3:00 PM
you are becoming forgetful @ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ?

Bob
O_O WTF

@Bob I'm a filesystem snob these days.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ebay.com.au/itm/…

I'll only use ZFS, ReFS, XFS, btrfs, or (begrudgingly!) NTFS

Bob
I... really can't tell if it's a joke or not.

3:01 PM
the first four being awesome in their own ways, and the last being bad but too ubiquitous to ignore

I'm not sure if there's any word in english, tamil snauzer or westie to describe that.

@Bob looks like Tribblephones ;p

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: meh, NTFS isn't too bad

@JourneymanGeek compared to ReFS? yes it is

and you need properly tuned setups for the first two.

3:02 PM
ReFS just needs to gain boot support and it'll be supreme

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ NTFS is necessary

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: not available on desktops for now.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ is just that MS is so braindead to support other filesystems

Ell
Hi all

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ btrfs was ridiculously slow on my OpenSUSE test install. But that was two years ago.

3:03 PM
I'm currently on ext4 and NTFS mostly
I need to rebuild my fileserver soon though
Want to move over a disk

@Bob btrfs has come a long way since then -- Oracle's RHEL build considers it their premiere production filesystem, while Red Hat themselves and CentOS support it fairly well too, just giving XFS a slight edge
at this point, XFS >>>>> ext4 for all tasks -- both in terms of perf and reliability

Ell
I just copied half of a partition to a file using dd. Is there any way to mount this? I know you can mount disk images but I didn't copy the partition table over

can't think of a reason to use ext4

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: they probably DO have a bit of a btrfs bias.
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: meh, it works ;p

@Ell probably no

Bob
3:05 PM
Eh, I'm sticking with NTFS on Windows for obvious reasons.

@Ell: half?

Ell
@JourneymanGeek the other half was empty :P

Bob
And I don't fiddle with filesystems on other OSes anymore. Not since.. well, the last time didn't go particularly well.

@Ell: I'd make a copy and try loopmounting it
heh. I'd like to get a zfs install at some point
but I'd want to do it right

Bob
@Ell You don't need the partition table, but you might be missing some critical FS structures on the other half.

3:06 PM
(so... small SSD cache, lotsa drives, server with a buttload of ram)

Bob
Also, nice timing, considering we were just discussing filesystems :P

Ell
@Bob Ah. I see. it's a hfsplus partition if that helps

my favorite FS right now is ZFS on hardware RAID5 on my new server <3

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I can check the last two. But it's a production server running Windows, so that's really not the place to try out ZFS :P

Ell
@JourneymanGeek I've tried sudo mount -t hfsplus -o loop,ro mac_back.img ./backtest/

3:07 PM
.... HFSplus?

Bob
@Ell ...I know nothing about OSX FSes.

Ell
but it complains about wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock :S

Bob
Nothing at all.

@Bob: yeah, when I eventually retire my current PC, it'll do fine.

@Ell the thing to keep in mind is, all your data (and metadata) isn't going to be all packed in the front of the partition, in terms of its logical blocks

3:08 PM
> Lastpass.com is DOWN for everyone

if you were to map out the logical blocks (the linear addresses by which data is accessed on the filesystem), it would look something like swiss cheese that has been shot repeatedy by a machine gun

Ell
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ The problem is I don't have enough space to copy the full partition :/

Bob
@Braiam As a KeePass user... heh.

@Ell then you're SOL, because copying half the partition is like copying half your DNA -- useless

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: actually... DNA transcription works roughly like that.....
;p

Ell
3:09 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Ah I see :P

@Ell: can you use a 'smarter' imaging option?
something that copies the whole drive, but handles slack space intelligently?

We're working as quickly as possible to resolve connection errors affecting a small percentage of users, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Bob
@Ell dd if=/dev/sdXN | xz >image.xz

<--- small percentage :(

3:10 PM
@Bob: I was about to suggest that... kindasorta.

partclone supports HFS+

Bob
@JourneymanGeek many of those require the original FS to be intact, which may not work too well if this is for recovery purposes

dd is usually a horrible option unless you have special needs
@Bob: true, but for recovery purposes, you better have enough space for a full image

Bob
@JourneymanGeek recovery and forensics. which are quite common, really, especially the first.
@JourneymanGeek if you just want to grab a copy quickly, you might luck out with compression

3:12 PM
partclone is great for sparse copies... my dedi has partclone images from like 2006 from a much older server :P

@Bob: recovery and forensics? Step one. Buy the biggest drive you can. It'll get lonely. Buy it some friends....

step 100: svcadm restart svc:/pkgsrc/nginx:default
whoops... wrong thought thread

Q: Why does Data have to use a computer in Star Trek?

BenjaminJBIn the earlier episodes of The Next Generation is where I noticed it, and I realise he could be inputting commands into the command terminal, but why isn't his positronic brain interfaced with the command console in that case? I can't remember the exact example but there are episodes where he g...

I think that star-fleet programmers have not the slightest idea of network security at all is an in-canon fact. Almost every random species can tap into their computers, every junior lieutenant can alter logs. But the users are worse: Picards code for authorizing auto-destruct is "Picard-4-7-Alpha-Tango". That's 4 characters! That's insane! You cant expect users like that to deal with decent security measures... — Einer yesterday

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ that preview...

Ell
Ahh why does gparted freeze on me

Patience Eli, many a partitions have been lost because of kill.

Ell
hfsplus: write access to a journaled filesystem is not supported, use the force option at your own risk, mounting read-only.
uh oh. I hope gparted didn't force it :S

> Added preference to override reported telephony support to deal with those tablets that don't report correctly (I'm looking at you Samsung...)

Ell
Damn. I think I caused a mismatch between actual partition size and the partition table...

Bob
4:01 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ did your headphones come with the TOSLINK cable?

4:13 PM
@Bob one...
I needed moar to support microphone and my toslink switch :P
base station -> switch
base station -> microphone port on PC (because I don't use a microphone when watching TV)
switch -> SoundBlaster Z
switch -> TV
> TV with microphone lets armchair athlete yell at professional athletes for being bad players

Bob
...either my USB controller or hub just crapped out on me
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

You need to restart your computer before the changes you made to this device will take effect.
the fuck?

my early adopter USB 3 controller on my Z77 motherboard craps out on me sporadically when I plug my early adopter USB 3 hub with 3+ devices plugged into it, into a single USB 3 port on the motherboard

Bob
and it tried to restart without a prompt

that's what I get for buying tech when it's new :(

Bob
who even does that shit anymore
what if I was running some critical op that takes a month to complete? huh?
fucking bullshit

4:20 PM
@Bob Windows does, apparently

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Mine's even newer.
Or is that older?
.

but your P67 has no USB 3.0, right?

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Also, I just logged out of your Hetzner server. Pretty sure I've been logged in there for at least a month.

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Ya, it's a Renesas controller.

4:21 PM
I can tell you don't reboot frequently :D

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ You're one to talk! :P

how many FF tabs are you up to? has it exceeded 64-bit signed int yet?

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ 24 :(

Bob
My last save was 633

4:22 PM
!! s/24/24-bit/

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ only 24-bit?! (source)

Well, I got 12 App Tabs open all the time... And another 8 right now, normail tabs.

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ System Boot Time: 7/07/2014, 6:00:04 PM

with more than 4 tabs, Pale Moon would be running entirely off my SSD on my work laptop. lol

@Bob OK, that's pretty bad -- I reboot my desktop and laptop at least monthly. my server, I let run, but that's because it's a server

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ That was a month :P
A month and a day, to be specific.

aw, hell -_-
I just realized ksplice will never work with SmartOS :P

Bob
Ok, I hope this restart works.
@allq why not?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ ^

because SmartOS is a Solaris kernel and ksplice is for Linux

Bob
4:27 PM
I forgot what it is...

freenode #smartos is a neat place to hang out; there are Joyent employees in there

Bob
Ok, shutdown successful.
I just realised the Seagate external hdd makes noise
(Yea, the desktop's fans are quite loud)
Booting successfully... phew
You can tell just how rare this is by how stressed I am :P

I failed an audit... Trying to downvote a question showing no research effort! #firstworldproblems #sehatesme

@CanadianLuke what was it expecting? upvote/leave it alone?

4:33 PM
STOP! Look and Listen.

This was an audit, designed to see if you were paying attention. You didn't pass. Your review was inappropriate. This was a high quality post and you should have considered leaving it as-is or even upvoting.

Don't worry, we've already handled this post appropriately – but please take a minute to look it over closely, keeping in mind the guidance above.

Bob
...I don't really see a lack of research effort there.

@Bob @JourneymanGeek Is it normal to see severe LTE attenuation when phone is plugged into wall charger? When I unplug it from the charger, without moving it, my bandwidth jumps up and stays at a significantly higher level, suggesting a sudden change in SNR. Plugged in, it's barely usable.

Maybe I'm just in a grumpy mood then... It just doesn't seem like a question for professional or computer enthusiasts to spend time answering.

Positioning and orientation don't seem to make a difference.

@JourneymanGeek Hey, how much does the Singapore Post suck? I have something sitting with them and I hear bad things. :P

4:41 PM
@BenRichards Hey, you troll stranger! What are you doing in here??? I thought we had finally banished you to the cellar basement office?

:(
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ that's not a nice greeting! :P
Also, what happened to your name? :P

@BenRichards oh, I just do that to annoy Boris_yo.

Hehe

"you changed your display name??????? how am I supposed to keep track of you?"

Bob
Cthulhu got to it.

4:42 PM
Aha

So I got a Kreyos Meteor smartwatch. It's sitting in Singapore. I'm curious to see how it will be once it actually arrives.

I heard other peoples' phones' alarms going off about flash flood warning in my immediate area, but I had no idea what was coming to ME... :S
apparently, weather emergency alerts on the Galaxy S5 get piped to the bluetooth headset at full volume

Their mismanagement of the whole project reached epic proportions. It's compared with Pebble's woes during their whole kickstarter campaign.

0 dB, unattenuated, deafeningly loud

4:43 PM
ack

@BenRichards tell me, what use case does one have for a smart watch?
I won't come right out and say "that sounds completely useless"; instead, I'll let you sell me on the concept

notifications at a glance, hands-free. Usually most useful as activewear (like when you're running) and you want to remain connected, and track your time and all that using phone apps. But also useful if you are not in a situation where your hands are often free yet don't want to juggle a phone.
For me though, I just think it's really cool technology and I'm into that :P
Always had a thing for high-tech watches, tbh

I don't run; I walk with coworkers but that's different, I'm not checking my phone at that time

Right
It's not something that everyone would find use for, but enough do that it's a viable market at this point

usually my hands are freer than your typical smartphone user, because all of my headphones are bluetooth, and I make use of Google Now whenever I need to

4:46 PM
Also...
This is just amusing :P

for me, it wouldn't be really neat unless it had a VERY long battery life -- if it were an Android-like thing, fully featured but perhaps cut-down and slower, but with OMG battery life, that would be nice to have

Well Android is coming out with a smartwatch os, forget what it's called. Android Wear or something?

I yearn for the concept of a 1 month screen-on runtime on a device with performance in the range of a 2013 smartphone

Everyone does I think :P

you know... my grandfather once showed me an old flashlight he had with a lead-acid battery, that thing weighed a ton, it was like a brick, and the battery life was not good... I wonder if that's how we'll look back on today's Li-Ion / Li-Po batteries in 2050 or so
this was when a set of Alkaline D batteries were far more weight and space-efficient than what they had available in those so-called "first-gen" flashlights

4:50 PM
Probably

but I think Li-Ion was still new at that time

They're working hard at engineering a better battery. Our battery tech is old and full of toxic materials.

Bob
...that's certainly a new experience.

progress is depressingly slow though -- every week Slashdot has an article about some battery breakthrough that will take at least 25 years to put into mass production

Bob
I can now say I've had to reboot a USB hub

4:51 PM
Yeah
@Bob... wow.

@Bob how'd you manage that?
oh. I end up having to do that to mine all the time

I actually had to reboot my car a couple times when the center console that controlled the radio froze :P
2

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Unplugging/replugging the USB cable didn't work. Nor the power cable.

@BenRichards did you have to turn the engine off and back on? O_o

Bob
Had to actually remove all power sources to the damn thing (both USB and separate power supply at the same time)...

4:52 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Yes. :P
Had to cut power to turn it off

@BenRichards that's awful! -_-

At least it was a quick thing!

they should have a reset switch on it or something -- what if you were on a long road trip and it froze up?

It's not safety equipment. It just stopped responding to inputs, but still worked.

also, putting mechanical strain on your engine (start/stop cycles are the worst thing for internal combustion engines) ... because of software....

4:53 PM
I think it was a bug in the Bluetooth stack

Bob
now I've heard everything.

Yeah but it only happened twice. :P

hehe, my 2012 Civic's bluetooth 2.1 stack is awful, but it's just barely sufficient for music-listening

Bob
Bluetooth bug => car needs to be restarted

Hehe

4:53 PM
hey, look on the bright side

My Bluetooth stack does have issues in my car. It cuts out now and then and occasionally fails to pair with my phone automatically

in the future when electric cars are widely available, a whole-car restart doesn't make your engine crank

But it's good enough that it doesn't give me too many issues.

Bob
Apparently this USB 3.0 hub can't cope with medium amounts of data

just stops draining the battery, then starts again
@BenRichards mine is the same, minus pairing issues

Bob
4:54 PM
trying to transfer from one HDD to another connected to the same hub... and it says !!no

the dropouts are very annoying though

Yeah

I ... sing (>_>) along... and having the thing drop out while I'm singing throws off my rhythm :P

I would love for firmware updates to be a thing on cars.
As part of the regular car maintenance schedule

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Oh yea, the TOSLINK thing earlier... I was considering buying a cable :P

4:55 PM
You are on the highway doing 100kmph.
Your radio freezes.

Do you reboot ?

Bob
But if they tend to come with one, then there's no point.

@Hennes It's only happened about 1 minute after leaving the house and still on back roads :P

Bob
@BenRichards that sounds like a terrible idea

song: "ti vogl---- .... io *bene* assai..."
me: "ti voglio --- AH GOD DAMNIT"

Bob
> Your car is now bricked. Have a nice day!

4:56 PM
@Bob Firmware updates? No, awesome idea.
@Bob It's like any other maintenance. If they screw it up, they gotta fix it! It's not like a phone which is a black box after assembled.
Or a router.

@BenRichards I agree, great idea
however, good luck convincing manufacturers to do that without charging you $250 per upgrade
dealerships love to charge you for any reason they can come up with

Bob
@BenRichards And where does that leave people who are generally capable of maintaining their cars by themselves?

"requires IT guy to stick cable in for 5 minutes" qualifies as a billable activity
$75 for labor, $150 for "parts" (electrons -- they're expensive, you know?)

Bob
uhhh

@Bob You can still maintain the rest of your car. It hasn't stopped us since cars have become more than a fuel line, gearbox, and so forth.

4:58 PM
@Bob what?

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ spam email

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ my dealership is actually pretty awesome. Anomaly, I know, but I go to them for everything. The entire experience, from purchase to maintenance, has been a breeze.

Bob
they use interesting tactics to try to bypass the filters. and fail quite badly.

If you're ever buying cars near Leominster, MA, go to these guys: rte2hyundai.com

@BenRichards my dealership is "awesome" in the service aspect too, but they still charge an arm and a leg for it :P
satisfied? yes. expensive? hell yes.

5:00 PM

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ My dealership will go out of their way to give me discounts and rebates :P

I need to do that once myself.

well, this torrential downpour outside (remember earlier my mention of the flash flood warning?) is doing just great for my download on my phone...

robocopy /mir /secfix /timfix /dcopy:t /copyall /tee /log+:D:\Backup\Transcend\mirror.log /ndl /z K: L:

@Bob Got a question about that command?

Bob
@CanadianLuke nup, just putting it here so I can refer back later if necessary

There, now you can remember it later :P

Bob
@CanadianLuke feel free to make suggestions, though

I'm just wondering why you're mirroring the contents, but not updating the update time, and manually copying all the other details... PERSONALLY, I would just do a robocopy k: l: /s /eta /xj /r:0 /w:0 /tee /log:D:\backup\transcend\mirror.log
I do the /eta cause I'm extremely impatient

Bob
6:25 PM
@CanadianLuke What was that about the update time?
I'm specifying /copyall because I want a full clone of this drive.
I'd use dd, but they're different sizes.

/dcopy:t. Does that not ignore updating the time on the file?

Bob
@CanadianLuke it copies the folder timestamps

Oh, nevermind!

Bob
basically, I'm trying to preserve as much information as possible
desired end result is the destination being indistinguishable from the source, aside from the different size

What about using something like Acronis? Or that other one I suggested a couple years ago that I'd have to go back to find the name of?

Bob
6:27 PM
I also already did a manual copy earlier, so this is mostly to check everything turned out right
@CanadianLuke I don't think True Image lets me clone drives directly?

Yup, it will
And restore to different-sized drives as well

Ell
Hi again people

Bob
@CanadianLuke I don't want to backup/restore.

Sup @Ell?

Bob
This is a direct copy of the current data.

Ell
6:28 PM
@CanadianLuke I'm having fun with other peoples hard disks and repartitioning and moving and doing all sorts of risky operations!

But it still lets you create an image of a drive (compressed), and you can browse it (mounting the image), or you can close directly to another drive

Bob
@CanadianLuke But that's not my goal.

Bob
It's a very roundabout way of achieving my goal.
I can backup and then restore.

Then I may be misunderstanding your end-goal

Bob
6:29 PM
But why would I add those extra steps?
4 mins ago, by Bob
I'm specifying /copyall because I want a full clone of this drive.

I found it's MUCH faster with Acronis

Bob
Looks like True Image does have a clone option. But it's a bit late for that now.

OK, no problem

Bob
Also, that deals with the partition - which I don't want to touch at the moment.
Hm. It greys out my desired destination drive anyway :\

Got free space?

Bob
6:33 PM
@CanadianLuke Well, it's a drive/partition-level clone...
Yea, I'll just let robocopy run :P
Thanks for the suggestion though

No problem. I tried :P

Bob
I'd normally just copy through Explorer and be done with it.
But the USB hub is acting up, so it's aborted a few times
now I need to make sure nothing was missed :P
should've done this in the first place

Ell
why is creating an ext4 partition taking so long

@Ell Is the HDD physically OK?

Ell
@CanadianLuke I hope so :P
Ah it's done
ah no it's not
gosh gparted really hates me today

Bob
6:51 PM
robocopy /mir /secfix /timfix /dcopy:t /copyall /tee /log+:D:\Backup\Transcend\mirror.log /ndl /z /r:10 /w:5 K: L:

Ell
it's scanning devices forever it seems

@Bob Why do you set the retry and wait flags to any value other than zero? It just makes it take so much longer

Bob
7:12 PM
38 mins ago, by Bob
But the USB hub is acting up, so it's aborted a few times
the hub will sporadically disconnect, and the reconnect can take 15+ secs
I'm hoping 50 secs is enough to survive through that
there's a reason retry exists, you know

7:34 PM
bloody hell

@Bob Ahhh

so turns out the error code was c000021a
which isn't good.
need to figure out a way into safe mode seems like it might be possible.
to solve

Bob
@Ramhound any chance you can give us the minidump?
I'll be back when I wake up

8:05 PM
@Bob Huh. Reading up on Broadwell. If the "Core M" Broadwell procs land in fanless Surface Pros, I may have to buy an SP4 O_O
especially if they ship Iris Pro

8:18 PM
I hate how Minesweeper on Windows 7 is taking up almost 50 MB of RAM!

@Bob - I am not even sure its being created to be honest. I suppose I could try a Ubuntu Live installation to try and find out. The problem is the BSOD says its going to restart my computer but never does but does get to 100% complete progress but I am pretty sure I configured windows not to automatically reboot ( hence the reason it doesn't )
@going to gym myself though

8:38 PM
@CanadianLuke That's hilarious.
Obviously the situation... not the domestic abuse. :x

@MichaelFrank Just had to add that disclaimer, eh?

@CanadianLuke yezzur.

:P At least you don't beat women, that's a plus that should be advertised lol

omg, they are closing roads all over my area, apparently hundreds of people are getting stuck on the roads because of fast moving water.... the whole area is just one big flood

8:43 PM
What's with the extra ??

you're just doing it wrong :)
@MichaelFrank there isn't an extra
1 min ago, by Michael Frank
see?

oh.
Yes.

it replaced "see" with "smell" and left the ? on

Why did it not replace "ever" with "anyway" then?

8:55 PM
@BenRichards they are usually quite efficent

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ You get emergency weather warnings sent directly to your phone? Is this a country wide thing? o.O

9:31 PM
@MichaelFrank - they passed a law
;-0

Is there a minimum level of cellphone 'smartness' that is required? How would a Nokia 3315 receive the warning?

@JourneymanGeek Perhaps it's a different story when shipping overseas. AFAICT people out there and in Hong Kong got their shipments quickly.
@MichaelFrank Cell phones and cellphone services have an emergency notification feature, just like the emergency broadcast system you see tested on TV and the radio. It's not that new but I don't think it was really used heavily until the past several years.

@MichaelFrank An Obama Phone supports it
@BenRichards Its not new but there was a law that made it required for phones to support it
Verizon and AT&T didn't pay enough that year ;-)
