someone do the math

I make $(base 8) 145,440/yr

I try not to look at my paycheck ammount. It'd make me depressed. And I can't afford therapy.

@CanadianLuke much more

Just recompiled mono
Unfortunately, I am still getting that error

6:02 PM
Ahhh, OK. I thought you made more... Sorry, I don't try rubbing it in :(

Was it you doing python last time?
Was it Jason then?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ which part of US are you from?

Mmhmm.

@ThatBrazilianGuy the part of the paycheck that makes me most depressed is how much the government takes

@Kate, are you on mobile?

6:05 PM
@jokerdino nope

O_O

?

You respond to that guy when I asked you?
/me bolts out of the room.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ OK, I just worked it out your salary... And I feel like a dick now. I hope you can forgive me

umm

A: Proper reaction to disputed/declined flags

Will Okay, somebody didn't like that (OMG Y U NO LEAVE COMMENT DOWNVOTER), so how about this option?

@Kate ok
you respond quite similarly to JMG. Never using specific message replies but going with the @username mentions.

@jokerdino will you forgive me :( it's been a long day

I forgive you.

@jokerdino thank you

welkommen.

6:10 PM
@jokerdino my only excuse is that I'm all for keyboard shortcuts and avoid using the mouse as much as possible

there's an extension to do specific replies I think.

@jokerdino thanks

@Kate well, I don't generally care. I was just making an observation.
@jokerdino test

@Kate I'd happily have the govmt take 50% of my paycheck, if it was reverted in tax being actually applyed into free services for us.
But government is known for reverting taxes to their own pockets

@ThatBrazilianGuy exactly!

6:14 PM
We had the World Cup earlier this month. There's stuff scheduled for it, being built and delivered after the World Cup ended. And stuff cancelled (after millions have been spent, obviously).

@ThatBrazilianGuy I live in the countryside, close to a mushroom farm, which just got a grant for a couple million dollars to have it enclosed. This mushroom farm is a money making local pest which can definately afford it on it's own. Meanwhile, I can't get the municipality to change a light bulb on ONE street light to a directional one.

We0
Hey guys
not sure if correct place

@Kate How about knowing that the lawyers charging hundreds of thousands per day to represent representatives on the tax payer's dime?

We0
I need my www.mydomain.com
to go to mydomain.com
with nginx
or rather
when I go to the www one

Use a CNAME record on your DNS server

We0
6:17 PM
it resolves to the correct IP
ok
how?

CNAME www to mydomain.com
A to IPAddress
The instructions will vary depending on who handles your DNS entries

We0
my www points to mydomain.com

if you really want to do it in nginx you may be able to use the rewriterule

We0
it resolves to the correct IP
I jsut get the standard
nginx page
not my website

but you need to have the mod_rewrite.c installed and you will have to restart nginx

We0
6:20 PM
I can do that
amazon instance
ec2

@Kate east coast

@We0 I haven't used RewriteRule befoe so it's a guess

@We0 Once you get that in, you need to add it to your nginx config, as Kate mentioned
Now would be a good time to use Google though

We0
Thanks
it is weird though

If you are running specialized applications that require the ABSOLUTE URL to include or not include www, then you need to make sure you point it to the right name

We0
6:22 PM
first time having this problem

http://nginx.org/en/docs/http/converting_rewrite_rules.html
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !example.com
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !www.example.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com$1

But you're not the first

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ so you get all the nice storms

@Kate I actually like the weather here. mostly.
not a fan of lightning while I'm sleeping in my bed in the corner of the house on the top story

okay... so who here knows PHP, because I'm getting really fed up

6:24 PM
@Kate I know enough PHP to know to say that when someone asks me if I know PHP, I say "nope, never heard of it"

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ thunder storms are awesome, we get some nice ones up north

We0
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ +1

well, I'm trying to do something unorthodox...
I'm trying to figure out how to "reply" with a file :S

We0
reply with a file? Please elaborate?
add to htaccess
no luck

I have to send a file between two servers and I can only do it with PHP... the file in question is a backup file which I will be asking for on a daily basis... on the requesting server the call will be initiated through a daily cron job... on responding server, lets say www.somesite.com/get_file.php, I would ideally like to generate the file (not a problem) and send it back
I've considered using cURL, but can't figure out how to get that setup

6:29 PM
fopen()

it's a fairly large gzipped file, does that make a difference?

... I'd find another way if it's a large file. You could crash your HTTP server if it's too large, or you could just get no reply from the source server
If you post the file to a place that's readable via the web, remember other people can also download it

We0
Agreedd
I did a similar
service

If you're concerned about that, I'd setup the servers to connect via SSH with keys, and use SCP or rsync

We0
we used xml files (not my spec)
to drop on a server so another machine pics it up
ftp

6:31 PM
it's generated to a directory that is not accessible via the web but the Apache user can create/read it
I wish I had that option :(
I'm limited to PHP

We0
Ok

@Kate break into the shell from php and write a bash or ruby script. that's what I'd do. ;p

We0
well fopen

even the requesting server is accessible to localhost only

We0
but You could crash your HTTP server if it's too large
still remains
http is a bad protocol for copy files
unless you have a good nginx setup

6:33 PM
I know (crying)

@We0 ? no it isn't...
you know, the web server can buffer the file little bits at a time

We0
yes

allocate (say) an 8 MB buffer in the web server's VAS, and read 8 MB at a time and flush it to the network before reading the next 8 MB
no OOM worries

We0
but not if I am calling /getFile.php

okay, but what I can't wrap my head around is how do I send it back on the same request?

We0
6:34 PM
if you use nginx for example

then your PHP can buffer it

We0
which a lot of people do for serving images

chunked encoding

We0
And ifthe connection drops for a few secs?
Admittedly haven't tried t

@Kate no idea about PHP, but the concept is: they call HTTP GET /url; you return an HTTP response. your response can have a response body and content-type, etc

6:36 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ yes! response headers!
these are very, very low usage apache web servers. For busy sites I use nginx.

@Kate Captain... there is no neutral zone.
sorry, your reply made me think of the last episode of TNG

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ :D never apologize for a Star Trek reference

@Kate do you have irumodic syndrome?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I am still getting that error, even after recompiling mono :(

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ ummm, sometimes it feels like it

6:41 PM
@JordanRichards like I tell my coworker who pulls the same thing on me ("I tried it and it still doesn't work :(") -- what you are telling me is not actionable; you need to convert your non-actionable information into actionable information

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ my doc says it's anemia though

pick a hypothesis; go on that hypothesis; attempt to find out if it's true; if true, act on it
my hypothesis would be: it's looking for System.Data.Sqlite.dll in the wrong place

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ It says that the DLL is not found still, I have no idea why, doesn't make sense

how to test: strace -eopen /usr/bin/mono-sgen Whatever.exe 2&>1 | grep 'No such' | grep -i dll
you have to learn to deep dive
oh, you'll probably get an error for not specifying the absolute path of mono-sgen
there, fixed
may have to change No such to ENOENT, can't remember, just air scripting atm

crumbs, it won't let me type pipes
it just shows up as a <

6:45 PM
you probably have a mismatched ' somewhere
hit ctrl+c a few times
are you typing this into RDP or putty?

keymap issue then
are you using a standard US keyboard? or?

Well, I'm from the UK, I think US uses the same

nah, it's different AFAIR
you can run it from putty anyway as long as you have DISPLAY exported correctly
shouldn't make a difference

oh ok
hmm, it didn't do anything
$DISPLAY is set to :12

6:51 PM
"didn't do anything" -- I bet it did, the grep is just too strict
7 mins ago, by ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ
may have to change No such to ENOENT, can't remember, just air scripting atm

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Yeah, it just doesn't give me anything to work with

@JordanRichards no output at all?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ there's a gap in time, then after around 8 seconds, it just goes back for me to enter another command. No output. (I have my RDP open in the background too)

@JordanRichards strace -eopen -Ff /usr/bin/mono-sgen Whatever.exe 2>&1 | gzip > blah.gz
then host that blah.gz in /var/www and give me the URL :P
if you don't have a webserver installed, install one... e.g. yum install lighttpd
make sure you're replacing Whatever.exe with the actual executable

6:59 PM
404

got
> Unhandled Exception: System.TypeInitializationException: An exception was thrown by the type initializer for System.Windows.Forms.XplatUI ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Could not open display (X-Server required. Check you DISPLAY environment variable)
echo $DISPLAY

ps -ef | grep -E ' :[0-9]'

7:02 PM
o_O
did you manage to successfully login as a user, or is it logged in as root to RDP?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ root

ok. in the terminal over on the RDP side, run xhost +

Basically, the exe runs fine in rdp at first, but once the sqlite.dll is needed in a crucial part of the app, it breaks with the error about the dll

and give me the output

ok
"access control disabled, clients can connect from any host"

7:04 PM
good
ok, to get around your pipe character problem
on the putty side: echo 'strace -eopen -Ff /usr/bin/mono-sgen Whatever.exe 2>&1 | gzip > blah.gz' > doit.sh; chmod +x doit.sh
on the RDP side, in the RDP terminal: ./doit.sh in the same directory as you are in on the putty side
then host the file again by overwriting the old copy
if the program starts up but doesn't crash immediately, trigger the SQLite crash while it's running
the log will be stored in blah.gz (as gzipped text)
you can of course examine the log yourself using zless blah.gz

uh, I cannot find doit.sh, it didn't save for some reason

you need to be in the same directory on both consoles
pwd and verify

Yes, but just looking in ftp I cannot see the sh there at all
/var/modbot

did you get any error when inserting the command?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ no error, no output

7:11 PM
ooh I have an idea :D

we can both see your terminal interactively :D
you have a Google account of some form, right?

go to tiyukquellmalz.org/gateone and log in -- all I get is your email address -- then click on the big terminal button, and when prompted, put in a URL like this: ssh://your-server.com:22
enter your login info and let me know. I won't steal it, I promise, it doesn't log the data
it's an open source web SSH terminal thingy I have on my server
(tiyukquellmalz.org is my box)
once you are logged in you can share the terminal by clicking on terminal settings on the right-hand side of the screen
you should see my email in the list of users to share it to
don't share it to everyone or even to "Authenticated Users", just to my email: smcnam at gmail dot com
you can make up a password too
it should give you a broadcast url to give to me
you can email me the password if you make one

How do I share?

7:17 PM
click Terminal Application Panel on the right hand side
then click Terminal Sharing
then check Read and Write for my email address, type in a password, click Generate New Share ID
ok, I see your share, I just don't see the password

7:47 PM
that's gonna take like 20 minutes @ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ :L

it's ok dude
wheeee :3
it'll take 1/3 of the time because I did a parallel make

:3 sweet
:( got a terrible toothache

ouch
@Bob new AWESOME use case for Gate One: remote troubleshooting

I'll brb
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ yes, that is pure awesomeness
I have to say though I did indulge in the floccinaucinihilipilification a little though.

what's that?!

7:57 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I never thought I'd have the honor of telling you this, but YOU my friend, SHOULD GOOGLE BEFORE ASKING.

wow I just looked that word up
o___O
I had no idea that was a real word, I thought you were just pushing keys

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ So you were actually indulging in floccinaucinihilipilification yourself?
How dare you.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ why do you ask?

@JordanRichards now I am going to need to learn to spell that correctly -_-

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I can actually pronounce that word :3

7:59 PM
@Kate irumodic syndrome == fake disease they made up to explain Captain Picard's odd behavior in the last episode of TNG :P
@JordanRichards but did you get over it once you saw how :Onumbingly awesome it is?
you get a mind == blown moment.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I did.
"Kids, never give strange lurking pro superusers access to your terminal randomly"
2

yup, looked it up. I thought I knew Star Trek :(.
I guess the php question made you think of that disease

"Ok mom" hands over terminal

@Kate it was the specific way you stated some remark
"yes! response headers!"
"yes! the klingons!"

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ ahh, phew

8:01 PM
Other than not supporting 4G or LTE, any reason this would be a bad deal?

@JordanRichards lol.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ sorry, had to clarify
and after a looong day, the solution turned out to be a measly four lines
header("Content-Type: application/gzip");
header("Content-Length: ".filesize($file));
$fp = fopen($file,'rb');
fpassthru($fp);
so @CanadianLuke fopen it was

Yea
I can't remember the syntax though
Why are you limited to only PHP, and not any other methods? Does the person in charge want that gzip file available to anyone on the Internet?

I was just stuck on the header and fpassthru
@CanadianLuke no, NOBODY on the internet

Then serving the data up via the Internet is f*cking retarded
Yes, I know there are precautions, but nothing is perfect

8:05 PM
@CanadianLuke EXACTLY!!

Tell them another Canadian believes they are incorrect... And that he understands FOIPOP as well :P

and I'm not going to argue, I just want it done and off my plate
oh sh... I had an appointment at 4
ahhh

Better hurry off then!

8:32 PM
@CanadianLuke OMNOMNOM YOU'RE A GRAPEFRUIT

Dodgeball actually. Found it in the field when doing supervision at one of the schools back in May

Ahh yes, of course
Wow.. So I got Brave Frontier on my Nexus 5 lastnight... Mobile gaming has sure come a long way!

9:00 PM
@MichaelFrank it's gone precisely nowhere until we have Hearthstone on Android

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ indeed.
although I haven't played in a while :/

@MichaelFrank too busy with Dawngate? :D

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Pretty much. Although my recent lack of decent luck rolls is getting me down

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ is this on parallel processing?

@JordanRichards is what? I'm not doing anything right now; I'm trying to figure out which repo to enable

9:15 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I was talking about when you were making
