5:00 AM
Goodbye games, hello real life. Time to install Fedora. \o/

Bob
Heh, trying to answer this one
I finally learned to use Process Monitor and found a packageRepository.edb
now, I just hope it's not some proprietary format :P

process monitor is the shit

Bob
TrID time

(I'm prolly not editing it, anyone looking for a edit-tile?)
lol. some of my favourite in case tools ;p

Bob
There's an edit tile?

5:02 AM
ya, 10 edits

Bob
@JourneymanGeek is that good enough to keep it? :P

Does need work ;p
I'm torn tho. strictly speaking thats too localised

Bob
China is a special case for Win8, though

but its a useful question
oh?

Bob
Windows 8 has four editions, each with varying feature sets. Editions ; :Windows 8 is the basic edition of Windows for the x86 and x86-64 architectures. This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment and provides all of the basic new Windows 8 features including the Start screen with semantic zoom, live tiles, Windows Store, Internet Explorer 10, connected standby, Microsoft account integration, the Windows desktop and more. ; :Windows 8 Pro is comparable to Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate and is targeted towards enthusiasts and business users; it includes all the f...
There's a special version of Windows for China
Cheaper than others, but Chinese only
> It will be offered at relatively low price in an attempt to curb rampant software piracy in China.

5:07 AM
ahh

Bob
hm

I donno. I can't imagine using windows in a language I don't understand ;p

Bob
might change the question again, actually
'can a global copy of Windows 8 be activated in china?'

I think its fine as is

Bob
and mention there's a Chinese only version

5:09 AM
why not use comments here?

Bob
good point

"The edits are so that the question is less localised, I'd note thought that china has its own edition LINK" or something

Bob
I've edited the question to be a little less localised, but do note that China is a special case, as there is a Windows for China that is Chinese only, and cheaper than the international version. This may be the one you are referring to. As far as I know, the international version should be installable in China. — Bob 1 min ago
How's that?
@JourneymanGeek The only question is more SFey anyway :P

I see 13 ;p
I just edited out one

Bob
what
oh, I'm on the unanswered tab
:\
yay, TrID has no idea what PackageRepository.edb is :P

5:15 AM
lol

Bob
Ok, during installation it's extracted into a temp directory and then deleted
Great, gotta prevent deletion.. hmm..

:p
hi..all

Bob
Let's mess around with ACLs
... I removed delete permissions, they still disappeared :\

Clean reinstall of windows 8 is working on desktop. Lost hundreds of hours of work installing programs, activating, downloading games, save games, etc. But no critical data
lappy seems like it might successfully upgrade without losing any data

5:43 AM
Still hating redmond

Bob
urk
some friendly advice, especially for you @allquixotic
do not end msiexec.exe while uninstalling a Windows Store app
I just broke it :P
well, time for a 'refresh' :\
Some files are missing?!
headbang

Bob
Win7 was so much more robust...
This is like Vista all over again :\

we weren't poking around things that weren't quite meant to be poked around in 7 ;p

Bob
5:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've poked around a fair bit there
Ok, I'm back to the Win8 bootloader somehow :\
also, "There was a problem refreshing your PC"
Well isn't that helpful

now that I find confusing

Bob
!@#$
great. now I have a broken store.
only one thing to do... reinstall! -_-
I'll see you on the other end
there needs to be some way to reset the store :\
refresh keeps the store but resets everything else
not helping

lol

Bob
ok, I am not gonna risk a reset. with my luck, it's gonna wipe my other drives too
time to start with a clean Win8 image
wow, Win8 copies large files at least twice as fast :\
Heh, back to the Win7 bootloader
I swear it's just alternating :\

6:14 AM
lol
that is just plain wierd behaviour

Bob
actually
I get the feeling a clean boot is from the Win7 loader
and a 'bypass DVD' boot is from the Win8 one
mah, it works for now
let's hope my backup vhd doesn't need another bcdboot

Have you tested this process? When I set any other browser as default, the currently running Modern UI browser is automatically closed. — Bob 3 hours ago
Sorcery... o_O

Bob
lol
MS really doesn't want multiple MUI browsers :S

Well, it's a matter of writing a hook that gives each process the default browser from the point they have started back. Such that none close because they all think they are the default.
Perhaps no need for a script if it's somehow possible to make the process believe it's the default right from the start.
Also might be a problem to go injecting DLLs into Metro processes on 64 bit...

Bob
I think it's Windows that's forcibly closing the apps, not the apps themselves querying the default.
Though this might not affect directly assigning the default (registry setting?); it might be something to do with Windows' default selection dialogue...

6:29 AM
@Bob: Dunno, I really feel like it's something polling, one could verify using Process Monitor.
I don't think they would implement this behavior right into the Windows API, so it's probably somewhere in either the Metro interface (the shell / library / runtime) as I'd suppose it's not the browser itself doing it.
But well, you can subscribe to registry I/O events and that's what I suppose Metro is doing...

Bob
Wow. Did explorer just crash when attempting to search?!
Yay for stability, anyone? :\

looks like you're running into some serious hardware issues/incompatibility?

6:46 AM
Bob has new avatar so congratz to him.
I wonder how did commenter stylized his username:
Must have something to do with ASCII coding?
I saw same thing people do on YouTube and they even can draw stuff.

Bob
7:20 AM
there we go

7:36 AM
congrats @georgeduckett on being the second person to hit level 4
3

@Sathya Thanks! (You noticed that quick!)

;)
also, welcome to Root access

hmm, release is today?
* is noticing a lot of licence related questions*
@GeorgeDuckett: congrats

@JourneymanGeek yep

@JourneymanGeek thanks!
Still getting the hang of the tone of this site compared to SO (as people might have noticed!) hopefully future answers/questions will be better!

7:46 AM
@GeorgeDuckett what difference have you noticed?
(wrt tone)

well maybe not tone, but the need ease off of opinions and back things up with facts

@GeorgeDuckett: probably the nature of what we're working with I guess

yeah, think I just took comments the wrong way at the time

(however, the red freeline circle is used here as well)

@JourneymanGeek heh, glad to see. (I admit that i didn't freehand a recent question though)!

7:48 AM
I personally don't use em ;p

Q: Desktop preview on start screen tile

George DuckettIs it possible to display a preview of the desktop on the desktop tile, like you get when switching to it?

If i have time, I tend to 'darken' the areas not of interest. I also use arrows off paint.net ;p

I really should start using that instead of mspaint

Oh, the moment you get used to nice things like layers, you can't go back

yeah, I use GIMP a bit, but I find it a bit much when i'm just cropping a screenshot

Bob
7:59 AM
Layers? Bleh.

what are the and tags? I shudder at the mention of "clippy"

Bob
For screenshots, I prefer vector based programs, or at least something that keeps every drawn arrow as an individual object (without needing to create a layer) :P

@GeorgeDuckett 's a little easter egg ;)

hmm, not sure i can crack it (haha, get it?) they 404 when i follow them

@GeorgeDuckett see if you can summon clippy ;) chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=clippy&room=118

Q: Can I purchase the Windows 8 upgrade and install it on another PC?

UsmanI want to upgrade to Windows 8. My one friend bought a new PC some days ago. He is not interested in windows 8 upgrade. Can I use his system details to upgrade to Windows 8 in 14.99$ on my PC which was bought two years ago.

this can be made to a community faq for all Win 8 upgrade scenarios

A: Pick an easter egg for chat.superuser!

Sathyavia @balpha: how about this: When the message matches /^how (?:can|do) I (.+)\?/i, a talking paper clip appears with a speech bubble saying "It looks like you're trying to \1. Do you want some help?" and a link to SU ala from: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2007/11/dont-forget-to-lock-...

8:22 AM
how do i summon clippy?
hehe

Bob
So, which smartarse at MS decided it would be a good idea to offer upgrades only?

8:34 AM
@Bob: actually I did find it a little odd that they merged retail into the system builder edition and not vice versa
ok, I'm confused. Does the minimum edit char limit get turned off at one point?
just made a one char edit. Not that it matters other than it was bothered me

If the edits aren't reviewed (because of high rep) they get through fine.

There's also, if I recall an automated system to prevent edits less than a certain character count.

Oh ok, not sure I've ever seen it and I sometimes correct small things (possibly mostly my own posts though).

8:50 AM
Own posts are fine

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, mass confusion. Not fun.
Not sure why they're pushing the upgrade that heavily...

@Bob: prolly cause they want to keep the OEMs happy ;p

Bob
I imagine they might do better targeting users of, say, OS X, especially with such a massive interface change

What i really don't get is...
why didn't the take the opportunity to have proper virtual desktops in windows...
;p
and that

Bob
huh
Firefox Nightly just opened a PDF.
With no plugins installed.
What the hell..
Apparently it's been there since FF 14 o.O

9:00 AM
lol

9:20 AM
thats rather.. odd.. packaging for windows 8

Bob
Ok, MS, wtf are you doing with the Messaging app?!

what's wrong with it, other than not supporting jabber? ;p

Bob

Q: How do I use the Messaging app with an account different from my primary Microsoft account?

BobI set up this computer with a Local account. I have linked it to my 'primary' Microsoft account - which is used in the Mail and Store apps. There are no other accounts linked at this time. I wish to use the Messaging app with a different Microsoft account. However, Add an account only lets me a...

@JourneymanGeek lol o.O

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...You could guess Japan just by the box art :\

Q: Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade with Slow Internet connection

Kumar PI have Windows 7 on my laptop, and have promo code for upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8 too. I have limited download usage with my 2G mobile Internet. Advice me for upgrade with these resources ?

not sure if I should go back to kubuntu or try something new
@Sathya: RFC 1149
that would solve his problem

LOL. I knew that would come up :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Be more subtle... reference the RFC number :P

oh hey @kronos congrats on 10k :-) finally you get to see the underbelly of Super User & imma bet you'd not want to see that :P
6

9:33 AM
wierd, I have an unupvote, and an upvote. I wonder if someone just worked out they could do that ;p
@Sathya: 3k is where its at ;p

:P

(though, I do like being able to protect questions)

Bob
Nightly Firefox is being surprisingly stable :S

wut

Bob
I honestly expected a crash by now

9:44 AM
@Sathya, There are some more possible way too... I can buy Windows 8 with slow connection and can download it by some links. I know well there is way to make installation media during my upgrade... Just asked here to know possibilities of other way.... I never come back to super user... Waste of Time... — Kumar P 1 min ago

It doesn't crash but freezes for me.

don't let the door hit you on your way out.

He will be missed. :P

I'm really tempted to put that comment.
but alas.

ya, we're supposed to be nice to people

9:47 AM
yeah.

Hey, it's no summer out here.

(but then again, can't hurt to get to know the community, warm fuzziness is a two way street!)

yeah, not for us northern(hemisphere)ers.

yeah. We're end-of-monsoons, start of winter here.
you know what WInter is phamous for?
COLD
HARSH COLD TRUTHHHHHHHHHHH

dratted real life

imma be back later. ciao

cya

Bob
@Sathya I like cold
Cold => you can warm up

9:54 AM
This is the last annoying question I ask:
Does this method work if I use a Windows 7 CD (because I'd like some upgrading)? http://lifehacker.com/157578/geek-to-live--how-to-format-your-hard-drive-and-install-windows-xp-from-scratch

Bob
Hot => uhm... :\

@Bob I see what you are looking for.

Bob
@jokerdino No double entendre intended.

My WinXP is corrupted so can I use a Win7 disk?

Bob
@WannabeMiniMathematician If you wanted to install Win7 on it, sure.

9:55 AM
@Bob I'll take your word for that.

Bob
(you also need a Win7 key)

@WannabeMiniMathematician: yes, you can install a new os from scratch, which is very much what that is.

Q: What version(s) of the .NET framework are included in windows 8?

George DuckettIf I install windows 8 what version(s) of the .NET framework will be installed before any auto-updating? What about after applying any automatic updates?

@JourneymanGeek: How about the drivers?
If I format it, then the drivers will be gone.

10:05 AM
Then I guess I'd just send my system to some engineer. -.-

Bob
Windows works to an extent with the default drivers. Most others you can download from the manufacturer's website anyway.
o.O
Correct! :-) This is really the error message when you run the Windows 8 Installer already on a Windows 8! Nice error message though! — FiveO 1 min ago

^ that
one moment, having minon shot.
... thats amusing...
and it works in compat mode?

Bob
Why did you forget to say you were doing it in windows 8? and why did you run windows 8 upgrade in windows 8? It is already windows 8? — ppumkin 7 mins ago
That is a very good question.
@JourneymanGeek you're going to run out soon at this rate

@Bob: prolly

2 hours later…
12:24 PM
Ah, the ex4 corruption bug...
> Update: It now looks like the reproduction involved something very esoteric indeed, involving using umount -l and shutdowns while the file system was still being unmounted --- and the user had nobarrier specified in the mount options as well.
