8:00 PM
sorry
it's the other one
this is eclipse.ini
in ....drivers/etc/hosts ther is :
127.0.0.1 localhost

# Adobe Activation Block v2.

is it case sensitive?
i need to add a line into it
transaltion of a name to IP address
so I will add something like:
191.191.20.40 ABC
if i add "191.191.20.40 abc", it's gonna have the same effect?

@EinsteinsGrandson Stealing Adobe software, are we? :D
2

yes, after 30 years
and i find Adobe Acrobat pretty good
it's just that i am pushed to create PDF files... and using Acrobat is the best way ...
the easiest and quickest
before it took me 2 hours to creat a PDF file
now it's 1 second

We're usually not so big on piracy in this room
2

what do you mean big on piracy?
i don't want to install any illega software

It means "Get help with your piracy elsewhere"

8:08 PM
just working on a school project
Oliver , how about European and US soldiers killing millions in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq
innocent people
and we do nothing to stop it
we even support it
indirectly
that's much worse than piracy

@EinsteinsGrandson I'm not directly supporting it to my knowledge. I don't have much control over the indirect support
But I agree, it is worse than piracy

What I wanted to say is: It's not black and white world
and I had many opportunities to steal and get away with it
or cheat
but i didn't
because i have principles and you have to kill me if you want me to break these principles

there are even companies that push you to use pirated software

@EinsteinsGrandson I'm not interested in changing your morals. You're actually given the benefit of the doubt in these cases usually. But obvious references to piracy don't belong here

8:16 PM
if you don't , they fire you

@EinsteinsGrandson So, what does that imply?

that sometimes you have to break the rule
even if you don't want to
becasue you part of the system

Or that "you getting fired" is obviously more important than the people who made the product you're stealing?

you don't live on your own in the forest
you don't want to loose the job
especially in these crazy times
in my opinion it's better to work in a company that pushes you to use pirated software , when it's a consulting company.... offering consulting services

I hope someone breaks into your house tonight and teaches you something about right & wrong :P

8:20 PM
than to work for some tabacoo company that doesn't break any rule but is reponsible of millions of deaths each year
They already did

So, it's okay to act immorally as long as you are doing it?

but i know what is right and wrong since i was 5 years old
Sometimes you don't have a choice
If you have a choice , you should choose the other option of course

True, sometimes you don't

Tell me the worst thing that happened to you

Well, if your employer is forcing you to use illegal copies of a software and you simply can not get any other job and you and your family would all starve and die if you quit your job... then it is still not alright to get help with it here ;D

8:24 PM
i am using pirated microsoft
windows
but i can get legal copy

Then why don't you?

i was talking to microsfot people about the licence

What "Microsoft people"?

because i had some problem
with the licence
the people that are empoyees of microsoft and are reponsible for that

Obviously...

8:27 PM
i found email on microsoft support website
for windows

So, what were they telling you?

to fuck off ... sugar coded way...
that they don't have time for me
and don't care
i bought the licecne so i have right to use it right?

Yeah, they do that to all the paying customers

so, now i use a pirated windows
just because of them

@EinsteinsGrandson You have the right to return the product if it doesn't work as advertised. You don't have the right to steal additional instances of the product you purchased

8:32 PM
you think MS would give me some money back for a licence that is 6+ years old?
I was talking to some MS programmers and they even say that MS is a shitty company
they said the same ...

Brother works for MS. Says it's awesome.

@EinsteinsGrandson Where did you buy this 6+ year old license?

that when they have some problem , their supervisor/managers just don't help them
in the czech repbulic

@EinsteinsGrandson Then why would you call Microsoft if it doesn't work? You should have called the Czech Republic

if i could i would use Linux instead of Windows
I don't even want to use Windows
But I am pushed to do so
because there is a lot of software that is running only on Winodows

8:35 PM
So, wait, you bought some fake 6+year old license off the street. It didn't work, so you called MS support. They told you to fuck off (obviously, because you don't have a legit license). And now you think, through all this, you've earned the right to get an illegal copy of Windows?

and I need to us that software
use

I have to say, I disagree with that logic.

no, I bouthg the licence 6 years ago
and it was not fake

Oh, okay
So it worked fine when you bought it?

yes
the thing was i needed to reinstall the system

8:38 PM
Well then I don't see why it shouldn't work any more
Could be interesting to investigate

but didn't have the licence
anymore
the code:
of the licence

That's why they make the sticker, so you don't lose the code ;)
Well, if you lost the code, I can understand that the Microsoft support was in no mood to help.

but there is some database of all the notebooks that were sold right?
at least for brands like Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo

@EinsteinsGrandson Not that I'm aware of. The hardware is sold be resellers
Microsoft just sells the licences to them, they put the stickers on the hardware and re-sell the whole package.

So , what if i lost my code?

8:44 PM
That's also why you don't get any technical support from Microsoft directly

I need to buy a new licecne?

They always send you to the resellers
@EinsteinsGrandson I guess so. As I said, that's why they put the sticker on the laptop
So, to lose the code, you'd have to lose the laptop
And, in that case, you probably have bigger worries :D
And, also in that case, the OS was part of the stolen/lost laptop
You're not entitled to free RAM or a free CPU just because you lose your laptop

Another thing, I emailed a question about free student licecnces to a guy from Microsoft who is in charge of MS student program for the whole country
and his answer was: I am enjoying my vaccation

lol
So... you emailed him again after his vacation, right?

I will write you back in 4-5 weeks, after I get back to work
no
I ddin't
I assume he got back from vaccation and found 10.000 emails in his Inbox

8:49 PM
Probably, yeah :D

and just didn't have time to answer all of them

So, you already realized that his inbox was probably filled to the top, why don't you mail him again?

beacause i needed to solve the problem in like 3 days
not in 4 or 5 weeks

Oh. I thought you wanted to get a student license from him

i sort it out somehow
I talked to MS HR guy about chances to get a job in MS for graduates
;-)
and he told me they only hire 3-4 graduets a year
so it's almost impossible to get there

8:53 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson Why would you do something like that? I heard Microsoft was a shitty place to work at! ;)

;o)
I would give it a chane
but maybe you're right, i should be happy that it tuned out like that

actually, you seem like the perfect person to work at Microsoft

maybe i would suffer a lot in there
maybe i will end up over there anyway...

my boss is an ex-Microsoftie

Never let them see a transcript of this chat though ;)

8:56 PM
or in a company that offers solution that is tied with microsoft product
I think they would be OK with it
this is the culture of MS
they know they are shitty but accept it
;-)
and still make billions each year
just compare Google products or Apple products to MS products...
Android phone, iPhone and Windows Phone
How about Win8 ?
You still love it?
Internet Explorer and Chrome and Safari
Windows vs. Mac OS X vs. Ubuntu
Google Search, Yahoo Search, Bing Search

A: Migrate raw disk image over LAN

Michael HamptonThis is messy, but doable. I presume here that / is on /dev/sda3 and that /boot is on /dev/sda1. Shrink the filesystem on the old server to its minimum possible size. oldserver # resize2fs -M /dev/sda3 Partition the new server's disk with an identically sized /boot, swapspace, and new / part...

that's exactly what I need @Tanner ^^
I'll probably end up doing it over several days
tonight: resize the source partition
tomorrow: copy it over
day after: setup and boot the new server
looking at an extended downtime... but i don't care

A friend handed me an android tablet which he had forgot the password for it. I quickly found out a "reset to factory defaults" function, but I'm not using it. Instead, I've spent 30min looking for USB drivers for windows, connected it via USB and I'm downloading 400MB of the Android SDK in order to try to hack it.

@RudáAlmeida :P

@allquixotic Nice.

@EinsteinsGrandson Bullzip PDF Printer is free, works with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php

The blue hedgehog/porcupine came through =D

9:35 PM
@allquixotic I do it because I find it fun. I wonder if others would think I'm weird.

@Tanner yeah he's awesome
I probably could have figured that out on my own but he took me from "eh, I can kind of see what to do" to "that exactly works"
and he's right that it's messy

Is Ferland's answer cleaner?
Or is it the whole permissions issue?

not really
it still leaves weird problems like how to deal with hardlinks, special files, sparse files, etc
not sure if rsync can handle all of that
I literally do not want to change anything but the hardware
and the IPs

ahh
I noticed he neglected to reply to your comment lol

who?

9:43 PM
Ferland
> as long as it preserves all discretionary access controls (a la chmod) and can cleanly copy over symlinks and device files

Michael? the response would probably be "yea"
man there's a good bit of interest in that Q

Yeah =D Turned out to be a good one.

A: Why does my VM hang on "Windows is loading files..." during a sysprep and capture task sequence?

WinOutreach4There are several log files that MDT creates during various stages of the deployment/capture problem. The TechNet article ‘Understanding Failures and Log Files’ will help you find them so that you can see what errors may be present. Another tip for MDT’s log files is to set the rule SLShare="path...

lol you got an answer from MDT Guy -- I guess he does MDT for a living

Seems so. They're both kind of missing the point though... I dunno if I wasn't clear or...?

9:49 PM
It's not loading anything from the WDS server anymore. In fact, I broke it and had to start over. =D

@Tanner oy.
I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Apparently renaming a WDS server and joining it to AD after telling it to be a standalone server is a bad idea.
I could probably fix it but... it'd be less work to reinstall at this point.

@Luke is like the interior decorator woman with the crazy hair and the loud voice: most of what she suggests is prudent and adds nicely to the environment of the place; but every once in a while she introduces something that's so far out in left field that you just want to Remove Element.
(the ones today are nice btw)

haha
I like the grammar shirt...

10:06 PM
@Tanner I'm beginning to think Evan Carroll is Jeff Atwood or Joel Spolsky in disguise, trying his darndest to "game the system" to see if someone will snap and break the guidelines or something

Bob
lol

@allquixotic Nobody ever does though O_o
Well, the Comms Room does go off on him, but no more than is normal for them.

Q: First time wifi user

user201306My inlaws across the street from me (approximately 500-600 metres away) have wifi. I would like to pull the connection to my house. I have no idea what to do? If someone could please explain to me (in lay mans terms as I am not a computer wizz) what I have to buy, and how to set it up so I can p...

lul

that is how I see myself as sounding when I ask an SF question

lmao

My inlaws across the street from me (approximately 2 racks over) have OpenVZ. I would like to pull the data to my new server. I have no idea what to do?

10:22 PM
Do you get nervous when you hit the "Post Your Question" button? I do :P

@Tanner not on SU, but then I rarely ask questions on SU hahahaha
I get nervous when I post on mechanics or SO, or to a lesser extent SF

I mean on SF
lol 8 questions on SU

@Tanner I'm thinking about closing this as NARQ, but honestly @allquixotic should just put his comment as an answer :P

@slhck done

I'm sure we had such a question before tho

10:34 PM
is it possible to find out the password of a wi fi network?

@EinsteinsGrandson WPA, or WEP?

let's imagine it's just alphanumberic 5-charcter password?

WEP is easy. WPA, especially if it's WPA2-AES can be really really difficult / impractical if the password is strong

what if it's a weak password?

I love WEP
--on other people routers

10:36 PM
ok, so which software shoul i use?
for wep

@EinsteinsGrandson unless you know for a fact that it's a weak password, the mere fact that it happens to be a weak password (without your knowledge of whether or not it is) doesn't really make it easier to crack
you could assume that it is a weak password and try a bunch of obvious possibilities but that doesn't mean you'll get in, it may be a complicated password

@EinsteinsGrandson Aircrack or something like that.

ok i will try it

Aircrack does it in a matter of minutes.

i will let you know

10:39 PM
aircrack only works on WEP afaik
might also be practical on WPA1-TKIP or so
but WPA2-AES is really, really good
(if the password isn't "password")

@allquixotic Does WPA-PSK as well.

@slhck hmm... in a short amount of time, even if the password is complex?

@allquixotic No, probably not. If it could pull that off we'd have lots of problems I guess.

@slhck the weakness of WEP is that the key is the same all the time, so once you find a collision (a password that produces the same key), you're in
WPA-TKIP is basically WEP with a rotating key that changes every 60 seconds or so, which is still somewhat hackable

@allquixotic Yup. IV repetition and that.

10:42 PM
WPA-AES is basically using the crypto algorithm that makes SSL so secure, applied to wifi
AES probably isn't invulnerable (what is?) so once it gets hacked, both your data link layer and your https connections are compromised at once -- joy
but, so far, AES with a good key length, a good (P)RNG or other entropy source, and a bug-free implementation, lends itself to pretty much impenetrable security at that layer, so most security compromises occur at a higher layer, as in all the browser XSS stuff
not only are higher layer attacks easier (they don't involve crypto) but they're more likely to succeed... perfect breeding grounds for exploits
which is why I'm an application security tester and not a link layer security tester
just over 900 rep to mod tools....
CBA to run for mod election once I have mod tools, I'll basically be a mod minus the diamond and blue name
ROFL
> Frequent disconnections from games
post title.

^_^
I saw that one

me: "yup, that'll do it every time"
damnit, we need a canonical answer for that so we can dupe all these questions

Let's write one.
The end all eff wifi canonical :P

it's basically "look at the tom's hardware article and summarize it into about a page worth of reading"

Also screw Tom's Hardware. So many ads and so many pages...

10:52 PM
lol.
but it's informative :(

That's why it hurts.

Q: advice on generating reports with Excel vs Microsoft Access

TristanI have a Microsoft Access based tool that lacks the reporting capability I need. The tool is able to extract extract each table from its relational database as a separate CSV file. These files aren't too easily read by humans, since you need to cross reference the IDs from each file. I need to c...

WTF. "I have tables in Access and I want to make reports by exporting to CSV and parsing them in Excel"
Hello, Access has built-in reports module

Bob
> Microsoft Access based tool
most likely just something that uses the DB backend (Jet?) and not actually Access
At least, that's what it sounds like

11:09 PM
@allquixotic Thanks the the compliment :)
@Tanner I'm gonna find it and get that shirt

11:21 PM
I hope MDTGuy sticks around. He could be really useful to me. xD haha

11:47 PM
@Hennes Thanks for adding that picture haha
Didn't catch there was a switch in there...

I wanted to ask him to check the 'yellow' cable

Yeah. That and check if the router is negotiating 1gbps with the swtich...

There are probably LEDs for that on the switch.
@EinsteinsGrandson Does the target router have WPS enabled?
If it does you might get lucky with superuser.com/questions/528892/…
