YES?
LOL NO

make sure you convert it to base64

and then rot13 the base64... for security
convert that to binary

Bob
and rot13 it again for good measure

3:01 PM
and then reverse it
and then delete that file and do it again to a copy
for security

@GuitarShoeDave that is... ... ...
...
Almost as bad as when I wrote LSLFS, remember that @allquixotic

@electronbeam no, and I don't want to, and neither do you
was that with libfuse?

@allquixotic no, it was entirely in LSL

3:04 PM
oh

I want SE chat FS. course, that's sure to result in a speedy ban

I believe this is sort of thing that happens when programmers drink heavily

you could just base64 the file contents and store it in a trash room

@JourneymanGeek did you see my python code from Friday?

3:06 PM
right on

@electronbeam I think so
@allquixotic I think many would settle for an API so ugly hacks arn't needed for chatbots ;p

allow me to refresh your memory

@JourneymanGeek That pen I've been looking for. webmail.daisojapan.com/…

Pretty sure I have one of those on my desk ;p
its not bad

Dog
3:08 PM
@allquixotic lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea I already have one ;P

DNSfs would be pretty cool too.. Storing arbituary binary data within fake ipv6 address records.

@Dog I've sent that guy, like, $170.10 over the years

Dog
Oh so the enterprise gets destroyed again in the new movie huh

once every couple of months I send him a $17.01 donation :D

3:10 PM
@JourneymanGeek no worries, i was just checking before i make a mistake

Dog
@allquixotic Picard? Or the Youtube guy who made the vid?

@Dog the guy who made the vid

@JourneymanGeek also in edity's defense he didn't swear in that part of the transcript.... however i take the point

@Burgi Its also a Captain America Joke

:)

3:11 PM
github.com/defuse/dnsfs - looks like someone implemented something similiar storing based64 using txt records

@Burgi edity had... other issues

Wow. TP-Link got in trouble for transmitting at too high a power level :\

@Burgi not to mention the whole idea of that is to modify behaviour without too much negative reinforcement ;p

3:13 PM
quick, someone write twitterfs

As for the open-source issue with these routers: Isn't this why we have separate baseband firmware and OS images on Android devices?

@bwDraco cost

ugh!

> anyone who has eaten clam chowder in New England has probably eaten flesh from this species, many of which are likely several hundred years old.

3:22 PM
That seems... merciless.

Basically, the radio runs on its own proprietary firmware independent from the main system, ensuring ultimate control of the radios is separate from the OS software.
@Bob Wait, today?

Bob
@bwDraco Ya.
I'll leave it till the weekend, at a minimum. Don't feel like dealing with potential update issues right now.

yawn

FTP is totally broken on this server

FTP is totally broken

3:41 PM
i need some time to form a reasonable question for you guys to help me with
also since upgrading to win10 i have to run everything as administrator any quick suggestions?

What do you mean by "everything"? Do you get UAC prompts for programs that shouldn't need it?
Make sure it didn't up your UAC setting to the max. Also see if for some reason the compatibility system decided everything needs admin privileges (see the Compatibility tab)

if i launch phpstorm normally i get:
02/08/2016
16:46	Unable to save settings: Failed to save settings. Please restart PhpStorm
the error disappears when i run as admin

Where is is trying to save its settings?

Man, I haven't had such good ice cream in years...

i'll check

We Americans are so weird. Everyone writes day first but we write month first!
We use imperial units when everyone else uses metric!

Bob
@Burgi make sure you have write permissions to your own user profile

Unlike pretty much every other English-speaking country, we have our own dialect of English!
AARGH!
Why does America have to be so different from everyone else?!

It's like everything we do is at odds with the conventions used by everyone else!

Onebox goshdarnit
@bwDraco technically... the brits are worse
they use quite literally whatever they feel like

3:58 PM
@JourneymanGeek: You need to actually use a chat message reply. It seems you find it inconvenient to use the mouse to click the reply button...

@bwDraco Yeah, I'm on my laptop.
but its an ongoing conversation so meh

lol

@BenN <SYSTEM DRIVE>\Users\<USER ACCOUNT NAME>\.<PRODUCT><VERSION>

What's the ACL on that folder?

@Bob i have full control

4:05 PM
An icacls output is fine
What's the integrity level of it?

anterior cruciate ligament?

Access Control List - type icacls \path\to\folder in a command prompt and paste the output, please

@JourneymanGeek I usually use the hissing cat date format.

of course you do

unfortunately the support for it in most programming languages is quite bad

Q: Allow Documentation in other Stack Exchange communities

Tyler ZikaI'm a Salesforce developer and would love Documentation to be available in other Stack Exchange communities. The reason is salesforce.stackexchange.com a lot of Salesforce developers get help, especially newer ones like myself. The developer forums and documentation on developer.salesforce.com is...

"We'd love to roll this out network-wide, but we've been in public beta for less than a week, and the product isn't quite ready to go elsewhere. We are actively iterating on docs by fixing bugs and making improvements. Once it is known to work, then we can discuss the possibility of adding it to other sites but that won't be for 6-8 weeks. "

Dog
!!caat

@BenN yes

4:22 PM
What's the ACL on the specific file it tries to write to?

Dog
I hate WYSIWYG editors. Because WYS is NEVER WYG.

@Dog WYSINWYG
yeah, it's funny, programmatic editors tend to be much more accurate and predictable
things like LaTeX and markdown

Dog
Yeah.

there are multiple in there, i'm not sure which it is failing on

Dog
Although LaTeX isn't an option in this case, using the "Edit raw WikiText" button is pretty close.
Editing the raw markup is so much better though you can't paste formatted text.

4:34 PM
@bwDraco meh. You're making a pretty big deal over something essentially harmless.

Sorry. I'm still learning not to overreact, and it seems I have a long way to go...
I'm trying to take a lighter approach to moderation.

druggie watch update: the police just arrived and have missed the dealer by 10 mins

A light approach to moderation is the only approach that should be taken.

@Burgi maybe they did the obvious drivearound

I'm sorry to anyone I may have offended.

yeah but that's only him
I think he's searching for something in the transcripts.

4:38 PM
lol me?

lol no

I've already made some changes so that I'm not as likely to overreact, but it's very much a work in progress.

why does that sound like a corporate PR statement?

But becoming a more light-spirited and relaxed person is ultimately a wholesale personality change that will continue to be very challenging.
lol
I've promised the community I will never make moderation decisions on emotion. I stand by my word.

it's all right to be yourself. Don't force changes on you or others.

4:42 PM
@bwDraco you're not a mod.
And really there's no pressure to be or act like one

@JourneymanGeek Say that again.

I just want to be the best person I can be.

And really there's no pressure to be or act like one
or act in any way, outside normal, decent (mostly) human beings

We’ll be upgrading our SQL cluster masters to SQL 2016 CU1 on Wednesday night at 9:00PM EDT (01:00 August 4th UTC). The outage window should be minimal, a few minutes at most as we move all services to the current replicas. Details One of the unexpected issues we hit with the SQL 2016 upgrade was a performance degradation, resulting in much higher CPU usage on the masters of our SQL cluster wit

- Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607.
Who here is running Windows 10 v1607 right now?

how do i check?
1511 here

@bwDraco Hah. Not with this crap internet.
Oh. An update is ready
Urk. No. An update is going to drain my internet for X hours

Are you ready? This is an OS upgrade more than it is an update. Your existing installation media will no longer work if you want to do a repair-install; you must generate new Windows installation media.

Windows Update is slurping it at the moment

o_O
it's a big one?

6:25 PM
3 GB.

Dog
Holy cow.

Big enough, it's already started filling $WINDOWS.~BT so I'm assuming it's an install/upgrade

Dog
Google maps smooth zooming with WebGL at 120fps is trippy as hell

Much akin to the first release and TH2

Dog
@Mokubai Oh the anniversary update?

6:26 PM
Aye

Huh, I'm still on 1511 and it says there are no updates available, and nothing is downloading at the moment

Dog
Relax, it just got released today

I just clicked "check updates" in the Windows Update Metro settings thing and it started downloading

Dog
If it's anything like previous releases it'll be staggered so Microsoft don't have 500 million people hitting their servers at the same time.

Well my internet is crap slow so I'm not going to be a burden to their servers :/

6:29 PM
haha i got defender update

It's probably "Awww dude, check this slow internet, he's gonna need a week..."

Dog
Wow the Galaxy Note 7 is ugly as f***

@Dog Given the S7, it's about what I expected. I'm glad I'm waiting for the next upgrade cycle
The S7 looked ugly as heck too, S6 had nice sharp sleek lines

Dog
@Mokubai Well yeah, there were no real surprises. But it still manages to be uglier than the S7

HWG, updating to the new build of Windows

6:34 PM
@Dog Yeah, that is kinda surprising...

Dog
> The Galaxy Note 7 comes in black, silver, gold and blue. Pre-orders should begin in the UK and Europe on August 16, with a retail release date of September 2. Pricing isn't known yet, but expect it to be expensive: around £700/€800.
Well Gold and blue are super tacky
Black... could be worse. Not seen the silver version yet
Huh, the Titanium Silver seems to be the only version that doesn't look terrible
But then that's a press render vs. IRL photos
Bleh. Need to wash my bike. But I'm too lazy.

it'll be dark soon
if it isn't there already
(it's grey outside here :/)

Dog
Yeah. Yesterday I didn't get round to it because Chrome crashed and by the time I stopped being pissed off it was dark already.
I should probably just buy a hosepipe so I don't need to go down to the garage.

stop procrastinating!
/me tries to help
hmmmm yah
tho aren't you not meant to wash a bike like that?

Dog
@djsmiley2k Wait what?
Not wash it with a hosepipe?

6:43 PM
blah
bleh

yeahg?

welp

Dog
I'm confused

lol
I just like these words.

Dog
Why am I not supposed to wash it with a hosepipe?

6:44 PM
Gotta run an errand so might not be around.

i thought the water mght be bad in the gears etc
seems thats the normal way, and then you re-lube it

Dog
Ah, yeah.

Dog
6:58 PM
I don't have a chain though and the gears should be sealed away. Though I really need to check the manual.
Great, I've lost the manual

no chain o_O?
is this a penny farthing?

Dog
It's either belt drive or shaft drive.

what kind of bike is this o_O I was thinking peddlebike

So, do we know if the Anniversary update finally removes Flash? Seems like it'd be an easy win for security....

Dog
@djsmiley2k oh its a motorbike

7:00 PM
ah ok
then sure go crazy :D

Dog
"Having ABS does not mean you can take unnecessary risks. ABS does not compensate for poor judgement"

7:17 PM
lol @ "ABS does not compensate for poor judgement"

Dog
Oh, apparently I shouldn't use the pressure washers they have at petrol stations and garages. So I'll have to get a hosepipe

@Dog o_O Why not? ;/

Dog
@djsmiley2k Cos the manual says so

8:00 PM
@Dog are you updating your avatar as well?

well, not sure if that's pure cause and effect
I'm going to see how the windows 10 upgrade goes.

Good luck

8:55 PM
There was a huge update pushed out.

Lots of 2K's

@Mokubai something is not right...

Interestingly, LQP answer reviews show "Recommend Deletion" or "Delete", but LQP question reviews always say "Close", never "Recommend Close"

@MichaelFrank High enough rep for review, but not high enough to actually close. You can flag to close to push it into the queue I believe

8:58 PM
Yep, though I imagine it gets through LQP faster than Close Votes

Dang, no disk space.
Need 6 GB, let's see what should I nuke..

@Mokubai OH, I thought all close votes were created equal.

No, not mod close votes.

@Mokubai That's just weird.

Mods don't really vote to close something, they just kinda lock the door.

8:59 PM
@oldmud0 Mod votes are equal, we just get all of them

@oldmud0 They're immediate, and there's no limit on how many mods can cast, but they can be reversed by normal reopen votes

has prying open a question with a bounty ever worked in the history of SU

OOOOooookay. Just found an amusing bug in Windows 10 (currently pre-Anniversary)

@oldmud0 Only if you use a virtual crowbar :)

You can't cast reopen votes on a bountied question, because closing it requires refunding the bounty IIRC

9:02 PM
And when I try to replicate it, it fixes itself :/

@oldmud0 o_O what is that?

@Mokubai That's called a heisenbug

you'll have to guess, sorry

I think it's a graphic of disk utilization by directory

9:03 PM
In computer programming jargon, a heisenbug is a software bug that seems to disappear or alter its behavior when one attempts to study it. The term is a pun on the name of Werner Heisenberg, the physicist who first asserted the observer effect of quantum mechanics, which states that the act of observing a system inevitably alters its state. In electronics the traditional term is probe effect, where attaching a test probe to a device changes its behavior. Similar terms, such as bohrbug, mandelbug, and schrödinbug have been occasionally proposed for other kinds of unusual software bugs, sometimes...

I get stuff like that all the time. Do you also get the fun Start Menu that doesn't want to open? What about the Settings button that doesn't work? "We installed updates, click here for more details." *click* ... *nothing happens*?

I love Win10, but some of the silly UI bugs really grind me.

isn't bash for windows just interix?

@oldmud0 It's not available on Windows 10.

what, ultron?

Interix.

oh.......
well duh, but now there's bash for windows
which looks like it's basically interix
Also thank JMG for Veeam, it worked perfectly.
I'm going to upload the backup file to Glacier.

9:34 PM
@oldmud0: not exactly.. the version thats being developed can even run elf binaries.
at least the windows 10 one that Canonical is working on (i cant spell)

Easy for MS to do. They just don't want to.
Canonical*

thanks ;)

Think canon.

I always think of CNAME.. but i still have problems spelling it
:-D
but that's easier to rremember.

I take my bike down to the garage to get it cleaned and refuelled
After I clean and dry it, I lock my keys in the trunk.
Fine, I have a spare key at home. But my house key is also in the trunk.
My flatmate's 1000 miles away, so can't exactly give me his spare
So now it starts raining and I'm stuck in the rain and my phone battery is dying
With my last few percent of battery I Google how to break into the trunk of my vehicle
Looking suspicious as ever, turns out it's a two minute job. Done, I'm in.
Oh and I used my last dry towel to dry the bike so I have nothing to dry myself with when I go shower.

10:25 PM
Sounds like you had a fun day. :/

Dog
@MichaelFrank Best day of my life.
Not
On the plus side, I did use the pressure washer to clean the thing, against the recommendation in the manual, and it still works.

@Dog who would bellieve that motorcycle luggage could be gotten into in 2 minutes :-) that is why i liked my luggage to be removable. and got a motion sensitive type alarm for the bike.

Dog
@Psycogeek Yeah :-/ I used to think it was semi-secure... nup.
It's great for keeping a helmet in while parked, but a decent helmet can be over £200 these days, so also nuh-uh

helmet locks work, I know because any key will fit them :-)

Dog
I don't have an alarm but it is datatagged. I should get a proper lock though

10:32 PM
oh you got a gps lowjack system on it?

Dog
Nah, just some invisible security markings
Makes it slightly harder to sell, but that's about it.

Goodbye Windows 7....
I used you for 7 years..
will I use windows 10 for ten?

Are you using the Media Creation Tool or the accessibility-deadline-extending tool?
I'm not sure if you get to keep your license if you use the MCT after July 29

"accessibility-deadline-extending tool" huh

so, the latter

> When does the free upgrade offer extension end?
We have not announced an end date of the free upgrade offer for customers using assistive technology.
So... basically free upgrades forever...

yes, we can read

Dog
It doesn't even ask if you actually use assistive technology... the heck
I mean I do have legit assistive technology software on my disability-benefits student laptop, but I'm not running it on there
Also I kinda lost the hard drive for that laptop about three years ago
> People who assistive technologies still quality for the free upgrade, though Microsoft doesn't ask for any evidence that you actually use such tools.
Lol. -_-
I'm surprised no tech site seems to have actually covered this in detail.
> Update: Microsoft delivered a statement to ZDNet stating that this tool is not designed to be a workaround for users who don’t use assistive technology and missed the deadline. However, there’s no indication on exactly how or if Microsoft verifies that an upgrader uses assistive tools.
Yeah. So while it probably works in practice you may as well be installing a pirated copy because you're doing so in violation of the terms under which it's provided.
> Earlier this week, Microsoft told my colleague Mary Jo Foley that the Get Windows 10 (GWX) notifications will end. They added, "In time, we will remove the application."
FINALLY. I've had to endure that shit for a year now...
> Microsoft to Block Free Windows 10 Upgrade “Assistive Tech” Trick
> within the next couple of weeks that webpage and tool will be removed and instead require you to contact MS support directly to upgrade this way,” he explains.
No surprise there
Thanks to eegits like the above abusing it.
