Bob
12:00 AM
Not that any of those drives have failed yet

\o/ I got a prescreening email somewhere big

If you're considering a new server, you can get this cheap one for $260

Bob
perks of having a USB hub with power switches? :P

USB drives aren't meant to be a permanent solution

Bob
they're just switched off most of the time

12:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yay!

(certain CDN that the network used to use)
@BenN tradition here is we don't name em. Lets call em "watervaporflash corp"

Dog
There are only like, 5 big CDNs worldwide

Bob
@BenN *cough* *cough*

@BenN Probably shipping costs $100 alone

Granted, I don't have any idea what to call the place I'm contracting at

Bob
12:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek dodgycontractor corp

rhymes with nabisco?

Dog
Steam flash corp? :-/

@JourneymanGeek do you think that @cat/@kerbalspacebecky/@qwertyuiop/@qasdfdsaq recent name change is to try and get into your good books?

@Burgi no

Dog
12:02 AM
!!tell 31422748 shoedave Burgi

They just like changing their name a lot

@Burgi guitars @Burgi around a bit with @Dave's shoe!

@oldmud0 NewEgg says free shipping

what O_O
what the actual

Bob
@BenN HP microserver can be had for even cheaper, if you don't need CPU power
iirc they have a Pentium

Dog
12:03 AM
Raspberri Pi
Is probably as powerful as his old dinosaur

@oldmud0 the catch being its a slightly older processor

If all you need is web, though, it probably won't be super noticeable

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Ermm what?

watervaporflash corp.....
OH!
congrats

Dog
@Burgi I'm confused

12:05 AM
or good luck

@Burgi the latter

Bob
@Burgi "prescreening email" :P

Quick question. How good/bad is it if most of your answers are based off their support documents?

Dog
Cloudflash? Steamlight?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I hope they don't need you right now, what with the other place

12:06 AM
@dog think light and fluffy

@Bob these places typically have slow hiring times, and its remote.

Dog
Subliming dry ice?

Bob

@Bob Compared to his pentium 3...

Bob

'night

Bye

Bob
@Dog 3?!?!

Dog
I don't think performance is really an issue

Bob
Ok, take the celery -_-

Dog
@Bob Yes, 3.

12:07 AM
Screw it, I'm tossing the server.

Dog
Or 4.
> Processors Up to two Intel® XEON™ III processors at 2.4GHz, 2.8GHz, 3.06GHz and 3.20GHz
Chipset Intel E7501 chipset

Bob
@Dog and here I thought the server2003 machine (with some NetBurst-era Xeon) we decommissioned in 2013 was old...

What's the point.

Dog
Ah its Netburst P4. Nvm.
Stupid deceptive Google result previews

I think that server I linked above would be a good fit

12:08 AM
@Dog you talking about my server?

Dog
@oldmud0 Woof.

Bob
@BenN depends on the budget? :P

@JourneymanGeek That's an affirmative.

Bob
I mean, if you're replacing a 15 year old server... the celery would do fine, for cheaper :P

Dog
12:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Woof.
Woof = yes, woof woof = no.

Do I look like bloody lassie to you? ;p

Dog
> Dual processor NetBurst-based Xeon chipsets[edit]
E7500 corresponded to the first Northwood-based Pentium4 Xeons, E7501 is essentially identical but supports faster FSB and memory.

Bob
@Dog I thought it was the other way around

@Bob Right, $260; which can be earned in a few weeks

Dog
@Bob Woof woof woof?

12:10 AM
Screw that, I'll just take the dell dimension I have sitting under my desk.

Bob
@BenN vs $150

Has two satas.
It's 32 bit but guess what
I dont care

@Bob Ah, I didn't know how to translate pounds to freedom money ;)

Dog
I have a crappy old mobo with an Athlon64 x2 in it and 6 SATA slots
And 4GB (or 8?) of DDR2 RAM.
Not worth selling... wonder how much it'd cost to ship

Nahh I could go to any computer store and scrap something of equal value.

Bob
12:11 AM
@BenN I just pulled that from the first Google search result with a price. it's some 200-230 AUD for a Pentium version here in AU

Dog
Then why are you still living with a first-gen Pentium 4? o_0

Bob
dunno what US stores to search

I wonder if computer stores allow this kind of public scrapping.
I gave one away to someone.

Dog
@Bob Newegg

Bob
@Dog they don't stock the low-end ones
only the Xeon ones for 400+

12:13 AM
@Dog its a reasonable starving student server.

Dog
There's a cat cafe in Thailand called Catmosphere

Bob
> Diskless Configuration (No RAID, No Controller)

Dog
@JourneymanGeek If you don't pay for electricity...

Bob
o.O

@Dog many students don't

Dog
12:14 AM
The price of a day's electricity running that thing would buy a Raspberry Pi, which would probably be faster

Bob
No controller?

Dog
@Bob Probably means no RAID controller, I doubt there's zero onboard SATA ports

(hell, if you're local and don't mind the slight risk of your server suddenly dying, I have a gigabyte NUC class machine I'm willing to let you have at a very reasonable price)

Bob
ah

Dog
Then again, thin clients with SATA DOM or USB drives internally aren't unheard of

Bob
12:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek "slight" risk :P

@Bob Its happened twice.

Bob
not-so-slight then

Hi!

12:16 AM
and my reasonable price, I quite literally mean something like covering my transport costs.

Dog
I'm a cat, meaow, check meowt
Oh wait, dino turned me into a dog.
Bark bark. Woof woof.
!!taytaytay

Bob
flop

12:21 AM
What am I supposed to look up to find places where I (as a consumer) can take stuff from rather than give items to to computer recycling centers?
Bunch of stores close to where I live accept computer crap.
Are they ok with me just taking some of that crap?

@oldmud0 Ask them and see :)

Ye but I'm just a kid. No rep
Fine.

Dog
Dammit why does spending money make my bank balance go down so much :-(

12:36 AM
this fits with the theme

Why is Outlook send and receive so clunky
I mean I like Outlook, but the send and receive dialog just irritates me
Also, I get more email for some reason when I have outlook open.

@oldmud0 I once ran a system a picked up from the curb. Core 2 I believe. Used it for maybe a year before my current ivy bridge box

Dog
12:53 AM
Wow core 2 is so old it's older than my cat

My home server was a old school HP workstation I picked up from the side of the road. Now it's a Dell C2D model.

Dog
My home server is a Xeon E3v3
It was the newest xeon you could buy at the time.
It used to be an AMD Sempron

Too bad CPUs can't be upgraded.

Bob
You just haven't tried hard enough. A hammer helps.
Maybe a chisel too, if it's a BGA one.
(correct operation of CPU post-upgrade is not guaranteed)

Big servers have easily swappable CPUs IIRC
I think I've seen someone switch out a CPU on a normal desktop too, but I'm not sure

1:04 AM
Yea but big servers
Cuz they use backplanes.
But nooooo, thanks to ibm's crap back in the 80s/90s swappable CPUs wasn't made into something standard

Dog
1:26 AM
Damn, my highest rated answer is still that one which started as basically a snarky comment about a question that wasn't even a real question

1:47 AM
guten jobu!

So it seems that web dev has lower pay than other developer jobs...
However, as with anything in the computing world, you can always learn new skills to move up the ladder and take your existing experience to a higher-paying position.

What, most people are just interested in the cosmetics
Just like how all graphic artists use Macs and Fatoshop

well what is it?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek heh. gitter/steam?

Steam is probably better

Bob

The hacking challenge was a success!

Bob
lol
how long did it take them?
was rather short iirc

Sent
falls over
I hope I was right in assuming the last question was a trick question

Bob
o.O

@Bob more than two hours
With lots of hints
The first challenge was actually cracking a WEP connection
Only the guys managed to do it

Bob
@Rahul2001 ... -_-
@Rahul2001 ... ... ... that's not a challenge
that's an instruction-following exercise
with a healthy dose of luck

7:14 AM
@Bob Well, apparently even that is challenging for them

Bob
@Rahul2001 no, see healthy dose of luck
especially if they're using their own equipment

And then this guy's like, 'I don't know PHP!'
And I'm like, 'Well, what the f*ck are you doing in a hacking challenge?'

Bob
i.e. "WEP Cracking" is not a fair challenge

@Bob how so?

Bob
see "healthy dose of luck"
@Rahul2001 There's really several ways it's unfair. If they're using their own equipment and you didn't announce this ahead of time, they might not have a WLAN card capable of monitor mode. They might not have a capable OS prepared.
Apart from that, whether the key is found is somewhat luck-based.
Also, unless you were saturating the connection (to force more packets to be transmitted) then a key could take days to find.
In a timed challenge? "WEP cracking" is more luck and whether you happened to have the equipment, not skill.

7:27 AM
We had wlan cards for them
And bootable Kali usbs
Even desktops if they wanted them...

Bob
Ah, you provided all equipment? That's better.
Doesn't remove the whole luck factor, but at least it solves equipment.
(The luck factor: there's a random component, so you could have identical dumps and still one machine will finish earlier...)

morning

Hello
@Bob luck is always a factor... I minimised it as much as I could...

Bob
@Rahul2001 heh. I suppose it depends how many people had no idea where to start, and how many did all the right steps but did not find the key anyway.
the latter would simply be unlucky...

7:43 AM
There was no one like that...

Bob
ow.

Dude, it's WEP for God's sake...

Bob
needs more google-fu
@Rahul2001 you realise WEP doesn't exactly transmit passphrases in cleartext?

Most participants started downloading aircrack when they heard the challenge...
@Bob it's still easier than WPA

Bob
there's a reason the attacks are complex statistical analysis, etc.

7:45 AM
> I've been googling for how to do this for over 10 minutes

Bob
@Rahul2001 technically? WPA attacks are simpler
they're also less likely to succeed... but simpler
since they more or less amount to brute-forcing

it smells like it but lacks links

dosen't smell like potted meat product to me

Bob
@Burgi judging by his other answers? no.

just a little low quality then

7:57 AM

handy map of the family tree
The biological family Canidae /ˈkænᵻdiː/ is a lineage of carnivorans that includes domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, jackals, dingoes, and many other extant and extinct dog-like mammals. A member of this family is called a canid (/ˈkænᵻd/, /ˈkeɪnᵻd/). The cat-like feliforms and dog-like caniforms emerged within the Carnivoramorpha 43 million years before present. The caniforms included the fox-like Leptocyon genus whose various species existed from 34 million years before present before branching 11.9 million YBP into Vulpini (foxes) and Canini (canines). Canids are found on all continents except...

@Burgi this should be on meta. Along with renaming chat woof access. On April first.

@Dog you've been a dog less than 24 hours

@Dog what did your fail?
@microbuster hi

@Rahul2001 how are you

Fgsfdfsds. Translation work for Magento just took a dive to the deep end >.>

Bob
@Leathe your first mistake was using Magento :P

well I get paid for this, so ehh

@Bob better for you and me

@Bob is "nonce" really a slang term for sexual criminal, or is google translate joking with me?
"An error occurred validating the nonce" WELL THEN.

Dog
9:01 AM
@Burgi it's still their fault
@Rahul2001 if I told you I'd have to lick you.

now I need to figure out the heck a nonce is, and then find a word for it in Finnish

Bob
@Leathe nah
nonce is a single-use token
In cryptography, a nonce is an arbitrary number that may only be used once. It is similar in spirit to a nonce word, hence the name. It is often a random or pseudo-random number issued in an authentication protocol to ensure that old communications cannot be reused in replay attacks. They can also be useful as initialization vectors and in cryptographic hash function. == Definition == A nonce is an arbitrary number used only once in a cryptographic communication, in the spirit of a nonce word. They are often random or pseudo-random numbers. Many nonces also include a timestamp to ensure e...

Hmm. there doesn't seem to be a direct translation to finnish for that

Okay, that was unnecessarily perverted...

It has several definitions, one of which, as you noted, is UK slang for a prisoner who has been convicted of a particular kind of crime. That comes from "Not On Normal Communal Excercise" as they are in danger of being attacked by other prisoners.

Here ends the English lesson :)
@Leathe

9:16 AM
Oh, that reminds me, I made a new school record
In the English test
34.5/35
She cut marks because you cannot get full in English

@Dog no no. You need to work on your dogging. That is not how you threaten someone.

@Rahul2001 Congrats

Apparently, there's always room for improvement...
@DavidPostill :D

@Rahul2001 Your English is way better than a lot of posters on Super User :)

@DavidPostill :D
@JourneymanGeek lol

Bob
9:23 AM
@DavidPostill to be fair, I don't think that's a very high bar :P

Fail fail fail fail FAIL FAIL

whats up?

Dog
Wait two and a half months for a doctors appointment... Slept through it.

Ooops

Dog
Stupid cats. Kept me awake last night

9:32 AM
I find a bucket of cold water normally does the trick :)

you should have set extra alarms

Dog
All. Their. Fault.
I forgot to set even a single alarm.

@Dog that sucks

Bob
ouch

Dog
Now I'm so pissed off I've lost my glasses and missed work. I hate cats.

9:35 AM
@Dog Use Google keep? Or Google calendar?

Bob
@Rahul2001 kinda a biiiiiit late now, isn't it?

@Dog I have a smartphone. One of the things I like is that I can set an alarm when I enter an appointment in the calendar. That means I can't forget later. It also means my smartphone is smarter than me :)

also does it automatically sometimes

@Dog Maybe your cats secretly plotted all this because you renamed yourself to dog...
@Bob in future?

@JourneymanGeek True. But then I may need to adjust the alarm time to allow for traveling time etc ...

Dog
9:37 AM
@Rahul2001 I did, didn't help
@Rahul2001 hmm so it's all their fault and they're evil
I need something that's a combination of Khaaaaaaaan and caat. Maybe... khaaaaaaant?

@Dog they just hate traitors...

Dog
@Rahul2001 I didn't rename myself.

Imagine Dogina 'Doggy' McDogface

2 and a half months for an appointment? dafaq?!

@djsmiley2k exactly my thoughts

Dog
9:41 AM
@djsmiley2k a) they suck, b) I suck c) cats suck

Dog
This particular surgery has ridiculously long waiting lists on a good day month.
Didn't help that a combination of my holidays plus my doctors holidays meant not being able to make the first few appointments available

wtf
yey
that just autoscrolled
wait oh now it isn't, wtf

CAAAAAAAAAAAT
I think we've had trains for... 25 years? theindependent.sg/… today we learnt.....

@Dog ah

9:58 AM
ahh, family
"Hey geek, I need you to check up car prices. Sedans, 2.0 liters"

Dog
@JourneymanGeek emergency halt request button only works when the vehicle has already non-emergency halted.... Uhuh

Car prices in singapore are notoriously variable and the brand we currently own dosen't have a price list.
@Dog NO ONE KNEW ABOUT IT SINCE 1985!
@Dog I always thought it was a "talk to the driver/station control" button

So it's not an emergency stop, it's an emergency stay button

Its safety t word however its spelled
this came out cause a LRT train WENT OUT OF CONTROL

Dog
Still, nice to see automated train being used to begin with
And heck, once in 30 years? Chances are a human driver falling asleep would have happened at least once during that time.
@Leathe Hah well put

10:01 AM
@Dog grey yellow/circle and other grey blue/downtown lines are self driven
proposes a heel button
Heel train heel. GOOD TRAIN.

Dog
Wtf weirdo

@Bob ^
@Bob I think I'm good to go, though I might need to break in an hour or so for dinner

10:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek Gerstmann syndrome?

naw
dyslexia

@JourneymanGeek Does that lead to problems knowing left from right?

*knowing left from the other left

@DavidPostill I was born left handed. I was force trained to be right handed
That... messed up some stuff
including possibly worsening my dyslexia

@JourneymanGeek Ah. Me too. I'm now ambidextrous (except for writing - I refused to go along with the arm tied behind the back routine)
Eventually the teachers gave up after many hours of refusing to write right handed.
I can use most tools with either hand for example.

10:25 AM
I solder left handed. I write right handed
but it takes a concious effort to remember the word/side link
so I'll be like GO LEFT... and If I'm not paying attention, I go other left.

Hehe. Reminds me of my driving instuctor:
Intructor: Take the next left.
Me: Right (as in understood, will obey your command)
Instructor: NO. I said LEFT.

I start saying "ACK" after that, to the amusement of the Instructor :)

Bob
@DavidPostill "roger"
I can't tell left from right... in Chinese
English is perfectly fine

@JourneymanGeek If I had to make a choice I would say I'm left for precision things and right for things requiring strength, but it's not a clear choice/decision.

I can't do crap with my left hand other than type on a keyboard.

Instructor: My name is not ROGER
:)

10:33 AM
I think I might've allocated my ability points wrong. :<

Bob
lol

I wonder how certain cultures resolve the left hand/right hand distinction dilemma?
When it is really important to know the difference ...
@Leathe And, yes, it was your post that prompted me ... :)
