2:00 PM
So I need to recompile mono?

@Bob he shouldn't have to download anything; the sqlite System.Data provider is built into mono, but it won't compile if it doesn't find sqlite on the system

(I just installed that package)

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Eh shrug

@JordanRichards yes
Qt does it "right" -- they bundle sqlite3 with Qt (making the download bigger but more fool-proof)

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ recompiling is just running the ./configure, Etc again right?

2:01 PM
mono lets you install Qt yourself. and it gets dynamically loaded at runtime by resolving with the library search patch
@JordanRichards of course. but you have to start with configure, because that's the part that determines whether to compile sqlite or not

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ right
Hopefully this should work XD
I cannot believe how long I have been trying to run this bot on my vps for
is this normal for a superuser supernewb?

lol
A lot of us take ages beating things into working

@JordanRichards well, considering I spent about a week trying to get my system bootstrapped when I compiled Gentoo from Stage 0 when I was a noob...
I spent like 24h building Mozilla suite (this was when they still preferred Mozilla Suite over Firefox, since Firefox was in beta or something) and then realized I had to change a configure flag and make world again....
this was back when I/O, memory, the scheduler, the CPU, etc. were much slower
nowadays you can compile Xorg, the kernel, and firefox (all together) in under an hour
tempted to rent one of AWS's high IOPS SSD systems with like 4 Xeon CPUs and see how long it takes to make world on gentoo with -j30 :D

@JordanRichards no; it's not normal for supernewbs to use superancient versions of OSes with gimped functionality and outdated versions

2:11 PM
lol
certainly not for production or learning.

at this point, the only reason to run CentOS 5 or older is that "the system has been set up for high availability production use on CentOS 5 in the past, and the cost to upgrade it would be too high in money or man-hours for us right now"
this is a new VPS. the logic for using AncientOS escapes me

especially where even the latest version of centos has fairly stable, well tested software
(ie, not bleeding edge, but should work mostly predictably)

@JourneymanGeek CentOS 6 is showing its age, but it would even be preferable to 5 in this case... although 7 would be ideal for obvious reasons

personally if it were me, I would use OpenSUSE -- reason being, they tend to have extremely up to date versions of stuff like Mono

2:15 PM
(and heh, I need to get a VM with that up)

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I think I still have it installed on my netbook. It's a bitch to upgrade, though.
Broke pretty badly on 12.2 => 12.3
Then again, every *nix system I try to upgrade breaks...

!! s/.nix//

@Bob: I tend to just wipe and rebuild

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Then again, every system I try to upgrade breaks... (source)

Bob
2:20 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Good point :P

One of my setup's survived... 4 server moves
moving to @ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ's server would be 5

Bob
I htink my phone upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS is the most successful so far, actually.
Followed by the Win8 => Win8.1, after a lot of pain.

lol
things usually work smoothly for me.

Bob
The attempts at upgrading Ubuntu... ended up in restore-from-backup.
Upgrading OpenSUSE broke booting pretty badly.

man. I used suse 10.1 I think
it had a broken package manager

Bob
2:21 PM
Thankfully Debian has a long release cycle, so I haven't had the pleasure of upgrading that yet.

I run ubuntu mostly ;p

Bob
Incidentally, apparently apt-get autoremove doesn't remove dependencies installed from metapackages. Which is just bullshit.

@Bob Wheezy -> Squeeze worked well on my Hetzner dedi

I'll likely run smartos on @ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ's box ;p

as did Squeeze -> testing for some of the VMs

Bob
2:22 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Heh. I'm running testing in all the VMs

does eventually intend to run most stuff from home though

Bob
That reminds me, I really need to do a kernel upgrade sometime.

@JourneymanGeek that'll be fun :D (I'd be fine setting up a little KVM Linux instance, but then you wouldn't be able to learn SmartOS)

Bob
(VServer)

lol. I like a challenge

2:23 PM
it's not that challenging if the main stuff you need is, like, php, webserver, /snore...

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: hopefully if things pan out, I'll just get a gigabit internet connection with a static IP address, and shove everything there

you start talking about mono and ffmpeg and pulseaudio and Xorg and proprietary binaries like teamspeak, and wine, then you have problems

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: its the initial learning curve thats the pain

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ raises hand

@JourneymanGeek wut? a gigabit internet connection with a static IP at home?

2:24 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: yeah

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Singapore.
And Europe.
And... yea.

I'm jealous

Bob
^

50-60 dollars a month and a one off payment for the static IP
lol

once again, I might be moving into your doghouse

2:25 PM
;p

make room around the food bowl

(eh, I really need to find time to get a new dog bed)

@Bob but remember I did get ffmpeg performing admirably after fixing some retarded compiler optimization settings? :P
I had to tell libvpx "don't worry, this is Linux... trust me... /snirk"

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: I'd probably need to wait till I get a place of my own. Parent's wouldn't agree to a home rack ;p

libvpx: "HUH? NO LINUX? O OK. -O0 FOR YOU."

2:26 PM
(though I suppose a NUC or a PC would do fine)

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ -O-1

like those horribly broken websites that render like crap if your user agent isn't IE 6

Bob
My main hosting problem now is finding a nice low-latency server.

@Bob: ....

Bob
2:27 PM
The only ones with even vaguely affordable prices are VPSes, and not excellent ones either.

(latency on fibre is insanely low. the other ISP has lower latency connections for 10 quid more)

Bob
> $4/year for a 128MB OpenVZ in Buffalo and Dallas
This kind of shit...

> astronaut wants to play Terraria in space
> develops FTL communication
> Australia gives him a medal

@Bob: eh, those VPSes are more in the.. insanely cheap range

2:29 PM
okay.png

basically, living in Nowhere, Earth, latency is always going to be a problem, unless you're willing to pay $1000/month to have a server like the one OVH offers me, or even Hetzner

what is that?

@BigHomie what is what? it's a listener on the chat bot

I think @BigHomie hasn't been introduced to the chat bot yet ;p

2:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek don't think so lol

!! tell BigHomi hello

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I'm just mentioning there's so many of them in the US and Europe.

(we have a chat bot. it does things)

@BigHomi Howdy.

!! commands

2:31 PM
@Bob: you probably don't really have the infrastructure

@ChatBotJohnCavil how's it going

@HackToHell That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I'd like anything <100ms RTT, really. Which is perfectly possible on the same continent, but there's the problem.

also, if you say stop!

HAMMERTIME!

cool stop !

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ya. And the gov doesn't seem too interested in developing it, either.
@JourneymanGeek Stahp!

HAMMAHTIME!

yay, chat spam because someone is discovering the bot for the first time... I always like me some spam

Bob

@Bob: ours is. ;p

man. weird random 0 dB noise spike in my bluetooth audio stream. unexpected, loud, and hasn't happened before

2:34 PM
@HackToHell Chuck Norris does not follow fashion trends, they follow him. But then he turns around and kicks their ass. Nobody follows Chuck Norris.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, that's a good thing :P

android 4.4.x and its bluetooth.... sigh

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Apparently bluetooth got shittier
Bluetooth doesn't work on my phone post JellyBean :(

@Bob: problem is when they loose interest
also, they build a lot of supervillan buildings.

@HackToHell MUCH. two phones now. both have awful bluetooth that drops out

2:36 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ People were raging about it in xda

Bob
Oh look Singapore unbranded (XSP) got the i9505 4.4 update.

@Bob how about the i900V 5.0 upgrade? I'm betting Q3 2015 -_-

Bob
And Philippines. And Malaysia.

V = Verizon
V is also for "very slow"

Bob
2:37 PM
This is actually the second Singapore (XSP) 4.4 update.
Still none for XSA :\

@Bob they probably have one person working on the firmware somewhere in the Outback who is tasked with porting all the language to Australian English by adding ", mate!" at the end of sentences in dialog boxes
Fortunately, Beats Audio has stopped, mate!

Bob
I'm pretty damn sure Australia is the only country in the world that doesn't have it yet. New Zealand does.

@Bob I'd actually want a Jellybean downgrade at this point. that's how bad KK is.
if I had a choice (which I don't), I'd stay on JB until Android "L" is out, then upgrade to that.

Bob
There's even a "South East Europe" unbranded.
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Issues apart from BT?
I don't use BT much.

@Bob battery consumption, for one.

Bob
2:40 PM
?

much better on JB for devices that have had a post-release update from JB to KK
like my Droid Maxx
KK reduced battery life by about 30%

>_>
I haven't had issues.
they even sort of fixed the external storage bug (by removing the notifications for unsafe removal)

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Maybe just M/Loto?

@Bob could be.

or the verizon models.

2:42 PM
although the Galaxy S5 is a pretty crap device too, except for the better web rendering / graphics / WiFi / LTE performance

Bob
I'm considering either one of the two on the right here
Apparently they don't care what you host on them (legal, of course)

bad bluetooth, bad battery life, and phone is extremely fragile without a hard case on it

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Try the OnePlus? :P

eh, why do VPS hosts hate IRC?

@Bob try Not Available On Verizon

Bob
2:43 PM
Apparently it gets great battery life due to heavy underclocking.

@JourneymanGeek superstition

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ That might not be a problem soon...

like.. why my ISP blocks port 80?

RansomIT? sounds legit...
"to recover your terraria data you must pay $300 or we will delete it in 48 hours"

Bob
Heh.

2:44 PM
or the owner's name is Ransom? ;p

lol, the model numbers are funny too
most of them end in "BADL"
BAD Lowendbox

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ ADL => Adelaide

> TOR exit nodes, game servers, hosting pornographic material, spamming, hosting copyrighted content or doing anything that infringes Australian law is not OK.
game servers

Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I have an email from them that says otherwise :P

also, if you made a Tor exit node that doesn't have anything to do with Toronto (TOR), it might technically be allowed
TOR != Tor... they probably mean Tor, but they said TOR

Bob
2:49 PM
> Your ToS states:

\> Game servers are not permitted on services in Adelaide.

Does that mean game servers are allowed on Sydney VPSes?
Answer: > Yes

lol. weird.
apparently CPUs in Sydney suffer from less contention than CPUs in Adelaide
must be one of those gravitational/magnetic effects, like water going down the drain the opposite way

Bob
shrug

oh. last night I was futzing around in KSP some more. nothing too exciting, just rescued a kerbal from LKO (how the fuck did he get up there?! I didn't put him there! smh), tested some parts, and did science around the moon

Bob
> 901 days, 901 consecutive
:D

unlocked about 900 science worth of parts... now I'm going to stop using my over-unity ion engine and use nuclear engines instead... they use liquid fuel (because the resource for uranium or whatever hasn't been invented yet), but my modded capsule regenerates liquid fuel like 5/sec... enough that if I run out, I can sit around and regen it :P
trying to figure out how many nuclear engines are required to escape the gravity well of most planets except Jool (not even trying to get off of Jool without my over-unity)
then I have contracts to explore Duna, Ike and Minmus
Duna always reminds me of that guy:

ShutupsquareI was listening to Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger" and writing some documentation in Vim and noticed that the cursor not flashing to the beat started to annoy me. Can this be fixed? I'm using Terminator and bash.

@Bob makes it so folks whose kit doesn't check the CRLs will get the big red warning in 3 mo if someone steals their private key :)
aside from sysadmin effort, much shorter duration cert issuances is a great idea
they probably have it automated, tho

3:54 PM
Has this been posted yet?

4:06 PM
@tombull89 posted where? in chat? slashdot? cnn.com?

4:40 PM
@Bob heh -- our local state commuter rail redefined "late", too... at least until they replaced their diesel locomotives manufactured in the 60s-70s with locomotives manufactured in 2000; equipment failures dropped off the charts and on-time soared...
now they're trying hard to replace old coaches that have tendencies to have mechanical problems, while also expanding capacity
they're semi-succeeding overall, with limited but decent funds... more funds under our Democratic governor than a Republican, at least
our Republicans act like your PM, while our Democrats act just slightly less poorly ;p

5:32 PM
it's being stuck day :(

@Kate agreed

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ heh, at least it's good to know I'm not alone, what are you stuck with/on or in?

scratch that. it's not being stuck day. I've gotten plenty done and it's only early afternoon. it's coworkers buzzing around like flies needing help day
I can't ever get any of my work done until my coworkers leave because I'm the go-to guy for EVERYTHING

ouch!!

it drives me crazy because I'm an introvert and I like listening to music uninterrupted and people make me take my headphones off like every 3 seconds to help them
I'm so sick of it! /rant

5:35 PM
I wear earplugs and earphones!!!

and people wonder why I end up working like 4 hours of undocumented overtime per day
the best thing a coworker can say to me is "See you tomorrow"
me: YESSSSSSSSSS! now GTFO already

eich, you have to do timesheets?

@Kate er, yes
never worked at a place that doesn't have timesheets

those are such a waste of time, I soooo happy I don't have to do them in this job

not just timesheets, but weekly status reports that nobody reads
and I have to compile the entire group's status reports into one big document, and nobody follows the document standards

5:36 PM
oh man, that's brutal
do you get people to write their own reports so you can incorporate them into yours?
I guess you do... thus "nobody follows the standards"

so I have to transform "Verified and closed 18(two Low, 15 High, one medium) priority defects in ALM11. The high priority defect is:" to "Retested and closed 18 (15 High, one Medium, two Low priority) defects in ALM. The High priority defects are:" times 1000, every week
I tried chasing after people getting them to fix their shit for months
then I tried directly editing their individual status reports (without notifying them or track changes) including prior week status reports, in the hopes that they would just copy and paste
they deliberately changed it back to being wrong

OMG!!! are you bold yet?

now I just fix it silently and die a little inside every week
@Kate bald spot on the top of my head, growing rapidly, and I'm 28 :)

when was the last time you had time off?

I only get 5 days a year of time off that isn't forced vacation by the company
we have holidays, then 5 days of "vacation" that we're forced to take on specific days, then 5 days of vacation we can take any time

5:40 PM
I guess it's a smaller company that you work for

nope, 90k+ employees

:O what?!

people are leaving in droves after they changed the policy recently to really screw over everyone on their vacation... we used to have 10 days we could take whenever we wanted, now we only have 5... we still get the same number of days off in a year, but 5 of them are dictated by the company

I've never worked for a larger company, but I thought they are more lax with vacations ect

@Kate this company's logo is in the dictionary under the definition of "cheap"
a cup of coffee costs a quarter

5:42 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I came into the conversation way too late... Wow

so I have to ask.... why are you staying?

I had a company that dictated vacation time for most employees, except for me... I told them when I was first hired that it would be a deal breaker for me if I couldn't choose my vacation

@Kate no other options

are you self thought?
because you seem to know quite a bit, so I'm surprised that you don't think you have other options

@Kate what does that mean?
you're going to have to be a little more specific

5:43 PM
Do you learn through your own means, as opposed to going to school for everything

@CanadianLuke absolutely

@CanadianLuke thanks :)

@Kate No problem. I'm also self-taught, so I understood what you meant

99% of companies go strictly by your "qualifications" though

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Not in Canada!

5:44 PM
me too :)
honestly, I've worked with IT engineers, and it wasn't a good experience

At least for the tech jobs I"ve had, I've only ever had my CompTIA A+, but I get higher up positions right out of the interview

@CanadianLuke good for you!

My current job, I answered all 10 "tech questions" correctly, and it put me above people who went to university and such. I went through everything on my own, self taught, through experience... And that led me to be one of the lead techs in the district

@CanadianLuke all I know of CompTIA is their name
and I'm not interested in being a desktop support professional, anyway

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I found the same, after the last company I was working for downsized I thought I was doomed

5:46 PM
A+ is the most basic tech support certificate I ever heard of
Experience, and adaptability to change. I noticed those are the two biggest factors

I think getting A+ certified would send the wrong message and actually hinder my hireability

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ what would be your ideal job/position?

It was required for technical people, at least here in my province... Every tech shop has to boast that their techs are certified, and they use that as the measuring stick

@CanadianLuke the last company I worked for was all about certifications just so they can keep their Microsoft partner sticker

@Kate desktop software, PC game, or middleware software developer (preferably targeting GNU/Linux or *NIX)

5:50 PM
Here, people acknowledge that certificates are just paper, and don't transfer to real world experience. So, I saved lots of money :)

I'm moderately satisfied as a tester with frequent software development assignments. it's close to my ideal job.
would love to do away with all the administrative overhead though

so other then the people aspect your job is pretty good

I spend about 60% of my time either working on useless documents that nobody reads, or helping other people
yeah, if people and managers would leave me alone and let me code and execute tests, I'd be happy (not with the pay and benefits, but with the work)

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ and I'll assume you're a perfectionist and the reports can't be just thrown together (since nobody looks at them)

Are you who I think you are?

5:53 PM
@Kate well, they go through two internal reviews by people who nitpick them to death
but once they leave our internal team, and get sent to the customer, the customer never looks at them

lol self-thought vs self-taught?

so they "keep me honest" by reviewing them

that's sad and sooooo typical

@jokerdino I teach therefore I am
3

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ nicely done

5:54 PM
@jokerdino you are correct :) it's self-taught

:O It's cool!

ESL is my excuse :P

sometimes I feel like people wait until I put my headphones on to come talk to me
hour without headphones on; no one comes
start playing music.... somebody needs help

@ThatBrazilianGuy sometimes I feel like people wait until 5 minutes before closing time on to come talk to me (source)

5:56 PM
closing time? as in, a time after which you stop working because of the clock being at a certain position? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAH.

@ThatBrazilianGuy You do not have permission to use the command undo

there is no closing.

@Kate me too

I have an office, so I just use speakers :)

this is the second time today I've been jealous of someone here

5:57 PM
that reminds me. Yo hablo un poco de español!

@jokerdino darn, there goes my excuse
I have an office and still wear earplugs and earphones

4 hours ago, by ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ
I'm jealous

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ :) I'm sure I don't get the kind of pay you get though

@CanadianLuke I'm sure you make $10k+ more than me
didn't we already do this once?

I get crazy benefits, but I don't see it as money coming in to me
I don't remember... Did we? I'm sure you make more than me

5:58 PM
He doesn't.

I get next to no benefits and I don't see it as money coming in to me

He's basically a locked in lab rat.

pay is just one attribute... you have to factor in the cost of living too

anyway I'll disclose my salary in hexadecimal :D

:D

5:59 PM
no, wait, base 4! something odd like that
