@Boris_yo B+W Käsemann polarizer filters are supposed to be the best out there. I wouldn't skimp on filters.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uhm. This sounds like the kind of thing you're meant to research the day before :P
Get directions in two separate steps?
I usually use Here Maps on my phone.

I'd actually give it a trial run before the interview, get a sense of how the trip goes.
That's what I did last time I went through this.

Google Maps is usually accurate but it's not infallible. With the New York City Transit system, it's usually not an issue, but YMMV.

12:11 AM
@Bob I did, and I did, and the route via the nearer station is half an hour sooner

Bob
@bwDraco Eh. <estimated_time> * 1.1 + 15mins
And/or the train/bus one or two before

@Bob I generally give a 30-minute buffer for interviews and a 15-20 minute buffer for normal work days.

One hour 6 min + 20 minutes for walking estimated
Looks like a 5 minute walk to me

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Maybe a really weird path

I'm actually more likely to trust the MTA Trip Planner (for NYC) if I'm going someplace unfamiliar.

Bob
12:14 AM
Where do you think Google gets timetable data from?

@Bob I know but I've used both.

@Bob no streetview for that area either

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ow

Ouch.

Bob
sounds a tad dodgy...

12:17 AM
ooh, no NOW it works

@JourneymanGeek: You should be able to download bus and rapid transit (MRT) maps to your phone.

@Bob naw, sounds about the right area for that kinda company

Here in NYC, we have PDFs of all the maps and timetables on mta.info.

Bob
that was popular about a decade ago
now we get fancy stuff

We have what's called MTA Bus Time. There's an API that apps can use to access this information.
Me? I just text the bus stop code and I get time estimates for the next bus.

Bob
12:24 AM
that was also popular about half a decade ago

I still have a physical copy of the local bus map in my everyday camera bag just in case...
(My camera bag is my everyday bag.)

The last local bus guide we bought was a quarter inch thick. There's a local transit app but it has a terribad ui

No. Two different patterns, two different replacements.

@DavidPostill where do you live?

Semicolon does not work.
@allquixotic, @Bob: Substitutions do not work for messages inside the Bot Overflow room.

I think they're broken everywhere at the moment

Eh. There for the job interview thing. This whole place feels like the old country o0

Also feels like they have the same interior designer as rivercorp.

2:08 AM
uhhhhhhh

Should I consider relocating for a new job (at parents' expense)?
I have very little in the way of savings and will likely end up homeless if this fails.
(My parents likely will only cover the expenses for one way. If I must return because of a negative job outcome, I will probably be on my own, and I cannot expect to have sufficient funds to return home.)

Cart before the horse. Apply for things. Get information. Then decide.

There are too few jobs for entry-level folks like me.
That's why I'm evaluating more options.

That's why networking helps.

2:21 AM
I'll see. I'm mainly a lone wolf which hurts me a lot.
I'll take the risk anyway if there is no other choice.
...okay. Any ideas on how to prepare for homelessness? (This isn't a joke!)

Bob
2:39 AM
Step back, take a breather, and don't go down that path.
@JourneymanGeek Turns out 5 year old Opterons are slow :P

I anticipate being forced onto the streets as a consequence of the job search and worsening relations between me and my parents.

Holy cow I almost KILLED!!! the windows 2003 server trying to turn ipv6 on.
Dude why would you not get a job
You have talent, being here shows that

Has anyone here ever been homeless for any period of time?

I need to jury rig SATA support to this server, the hard drive capacities are too low.

@JourneymanGeek: Is an image with rapidly-flashing content that is likely to cause seizures in some people flaggable?
See here for an example (caution: rapidly flashing red and green)

3:03 AM
I think the whole seizure warning thing is overblown. I have never heard a report from someone who claimed they got a seizure from looking at a GIF.
Yes, it could happen, but like they say in pamphlets, to a very small percentage of people.

@bwDraco that should be a question for a mod there.

It's getting late here.

They've completely ignored processor architecture.
"1.4 GHz 64-bit processor" would match just about any CPU from 2005 onwards...

Yay. No idea what the scope of work is, but nice job title and pay.

@JourneymanGeek Is it something you can safely share? :P with Google/the world as far as this room goes, anyway

@JourneymanGeek That's... an interesting business model :P

5:03 AM
Yup. Which is very old country.
Also if you think about it, people as a service
And since everyone is on contract you can scale quickly

Bob
@Rahul2001 Your challenge. It is broken. Again.
You need to fix your redirects.
If initial login URL ends with a /, e.g. /login.php/, then your first redirect goes to /login.php/blah.php which breaks
your current POST is to blah.php which just replaces the part after the last / in the current URL
if you change it to POST to /blah.php at least it'd go to example.com/blah.php (i.e. from the root)
alternatively, have your scripts redirect to the correct page if there's a trailing slash
alternatively, those should be 404 and you should also fix your intro page
uhhhhhhh
I thought you removed that :P
so... was there supposed to be a step after the impromptu quiz with dodgy answer recognition?

5:36 AM
Man. Swiftkey autocucumbers a lot.
It made awww awkward.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek :(
Are you tapping or swiping?
I turned off autocorrect on tapping.

Tapping

Ah.
Yea it's really focused towards swiping.

Error. SwiftKey not swipe

i had to use kies via wifi before -_-

now I'm confused
you're only comparing SwiftKey to Google Keyboard?
cause I'm using Swype which has nothing to do with those two :P

Yup. Cause this phone came with Swiftkey pre installed

@Rahul2001 You should rather look up absolute and relative URLs
This part isn't really php
Except the weird trailing slash getting accepted

I got another cragslist scammer, same lame ass scam as the last one. very unaware criminal besides as they text me for a local product at 2AM . well i am awake and will be , but that would be very poor form, i can pretty much know they are not even in this country let alone local. Now i am thinking it is time to Play with the fool instead of just telling them to f---off.

@Psycogeek Enjoy :)

it is the money order scam, send $40 over, to reserve it. what can we play?
I assume they send a faux money order, the fool (me) puts it into the bank as deposit, and the stupid bank (them) starts processing it without realising it is just paper.
then the scammer asks for (real) money back.

@Psycogeek Something like that is usually what they try.

9:10 AM
tell them they could send a non-refundable deposit?
say all the money up-front now ?
give them my address (thats dumb) but dont promise anything?
Hmm, what if i tell him that i am a prince , and if he sends me $1500 i will send him my old bently :-)
There must be some way to get real money from them, something really devious.
I have to verify your identity, and your willingness to pay, to do that, you need to send me $1 paypal, which i will return to you as soon as it clears. this will verify the communications network, and address and money exchange capability. then you can send me the money order.

@Psycogeek This might give you some ideas 419eater.com :)

hmm give the local police as the address, and the chief as the name :-)

Weird. There is no question yet about why SSD sectors have a limited number of writes. I thought given the age of this board, at least one person would have wondered that already
I'm asking one right now for those curious
or would that question be off-topic?

@Nzall on-topic, I think

Q: How does memory wear out?

MikeI know that after time due to writing/re-writing memory wears out, and I was reading about a microcontroller from TI which uses "wear leveling" to insure the longest life of some EEPROM that the chip used. I can infer that this will try to write to all of the bits on the chip in some sort of cy...

Q: Why does flash memory have a lifespan?

triplebigI've read that flash memories can "only" be reprogrammed 100000 to 1000000 times, until the memory storage "deteriorates" Why exactly does this happen with flash and not other memory types, and what does "deteriorate" refer to, internally? EDIT: Since it's not only flash that this happens, I'd ...

@Bob ah, okay
I already asked the question. I've deleted it
@Bob actually, those questions are on Electrical Engineering, not on Super User.
so it's still worth asking on here, I think

Bob
Yea I don't think we have one specifically on su

even though the question is already answered on other domains

Bob
9:38 AM
But I'm also not sure if it's all that relevant a question

@Bob let's just let the community decide

Bob
There's a reason it's been asked more on ee :P

Q: Why do SSD sectors have a limited amount of writes?

NzallI often see people mention that SSDs have a limited amount of writes in their sectors before they go bad. I'm curious as to why that is. I'm looking for a technical yet consumer-oriented explanation, i.e. the exact component that fails and why frequent writes affect the quality of that component...

Why does flash have a lifespan? Probably not?
Why can I not write infinite information to my SSD or USB flashdrive? And how do I mitigate that: possibly

Bob
@Nzall you're better off first identifying why the ee answers aren't good enough
Are they really that complex?
And if they're "dumbed down", will they still meaningfully answer the question?
Maybe?
*shrug*

9:42 AM
@Bob I understand them, but I'm not sure whether a question on another exchange is a reason to say "you can't ask that here".

Su seems to be a bit devided on that/
Personally, I would like a good answer here on Su, assuming it is on-topic.

Bob
@Nzall it depends. In this case I'd say the question is rather borderline

Even if that means poking theother user and asking her to cut-paste-edit her/his answer from another side to this site

Bob
I wouldn't vtc, but others might

nods. Why is this. it a bad question on su
How do I deal with this? is not a bad question
Which might require understanding as to why it is.

Bob
9:45 AM
@Hennes I don't entirely agree there either :P

@Hennes me too, All your Computer questions Belong to Us. but if it is already answered (and it is quite sufficiently) on SE, then it still is a "Dupe"

Bob
Some "why" questions are great

@Bob Let's just see what the community thinks about it. I created the question, if it gets closed, so be it

Bob
But it does depend on the amount of depth the answers require

@Bob I see. I'll see if I can edit the question to clarify what I mean

Bob
9:47 AM
@Nzall oh, I think it looks fine from here, but we'll see, as you say

Bob
@Nzall actually, I think a higher level question asking about SSD failure modes might be better than asking about the wearout mechanism specifically, but of course if wear is what you're looking for then that might not be good enough

@Burgi that's a different question that I'm looking for

Bob
(e.g. Lots of ssds die to controller failure - wear is often a red herring)

its incredibly similar
7
Q: What happens when a flash drive wears out?

endolithFlash memory has a limited number of read/write cycles, after which it fails. What happens when it fails? Is it like a hard drive, where a failed write is silently moved to another part of the disk and that sector marked as bad and never used again, without data loss? Are there a limited numbe...

9:51 AM
@Burgi but it doesn't say WHAT causes the wear from what I can tell. the EE questions do explain that though
@Burgi That only explains what happens when they wear out, not how the wearing out works

15
A: Will reading data cause SSD's to wear out?

MSaltersDoesn't affect the device. The limited write lifetime of Flash is a natural consequence of how they work. Data on Flash drives is safe because the bits are stored by electrons locked in a very well isolated layer. These electrons, if present, produce an electric field that can be picked up by a ...

@Burgi Turns out that when you search for "SSD limited writes", you won't get any questions about reading data.

Bob
@Nzall because that kind of answer stretches a bit beyond the scope of su. Which is why I said borderline earlier. It's an interesting enough question, but not strictly on-topic. Not definitely off either, so it might still make it through.

but to me, it looks like the community doesn't find the question a problem. 2 upvotes so far and 2 answers

Bob
Probably most of our HNQs are in this "borderline but interesting" category

9:54 AM
@Bob Yup. Def. interesting.

@Bob And why exactly are "why does X happen" questions on the border?

Bob
Heck, I've probably answered a few myself and I'd probably try here if I were at a computer

The site is about practical answers.
Theoretical questions do not match that
But how do I do this to avoid something else is practical

Bob
@Nzall imo it's more that this ventures beyond computing into ee
Borderline isn't necessarily bad, just depends who sees it. I've already said I'm on the side of keeping most of these :P
@Hennes heh, I've said in the past that I rather like some of the theoretical questions

E.g.
Q: flash has limited writes? How do I avoid this
A: The writes are limited per flash cell -because of $reason-, so use wear leveling. Several filesystem are desgined with this in mind, e.g. FS-1, FS2, FFS-3, ... Do not use FAT since that always writes to the same block for its DIR info. On SSDs this is already mitigated by the controller which does $some_more_explanation

Bob
9:57 AM
Practical devolves into troubleshooting all too often
Theoretical is sometimes a problem because it can be too broad, requiring lengthy explanations of basic concepts just to get to the answer. But sometimes that's very well done

10:18 AM
