i totally and completely apologise
i unbecame myself in the heat of the moment
i forgot our glorious leader was a small dog
as a side note, why are you still wearing a hat after the 8th....? ;)

Bob
Remember Reflections on Trusting Trust? There's a (horror?) short story, Coding Machines, based on it. It's a good read.

as is @OliverSalzburg... are mods exempt from the hat restrictions?

Any idea with Powershell that I can restore, unminimize, and maximize all windows with one command that I run through CMD? Similar to this command that minimizes them all.

flagged you both for wearing a hat outside of the prescribed hat wearing period

And Close too.

Bob
12:17 AM
@MathCubes Probably call into .NET. Might have to loop through all windows and send them window messages. Or trigger the keyboard shortcuts.

If you have a working thing for batch, it'll probably run just fine in PS too

powershell -command "& { $x = New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application; $x.minimizeall() }")

Oh, that is a PowerShell command

That command minimize them all but I can't figure out how to modify it.

Bob
or COM, I suppose...
*shudder*

12:18 AM
So $x = New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application; $x.minimizeall() is all you need if you're already in PS

Still doing Batch but I got it figure out mostly.

Bob
there's no straightforward way to maximise all

Thanks
That will help alot

Bob
lol. I've been through this (or something similar) before

@BenN ^ PowerShell abuse :D

12:23 AM
BTW, I am this for a script kitte that thinks that Making 20+ buttons than duplicating than including the code is easier since he likes GUIs and well Functions are too hard and so are dropdown boxes

Bob
and that was just to list them

You don't need a GUI for this

Bob
you could send a WM_SIZE to all of them in a loop
@MathCubes ?

Yea but I don't turly care. Other than I didn't realize how powerful Power shell was.

Bob
eh
PS is basically .NET with helper/cli functions and a dodgy syntax

12:25 AM
Yea seems nice.

PS is way way better than batch, but for some things (kind of like the window management you're getting at here) a compiled C++ app is cleaner

Yea I thought that bash(Linux) was superior to Batch. Power shell doesn't really compare to bash.

Bob
@BenN Cleaner, but annoying unless you intend to reuse it a lot :P

Really. I should really learn it. Although I don't have a need since I mainly use Linux.

You can run PowerShell on Linux, though it's not nearly as polished there (yet) as it is on Windows

12:30 AM
How is MacOS for developing? I haven't touch it yet even though I have been interested into computers since at least 10 years ago. My first Linux Distro that I install was Ubuntu 10.04 I believe.
Yea I know.

Give me a call.... 911-3456... soon

@Walmart Are you alright?
Oh, I see, a number starting with 911 always goes to the 911 Emergency

@Burgi mod abuse privilege. Also was a complete pain keeping the hat on ;p
also, the hell toupee's clearly a ginger cat.

Q: clockgen- changed ram speed in bios -no post,dg41cn,e2180 intel

megan russelmy desktop is dg41cn,1gb ram,e2180,tried to raise ghz,the system restarted..then i went to see bios-there i changed the ram speed (actually underclocked in bios to lesser speed)-it was altered already the numbers 5334 something like tat,now the system without entering the bios -continuous restart...

trying to work out if there's an actual question there, but the txtspk makes my poor head all furry....

The person tried to overclock their CPU (model provided?) but now the system just resets over and over
Oh, and they changed the RAM speed too?

and they're running what looks like a c2d

Bob
1:47 AM
I overclocked my hard drive and it stopped working
2

Dog
I overclocked Bob.

Dog
Bob is a Fox, not a Cat

You're a cat, dog

Bob
2:08 AM
Another day, still no word from the mobo&PSU purchase :\
Apparently those guys are known to either ship in a day, or take weeks-months.
so the two parts I literally can't do anything without will be the last to arrive. nice.
test CPU&RAM? nope, need the mobo

Bob
move existing hardware to new case? nope, need PSU
well, I suppose I could move the existing PSU too
bleh.
not worth the trouble.
hm. debating just going with 64 GB of RAM straight away
but then I'd only use maybe a quarter routinely
@JourneymanGeek A catdog?

maybe
heh, my next big planned purchase is a drone ;p
once I get a job of course

Bob
@JourneymanGeek of what kind?
the $10 ones?

@Bob leaning towards a DJI mavic

Bob
2:14 AM
a VR one?
@JourneymanGeek whatsthat

@Bob its a 'proper' drone

Bob
oh camera one

essentially, its a lighter, foldable version of the phantom
Apparently they're fairly easy to fly
and I actually have a few places where doing it is a possibility

@Bob I'm probably just going to recommend 2x16 GB and add more if needed.

at this point its in the "oooh!" and checking it every so often stage of the 3 month rule
and obviously, its like 1500 sgd so buying it without a steady job would be dumb

Dog
2:18 AM
@Bob No
Even 32GB is uneccessary but 16GB gets a little tight sometimes

Dog
> After about 20 minutes of relentless tree tugging with the cat still firmly grasping on, SSgt Cheah and Cpl Faidzul came up with another idea. They asked a resident on the sixth floor to spray water out of his bedroom window at the cat. The effect of water on the cat was immediate

Bob
@bwDraco 4x16 is a fair bit cheaper than 2x 2x16 :P
@Dog eh, I'm on 24 right now and I hit 16 pretty often
64 would be more for the novelty value :P
definitely getting 16 GB sticks though
not 4x8

Dog
@Bob I do too, yet 16GB in my main PC is only ever not enough about twice a month.

Bob
with 64 I'd basically ditch my current caching SSD

2:25 AM
@Bob My laptop has 24 GB of memory; peak memory utilization in day-to-day use hovers around 8-10 GB.
I have a few applications that genuinely require 16-20 GB of memory, though I don't use them often.

Bob
heh, I think the last time I hit 24 was when I left that Steam monster game running overnight
it had a horribad memory leak

The most demanding game I play on this machine, DOOM, needs about 5 GB as currently configured. (System requirements call for 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended.)

i got 32, but could survive easily on 16. Then i did the cache thing for the SSD which was interesting for saving writes, but uneventfull much beyond that.

I have RAPID Mode enabled. Doesn't really bring a big boost in most situations, but DOOM is so I/O-heavy (thanks in no small part to the game's huge textures) that RAPID Mode makes a significant difference in load times.
It does have the useful effect of coalescing multiple writes to the same dataset.
Feb 28 '16 at 2:22, by bwDraco
Did some experimentation with RAPID mode enabled on my laptop. On write-intensive workloads affecting the same data, RAPID mode can significantly reduce the amount of data written to the NAND, which means higher endurance.
Feb 28 '16 at 2:27, by bwDraco
A test using Anvil's Storage Utilities involving a total of 16 GB of writes to a 1 GB test file (QD8 128KB writes) led to only 2-3 GB of data actually getting written to the NAND.

when i was doing ramdisk stuff, it was always too small. but i didnt miss any of my ramdisk operations.
(and i dont set up a ramdisk anymore)

2:37 AM
Hmm. The recommended spec for DOOM is actually 8 GB of RAM.
Then again, it is very I/O-heavy. Load times are strongly impacted by the performance of your storage device. DOOM also streams textures from disk, so systems with less memory (whether system or graphics) may experience a drop in performance or visual quality (textures may visibly pop in).

Bob
2:50 AM
s/I\/O-heavy/poorly optimised/

lol
Its id.

The id Tech engine is really bad in this regard. They don't let the user set texture sizes; instead, they use "megatextures" and stream them from disk, using memory for caching as appropriate.

3:12 AM
hey guys, anybody got an idea on how you suppress those stupid suggested videos that overlay a video near the end

you do realise if we could answer it we would be guessing about what videos your referring to . uhh YouTube ?

Dog
Note to self: You'll never find a "cheap" gaming laptop with a GTX 1080 in it when the GTX 1080 is still a £500+ card on its own......

note to self devise way to get 2KW of power in a laptop battery, so a person can run a desktop level CPU & GPU in them for more than 30 minutes
thus us why we need BreifCase computers , a whole new line of thick laptops , that do all the things a real computer could do.
We will call the prototype the CandyCrusher , first laptop that will never have to play candy crush :-)

3:33 AM
@Psycogeek got just the thing
You'll love it. none of that newfangled integrated circuts

@Psycogeek .oops, well yea youtube

Won't play candy crush either

what other place overlays a video near the end of the ideo but before it stops?

quite a few

they should go burn in a pit then, but only after giving me all their videos
all that is fitting is the wrath of heaven on people who ruin the end of good videos
also we got a lot of animals on here...

3:38 AM
@Bob @Dog just spent $3 for a 1 hour "truly unlimited" data session from Verizon, called "PopData" (trying to download a game that's way too fucking big while keeping under 200 GB on my unlimited data plan)... it was just OK, not amazing... LOTS of de-prioritization or saturation or Steam sucking

"under 200 GB on my unlimited data plan"
:(
that word. It does not mean what it should mean

had drop-outs into the <100 KBps range several times in the early-going, then had a long period of between 4.5 and 5.5 MiB/s for about 30 minutes

Bob
:\

then at the tail end I had consistent speeds in the 2.5 to 4.0 MiB/s range with occasional peaks to 5 MiB/s
I ended up downloading about 18 GiB in 1 hour
my peak speed according to Steam was 6.8 MiB/s
but I only touched 6 MiB/s for a few seconds total
probably spent around 15-20% of the time at >= 5 MiB/s; 40% of the time between 4.0 and 4.9 MiB/s; 25% between 2 and 3.9 MiB/s; and the rest below 2 MiB/s

3:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek hmm, that pic reminds me that the NSA will be selling eventually all kinds of different spooked out vans , used for survelance. Turn it into an RV it will be pre-wired

that was the first time I've ever hit or exceeded 50 Mbps on Verizon LTE Advanced though
mebbe better radio on the iPhone 7 Plus than my AC791L hotspot
or they give higher priority to people who "actually" pay for their data than unlimited data "stealers"

That seems possible
and very like your US ISPs

very

I'd think the metered plan people get the highest priority for the data they pay for by the GiB; then unlimited data limited time users (PopData); then "true unlimited" lowest priority
in retrospect I should have probably chosen a more off-peak time to download than 9pm :P
like, y'know, 2:30 am

lol
.... wait
you paid for unlimited data while having unlimited data?

3:48 AM
@allquixotic Did you get the warning from Verizon?

@JourneymanGeek like I said, and as has been linked in here before, Verizon is starting to "crack down" on their grandfathered unlimited data plan users who use more than 200 GiB per month on average
@bwDraco nope

Bob
max of 34, currently 36. nice.

@allquixotic naw, I remember that. I'm just kinda confused to how it works
unless the add on unlimited plan is 'faster'

@JourneymanGeek what I did is buy an hour of true unlimited data (doesn't count against any limits) for $3 on my iPhone., then downloaded the shit out of a game on Steam

3:49 AM
I could have downloaded it for "free" on my unlimited data plan (the hotspot), but the increased usage would increase my chances of getting cut off in a future cull

different lines!
ok ok. Confusion sorted

it is unlimited unless we dont like you anymore

@bwDraco I asked the wrong question ;p

3:50 AM
or if you miss a single payment :-)

Bob
@allquixotic wait you can do that?

@Bob see the link bwDraco just linked to

@Bob different lines - the limited unlimited line's on a hotspot.
He bought the "temporarily" unlimited package for his phone

it's kind of nice, in theory; it doesn't restrict it to the phone, you can tether and literally max out what the modem will give you... so it's worth it as long as you know you'll be downloading more than, say, 10 gigs, and have good signal
wouldn't advise throwing money away on it in a region that has poor reception, or on an old device without all the bands, or with only periodic usage

3:53 AM
microtransactions

17 gigs for $3 is what I just got... considering that most Verizon plans sell metered data for between $3 and $10 (depending on the promotion you get) per GiB, that's a nice value

or $15 a gig at our friends AT$T

it's almost cheap enough that I could live off of that by itself
if it were $1.50 per hour, and allowed me to pay for hours in advance instead of hitting a button each hour, I might buy it

and unless you're like me and have automatic linux livecd downloads setup....
you can plan things like this ;p

I could pay $6 and get 4 hours (my evening prime time) unlimited data.. $6 per day isn't horrible for 40 - 50 Mbit with very stable connection and works anywhere you go
actually, they should also offer unlimited data plans with a bandwidth cap for less money per hour for moderate use... and then we're back to Verizon offering true unlimited data again
I'd take a baseline 20 Mbit for a 12 hour session for like $6 - $8
you can tell their network can handle it if they're actively selling hour data sessions where people can gobble down 17 GiB of data in a 40 - 50 Mbit session

3:58 AM
._.
I'm at 500gb of usage this month

I wouldn't be able to survive consuming that much; they'd cut me off

thats about 2X my usage, but are you talking everybody using it even if your proxing for other humans ?

no I'm the only human using it

Its probably mostly my human

4:01 AM
well i only got 1/2 the internet, you probably got the other half. If the apocalypse hits we should re-assemble it :-)

@allquixotic heh, I can probably reduce it a ton if I wanted to
and I think this is kinda including the period when I was seeding things heavily cause I forgot ;p
but yeah, 200gb would be painful with my current usage pattens
but I'd just go "the hell with it" and switch ISPs

if I had options I wouldn't be doing this

Omni.ISP.com owning all your bases

my other options are slower and far, far, far less reliable
as in, cellular is rock solid even during power outages, but ADSL/cable drop out when you cough, turn on a vacuum, walk down the stairs, or in light rain

Quite literally my other options are... all fibre
and if I move out I'll just have internet and nothing else

4:06 AM
there is still run a cat5 from the neighbors. After all, it took until they got the christmas lights down before they realised where that power cord was going :-)
I luv it how everyone thinks that the web should be free, but then they all secured thier wifi ;-O whats up with that.

now that powershell is ported to macOS, I should try to rewrite the XNU kernel in powershell @BenN (in reference to the star wall)

when I wrote a non-trivial program in powershell, I found myself saying "...oh. Damn fucking array unrolling!!!" about twice an hour
"how do I stop powershell from unrolling my arrays?" and "I want powershell to unroll this array but it's not; help!" were my two biggest gripes

4:19 AM
Wait what you can over clock HDDs ? :o

@HackToHell KEEP UP WITH THE PROGRAM!

OH MY GAWD I AM TRYING

OVERCLOCK EVERYTHING! OVERCLOCK THE TV! THE CLOCK! THE CAT! OVERCLOCK ALL THE THINGS!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ah, that makes more sense
> overclock the clock

Overclock the overclock too

Bob
4:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek overclock the overoverclock?
overclock the overclocked clock?
ok, clock doesn't look like a real word anymore

that reads like a pet project of a very senior (perhaps famous) Apple employee
I mean look how extensive it is @_@
lol, Chrome knows me. I typed "ve" in the address bar and it immediately jumps to verizon.com/home/fiosavailability

Bob
yay, mobo+PSU dispatched :D

Bob
40 min trip to pick up RAM later today
and hopefully everything is ready by Friday
@allquixotic debugger cheat sheet?
@allquixotic what's special about it?

@Bob eh, just the quality of the writing and how exhaustive it is

Bob
4:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek sounds reasonable :P
@allquixotic I do like that it's on one page.

@JourneymanGeek my life

Bob
I'm sure all the equivalent info is on MSDN, but actually finding it... *shudder*

@allquixotic yeah

Bob
Linux, on the other hand... is worse :\
It's open. But docs are ... lacking

Other than the whole "lack of a job" thing, we're pretty damned lucky and complain mostly about first world problems ;p

Bob
4:38 AM
Something obscure went wrong with Linux? Have fun tracking through a hundred obscure mailing list archives!

@Bob Something obscure went wrong with Windows? Have fun tracking through a hundred poorly-written Microsoft Answers posts! ;-P

!!thatword

Something obscure went wrong with MacOS? Have fun being told you're using it wrong by high-brow forum monkeys sitting at Starbucks writing answers on Apple's forums!

Bob
@allquixotic Ha. It's almost habit to -answers.microsoft.com on searches now :P

4:41 AM
lol

Bob
But yea the debugging steps are actually pretty well documented on MSDN. If you can survive the massive SDK download and install. Ugh.

Something obscure went wrong with OS/2?

Bob
@allquixotic Apple is ... weird.
They have good API docs.
And pretty decent dev support.

@Bob they also open source their kernel and a lot of other things
just not enough to build your own

Bob
unless Safari is involved

4:43 AM
I've dealt with issues configuring the Linux kernel while I was building a Gentoo installation. Where the heck do I enable memory ballooning under Hyper-V?

Bob
As soon as you look up/ask about Safari, you get nothing

What do mac users usually use?

@JourneymanGeek they don't open source their userspace API "kits" aside from BSD stuff

Bob
@bwDraco ...are those two statements related?

firefox? chrome?

4:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek chrome

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Chrome, probably. Though I know a lot of Firefox [UI] devs use Firefox on macOS.

@Bob Yeah. Was trying to install Gentoo into a VM, wanted to enable the guest services in the kernel. The Hyper-V options were scattered across several different configuration sections.

Bob
But iOS is Safari-only.

granted, my reasons for running firefox are strange

Bob
Want to support iOS/iPhones? Gotta have desktop Safari too, if you want a (terrible) debugger.

4:45 AM
"I run an outdated plugin that might get killed off any time soon, cause I want to save vertical desktop space, despite having a ludicious number of pixels"

Bob
@bwDraco No one ever accused Gentoo of being user friendly :P
@JourneymanGeek It'll probably be killed off in FF57
@bwDraco Look for hv_balloon

@Bob yeah, I will miss oneliner

and the fork that's supposed to be a newer version sucks

god damn, it gets about 0.3 FPS ... you think they could make their window border more complicated? what ever happened to rectangular windows?

4:47 AM
lol
too mainstream

@Bob Yeah. It took me ages to find it. I really wish there was a search box for the kernel configuration UI.

Q: How to reverse lookup linux kernel config option in menuconfig

PatrickIf I find an option in .config that I would like to enable or disable. Is there a quick way to find it in menuconfig menu? i.e. I don't want CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM to be set. I had to guess where I can find it in the make menuconfig sub-menu. Is there a programmatic way or a faster way to find the...

...Wow. Totally missed that. / opens a search bar.

Bob
My search history while looking up stuff like this has gotta be really weird :P
@bwDraco lol, that's just Vi syntax :P
which also applies to less et al
good one to keep in mind :P

I know how to search in Vi and less and have done this before. It's just I don't expect this in the kernel config wizard.
I clearly missed the instructions.

4:51 AM
man, ESO is weird

> Press <Esc><Esc> to exit, <?> for Help, </> for Search.

it downloads these little ~50MB files and then "applies" (without downloading anything) a ~5 - 10 GiB (!) patch based on that tiny data, somehow, and has to transfer like 50 MiB/s on the disk subsystem as it does it

Bob
@allquixotic Where do you get the 5-10 GB patch size from?
Cause it sounds like a fairly typical delta patch.

@Bob the launcher

Bob
@allquixotic Sounds more like the launcher was reporting the full size? idk

5:04 AM
also idek what's wrong with their networking stack but I'm getting about 100 KB/s from them
@Bob could be

Bob
@allquixotic That's considered good for a non-CDN'd server here :P

5:16 AM
i just formatted 22TB of partition off my computer. All i am left with is my backup drives. It is more scary than a thriller or horror flick.
but i have never been without a backup, now i are one.

hey guys :(
I remember one of you had something patented and Im wondering if you have any guidance for how I patent my coding invention

5:28 AM
yeah you guys love your powershell.....

I don't think anyone here has anything patented
and most folks here are likely anti software patent

yess I think it was Arda!

I never patented anything , i am a comunist :-) first thing you do is find out if there is anything like it or similar to it in any way. next thing is to find out if it is patentable via the simple guidlines they supply for "what is patentable". Next make sure you got 10,000$ to get it actually patented , and to pay a real patent lawyer, and protect the patent. Next try and make the 10Kback by charging people to use it, and protecting it at the same time.
Solution B , document it as your authorship (copyright) at all stages prior to releace , start a patent process. Sell sell sell, wh

@Psycogeek probably considers it a newfangled thing

does america recognize canadian patents? :P

5:31 AM
I don't think they do, strictly speaking

there are milllions more people in america
so it would be worth it more if I patented it in america huh
do rich people like donald trump steal patents from third world countries and get them patented in america to make money off it
that sounds wrong I dont think the world works this way..

why steal it, people (inc me) would sell out for little.

@Arda , journeyman wants to know if you have a patent
so JMG how has everything been with you? :)
hi psycogeek :D
oh no taylor swift is no longer a topic???

many companies have aquired patents via|while swollowing up the whole corporation itself , like make an awesome competition for microsoft, and hope you win the MS just bought you out lottery.

yeah that sounds good

Bob
5:36 AM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Are you sure you're not thinking of copyright?
Copyright is very different from a patent.

I'm thinking about an process I have invented that I would like to protect as my own to make money

TL;DW: a girl fresh-out of college (or maybe even a high school intern) speaks into a $5 mic about how to do a self-service emissions test with a device that downloads your OBD-II info and transmits it wirelessly for $10 to make sure you comply with state emissions regulations. The kiosk displays the default Windows 7 desktop background while loading between screens.

@allquixotic sounds almost robotic

5:46 AM
@allquixotic what is a OBD II info?

it did not test the gas cap ?? here in ca they test to see if the gas cap leaks vapors and has to be replaced. the guy also is supposed to look the car over for any modifications ,like ones used to trick the thing temporarily to pass.

no no she was speaking into a dynamic mic when she shouldnt have

Why would it be USB? It's perfectly fine the way it is.

what do you do when your about to be sued for 2 Billion dollers?
charity work and fast http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-visits-dallas-texas-to-meet-locals-testify-in-lawsuit-against-oculus-2017-1
"The billionaire Facebook CEO helped plant fruits and vegetables in a community garden in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to his Facebook page. He also met with computer science students from a local public high school.
Zuckerberg's main reason for being in Dallas is to testify on Tuesday in a $2 billion lawsuit that claims the Oculus VR company he acquired in 2014 was based on stolen technology. He and other key Oculus executives, including Palmer Luckey, will take the stand this week to defend the company against video game maker Zenimax. "

trying to install XP on a period accurateish machine
god. this is a serious pain in the rear.
None of the drivers are autodetecting, I'm doing it in compatibility mode, lenovo's new driver page is terrible
WHY DO PEOPLE EVEN INFLICT THIS UPON THEMSELVES 0_0
hm. I'd ask, why am I? ;p

auto? it is XP :-)

vaguely
it detected the video driver
also XP is slightly confused that I have the installer on a USB key

7:36 AM
and it broke

feex it

@JourneymanGeek I never use autodetect

yeah, I need to get a dll file off a working install

I can grab the corrupted file off a VM

@JourneymanGeek ...missing mobo, case and psu
technically the most important parts
sigh

@Bob so the lungs, heart and backbone ;p
