12:00 PM
Is on the stage 2 of 5

Bob
ideally, after this you'd be able to do dir D:\ and confirm Windows sits there
Then fix up the BCD and boot

*_________*

Bob
?

51%

Bob
yea, this will take a bit of time
only 60 GB, should be under half an hour

12:03 PM
I hope..
Now is on the stage 3 of 5
But seems freezed
(stage 4 of 5)

Bob
wait, what was stage 4 again?

Again?
No, is the first time that is on the stage 4 :P

Bob
@unNaturhal I mean, I forgot what stage 4 does
If it's verifying file data, that's one of the longest if not the longest step

Ahh
CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)...
78 percent complete (84109 of 447472 files processed)

Bob
yea, that would take a while
you have nowhere near as many files as me :P

12:11 PM
Okok :P

Bob
I used to just leave it running for several hours overnight

@Bob I leaved the lapton backupping all night long.. It's an experience that prefer to avoid :S

Bob
@unNaturhal chkdsk shouldn't take nearly as long :P

@Bob is at 79% of thhe stage 4 of 5, seems really much more faster :p
80%

12:27 PM
o/
good that chkdisk is reading it. may be it gets fixed..

Bob
@Mahesh it's weird, though

jus got back from lab.:D
@Bob wierd as in?

Bob
diskpart reports as RAW. I'm surprised chkdsk even works.

@Mahesh Good morning man! :D

Bob
I'm less surprised ntfsfix failed, probably didn't run it properly :P

12:31 PM
hmm... did you try testdisk?

Bob
@Mahesh That was going to be the next step after chkdsk :P
But since chkdsk seems to be working, hey, why not.

yup. lets hope chkdisk works.
though i dont trust chkdisk anymore.
it returnedafewthousand 1k to 10k fragments when it automatically run on my thumb drive.. that was one of the biggest losses i ever had.
*addspaces where necessary. :P

Bob
uhh
:P

Yay got the booster badge on skeptics thanks to reddit ;) skeptics.stackexchange.com/badges/60/booster?userid=4936

yeah, I rot26 all my documents. I'm paranoid, you know.. :P
points to the starred post

12:39 PM
Two new faces at Root Access ;)

talking ofme/

yeah

uh oh... ineed to practice typing or train my keyboard to be intelligentand use auto correct.

Bob
@Mahesh For more security, use rot52

and add proper spaces, too.

12:41 PM
Chkdisk ends

Bob
@HackToHell ahh, reddit... :P
@unNaturhal :)
check diskpart again...

@Bob Is that a encryption thingy ?

Bob
see if it's still listed as RAW
@HackToHell ahem
it's applying rot13 four times

@Bob The log is very long, but ends with

@HackToHell :P. its doing nothing, or replacing every letter with itself, essentially.

12:42 PM
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.

butyoumay call it encryption, a kind of.

@Mahesh like f7u11
That's nice ;p

Bob
@unNaturhal Yea, ignore that. There's no event log service running in recovery mode

RUN DISKPART!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Bob DISKPART SAYS NTFS!!! NO MORE RAW!!!!

Bob
12:43 PM
:D

yay!!!!!

Bob
@unNaturhal dir D:\
is the Windows folder in there?

From diskpart?

Bob
no, exit diskpart
from the normal command prompt

12:44 PM
Yeah, there is!

Bob
:D
ok

Seems that there are all my directories :D

Bob
first thing to try is reboot, see if it just works

Ok, just a moment :P

Bob
if not, go back to repair mode and see if it can detect the Windows installation and repair automatically

12:45 PM
okay, reboot, andif it doesn't just work, use supergrubdisk i gave youyesterday.

Bob
if it still can't, we can manually readd the boot entry

Ok, reboot failed :P

Bob
@Mahesh won't work
that disk has already set bootmgr as the bootloader, but bootmgr's BCD is corrupted...

okay, go back to recovery. lets fix MBR

Bob
MBR should be fine

12:46 PM
oh.. I get it now..
thesecond windows install screwed up his windows BCD
?

Bob
basically, the Windows bootloader is running but pointing to the wrong partition

yup. so,recovery should fix it automatically.

Bob
@unNaturhal try the automatic repair first, that might work now that the partition exists.

should

Bob
if not, then it's back to the command prompt, and time to use bcdedit
1
Q: How can I repair or install startup repair/system recovery after BCD corruption?

BobHow should I go about repairing startup repair? Installing startup repair onto the hard drive, as if it was not originally there, would also fix this. In the hope that someone at a Windows-specific forum may have an idea, I've also posted this over at Microsoft Answers: http://answers.microsoft...

That was my last time doing this myself :\

12:48 PM
@Bob I'm going in the repair mode

Bob
the automatic repair couldn't find the right partition until I added the entry manually ...

@Bob Do you remember the form that appears as first thing when you click "Repair your computer"?

Bob
@unNaturhal yea

So, it says now:
Windows found problems with your computer's startup options.
Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer?

Bob
yes
at this point it should work :P

12:51 PM
@Bob you got an upboat for all that effort. :D

OHMMYGOD!

Bob
@Mahesh lol thanks

IS STARTING....

Bob
the suspense is killing irritating me :P
what's happening?

Ok, a form appeared
Ask for choose keyboard lang
Now is Searching for problems..
Attempting repairs...

Bob
12:54 PM
huuh
did you boot into startup repair?

Umh?
What do you mean?

Bob
has it rebooted yet?
has it rebooted since you clicked repair and restart?

Yes, it has rebbooted
This things appeared after reboot

Bob
ah

@Bob Yes, and I leaved the dvd to let it boot normally

Bob
12:55 PM
I think you got into startup repair :P
I mean, the one installed on your HDD
this probably isn't entirely necessary but, heh, why not

@Bob ahah okok :P
Wow, this attempting is slow :P
Ok, it ends and is rebooting :S
...
Another time the same form..
@Bob @Mahesh we have a problem...

umm...wats it?

It rebooted, and the same form appears..
It searched
But now failed

1:12 PM
uh... oh.....
no ideawhat to do..

Fine xD

1:33 PM
@Bob ? Help? :s

have you tried bootsect (assuming here booting to windows is failing)?

@soandos No, I haven't...

@unNaturhal that will rerwrite the boot sector
and then to rewrite the mbr, use the fixmbr command

@soandos And I can use it without logging in windows?

both of those are from the recovery console on the disk

1:36 PM
The only thing that I can have access is the prompt of the "repair your computer" section..

thats what I mean

I'm in the prompt, but has something different than the prompt tha i used before
That was

are those commands valid?
(they should be)

Befor the prompt was x:\Sources, now is X:\windows\system32

that makes no difference. Just means you are on a different path
neither of those commands operate on any relative addresses though, so it won't matter.

1:40 PM
Ah ok
@soandos Great :)

Is it just me or is my blog taking forever to load :/ me.hacktohell.org

@soandos Great :)

@HackToHell, 1-2 seconds

@soandos Looks like it's my internet connection then, it took 20seconds to load

@unNaturhal, its bootrec, not bootsect, sorry

1:45 PM
thanks btw

@HackToHell Fine by me! Wait the name is "Random Thoughts". I am "The Randomizer"! Remember? I am the one who can catch people off their guard by asking super random questions here.

@Boris_yo My random thoughts ;)
I like to write them down
I am trying to type and archive them(not there)

@HackToHell I have a sidekick!

lol

The Archiveizer!
Randomizer + Archiveizer = Over 9000!

1:50 PM
@Boris_yo iremember losing abet on randomness with some random person.. not you may be.. butstill..

Sometimes I feel like a sack of turd. What helps the situation is running 3.6 miles.
@Mahesh I have been looking for you.

@HackToHell Tired of what?

@Boris_yo running

@HackToHell What is this about?

hey guys

@HaydnWVN Yey!

@Boris_yo oh.. i gave up on that. i dont remember a single thing about windows anymore.

@HaydnWVN hi hi

@Mahesh I don't know if you're ready to see what I want to show you, but unfortunately you and I have run out of time.

?!?

@Mahesh hows things going/gone with unNaturhal?

Bob
@unNaturhal How's it going? (I just got back)

@HackToHell Yeah but you wrote "Uncertainty". What was that all about? Wait you mean you are tired of uncertainty?

@Mahesh okie
@Bob pokie

@Boris_yo how about me eating you?

2:00 PM
In quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle is any of a variety of mathematical inequalities asserting a fundamental limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position x and momentum p, can be simultaneously known. The more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa. Paraphrase of Heisenberg's uncertainty paper of 1927. The original heuristic argument that such a limit should exist was given by Werner Heisenberg in 1927. A more formal inequality relating the st...

@Boris_yo I am posting random shit

@HackToHell I thought it is not applicable to people.

Bob
2:01 PM
@unNaturhal Ok, let's go manually fix the BCD!
Can you go get into the command prompt again?

@Boris_yo I am uncertain about that

@HackToHell o.0 This is little excuse for not running.

Bob
doesn't matter if it's the installed recovery environment or the one on the DVD

@Bob I'm in the prompt right now, but from what I can see is not the prompt of the dvd, but is the prompt of the partition because is x:\windows\system32

Bob
@unNaturhal that's fine

2:02 PM
(instead, the dvd prompt was x:\sources)

Bob
hm

Bob
bcdedit

It's awesome

@Bob Oh.. well :)

Bob
2:02 PM
@unNaturhal check the output of bcdedit
Does device or osdevice say unknown anywhere?

@Bob Seems to be the help of the command
Wait

@Boris_yo hmm... read, and now, get prepared to be devoured alive.
summons @LordOfTime

Windows Boot Manager

Identifier          <bootmgr>
device               partition=C:

Windows Boot Loader

[...]
osdevice             partition=D:

Bob
@unNaturhal Do you see anything, anywhere, that says unknown?

@HackToHell I am going to do 40 mins run of 3.6 miles in this weather:

2:07 PM
@Bob No, nothing says unknown

@Mahesh Are you a cannibal?

Bob
ok
what identifiers are there?

@Boris_yo You are a fool o.o

@unNaturhal What makes you think that?

@Boris_yo people call me that, who knows?

2:08 PM
@Bob Where?

@Boris_yo Too hot! I can't even stand 30 degrees sat on a beach, nevermind 30+ working/running!

Bob
@unNaturhal bcdedit
each object will have an entry, identifier

@Bob Yes, exactly

Bob
for example, {bootmgr}
how many objects are there, and what are their identifiers?

@HaydnWVN Such weather sucks all the juices from you and makes you loose weight. You get energy and improved mood.

Bob
2:11 PM
@Boris_yo Or extremely irritated/lethargic from dehydration and possibly heat stroke :P

For Windows Boot Manager, identifier is {bootmgr} and for Windows Boot Loader, identifier is {default}

@Boris_yo I sweat like a pig in anything over 28 degrees... And i'm not exactly 'big', i just prefer the colder weather!

Bob
@unNaturhal what are the device, path, osdevice and systemroot entries for {default}?

@HaydnWVN I didn't follow my fitness plan in recent days so this is my punishment. I also sweat like a pig but less after losing 72.8 lbs.

@Bob If you give me a sec I will wrote you down everythhing :P

Bob
2:13 PM
@unNaturhal those three should be all that is needed :P
or a photo if that's easier

@unNaturhal Heres my bcdedit - pastebin.com/DiaCLHgD
as an example

Bob
@HaydnWVN just be careful - there's quite a few differences when in the recovery environment

ah ok, nvm then :P

Bob
and that even depends on which recovery encironment you're in, the HDD or DVD one

@HaydnWVN Thanks, mine is a bit different :P
@Bob Ah ok, just a moment :P
Windows Boot Loader
--------------------
identifier                {default}
device                    partition=D:
path                      \Windows\system32\winload.exe
description               Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)

recoveryenabled           Yes
osdevice                  partition=D:
systemroot                \Windows
@Bob Recovery envirorment? I'm from the prompt that IS NOT on the dvd :P

Bob
2:18 PM
@unNaturhal ok. So, could you do a dir D:\Windows and confirm there's no error (i.e. it can find the folder)?

@Bob It founds a great number of directory and files

Bob
@unNaturhal then.. wait, what was the error message again?
I mean, when you try to boot

@Bob It simply doesnt start.. Appears the screnn with "Starting windows"
But after this, the next screen scearches for error

Bob
oh
wait

It is similar to which one that starts from dvd when I click Repair

Bob
2:21 PM
you're booting straight into the recovery environment
you're skipping the normal boot entirely...
that's... unusual
is there a list of options that lets you choose how to boot? Try hitting F8 repeatedly from power on

@Bob To enter in the bios?

Bob
@unNaturhal no, to enter Windows' advanced startup selection menu

@Bob Ok, so I shut down the laptop, wait
Ok, I'm in the advanced startup section menu

Bob
do you see a normal boot option?

@Bob Yes

Bob
2:26 PM
@unNaturhal try that one

But the first (and autoselected) is "Restore your computer"
@Bob Ok

Bob
@unNaturhal that's what you were seeing
a failure to boot results in an error message; it will not boot into the recovery environment without a reboot
you were booting straight into recovery :\
need to figure that out later - after getting into Windows :P

Damn.. same thing...
Appears the screen with "Starting windows" then the loading bar with "Windows is loading files"
And again the form that ask to choose a keyboard lang

Bob
ok
let's nuke the BCD

The name of the form is System recovery options

Bob
2:29 PM
could you boot off the DVD again, and get back into the command prompt?
going to try rebuilding the BCD from scratch

(i choosed a lang for the keyboard)
(now is "Searching for problems...")

Bob
@unNaturhal just restart

@Bob YYes, I can
Just a moment that I shut it down

@Bob There's something new...
The form that appears after the loading (and pressing "Repair your computer")

Bob
2:36 PM
@unNaturhal ?

Is different

Bob
in what way?

Now have an entry in the central square white space
And is selected the first combobox, not the second

Bob
if you want, you can select it, continue, let it run automatic repairs and restart
that wasn't what I was planning, but BCD nuking is kind of last resort anyway. Might as well give this a shot
oh, and don't forget to go advanced startup/normal boot when you restart

@Bob So you think is bbetter to try with this?

Bob
2:38 PM
yea, it can't hard anything

Okey :)

Bob
worst it can do is mess up the BCD a little more, but if we go with nuking it won't matter

"Searching for problems..."
@Bob Oh xD Okok :P

Bob
ah, Windows boot problems...
it's funny how running the same tool a couple of restarts in a row sometimes works

@Bob It's a sigh? :p
@Bob ahahahah
Is still "Searching for problems.."
"Attempting repairs.."
"Attempting repairs.."

Bob
2:43 PM
lol

Still attempting? ;)

Yeah...

Bob
o.O
ok, that is a little worrying :P

I've never known windows repair a BCD problem, always ended up fixing it manually

Bob
@HaydnWVN funny thing, I fixed mine halfway manually and the automatic repairs did the rest of the work for me :P

2:52 PM
@Bob How I hate the windows status bars...

Bob
but it all depends on what the problem is

Ok, attempt finishhed

Bob
and booting into recovery every time is very weird

Same error of before

Bob
you know what? I just realised we haven't tried safe mode yet
@unNaturhal you want to try safe mode, or just jump into the nuking?

2:53 PM
So? Shut down? xD

@Mahesh you invited me here...?

@Bob Which you think is better :P

Bob
well
how much time do you have? :P

you'll all need to forgive that, i got an invite to here... :/

Bob
trying safe mode will probably take another 5-10 minutes

2:54 PM
@Bob All the day xD

@LordofTime lol

(and also the night)

Bob
@unNaturhal well, why not? advanced boot options => safe mode

@Bob With netword or with prompt?

either, both require windows to load
so either should succeed/fail

Bob
2:57 PM
@unNaturhal normal
I mean, just safe mode
you don't need networking at this point

Ok, is loading :P

@Bob If same mode works after a BCD problem like that, then Networking should too... ;)

OK, I officially hate this damned form..

*same/Safe

It asks to chose the keyboard lang.. again..

Bob
2:59 PM
@unNaturhal did you catch the last thing to load before it switched to recovery (wtf)?

@Bob mmmh
There was a black screen
With the name of some file
