Q: Make the use of an OS tag compulsory for all questions

terdonIf I had a penny for every time I have left a comment on a question asking the OP to state which OS they are using I would be one rich geek. The answers to the vast majority of computer related questions depend on the operating system being used but many many users forget to give this information...

Hey do you guys know of any software to keep the same folders on two different hard drives in sync ?
@JourneymanGeek knock knock

@LittleChild one way or two way?

one way... from internal to external

If its one way bvckup

hold on, checkinh

1:29 AM
iNSTALLING
for every directory, I will have to create a new backup ?

er... presumably
or just backup the 'parent' directory?

yeah, great idea :)
@JourneymanGeek have you used bvckup before ?

yeah
fairly regularly

It says that the folder in the destination already exists and is not empty
cause I have done some manual backup fairly recently

yeah, initial sync needs to be from scratch >_>
thats the one weakness of this

1:37 AM
damnnnnnnnN!!!!
WD Smartware is a good software but I guess it encrypts the data >_>

I have no idea
I tend to dump the preinstalled stuff ;p

hi all
Im new here and have a problem. Hope this is the rigth place to ask:
I think my system has a virus. My antivirus cant find it
I need to remove the virus
have no idea where it is

@JABFreeware what makes you think that ?

any good DEEP scanning programs that specialize in find viruses?

1:42 AM
have you updated the database of your anti-virus ??

@LittleChild well,

I think my system has a virus
what makes you think that ?

@JABFreeware: symptoms would help

my cursor skips (no its not a hardware problem), the system keeps getting slower and slower. Tried defrag. My browsers are getting slow and doing stupid stiff like when I open a new tab...DELAY...but not always. So registery entries are getting changed
suprissing it boots at normal speed

try a memory test

1:44 AM
mem usage is fine

hate to suggest a copout, but... tried reinstalling?

new mem

just installed?

cleared your temp files using CCleaner ?

@JourneymanGeek thats a last resort for me
@JourneymanGeek No, its 2 months old or something
8g

1:45 AM
there was a question some time back where someone installed new memory, and that specific config slowed down the system
@JABFreeware: what flavour of windows?

@JourneymanGeek 8
pro
@LittleChild I'll try that

@JABFreeware: resource manager may be useful for tracking down the issue...
I tend to favour malwarebytes for systems I suspect has a virus

@JourneymanGeek thing is its not pushing my resources

MBAM is an anti-malware
not an anti-virus

@LittleChild: there's little practical difference

1:47 AM
but I guess windows 8 has an inbuilt AV+AM ?

@LittleChild guess it could be either

also, its effective enough that lots of viruses try to block it

@LittleChild no I didabled defender

@JABFreeware: o0

@JABFreeware why ?

1:47 AM
why?

I use Avast
dont trust defender

ahh ok

besides not compat with avast

@JourneymanGeek is avast better then defender ?

I run MSSE, and it works great, so I trust defender
not IMO, but well, to each his own

1:48 AM
@LittleChild yes

yeah, I use MSE
and MBAM
never had a virus in years now :D

@LittleChild what does MSE stand for?

microsoft security essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

UGH

1:48 AM
defender is exactly the same

I HATE IT

its slow scanning

slow updating
finiky updates

1:49 AM
@JABFreeware how fast is your internet ?

@LittleChild MAX is 2.5mb/s

so Updates should be fairly fast

@LittleChild not a supre reliable connection
broadband

so why is broadband not reliable ?
0o

@LittleChild its verizon

1:50 AM
ok!

sometimes drops out

almost CC is analyzing
@LittleChild I cant use that

wh y?

my IIS limits me to 5 g/month
I would use too much I'm almost sure

1:51 AM
it is a free scanner !
o h ok
@JourneymanGeek any ideas on how to locate the virus ?

here is something weird
disk usage right now

what is your disk usage ?

oh nvm. thought something was happening when it wasnt
but even right now
nothing is running except the brwoser and cc

@JABFreeware u are getting scared for no reason

cc is not scanning

1:54 AM
do you know what a page swap is ?

the response time is like 2 seconds and the active time is 100%

have you got background programs running ?

well, I wouldn't be using it
mem usage is only 32%
oh skype. That all

page swap = some files from memory moved to HDD AUTOMATICALLY by OS. This will also lead to disk usage

100% activity time?

1:56 AM
try using CrystalDiskInfo to see if it is a HDD problem
if your HDD is about to crash, it will behave that way. It happened with mine.

@LittleChild uh oh

do it and gimme a screenshot of the report it generates. cross out the drive serial number

okay, cc is cleaning. and downloading DiskInfo

@LittleChild okay crossing out serial num
ugh if powerpoint will load

2:00 AM
no no, I meant get a screenshot
print screen
of the report that gets displayed :)

yeah I know. Hadd to cross out the drive serial num though

cleaned using CC ?

looks ok other than running a little hot

@LittleChild yeah. BTW, right as I was installing the above program

Your temp is in the not-so-nice range

2:02 AM
it hung right as I clicked next, just to bring me to the license agreement

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT ??? CCLEANER DELETES TEMPORARY FILES!!

@LittleChild not at the same time

CCleaner deletes temp files, bro :) run it when nothing else is running
install CCleaner, run the cleaner and screenshot the report to us

@LittleChild you missunderstnad read my edit above

never mind :P

2:03 AM
@LittleChild yeah. BTW, right as I was installing the above program
so what should I do?

sometimes, the cache memory gets all clogged with unnecessary files. CCleaner cleans them
first, if you have any files in your recycle bin that you may need, get them out

@LittleChild I ran it, and it cleaned. No dif

CCleaner will delete them and you wont get them back

@LittleChild oh I unchecked that

it is up2 you whether you want the bin deleted or not
I delete it, it may be different for you

2:05 AM
should I run cc again?

how many MB of memory did CC clean ?

@LittleChild did see
didnt*
does it keep a log?

try restarting your PC and see if you get any difference
I guess not
are u using a laptop ?

@LittleChild yes

ah .. do something to reduce the temp of the HDD. it is way 2 high
my temp at the moment is 38C

2:07 AM
@LittleChild its sitting on a flat table top
fans running
nothing blocked

you dont have to buy an expensive coller, just be creative

sigh, well it does this even from a literally cold start

yeah BUT the heat dissipates in downward direction too and needs some space to dissipate

if your HDD is at 53, your CPu may be way higher

2:08 AM
@JABFreeware: well, if its malware, have you seen the community FAQ on that?

@JourneymanGeek no
I dont hang out here much

if CPU is high on temp, it will slow down --- stop executing instructions and will give you a perception that PC is slow

@LittleChild lemme check that

sure!

@LittleChild know a good tool
hw mon is not compat with win 8

2:09 AM
Piriform Speecy
Speccy*

downloading

if cpu temp is high, you need a way to cool it down. there is no malware, presumably

Q: How do I get rid of malicious spyware, malware, viruses or rootkits from my PC?

GnoupiWhat should I do if my Windows computer seems to be infected with a virus or malware? What are the symptoms of an infection? What should I do after noticing an infection? What can I do to get rid of it? This question comes up frequently, and the suggested solutions are usually the same. Th...

@JourneymanGeek thanks I'll look at that soon.
@LittleChild its analizing

2:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek isnt it that if CPU is heated it slows down adn some time seven shuts down to protect itself /

@LittleChild yes thats true.

so maybe that is your case

throttling. thanks for the idea didnt think of it. Its almost done scanning i think

@LittleChild: it would need to SERIOUSLY heat up to cause thermal throttling
hmm
speedfan might help with that, I think

okay, I'll printscreen

2:13 AM
sure, we are waiting
Speccy has a CPU section that will list the cpu info

I really appreciate this help, thanks!

ooh yeah
that's WAAAY too hot

@JourneymanGeek really?

yeah
nice catch @LittleChild

@JourneymanGeek thanks @LittleChild

2:15 AM
wayyyyyy 2 hot
just like me ;)
it will shut down if you do not cool it
just be creative, do not buy a laptop cooler

actually
your processor load is pretty high

i use little mats used to keep hot cups

what's causing it?

Win8 on Pentium ? :p

(task manager -> resource monitor)
Its a 'modern' pentium

2:16 AM
Arandale

its an i5

pentiums these days are the 'budget' chips

first gen processor

ok....

2:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek I know, I dont have much money

just thought I would share: youtube.com/watch?v=IY8uaT8qhFQ

@JABFreeware: no no. Pentiums also mean pentium 1s
@JABFreeware: could you give me a screenshot of resource manager?

nvm, lets try to reduce his CPU temp

@JourneymanGeek sure.

and yeah of the Processes tab
and Applications tab

2:18 AM

(and this is the problem with all your systems running perfectly, I MISS troubleshooting ><)

dang
the disk stays at 98%

thats not normal

looks fine to me ?

2:19 AM
for this PC

have a look at the tiny buffer your HDD has
it is only 8MB
and the rpm
that will cause the HDD to flush the buffer rather quickly

@LittleChild I know, its economy not speed

and write it to the disc

order it by disk usage please

so HDD usage goes up
increasing order please

2:20 AM

@LittleChild: eheh. My linux partition runs off a 40gb new/old stock drive
now shit gets wierd

@JourneymanGeek what?

please tag him when you talk to him. he may get confused :)

well, the numbers certainly don't add up
could you switch it to percentages please?

@JourneymanGeek why is it scrwed ?

2:22 AM
@LittleChild I know, it makes no sense

97% disk usage at that speed?

thats why I thought virus. But looks like the temp is scertianly not helping

@JABFreeware: we're getting closer to the answer
@JABFreeware: and your disk seems incredibly slow

very less demand from processes but very high usage ? @JourneymanGeek

@JourneymanGeek its not a slow drive. I mean not THAT slow

2:23 AM
I don't mean cheapo slow. I mean "I shouldn't be seeing these numbers" slow
Precisely

@JABFreeware dude, how do you take a screen shot ? just print screen and paste it in paint :) directly

It didnt used to run at 98% constantly

@LittleChild: maybe win printscreen
also, the snipping tool is AWESOME for single window screenies

@JourneymanGeek its not with win 8

yaeh, snipping :)

2:26 AM
Ill paint

@JABFreeware: good news, its probably not a virus
bad news, it REALLY looks like its the disk

@JourneymanGeek so..... Backup soon!?

@JABFreeware disc crash ?

@JABFreeware: yeah, and actually I think its worth asking a question on the main site
@LittleChild: I've seen something similar with an older disk
just nothing this.. extreme

2:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek what would I say?
@LittleChild I really apreciate your help. Your rep looks nice!
@JourneymanGeek You also!

@JourneymanGeek I use HDTune Pro for disk monitoring

@JABFreeware: mention the issues, say you suspected malware, but when talking to people on chat, found out your drive was slow. Then link (cropped) screenshots of the information you got

nothing inbuilt in windows 7 sadly

@JourneymanGeek okay I will do that

If it needs fixing I'll help, I actually think this might be a good question for reference

2:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek I bookmarked this room
I'll post

post question on main site -> copy the link from the browser and paste it here

@LittleChild k

plus I suspect it is the temp causing problems

before buying a new HDD, reduce the temp

2:30 AM
drives thermal throttling due to heat?

yes
and slows down

that would be unusual, but dosen't explain the high 'load' with slow transfer speeds
which is interesting

and keeps doing pace replacement over a long period of time

pace replacement?

the memory usage was also not high. if there was a virus , the memory usage will be high
page replacement = move unwanted files from memory to HDD

2:32 AM
memory load wasn't that high either tho

hmm....
I got creative, I use these to raise my laptop google.co.in/…
got about 1cm gap brtween the table and the base
HDD at 37 and CPU at 43 :) what more could I ask :D

lol
built my own out of MDF and wood ;p

@JourneymanGeek now time to install Ubuntu in VMWare

cost me... 4 dollars
I could get a nice one for a tenner here tho

i found that a lot of them are ill-designed. A lot
a batter one would be either your or my trick and a table fan
must take around half an hour to install Ubuntu in VMWare considering my 2B ram
@JourneymanGeek looks like I will have to close Chrome to save RAM

2:37 AM
what're you planning to do with it?

I have no experience of Ubuntu
not even the basic of how to install and uninstall softwares
need to know it.
so 45mins and I will be a Ubuntu-er
cya for now

Q: New drive has high usage but slow speed. Whole system running hot

JABFreewareI originally suspected malware, because my pointer skips and my system gets slower and slower by day. I recently had a reg entry get messed up for no reason. But after talking with some people in chat and running some tools, we found something rather interesting and don't think its a virus. Here ...

@LittleChild @JourneymanGeek ^

looks good
upvoted

@JourneymanGeek thanks
I must go guys. Thanks for all the help.

2 hours later…
4:34 AM
Woohoo! Congrats @jokerdino for being elected as an Ask Ubuntu mod!

yeah
and.. I get a chance to use grumpy cat again ;p

hehe

4:58 AM
@Sathya thanks =)
feels weird wearing the diamond..

@jokerdino start singing
> I'm blue DA BA DE DA BA DI DA BA DE DA BA DI DA BA DE DA BA DI DA BA DE DA BA DI DA BA DE DA BA DI DA BA DE DA BA DI

Haha
Need to figure how not to use the powers for evil :P
But from what I have seen, it is quite a bit powerful.

5:18 AM
@jokerdino: with great power comes SMITE SMITE SMITE

megalomania

speaking of mods...
superuser.com/questions/536129/… an answer to this seems to be completely copied off a forum post. It does stand alone - do I flag it or?

5:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek perhaps summarize it & quote it?

@JourneymanGeek I hit some roadblocks while installing Ubuntu on my VMWare Workstation
@Sathya it is a series of steps to do something about OpenGL

@LittleChild yeah I realize that

@Sathya do u have any experience with VMWare ? :)

Good Goo @Nhinkle... There's no need to give me 700 total rep for this question:
31
Q: Is there an equivalent to Windows To Go for personal use?

nhinkleWindows To Go is one of the most exciting Windows 8 features to me - the ability to pack up your desktop environment and take it with you anywhere is extremely appealing. Unfortunately, it's only included with Windows 8 Enterprise, which you can't buy for individual use. Is there an equivalent t...

@LittleChild what's the problem

5:42 AM
@Sathya Ubuntu got stuck for almost an hour on the Retrieving Files 31 of 81 stage
I hit the Skip button
is it normal for it to take that long ?

retrieve files from where

that is my question: from where ? I was using the ISO to install it on VM
@Sathya so I let it sit there for about 40 mins, no progress so I hit SKIP

ISO on local hard disk?

have you enabled VT-x in BIOS as mentioned earlier? How much RAM is allocated to the guest and how much do you have on host?

5:48 AM
yes !!
I have 2GB on host and of that 1.33 is used by Win7

@LittleChild how much have you allocated to Ubuntu?

It didnt ask. I clicked on the Create new Virtual Machine option on the front

check from settings & see.
did you check the download updates at this screen?

don't look at me, I use KDE ;p
and/or often build off minimal

5:53 AM
Everyone seems to be having that problem

I dunno, I've installed 12.10 & 12.04 on my VMWare

you dint get the Retrieving files stage /
@Sathya plus, the computer went super slow after I closed VM. Like look 3 minutes to respond to shutdown command
@Sathya checked the preferences of VMWare. It has 1434MB reserved for VM

@LittleChild that's too much

reduce to what value ?

you're into the disk thrashing/swapping
512M

5:58 AM
what do you mean by the disk thrashing/swapping ?
