

@Rahul2001 He won't, hard enough to teach an old dog new tricks (mod tools). Changing his behavior ain't gonna happen. :D

@Rahul2001 Typical mods... always sleeping.

Already know their answer...

3:16 AM
@MichaelFrank :P

3:27 AM
@MichaelFrank the serial downvote system isn't infallible

@JourneymanGeek Oh yea, I'm sure it's not.

@Ramhound I'm not seeing anything particularly odd from a quick look at rough voting trends.
My suggestion is to use the contact us link (and say I suggested it) and try to say as clearly as possible when this started, and the pattern.
The CMs have a few tools we don't have, not counting being able to see all the things, that might be handy here

@Bob Liked 'em both.

3:52 AM
@allquixotic I haven't been watching his videos for a while, but I really used to like them

His video of the data recovery from platter was pretty sweet.

Update: well i got the computer shrinked using an "inwin" mid tower,interestingly smaller. Brand i never heard of but it was sold local. Pics to follow if i can

inwin's kinda semi boutique
makes nice stuff but not very famous

4:08 AM
So annoying; So I waited a couple days to order the Drobo 5N2, and it seems to have gone from a product that wasn't a pre-order to a pre-order; I then miss type Road as Rod....Ugh!

4:21 AM
Every time I walk by my laoptop that has this images of stacked rocks, I think to myself that, it's not rocks that are stacked
A medium size pile of grayish rocks....

4:44 AM
@Ramhound huh?

Stuff is shoehorned (-: but really the case was wide , fits tower heatsync, has almost an inch in the backdoor to fit the mess of messy cabling that has nowhere to go in small case
One problem ,my fancifull idea that i could save power hasnt really showed up in the wattage numbers yet. More power.
When it comes to building a tower computer , and cooling and wire management , saying "It is Easy , you should do it" then the newbie gets a scrawney case and the heck that aint easy. Took me 2-3 times longer to build into the small spaves , and forget cable management , just be happy it doesnt make knots.
2 drives put in the lower 3.5 tray, there was no airspace between them. Because i got the 7200rpm style , i did not like that. So 2 there and 2 in adapted 5.25 bays , which always leaves air space.

5:12 AM
@Psycogeek Wouldn't you save space, and heat, with SSD?

Stacking all 4 drives in the place for them, would work ok, but unnessisarily cramped. The top of that lower hard drive rack had a spot for Ssd. Yea
@GypsySpellweaver yes buy me 28 Terra of ssds (-:

@Psycogeek Right after I win the Lotto :|

is only really ~14 formatted. But then backups is that again
I put the backups In the case. If my plan works , they will be disabled and fall to sleep. Love it when a plan comes together . . .
On those rare instances.

If I win the Lotto, I got some ideas of my own for a computer :)

Then the limitation will not be the money . . . But the people , and the expected standard. And just when you make it all specialty , they really will be truthfull when they say "nobody else has that problem " ( insert "your on your own" music)

5:30 AM
I've always wanted to build a desk with the computer integrated. Roll-top style with the USB ports on the side of an upright, the DVD tray sliding out like one of the desktop drawers, etc. Not just a compartment on the side to hold a tower, but totally a part of the desk.

ooh
@GypsySpellweaver I've seen a few builds like that, usually are cool
@M.A.R. Heisenberg? ;p

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver That's easier than you'd think :P Could totally do it now if you had a router (tool) handy.

@JourneymanGeek Congratulations, you're like the 1472400th user to notice

Bob
Well, it's easier if you stick with a normal case and extend a couple wires for the ports/buttons

@M.A.R. do I get a prize?

5:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek No, not round enough
If it were 100001, things would've been different
You would've won a Breaking Bad swag

My life has no meaning. Whines

@JourneymanGeek Glad to see you're still here. Not sure who user overmind is, but rejected an edit as "superfluous". And it is, cause there wasn't anything to do to it, except HTTPS. But can he let them through anyway?

hm
should take two to. Link?

Q: I'm periodically getting a Windows Security login dialogue - How can I tell what's causing it to appear?

therefromhereI've just switched on a PC for the first time in several months, and I'm periodically getting the following Windows Security dialogue box prompting me for a Username / password: Now, the server name in question relates to my previous job, and I did have email, VPN etc for that job set up on th...

Not sure how to link to the queue entry.

@GypsySpellweaver until I get a job again, I'm mostly at the disposal of the community when I'm not doing other things ;p
Done
We see a edit (1) under the edit and can accept from there

5:36 AM
k
All the edits I'm doing have, at least, "Fixed HTTPS image links, see https://..." prefixed with anything special done to it as well. Hoping that otherwise pointless edits are noticed for what they are.

@GypsySpellweaver that's generally the idea
I think we'll see if we can get the "official" cleanup thing kickstarted again in a day or two

Now that I'm into the 2011 range I'm finding many more with good formating and clean text, and nothing to do but drop in an "s", and I can't do that. have to do "something" to make the edit go through. Started adding tooltips to the images. :D
@JourneymanGeek Thought that was a trial-by-fire for the new mod?

@GypsySpellweaver hence a few days ;p
(I get into the habit of using the royal We when talking about official moddy things ;p)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek We*
:P

@Bob clearly I am very informal in an unofficial capacity ;p

5:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek But we like using 'we'

Oh I use We because the dog(s) is also here, people say , who is "we" when staring at all 3 of "us". I should have known I wouldnt count (-: aka they treat dogs bettern people much times.

@Psycogeek There just amazed that they can understand one of you.

(also, being unemployed is a pain in the ass.)
and Singapore's market for non dev IT folks is terrible

@JourneymanGeek Agreed. My "job" is tend to the wife and play on the computer. Hope to do something freelance eventually though.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the easy answer is to become a dev ;)

5:53 AM
@Bob "easy"

Or work in sales

@M.A.R. heh, or if SE had a CM role open up ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well, they have the PM role open, AFAIK

@M.A.R. its filled

For some reason they can't keep PMs

Bob
5:55 AM
Neither can we (Australia)

@M.A.R. I'm in an odd place of getting the theoratical aspects of managing software and systems management
and not being able to find a role anywhere related to that
or in desktop support.

I think you be surprised, at how much you know and can contribute and get paid, when you see the "normal" people. Who sound all computer savy , because they know facebook , and store on the cloud (-: expert

@Psycogeek most of the people who I seem to talk to are worse than that.

Lots of people out there push the button they tell em to push. Reading your answers and such indicates you know Why.
Guy told me last week i could/should be management , because i am calm under pressure. I guess most people would Vent before they Explode (-: me i also like to blow shit up (-:

6:12 AM
@Psycogeek Do enough of that and you can make the stock in Clorox® go up :)

Nooo i mean mythbusters style (-:

@Psycogeek At least you got it
@Psycogeek An what you gonna do wit dat?

The batteries. $$$ one only gets me 2 hr of gaming ¤-: blaa

600 watts/hr isn't too bad for a serious gaming rig.

Shoulda listened when they said laptop. 450-500W lots of inefficency, i should do something about

6:22 AM
Put a windmill on top of the monitor. While you're yelling at the competition, you can power the PC.

Lol swear power.
Need the whole roof covered in solar. Then on sunny days , blow it all on air conditioning, and on cold cloudy days , sit inside out of the rain with Nothing )-:
It is prolly the dogs plan , not mine. Wish you were gaming , and walk the dogs again till the batteries charge up. Prolly got the idea from a cat
Even video watching can be done 3 " other" ways for about 25-30 watts , OC desktop ,more like 100-150w
Paying for a RV parking pad with power (and water) 30-50$ a day so far. Many now charge seperate for power use too.
Oh sure freedom , mobile , fun . Then where is the dishwasher , and the laundry, not to mention all i have done so far is fix it. Glue comming undone , screws falling out , tires $160 Gas 7mpg. Thats 50cent for a mile. Freedom isnt free lessen you can pay the fee
One RV spot i was at is on a 3 miles of fairgrounds, RVs parked 4-6 feet from ya neighbor. Stuffed into about 4 blocks spaces there.

6:48 AM
I guess the freedom to roam means "don't park here"?

It has a 4000w generator , this year special (just for me) the regional parks instituted a no generators policy. I hate the loud noxious gen , but now i cant even use it. Good thing solar was the plan from the beginning.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver It's... pretty bad.

Lots of space inside though , half of it used to hold the tools to fix it (-: really they are just expencive portapotties you can cook in , next to the toilet 3 feet away. Ahh and it is still fun. All i needed is an ivory throne and top ramen

Bob
You're looking at <400W for an iy-7700k + GTX 1080.
That's pretty much top of the line for consumer gaming.
Sure, you could go into dual-GPU etc etc....

I ended up with 1070 after all that research. But the basterds sent the cd without the driver or utilities. Argggg . Need to get it downloaded mobile now. Any Specific nvidea driver that is stable this week ?
The "driver" cd is just a damn downloader with downloadable belotion

7:02 AM
@Psycogeek No clue what the $$$ is but have you looked at a couple small "rooftop" turbines? One at each end of the RV, removed for travel.

@GypsySpellweaver there is about 2 people total with wind power on mobile rv. Very impressive numbers from wind power. But a lot to haul and setup

What nvidia stuff you need, besides the WHQL driver?

user226528
WHQL driver is probably more than enough

user226528
It comes with Control Panel and everything

The latest is 368.39, you might have that saved from other card drivers, it covers several cards

7:09 AM
Gigbytes OC utility , to lower voltage some , general full control of the hardware?

@Psycogeek what OS are you running?

Win 7 still, me hopes now you dont say too fn bad, to use new stuff you gotta have 10. Many of the games i got wont work with 10

@Psycogeek 64-bit or 32-bit?

Important things i forgot to ask
64Bit

wow, they just released a new driver, 378.92 for Win7-64 on 3.20.17

7:18 AM
I prefer a stable one if it is known which is. They can pay somone else to beta thier new fails , , i mean features (-:

@Psycogeek How "stable"? 2 weeks, 2 years?

Stable Bob and allquitox use it stable enough for them type?
With AMD i would get a user concensus. People who didnt revert it for how bad ?
Amd drivers were pure hell sometimes, nvidea eventulaaly joined them , i mean amd got better (-:

@Psycogeek You ain't giving my any confidence in AMD video abilities
@Psycogeek Which card do you have?

I've never had any issues with the gameready drivers

I have 1070 gigabytes 3 fan model. AMD was very problematic when it also included TV tuners "All in Wonder " too many things to get straight.
Those days are gone

7:55 AM

Q: Higher performance on Remote Desktop than local console?

MichaelDI often use my notebook via RDP over a fast local network. I also use my notebook locally (so not over RDP). When over RDP, I notice that there is never a delay when switching windows and such. When using it over the console, switching windows regularly lag a bit (not much but enough to notice it...

user226528
This is a real head-scratcher.

user226528
How can this possibly happen?

8:09 AM
Shitty graphics processor on the local console
Changing the RDP session rendering parameters is also unlikely to be relevant here

@OliverSalzburg whats it like being a normal?

This shitty dialog instantly comes to mind
@Burgi No idea. I'm still as awesome as ever

user226528
@OliverSalzburg You call a K2200 "shitty"?

@FleetCommand Those are the specs on the PC. To my understanding the RDP client. The performance problem is on the RDP host, the notebook
Unless I'm misunderstanding
And, to be honest, I don't even have a clue what a K2200 is ;D

user226528
@OliverSalzburg WHAT? I though "PC" was typo because he meant "Laptop". Why on earth must someone give the specs for the system that does not have the problem?

8:14 AM
@OliverSalzburg sounds like a robot sent back in time to murder your grandmother

user226528
And why the hell everyone is installing Kali Linux these days? (Or to be more accurate, stuck at installing Kali Linux?)

@FleetCommand I dunno :D Maybe you're right
@FleetCommand Well, how are you going to be a hacker without Kali?

user226528
@OliverSalzburg With Linux Mint?

Good call

8:42 AM
Can someone tell me which of the two .msi on this page you need? microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48257
Both even maybe?

@FleetCommand hacker wannabes.

@JourneymanGeek I find it funny how so many newbies are under the impression that you cannot hack from Windows.
Plus, Kali is pretty crappy except for certain uses

@Rahul2001 Its not the tool, but knowing how to use the tool.
the problem I have is so many people try to use kali without understanding the most basic fundamentals of linux

@JourneymanGeek What about people who try to configure Windows without understanding the basic fundamentals of right-click?

@GypsySpellweaver I'd get the popcorn.

8:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek TBH I dislike Linux. It is unnecessarily complicated. And I suppose I do have to learn it now, but I've been putting it off because honestly, Windows is so much simpler, and it just works for me.

@Rahul2001 its a tool. ;p

o_O

@Rahul2001 Except when it don't work.

soooooooo
one of our clients, recieves an email from south africa
it lists their home address...

@GypsySpellweaver Almost always does for me.

9:03 AM
@Rahul2001 I'm mostly on windows.
I do run linux (with a DE) on a secondary box and linux as a server.

@Rahul2001 Like as not, it's more often than not, with a higher often than is frequent in GNU/Linux. The difference comes when the not happens. Usually in GNU/Linux there's a way to correct it, without having to wait for someone (Redmond) to patch the whole system. Still, as @JourneymanGeek said, it's a tool. Some tools are better at some jobs, without being the only tool for the job.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Should be 1511 if you're on an up-to-date copy of Win10
IIRC there's no changes for 1607

Also, I have a linux VM running for about 216 days ;p

Bob
I don't even keep my Windows system up for that long anymore :(

user226528
55 mins ago, by Fleet Command
@OliverSalzburg WHAT? I though "PC" was typo because he meant "Laptop". Why on earth must someone give the specs for the system that does not have the problem?

Bob
9:10 AM
Think my record was some 4 months before I decided to reboot.

user226528
I was right.

Bob
'course, these days I'm more willing to reboot seeing as there's less chance of it not starting up again... haven't done any weird things to this bootloader yet

@JourneymanGeek Came across an interesting one. Only good answer is a total rip from another site, which is referenced at the top. I'd think that it should've been dumped, but it is the right answer, and other answers have used it as well. I can do the image fix, but should I?

A: Downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional without reinstall?

JaysenYou can downgrade Windows 7 ultimate to pro, check this link: UnaWave - Installation - Downgrade A Windows 7 Ultimate Installation can normally not change into a minor version of "Windows 7 Home Premium" or "Professional". If you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. bet...

@DavidPostill What do you think? ;p

Didn;t see him here. Good call!

9:14 AM
@Rahul2001 windows has come a long way in recent versions
lets just leave it at that
be glad you've not had to deal with them.
If you end up working in the enterprise, be wary that not everything is as simple as win 2012 server makes it these days

@djsmiley2k GNU/Linux has come a long way recently too. So have personal computers in general.

@JourneymanGeek @GypsySpellweaver Hmm. It's not quite plagiarism as there is a source link but it does need block quoting. I would fix it up. I normally do that for a first offender and remind them about the quoting. In this case, it is an unregistered user and he never came back.
On the other hand paw we don't know if the answer works ...

@DavidPostill Later answers, using it, reported it works

@GypsySpellweaver Ok. Then definitely fix it up (with block quotes and images). If the images go away the answer would be useless.

@DavidPostill This is gonna be fun :D
One other benefit, it'll get the diamond off of it. Can't have blatant copy tied to a mod ;P

9:33 AM
@Bob Gotcha thanks
I read up on Wikipedia why 1511 seemed so special to me :P

user226528
@OliverSalzburg Thank God, you no longer write Wikipedia with a capital P. It scared me.

@FleetCommand The capitalization of my P's in "Wikipedia" is not intentional, if that puts you at rest ;D

Bob
@DavidPostill That reminds me. We should make it a rule for room owners and chat mods to have an animal avatar :P (cc @OliverSalzburg)

9:50 AM
@Bob Davids' is, have you looked at it? ;P

user226528
@DavidPostill So, are you a mod now? Or is the inauguration some times later?

@FleetCommand are you going to fix those images or not bother?

@Burgi If you refer to the Windows 7 Downgrade? I'm on it.

ah cool :)

user226528
@Burgi You mean the images of "Downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional without reinstall?" They won't show inline (HTTPS problem. And uploading them to Imgur would be copyright violation.

user226528
9:59 AM
@GypsySpellweaver That'd be copyright violation...

Oh!
Would it be it I recreate them?

no it wouldn't, as long as you state the original source

user226528
It is a five-years-old answer. Why bother?
