12:00 AM
Most stock coolers that come with processors have pre-applied paste.

Bob
I wonder if I should install the fan+CPU before or after putting the mobo inside the case. *shrug* doesn't really matter

@Bob I tend to bench assemble, then install in case

lol

but the human has pretty big paws

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, pretty big case, and I've fiddled plenty with my current one without ever removing the mobo :P
hm... still have half a tube of AS5 in a drawer somewhere, I think

12:01 AM
I read that as ass ;p

Bob
12:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek it might be similar, after sitting there for five years

12:25 AM
blah.
How important is realtime scanning for a AV really
mucking around with my XP VM
tried avast and it goes nuts, taking uo 100% of processor usage even when its disabled

I'd like my AV to be able to stop bad things immediately before they run, but that seems a little extreme
Though if there's no CPU time left over for the malware to run on, then mission accomplished?
Hehe

lol
I have clamwin installed
LUA won't work here since most of the things I'd do likely need admin rights anyway

I thought I remembered there being a version of Microsoft Security Essentials that worked on XP, but I can't currently find an MS download

Yeah, I was running that for quite a bit
Also its worth considering I'm literally just going to turn this VM on to answer SU questions ;p

Something happened :(
> If you can read this, you are using the wrong driver for your printer.
:P
But it prints perfectly fine!

12:44 AM
I was debating a fresh install (I have boxen that have legible keys) but that seems irresponsible ;p

Dog
1:23 AM
@Bob You boughts stuff?

Bob
@Dog Yup. Two months ahead of schedule, but meh.

Dog
Kaby Lakes?
:-D

Bob
AX860i for 300 AUD (20% off), Asus Maximus IX Code for 500 AUD (20% off)
Corsair 750D for 200 AUD (normal price, meh)

Dog
AX860i :-o
That's Overkill³

Bob
Also ordered an i7-7700k for 505 AUD (...cheaper than i7-6700k, despite normal price) and Noctua NH-U14S for 95 AUD but haven't received confirmation for those yet. Should come through today.
@Dog ...well, I did say I was going for overkill :P

Dog
1:28 AM
@Bob Yes, but this isn't overkill, it's overkill x overkill x overkill
I guess your power supply has 10 watts more than mine now :-|

Bob
lol
The biggest problem is RAM. Ordered these but ... backorder. Bleh.

Dog
I've never even used half the capacity of my PSU, and that's even with my graphics card overclocked to the point it uses 50w more than yours

Bob
DDR4 is out of stock pretty much everywhere :\
(yes, I think I did say that last night)

Dog
:O
I had no problem getting hold of it here...

Bob
@Dog Going for the silent operation, remember? :P
Though the HX850i actually had a higher threshold for passive cooling
@Dog Ship some over? :P
MSY doesn't even stock 32 GB kits, and the individual 16 GB sticks are pricey.

Dog
1:34 AM
@Bob in all my years of PC silencing, I don't think the power supply fan has ever been a major concern since like, 80mm fans in 2004

Bob
Arc is out of stock in the local store, expensive elsewhere for the two models in stock, and the rest are all on backorder.
@Dog Probably true for me too. TBH it's probably mostly the CPU fan and the HDDs that are annoying me at the moment... gotta figure out how to get the HDDs to power off on idle.

Dog
I guess a lot of DDR4 chips are going to the OEMs just released tons of new Kaby Lake systems

Bob
But, eh. See: overkill :P
almost went for 64 GB but that would've busted my budget
and eh, 32 is enough. can always add more next year

Dog
@Bob lol. I only temporarily have one HDD in my system cause I was too lazy to use it as an external while travelling. Otherwise I'd have zero.
CPU: see watercooling/low profile Be Quiet! Silent cooler

Bob
@Dog Considered it, but this convinced me otherwise :P
My GPU blows out the back anyway, so it shouldn't affect CPU air cooling too much.

Dog
1:38 AM
Meh, I'd like Noctua's but they're just too overpriced imo

Bob
@Dog Ya, was pricey.
Could've gone for the 212 for like 30-40 :\

Dog
(Also Noctua's two low profile options 1) sucked balls and 2) was too big)

Bob
If Intel still included a cooler I'd probably have just stuck that on for now :P
@Dog Oh yea, tower doesn't really work for low profile does it?
Benefits of a full-ATX case :P

Dog
Noctua has some dual-fan low profile one that looks awkward and is about 10mm too big for my case
I'm quite OK with Intel stock coolers most of the time tbh
My server runs one

Bob
I almost went with a be quiet! air cooler

Dog
1:40 AM
My desktop did too, until I had to shove an overclocked CPU in a mITX chassis

@Dog no stock coolers in the unlocked processors tho

Dog
My server runs a Xeon.
Mind you it's also got 10 other fans in it, so CPU fan noise wasn't really on my list of concerns.

Bob
Noctua stock was easier to find than bq! :P

Bob
@Dog actually I kinda wanted a heatsink that was easier to clean too :P

1:42 AM
Noctua's not really obscure :p

Bob
the stock ones are annoying to get the dust out of

Dog
@Bob Clean?
What's clean?
/me hasn't cleaned a CPU cooler since 2008
Incidentally that was also the time I shoved filters on all my air intakes
Even with as many as 3 cats in the house...

Bob
@Dog Yea, uh... my current case is only partially filtered, and I got the "high airflow" 750D
There's also the little matter of room temps going over 35 deg C :\
My CPU currently sits at a core temp of something like 60-70 when mostly idle. That's not nice...
@JourneymanGeek And that one annoys me, too. God forbid anyone use unlocked processors without a pricey cooler.

Dog
@Bob Eek'
My flatmate used an unlocked ,overclocked 4670k with a stock cooler for years
Technically my Hetzner server is an unlocked processor and overclocked and probably running on a stock cooler

Bob
@Dog yea, there's a reason I'm going all out on the cooling and airflow (ignoring watercooling, granted)
I mean, technically 60 isn't too bad relative to room temps, but it's not a great absolute temp and under load it runs into TCC a bit too quick
then again it being a 32nm CPU doesn't help :P
compared to more modern ones
wasn't Haswell the big jump in arch efficiency too?

1:54 AM
> Meooow! Meooow! Meow-meow-meow-meow-meow, meow-meow-meow-meow-meow!

Dog
@Bob Not huge, but bigger than anything that's come after it
My laptop idles at 55'c or so, but that's cause it's terrible, and a laptop
My desktop idle is at like... 38'c right now, at 29'c room temp
Never goes above 85'c at full load with the current configuration, albeit it could be lower.
After all it's moderately overclocked and on a low-profile silent cooler and I've got a custom fan profile that doesn't go above 60% fan speed until it hits 90'c

Bob
@Dog nice
the watercooled one, yea?
oh wait no

Dog
No, the watercooled one is in storage

Bob
ah

Dog
That just idled at the water temperature, which I'd set to be about 30'c.

Bob
2:06 AM
ah

Dog
Again, could have been lower, but I had my fan controller basically switch off the fans below 30'c

Bob
I wonder if anyone's tried using an aircon loop as a cooler. or a fridge, same thing

Dog
Depending on room temperature mind you. It actually based fan speeds off the weighted difference between intake temperature and water temperature
@Bob Lol
There've been hobbyists using fridge compressors in hackjob PC cooling rigs for decades
OK at least one decade

Bob
just gotta be careful with the refridgerant :P

> I cannot think of a way to improve this product
o_O

Dog
2:18 AM
The heck is a "MM"?

memory manager ? Multi Media ? Motorolla Modem ? MagnatroMeter?

Dog
Except the MM is nowhere near the system memory or GPU memory...

oh as if it was to scale :-) they all connect with one fat wire/trace too

2:25 AM
melts on your cpu but not on your cooler

Well, I'm struggling with Windows 7... wait, does this belong in another room?

Dog
@YeniaulAdrianad Yes
"Archaic operating systems nobody in their right mind uses anymore"... wait, that's Windows XP never mind

@YeniaulAdrianad I'd advise you to write a question on the main site, Super User, so far more people than here can see it

I have, but I'm kinda in a hurry
y'know, 3 AM and all

@YeniaulAdrianad thing is though, everyone is in a hurry

2:28 AM
Very true.

go to bed , you will fix it in 2 minutes once you wake up and your brain is working :-)

@Bob split aircon loops blow cold air and would likely work awesome.
@YeniaulAdrianad also, a question on the main site helps others, and I find asking a question helps frame a problem better

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the loops don't blow anything. they just have (compressed) refridgerant running through em

@Psycogeek Probably, except I have to go to high school tomorrow and I always come back from that in a worse state than I am now, so
Awww... it chopped off the ellipses.
So... does anyone care if I sum up the problem anyway?

computer chat, make it good you got one chance

2:32 AM
@Bob oh, you mean plumbing it directly to the coils? 0_0

how long might it take to boot a win pe on usb 2?

@YeniaulAdrianad Only if you promise to ask a question on the main site as soon as we solve your problem, and ping whoever who did as soon as you do XD
@barlop if you need to ask, its taking too long ;p

@JourneymanGeek I put it on Stack Exchange by mistake... but I can link you to the question
:P

but you could have spent the time you spent asking if you asked..
@YeniaulAdrianad that's fine

Q: DirectX 9 refuses to install

Yeniaul AdrianadI'm trying to install DirectX 9 on a Win7 x64 VM (due to a long story I won't get into) but the installer goes from the EULA directly to the Installation Complete portion, but does not say it found a newer version of DirectX or that the installation failed. Is there any way to either force it to ...

2:34 AM
link it here. If its on topic, just flag it for migration...

I'll wait for you all to finish gasping...

@YeniaulAdrianad I flagged it for migration
chances are the SO mods will recognise the nick and move it
hmm

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya

@Bob terrible idea IMO

Bob
lol

2:35 AM
you would get sufficiently cool air the 'normal' way

Bob
hmm, maybe I should've gotten a MSI motherboard...

too late? ;p
@YeniaulAdrianad quick internet search suggests there's logs answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/…

No log generated
-.- I really need to check things before I post, huh?

does it turn up as installed in add/remove programs?

2:37 AM
even in the bit for windows components?
(I don't have a 7 box in front of me, so I may be imprecise)

No, nothing.

er
is this dx 9.0 c?

@Dog Eh, OVH rents out dedicated servers with overclocked i7-6700K processors (4.4-4.7 GHz). ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/…

2:40 AM
hm
wait
waaaaait

I went there the first time. ..are the DLLs in the CABs packed with the offline installer?

windows 7 isn't on the supported list
ah
you want to pull the DLLs eh

Bob
@JourneymanGeek technically not

If it won't install, ight as well.
might*

egh. I'm thinking for some reason dx9 is built into windows 7

Bob
2:41 AM
@YeniaulAdrianad so, uh. mind going into the long story? :P

but I don't have any remaining systems with it to check

That'd be 11. I need 9 specifically

At this point, yeah.
Why 9?

On the topic of phase-change cooling... this idea just came up. The latest high-efficiency refrigerators have what's called inverter compressors. The compressor motor is a synchronous three-phase unit, and is driven by an inverter with variable frequency and voltage output, enabling efficient, variable-speed operation.

@YeniaulAdrianad gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/265014/… says they are backwards compatable.

2:42 AM
What if the same was used for CPU cooling?

ah hah!

Bob
@bwDraco there's little advantage over water cooling...

I need Serious Sam Second Encounter... I'm trying to document a mod that can completely take over modern systems with a game from '06

Bob
it's like halfway between watercooling and liquid nitrogen
I only suggested it for fun

2:43 AM
@Bob or air cooling

Bob
@YeniaulAdrianad so using an XP VM is out of the question?

...really? There's a clippy-like... thing?
3

I play a lot of crusty old Game on win7, and only ever had to run a single redistributable thing at any time. cant be sure about dx9 only. but this could be another situation where you need to indicate the Background, of why your installing it?

And yes, as I have no XP keys, and my DX11 install is missing a good majority of the DX9 bits.

@YeniaulAdrianad the second link I did for the 2010 dx redistributables includes dx9, and works for windows 7
If you know exactly which ones you need, 7zip will unzip the exe and the cabs

2:45 AM
because it might be built in, could be you just need to repair the original stuff, then run the DX updater again. >SFC /Scannow type of thing?

@JourneymanGeek I have no idea. @Psycogeek SFC returns normal... and SFC itself is corrupted

@YeniaulAdrianad so try the second link I posted
tell me what happened ;p

I think my ISO got completely s*** on during download. @JourneymanGeek downloading now...

@YeniaulAdrianad a possible way to fix the sfc not working, is to do a lapped install, or what they call a repair install. then test the sfc, then upgrade all over again.

Dog
!! Caaaaaaaat2

@Psycogeek Tried that. Like I said, I think my ISO is bad.

well there is always your last recent working backup

I just installed it!

it wasnt working very well then was it :-)

lol
@YeniaulAdrianad he has half a point
Its a VM. Snapshot often ;p

2:52 AM
He did indeed have half a point.
The 2010 SDK is working... i think

The one I linked should be the redistributable?

Oh... for a moment there I was confused... it did indeed extract the installer too. I'm such an end-user xD

OH
wait, you didn't run the extracted installer?

Then again, it was one file in 155

such fun

2:55 AM
I'm running the extracted one now

tbh, this is the sort of case where chat actually works a little better
but clearly THIS IS NOT A QUICK ANSWER.

It's an answer that I didn't have to wait up to a week for
because we all know after about a week no one will EVER see that question again on the browse pages, am I right?

lol
I routinely trawl the main pages for questions
I want my 100k XD

@YeniaulAdrianad yup unless 12 windows DX9 games come out on a special steam giveaway sale, and you win the High View Question award, before the lottery.

Well, it's installed... now to get the game to work.

2:59 AM
yay.
