12:05 AM
@OliverSalzburg hahaha

1 hour later…
Bob
1:13 AM
damn it
Google trying to be smart

Damn you steam and its promotions! I was going to buy just one or two cheap games, not spend $77 in games.
2

Bob
but StackOverflowException does not mean Stack Overflow as in Stack Overflow...
which makes a large majority of my search results useless :\
oh, looks like quotes work on single words
yay

@Bob We need a semantic web!
@Bob Not only that, Google actually deimplemented? removed? deprecated? the "+" operator.
Everything for promotimng the most popular social network no one uses

@RudáAlmeida: that sucks
I liked the plus operator

@JourneymanGeek Every advanced user loved that. I wonder if they removed the minus operator, there's no doublequoting around that.

1:22 AM
Nope, - did not get removed
and ~ still works. Damn it.
(recently looked for "~orig" files).

what does ~ do?
I wonder if AND still works

what does ~ do? [2]

Google uses ~ as 'like' operator. I could not find out how to avoid that. Quotes did not help, escaping with a backslah did not help. Using advanced search did not help, ..

ok, that was awesome :)

Some superuser question asked what "host~orig" was on his mac.
I have no idea which program created those, but I know "filename~" and "filename.orig" as used as backups for some editors. "~orig" seems something I should be able to google

1:42 AM

2:31 AM
@HackToHell ahahahaha I ate dinner and came back to that before getting it...
~_~

2:42 AM
...Does anyone have experience with LXDE?

4 hours later…
7:12 AM
@ekaj: used to run it ages ago ;p

hola!
@JourneymanGeek how are you ? :)

lol
annoyed ;p

why ? :/

at a group project where my main role here seems to be tablesitting ;p

:D
I have a project to do, too
and for that I need to create a presentation report
explaining the concepts and stuff
boring :D

7:18 AM
I'd rather be at home ;p

I was wondering about creating a pattern similar to the one they use in the Head First books
@JourneymanGeek any idea how to ?

I've never used the head first books ;p
sadly enough I don't code at all

4 hours later…
11:07 AM

The price seems to be too low for the configuration

11:46 AM
@HackToHell Must be because Windows 8 is installed on it ;P

lol :D apart from that everything about it seems to be awesome for the price

Windows 8 subsidies things? o.O

I was only kidding
...hopefully

Actually, who knows. MS might do such things

I'd love to say, you're crazy, but... you're not :D

11:50 AM
:D

lol
PS4 has 8 GB of unified GDDR5 memory
iirc GDDR5 is only suited for GPU computations
And they are implementing suspend in a GDDR5 module instead of a DDR3 module o0

12:12 PM
user image
2
3d \o/

Bob
@HackToHell hey, that's me! :P

lol 3:D bob

Bob
@HackToHell I don't really see the need of that much (graphics) memory :\

They seem to be planning for the future !
Even then 8 gigs is way too much

12:33 PM
The ps3 had 256mb of ram, or was it 512, and ran things fine, the ps4/720 are just right out standard gaming computers, if they don't come with a dual boot function, then they will be the most useless game consoles on record hardware wise

Bob
@user88311 Standard gaming computers? The CPUs on those things are still pretty week...

@OliverSalzburg I don't get it, what's in the box?

@Paul Not sure...
Maybe a hub!

It's a trap!

12:42 PM
The switches I use look like this:

Bob
...
:P
@OliverSalzburg you using that at home?

Mine have less transparency artifacts through

@Bob That is @OliverSalzburg

@Bob Not in mine, no :(

Bob
@Paul yea, got the wrong number. sorry

12:45 PM
@Bob I use brainless netgear switches at home (home office)

It will first be used for fair booth infrastructure and then it will probably be installed at our HQ

Bob
A fair booth needs (how many ports is it) that?

@Bob It's a 24 port one
It's a big booth :P

Anyone here used OSX?

Bob
@HaydnWVN not me! :P

12:51 PM
@HaydnWVN It's been a couple of years
And I was forced to do it

Bob
lol

I can't install a printer as it can't run apple update (as its not allowed on our network for internet access)

Bob
..

Does anyone want free legal music ?
New albums everyday for a week !

Thanks for sharing :)

1:00 PM
I actually found it on @Sathya's twitter but oh well :D :)

@HackToHell I wonder if it's DRM-free

@RudáAlmeida It is

Bob
@HackToHell all their music is so much cheaper :\

@Bob ya :D I think you can buy from there, not sure though

Bob
lol
I might do that the next time I feel like buying music

1:05 PM
The rock and jazz/blues free selections are quite good

1:25 PM
Yes, I did it!
I got a comment flagged as offensive.

Heh, I just accidentally gave a file a .website extension
That's somewhat weird

@slhck Lol where/why?

Don't cross post. You can't just go ahead and post your question on all sites. The question should go to Stack Overflow, so please ask there. You should also format your code properly. — slhck 3 mins ago
Cross posted to SU, SF, and Programmers.
Obviously question banned on SO.

Hahaha

@slhck lol, your comment was flagged as offensive :D

1:29 PM
3 mins ago, by slhck
I got a comment flagged as offensive.

Bob
:P

Damn...

:P

I'm obviously more focused on link-clicking than I am on reading :P

1:31 PM
Serial vote him down lol

is there any portable software for managing the fan in my pc?
i downloaded speedfan portable
but i can't run it

@EinsteinsGrandson Why do you need portable?

@HaydnWVN Good idea. Because that's what we mods do all the time. Closing all questions, being rude, serially downvoting users :P

It's built into Win7

because i am in the pc lab at the university
i am not an admin
so i can't install any software in here

1:32 PM
@slhck I'm not a mod so i'm exempt from that. Actually I find that comment rude and offensive, but i can't flag it here :P

and i think pc is going to explode anytime soon
;-)))

Oh i could but i won't lol

@EinsteinsGrandson Non-admins controlling fan speeds... What could possibly go wrong?

@HaydnWVN Honestly? I mean, I'm open for critique but, what part about it is offensive?

the pc is really noisy

1:33 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson Wrap it in blankets

@slhck I was implying the sarcasm was lost, but I got it ;)

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson You can set the computer to use prefer passive cooling in power options
also, you can throttle the CPU in the same place

(I find it rude posting the same verbatim question with all its formatting and spelling errors to all sites where it could be remotely on-topic except for the site where you're question-blocked on.)

Bob
advanced plan settings
I believe non-admins have some access there

1:35 PM
i can't see the passive cooling in power options
it's windows xp
;o)

Bob
oh. give up :P
seriously, why do you care if a fan is a little noisy in a computer lab?

advanced plan settings
?

Bob
yes
power plans and all

i can't work

Bob
XP has some semblance of that

1:36 PM
it's really noisy

Bob
I don't recall throttling settings or anything
if it's that noisy, try switching to another computer
or put some headphones on and listen to music

it's the same with all of them
i have headphones on my ears
and can hear it anyway
;-)))))))))))
;-))))))))))))

Bob
...no offence intended, but I think you might just be overly sensitive to a bit of background noise...

it would be ok

Bob
there's only so much you can do to reduce it (apart from opening the things and cleaning/replacing parts)

1:37 PM
but the frequency of the nosie is changing all the time

I guess the fan's spinning for some reason…

Bob
most would involve CPU throttling
which wouldn't help your computer speed any

@slhck lol

the ps is making a noise when i do a lot of stuff on pc

I'm tempted to flag the flag as offensive

1:38 PM
like if i have 100 windows open in opera

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson well, yes, that's normal

and running other software as well
;-)))))))

@Sathya Haha :D

yo dawg,i herd your flag was offensive, so imma flag your flag, so the flagged flag gets flagged

Bob
if you put any CPU under full load with a stock cooler, it's likely going to get loud
@Sathya can you actually do that? :P

1:39 PM
@Bob na

Bob
aww

i have had this problem for maybe 2 years now
;-)

gonna be fun tho

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson reduce the load or replace the fan with a better one

1:40 PM
;o)

Bob
those are the only real options

@HackToHell adding 'em all to library & downloading later

Bob
if you were to force the fan speed lower, one of two things would happen
automatic throttling, which can slow a computer to a crawl (especially if you're running enough to put it near max)

unfortunately I went over my 100GB FUP limit, so my slow 4Mbps connection is now a grinding 512k

Bob
1:41 PM
or a thermal trip, i.e. a hard shutdown to protect components when they get too hot

i know
;o)
but i would risk it anyway
;o))))))))))))))))))

Bob
you can try running less things
or ask them to upgrade the computers

Bob
or get a new, powerful laptop and use that instead
not sure how powerful those machines are

i have to get the laptop as soon as possible

Bob
1:42 PM
just remember that laptop fans can get quite loud

but the thing is that i don't feel like having 3 kg in my backpack every day
it's annoying
whatever
what if i find some software?

@EinsteinsGrandson you have a parenthesis problem

can i as non-admin run such a software?

Bob
...there's no point in doing so

what is a "parenthesis problem" ?
why, Bob?

Bob
1:44 PM
and the level of hardware access required normally precludes that anyway
seriously, don't bother trying to manually control fan speeds
just close some programs
reduce the CPU load

I have been using the Speedfan for 7 years now on my pc at home

Bob
the fan is spinning up because the alternative is a nonfunctional or, if you're unlucky, dead computer

and nothing happened

Bob
well, your CPU is likely running hotter than optimum, for one
there might be some throttling going on without you realising

what is throttling?
;o)))))))))

Bob
1:46 PM
reducing the max speed
say you have a CPU rated to run up to 2.5GHz
when throttled, the speed it actually runs would be lower
say, 2 GHz

Bob
maybe 1.5, 1 GHz

what's wrong with throttling then?
i don't mind at all

Bob
the amount of processing that can be done is reduced

Bob
1:47 PM
the computer feels slower

i am ok with that

...
buy a slower computer ¬_¬

Bob
at some point, pertty much nothing will be responsive
heat output is reduced, which is the whole point - the alternative is a hard shutdown, if the fan doesn't work
really, just make sure your case has good airflow
perhaps install some additional/replacement quieter fans

Bob
the best solution is to either improve cooling or reduce load (or both). not reduce cooling and force the CPU to throttle itself to prevent damage... which means it wouldn't be able to process the entire load effectively anymore either...
take a look at the task manager
identify which programs are using the (most consistently) greatest % of CPU time
close them if possible
and here comes @allquixotic to prove I know nothing :P

1:52 PM
lol

@allquixotic is God?

@OliverSalzburg, I just flagged this for a migrate to AU, let me know if you have any questions (if you decide to read my flag)
and thanks :)
@Bob I'm actually not at work yet but I'll be leaving soon, not much time

opera_plugin_wrapper uses like 50 to 60 %

Bob
@EinsteinsGrandson you said 100 tabs?

it's because of flash ads on websites right?

Bob
1:54 PM
most likely Java/Flash applets
videos, ads, etc.

yeah
that's it
flash

Bob
:P

> I did not know this one

Bob
you can activate Opera's click to play

apparently people don't know about AU
weird

Bob
1:55 PM
which will disable plugins until you explicitly allow them individually

@allquixotic @jrg actually flagged it as well ;D

Bob
@allquixotic wait a sec, how do you get those images anyway?

1:55 PM
is ubuntu better than win7 / win 8 ?
is it worth it?

Bob
I mean, do you manually copy them?

installing on my pc?

@Bob Type "ask ubuntu.com" without the space or quotes

Bob
o.O

@OliverSalzburg haha he was one who talked to me about migrating it

Bob
1:56 PM
new chat shortcut! :D
well, new to me
@EinsteinsGrandson subjective
very very very very subjective
that's a massive minefield, right there

@EinsteinsGrandson It's free, so, yes

Bob
@OliverSalzburg the time is not free :P
especially if doing dual boot

i have an old ubuntu, something like 10.10.... what about new User Interface instead of old Gnome ?

Bob
and the chat flood protection doesn't like the number of messages I'm sending...
oh yea, thanks @allquixotic

in my opinion, Unity (the "new Ubuntu interface") was terrible until Ubuntu 12.10, when it suddenly became halfway decent

Bob
1:58 PM
for convincing me to get VMware

@EinsteinsGrandson Try Gnome3. People are loving it

Bob
so smooth :P

@Bob you bought a license too? haha, that's TWO sales I've gotten for them... you and Tanner

Bob
xD

Win 8 also has something like Unity right?
Metro ?

Bob
1:59 PM
..
no

@EinsteinsGrandson Metro is nothing like Unity

Bob
completely different

ok
So it's worse?
