@KronoS I just don't want the blog to become a poor mans alternativeto.net

@soandos that's not the goal. My goal is to give a place that can be HEAVILY moderated for us to recommend software that is often requested.
These posts would be way more detailed, and still on-topic to the blog.SU terms

Q: How do I ask a question that may require recommending software?

KronoSI have a problem that I need solved, and it may require the recommendation of software. How do I ask these type of questions so that they aren't closed?

NOTE TO ALL: I've made the answer CW so that others can add/edit as they feel these types of questions should be handled.
ok time for my flight. Laters all.

@KronoS I like the idea

1 hour later…
1:30 AM
ugh, this really sucks
I am seriously hating on my one source of internet here ;p

@JourneymanGeek What's up?

@OliverSalzburg: Oh, on an internet dongle that somehow manages to be slower than quite a few of my old dialup connections ;p

@JourneymanGeek How slow?

20KBPS if i'm lucky
and it disconnects every so often

@JourneymanGeek Ouch

1:34 AM
did i mention I'm running off batteries since the power is out? ;p

I just bought UltraMon!
It's awesome

XD
I will look at it when i actually get a real multi monitor setup, than a Redundant Array of Obsolete Hardware ;p

I also slightly changed my setup.

pix! ;p

Put the outside screens down a bit

1:39 AM
nice ;p

1 hour later…
2:40 AM
alright guys. i think the x230's gonna be the one

2:54 AM
How bad of an idea is it to swap a gen 1 i7 for a gen 3 i7?
For a laptop

Bob
@unNaturhal Any luck?

3:09 AM
@soandos erm, is that even possible? From a chipset perspective?

@nhinkle that is my question :)

my instinct is "no"
do you know the specific model versions?

1 min
@nhinkle any idea on how I can get the exact processor model though software (windows 8)

@soandos umm I think just pressing Win+Break should take you there

useful shortcut. It just says Core i7
unless Q 720 is the model number?

3:13 AM
huh
oh. yes!

so thats the model number
And for the i7 gen 3, I'll take any that fir :)

is it q720 or q720m?

I don't see an m

@soandos assuming it is indeed a laptop, go here. look at sockets supported. they aren't the same, so you wouldn't be able to swap it out ark.intel.com/compare/64891,43122,66888,59471

that is annoying

Bob
3:19 AM
but not entirely surprising
also, weren't the laptop sockets BGA?

I have no idea
any thoughts on buying a new motherboard and CPU for an old laptop? or is it just not worth it?

Bob
@soandos it's also unlikely that you'd find one that fits
and possibly cheaper to buy a new laptop

@Bob, I have a freaking big laptop, but I see your point

Bob
@soandos Not so much the size; the shape would have to be an exact fit (including ports, etc).

ah, right. Desktops are so much more flexible

Bob
3:24 AM
well, desktops have standard sizes/shapes
and even then some manufacturers don't exactly follow them

true. This whole thing is very annoying
I simply want to get a much faster computer at minimal expense
unfortunately, it does not work that way

@soandos it doesn't sound like it's worth the trouble

@nhinkle thanks

" The Collection had been created/modified by an HP Engineer (adding a wildcard) and the engineer had inadvertently altered the Collection so that it was very similar in form and function to the “All Systems” Collection. The Task Sequence contained automation to – here it comes – format the disks. Yes, the disks of some 9,000 PCs and 490 servers (including domain controllers) were formatted and wiped clean."

DBAN feature

Bob
@paradroid Wait, when was this? o.O

@Bob Just over a week ago

Bob
weird
eh, SMH completely missed it

That must have been the most extreme DBAN in the history of computing.
Have you heard of that bank?

Bob
@paradroid I live in Australia...

3:51 AM
Yeah, I noticed. That's why I asked.

Bob
Ah. It would be rather hard not to hear of that bank here :P

Sounds bad then

Oh geez.
I work with SCCM. That's terrifying.

4:12 AM
@soandos: gen1 and gen3 core i use different sockets

@JourneymanGeek, thanks, nhinkle pointed it out. Its rather disappointing

not counting the motherboard thing

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Do you know what kind of packaging they use?

@Bob: for laptops, no
for desktops, first and second generation was LGA 1156, third generation and 4th generation are LGA1155
they use LGA for those
(apologies for slow replies, I have having massive issues due to the slowness of my interwebs)
hmm
@Bob: interestingly the mobile chips all use the same sockets
is incorrect in this case ;p

4:31 AM
@nhinkle WTH is sccm?
this?
System Center Configuration Manager (CM12 or CM07 or ConfigMgr or Configuration Manager), formerly Systems Management Server (SMS), is a systems management software product by Microsoft for managing large groups of Windows-based computer systems. Configuration Manager provides remote control, patch management, software distribution, operating system deployment, network access protection, and hardware and software inventory. There have been three major iterations of SMS. The 1.x versions of the product defined the scope of control of the management server (the site) in terms of the NT d...

@Sathya it is a Microsoft management tool for software distribution etc

:5685596 that's.. sscm?

You can do pretty much anything with it that you can do sitting at the machine

@Sathya mistyped, sorry
guess its time for bed, night all

@Paul ah

Bob
4:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek I remember the older mobile processors (P4?) used BGA. Don't know if the current ones still do. Replacing a BGA chip/package is not something most can do at home...

@soandos what did you provide for offline documents?

Bob
That forced retirement question on MSO broke -100 :P

@Bob Party time!

1 hour later…
6:06 AM
This might be the silliest use of vba I have ever seen:

Q: How do I add a new line between each of the text files in this Microsoft Excel macro code?

Help please' Start Code Declare Function OpenProcess Lib "kernel32" _ (ByVal dwDesiredAccess As Long, _ ByVal bInheritHandle As Long, _ ByVal dwProcessId As Long) As Long Declare Function GetExitCodeProcess Lib "kerne...

You give the script a folder containing csv files, and it writes a batch file to concatenate them, then runs the batch file, then opens and saves the resulting file as xls.

Bob
7:00 AM
@Paul You sure that didn't come out of TDWTF?

@Bob Perhaps I should submit it?

Bob
@Paul Might as well :P
@Paul The crazy thing is, it actually makes a little sense...

@Bob, yes you are right, it is crazy and makes little sense
(I hope I read you right :p )

Bob
A VBA macro is certainly an easy way to save an arbitrary CSV formatted file as an Excel workbook automatically... the rest of it, however...
@Paul I meant it makes some sense :P
I actually can't think of a command line approach of the top of my head to get Excel to convert between formats

excel.exe file.csv would open the file, then Save As. I realise humans must get involved, but they have to anyway with the macro

Bob
7:09 AM
true :P

7:20 AM
Hi guys, can you tell me if web browsers have some row limit for viewing data from database? I am trying to view data from one BOINC project and it looks like I only get a small portion of the data.

Bob
@Juhele Browsers themselves can't view a database. It therefore depends on how the data is read/sent (PHP script? I admit I have no idea what BOINC is)
This would also depend on which browser, and whether it's hit a memory limit.

@Bob Hi, Firefox, MSIE and Maxthon - always the same. The link is radioactiveathome.org/boinc/gettrickledata.php and boinc is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

Bob
@Juhele Can you confirm the 5001st (last) line is 45039168,2151,15,2012-06-29 14:30:25,58.149014,7.992936,0.660,n,0,594?

@Bob: yes, you are right. According to the admin, the database should contain data 31 days back.

@Juhele it is almost certainly a transfer limit on the webserver. Or do they think it only happens to you? You could try using wget, and wget resume wget -c to continue where you left off.

Bob
7:28 AM
@Juhele Considering the nice round number of 5001, and the fact that it's a whole line (it's plain text; length limitations are much more likely to truncate halfway through a line and don't care about line breaks), it's likely something on the server script side.
@Paul A transfer limit would be more likely to cut it at some point other than a line break, normally...

Thanks for hints, it led me to read again the whole thread: radioactiveathome.org/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=60 and I finally was able to view also other data. For example using radioactiveathome.org/boinc/gettrickledata.php?start=58324018 shows the last samples.
However, do you have any idea how to download it all? I need to convert the data into GIS shapefile format for further processing.

Bob
@Juhele As @Paul suggested, try wget. You can script it to grab increments of 5000 and append, until it receives NO DATA...

Bob
7:52 AM
oh hi @jokerdino

hi~
This chat room is one of my pinned tabs. So, it just autologins. :-)

Bob
lol

@Bob Ok, will try wget. :-)

Bob
@Juhele You're on Windows, right?

Have both - Win7 64bit on this machine and linux on laptop :-)

Bob
7:58 AM
ah

8:39 AM
@Bob they definately use PGA now, my confusion was between whether they were PGA or LGA

9:14 AM
Good morning guys!

Heh, I am going off for a while to play soccer. See ya laterz.

Good game :p

9:33 AM
@unNaturhal What game?

Bob
@unNaturhal Morning! Evening here, actually! How is your recovery going?
Here's a BGA i5 mobile Sandy Bridge
In fact, it looks like every mobile core i3/5/7 has a BGA option except one, and quite a few don't have a PGA option. Specifically, the ultra low power ones (I wonder why...)

9:53 AM
Hi @Bob! :) How are you? My recovery.. mmh.. is going :p This morning (3 hours ago) it finished to backup the partition (anche the backup.img is 3GB greather than the entire partition o.o) and now I'm waiting to know how to do..
@Boris_yo Soccer is a game o.o

Bob
@unNaturhal it should be exactly the same size...

@Bob So we have another strangeness :p

Bob
Of course, it depends on how you represent bytes. if you use 1024 bytes = kb, 1024 kb = mb, 1024 mb = gb you'll get about 64GB
if you use 1000 instead, you get 60 GB
@unNaturhal ok
next thing to try is fsck on the disk...
hmm
do we have anyone here familiar with fsck? :P

Mmmh.. so also windows used 1000 instead of 1024, 'coz on windows it was exactly 60.0GB

Bob
likely
I remember your fdisk -l showed something like 64GB

9:57 AM
@Bob Ah okok, in fact it is 64.4GB

Bob
ok

Don't care that a bit more than a GB in the partition was empty right?

Bob
that's fine
do you want to try fsck first or chkdsk first?

@Bob I really don't know...

Bob
If anything goes wrong, you'll probably have to spend all day restoring the partition

9:59 AM
.......................

Bob
I mean, however long dd takes to run

More than 54333 seconds....

Bob
ok
actually
does Lubuntu have ntfsfix?

I don't know
How I can verify?

Bob
Try it
just run something like ntfsfix --help

10:01 AM
lberto@alberto-Presario-CQ62-Notebook-PC:~$ ntfsfix --help
ntfsfix v2.0.0 (libntfs 10:0:0)

Usage: ntfsfix [options] device
    Attempt to fix an NTFS partition.

    -h, --help             Display this help
    -V, --version          Display version information

For example: ntfsfix /dev/hda6

Developers' email address: linux-ntfs-dev@lists.sf.net
Linux NTFS homepage: linux-ntfs.org
alberto@alberto-Presario-CQ62-Notebook-PC:~$

Bob
huh
different from the one in Kubuntu 11.10! :P

This is Lubuntu.. mmh.. wait, I take the cd xD

Bob
anyway
just run it on your Windows partition
I think it was /dev/sda2, but you should make sure

Lubuntu 10.10
I backed up the partition /dev/sda2
So I reasonably sure that is this :p

Bob
If it's the 60GB one, that should be right
:P
just run it

10:04 AM
Yes :P
The command fdisk -l to verify doesn't work o.o
Ah ok, it need sudo
Ok, I confirm, it's /dev/sda2

Bob
ntfsfix /dev/sda2

ntfsfix /dev/sda2

Bob
see what it says

alberto@alberto-Presario-CQ62-Notebook-PC:~$ ntfsfix /dev/sda2

alberto@alberto-Presario-CQ62-Notebook-PC:~$

linux users here today?

10:06 AM
It maybe needs a sudo?

Bob
@unNaturhal Probably.
@ShyamK @jokerdino just went out
@Mahesh might be here?

@Bob Nothing...
alberto@alberto-Presario-CQ62-Notebook-PC:~$ sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda2

Bob
wait
they want a hda o.O
wait a sec

@unNaturhal There are countless FIFAs!

hda? what is it?

10:08 AM
The only good thing about this song is chorus:

@Bob hmm.. k.. :(

Bob
@unNaturhal never mind

@ShyamK Aren't you Manesh?

@Boris_yo Yeah, but maybe he mean soccer, with a ball, two teams, a green field xD

@Boris_yo LOL no....
@Boris_yo hence the name shyamk :P duh!!!

10:10 AM
@unNaturhal FIFA is not soccer? Soccer = football

@Boris_yo FIFA is a soccer VIDEOGAME u.u

@ShyamK But I called you yesterday in regards to renting room in your apartment Manesh. How come you now have different name? I thought we had a deal man!
@unNaturhal In GEEKS world the correct term would then be "offline soccer".

@Boris_yo o.o

Bob
@unNaturhal ok, may as well give chkdsk a shot before moving on to testdisk

@Bob Umh?

Bob
10:13 AM
could you boot into the Windows repair DVD and get back to the command prompt?

@Bob Yes, I should be able..

@Boris_yo I am not the one you called.. You have me mistaken for someone else.. Your deal with Manesh is something I was not aware of until you mentioned it..

@ShyamK No problemos

:D

@ShyamK How's your internet speed today?

10:16 AM
? as usual.. its slow.. but then again.. it always was.. this slow..

Many people complained yesterday. I think India is undergoing internet maintenance.

@Bob I don't understand what I have to do :p

@ShyamK What is you monthly package?

maybe.. India blocks alot of sites.. at times I couldn't access pastebin.. sometimes mediafire..
@Boris_yo but thats an on-off thing
@Boris_yo monthly package? internet? don't know.. At the office right now.. so I don't really know their package
don't need to know too :D

Bob
10:31 AM
uhh
@unNaturhal that command prompt from yesterday
"repair your computer"
it won't find an OS
click next
cancel the repair operation
open the command prompt in the additional options
I'll be back in 10-15 mins

Ah, I have to give a chkdsk from windows command in the repair section?

Bob
10:45 AM
@unNaturhal Yes. Once in the prompt, use diskpart with list volume to get the letter
and run chkdsk /R /X <letter>:
I don't think it will run on a "RAW" partition, but it's worth a try
if it works, great, we can go restore the bootloader
if not, then go back to Linux and try testdisk. That should at least recover the data, if not a bootable OS.

11:07 AM
@ShyamK What is your speed at home?

11:37 AM
@Bob i am back!

Bob
@jokerdino Perhaps you can help @ShyamK? :P

@Bob heh he is talking about servery stuff. :/

Bob
lol

@Bob ya I had found him on ask ubuntu general room.. thanks for that :D

11:55 AM
@Bob Hey.. sorry.. I have had lunch :/

Bob
@unNaturhal no prob :P
could you get the repair command prompt open?

I'm in the prompt right now

Bob
ah
does diskpart still say D: is RAW and 60GB?

Yes :/

Bob
try chkdsk /R /X D:

11:57 AM
Out of diskpart right?

Bob
uhm, exit diskpart
just type exit

Ok got it
I verifying file
Now is verifying indexes
(the problem now is: how I will give you the output?...)

Bob
don't need to
just the final message, errors, success, etc :P
but the fact that it can read the partition at all is a good sign

Ah ok :P
