Q: Windows 8 isn't available for download

FiveOJust downloaded the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and only got the following message: "Windows 8 isn't available for download", "Sorry, Windows 8 isn't available for online purchase in the country/region you're in." I which region is then a download available? (I'm in Switzerland)

I feel like this question could use some... help.

@JourneymanGeek is there a "guide" (meta question, 10k only page, or something) that describes how 10k+ users should handle flags and what not?

@KronoS Only you can decide how to wield your new super cow powers ;P

you just handle it based on your judgement

lol. ok well how do we handle close vote flags?
I VTC'd but is it kosher to also flag it as well, if we agree?

2:16 PM
Grats on 10k rep :P
I stopped bothering with the flags long time ago.

@jokerdino gracias...

hmm, you arn't directly flagging
you're agreeing with the flag to push it up the mod queue, as I understand it
so, do both

ok... that was my second question... is it considered a direct flag? which you just answered
Finally, now that I can VTD, should I flag to delete as well?

In general? I do believe so
though usually I do it in the other order

Is thinking that getting that Marshall badge is going to be a lot more tougher now that he has more responsibility

2:18 PM
flag, downvote, wait, then VTD
lol
@KronoS: MOST of my flags were spam or NAAs

@JourneymanGeek same here

can be done. It just takes a while

I am a long way from 2k flags.

also, marshal badge is a mixed thing

so you're saying to flag & downvote first
then VTD

2:19 PM
ya

@jokerdino it's 500

you DO need -3 on a answer to VTD right?

@JourneymanGeek I think so... but I'm not for sure

@KronoS It's still far away.

least thats how I do it

2:20 PM
i am yet to hit 100.

and if you muck up something, the mods will tell you ;p

A: Is there a windows 8 equivalent of 'Recent Items'/'My Recent Documents'?

avirkYes, there is a way to do this: Just open the run dialog box by pressing the key combination Win + R and type in "recent". There you can see your recent activities. Note: "Recent places" can be access under windows explorer's under "Favorite". Also you can create a shortcut of the "recent" ...

is one of those folks who got asked not to flag to close, since i kept forgetting i could VTC when i got 3K ;p

@JourneymanGeek check that out :P

sigh
didn't we have a talk about this?

2:21 PM
lol ya I know... I guess -3 isn't the cap...

@JourneymanGeek updated :)

naw, I mean bringing up questions all the time asking for upvotes
least have some context, ktx

@JourneymanGeek na :P

Downvoted.

I know you have done that :P

2:22 PM
@avirk: very rarely

@jokerdino your wish

and more often cause the question was interesting

Q: What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i?

avirkI have seen many times resolution of 1080p and I know that mean 1080 pixels but sometime I also seen option on the HDTV is 1080i. So I want to know the exact difference between them and is 1080i video quality available for the laptop too? I some Googled and got there are some time 1080P rather...

If you really want, I can spare you a downvote.

my hot question

2:23 PM
@avirk Wow I actually read that one before I joined SU.

@KronoS: I'd say, go with your gut. the extra rep-powers don't actually change much

@JourneymanGeek that's whenever I post posts here in chat

precisely ;p

@r.tanner.f today some one answer very clear, now I'm in dowbt to toggle the answer :P

@avirk if you're not careful, the system may actually remove some of your rep due to gaming

2:25 PM
@KronoS Really?

@KronoS what kind of gaming?

@r.tanner.f if the system detects gaming it will remove the rep
@avirk users mass voting on each others questions

@avirk: if that was common knowledge, people would game it.

I just thought it did sequential votes. Is it a little more intelligent than that?

@JourneymanGeek exactly... nobody really know what's in the algorithms

2:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek I never did that :)

@r.tanner.f: and patterns
You guys remember the indonesians?

@JourneymanGeek Nice.

In AU the other week, the mods wiped out about 3k rep.

you see @avirk this post is worth posting here becuase it's freakin awesome (and I'm hoping that he'll blog about it)

A: What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i?

rspI see some serious inaccuracies in the answers and comments here, even in some highly-voted answers that provide otherwise some good information, so I think that some clarification is needed. The question is specifically: What is the difference between 1080p and 1080i? so I will start by outlini...

... wow
does he even need to do any work to blogifify it?
or that DNA question

2:29 PM
@KronoS that's what I was talking about that now may be I have to toggle the answer to accept :

I loved that
@avirk: nothing wrong with that

@avirk basically, if I would tweet it, that's when I post something in here

wtf why is windows 8 scared of gimp?

lol
'scared of' ?
(that said, G+ is a great way to self promote posts)
though, thats boring.

@JourneymanGeek not really, but I would like him to go further into the technologies...
crap... I forgot how to do tags in markdown

2:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek @KronoS I'm looking what the feature's have added and revomed in WIn8 over Win7?

[tag:goo]?

@JourneymanGeek that's what I thought... but it no worky

@JourneymanGeek Big 'Smart Screen' banner warning me that GIMP is hella dangerous :P

oh wait... that's right now spaces in the tag
lol

2:34 PM
lol

off to clean my cage!
see ya all later :P

Q: How should be approach Windows 8 Store apps tags?

KronoSThere are times where users have specific question about specific apps within Windows 8. How should we tag these specific questions? I propose we do the following: Have a general windows-8-store-app: This deals with any/all apps that can be found withing the windows-8-store Have specific tag...

I think that this needs to be addressed pretty soon, since Win 8 is release today

I should really learn to submit using the share link, I probably should have earned a bunch of extra badges :(

lol
I only learnt about that last week ;p

@IvoFlipse lol

2:42 PM
Isn't there a tile for it even?

yup
50 referrals

Well its not a windows 8 question anyway

was tempted to post it on fb/some other places to see if i could get it but decided naw

@KronoS windows-8-store sounds fine doesn't it?

@IvoFlipse seems good suggestion. Why don't make an answer of it?

2:48 PM
Because it feels like a non-issue, at least from the current wording
Though perhaps, why not just tag it windows-8 and mention Store in the title + body?

@ivoflipse I think there enough distinction between desktop and "metro" that separate tags are worth considering.

Aren't apps in the store supposed to be compatible with both systems?

no
a good example would be cut the rope

@IvoFlipse thats' make sense but tag has its own place.

someone remind me why it has to be different from existing system?

2:52 PM
I guess if a question is tagged windows-8-rt (blegh) or windows-8, that should make the difference clear enough
no need to make a distinction between the apps too
Because a lot of UI features are exactly the same
And what do you do when a question asks about both stores? add both tags?
Then again, I hate tags, so don't ask me

@IvoFlipse: Windows-RT and windows-8
there's no 8 in the arm windows build

The App Store is still the same though? And I thought the apps were the same as well.

Btw upgrading from Release Preview went pretty well, hadn't even realized Office got migrated, but even my explorer settings were kept intact (Except for network drives)

same apps store, same apps.
mostly

A: Windows 8 isn't available for download

Tom WijsmanWhile you might be able to trick it into doing the upgrade, you really shouldn't... Previews are not meant to be used by end customers (you can, but stability isn't guaranteed) and thus will not provide upgrade paths like those for end customers. It doesn't even make sense to introduce an upgrad...

2:55 PM
but we wouldn't have different tags for firefox on linux and windows would we?

@TomWijsman I didn't do anything, just used the installer from Microsoft.com

@IvoFlipse Without compatibility trick? Hmmz, weird, might be that one has an upgrade path.

I wonder if my computer will still randomly wake from sleep mode

2:57 PM
DP and CP probably don't

I always thought it was my mouse

@TomWijsman Well it didn't keep my other apps, really strange

@journeymangeek no we wouldn't but this is different IMO.

@KronoS: I don't see how
we'd have all the essential info in the question itself

@IvoFlipse: Try something like powercfg /query wake_armed, I'm not sure if it's the right syntax or right command but you can inspect what can possible wake up the computer there, a full list of options can be seen with powercfg /? and you might find some other interesting query there wrt the problem.

2:58 PM
" I'm running yoyodine nuclear reactor simulator (modern UI edition) on a windows RT tablet"

@IvoFlipse Well yeah, that's a clean install.

@TomWijsman Well I haven't put my computer in sleep mode yet after upgrading

That question was about an upgrade, which usually means you keep files/settings/... all in place without moving it to a secondary Windows folder.

I was planning on asking, but first need to see if it happens again

a windows RT tag and a Yoyodyne-Nuclear-Reactor-Simulator tag

2:59 PM
@TomWijsman I have the windows.old

Well, now you know what to do if it reoccurs.
Yeah, don't think the Windows.old is an upgrade.

Waiting a moment before deleting it outright, though I don't want to go back

if its on windows 8 x86 then its just

@TomWijsman It feels like an upgrade to me ;P

Upgrade of version yes, but for the rest, doubt it... :D

3:00 PM
a windows 8 tag and a Yoyodyne-Nuclear-Reactor-Simulator tag

@TomWijsman Keep that answer in mind if I have it tomorrow :P

@IvoFlipse: Well, we can attempt to see whether we can fix it in your ACPI DSDT if the simple approach doesn't work. o_O
(Been playing around with that, was fixing some ACPI related warnings and errors in my kernel log on Gentoo by making a custom DSDT table)
[ 0.000000] ACPI: Override [DSDT-CALPELLA], this is unsafe: tainting kernel

Yeah, server error here.

Meeh, just wanted to finish an exam, so I can write off another course :P

3:08 PM
One day we can call you Wise Mr. IVo Flipse.

@TomWijsman I might get off my mountain then

[ 0.190000] ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, transactions will use polling mode.
[    0.470000] ACPI Warning: 0x0000000000001840-0x000000000000185f SystemIO conflicts with Region \_SB_.PCI0.SBUS.SMBI 1 (20120711/utaddress-251)
[ 0.470000] ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver
Still need to fix these.

What did you do to cause this anyway>

The latter (two lines) is just a warning which means either of the two trying to use that part of memory has been disabled so the other one can do the job, it's to prevent them both acting on the same memory.
The former is hardware flooding the kernel, so it disables the event interrupts and polls them instead to only get the valuable ones.
Nothing, just cleaning out warnings / errors out of my kernel log.
Former probably involves raising ACPI debugging so I can see which General Purpose Event (GPE) it is flooding with so I can get an idea of what the hardware is doing wrong.
I'm taking the assumption it has to do with my power circuit, which made two batteries die already. :P
Apr 9 '11 at 22:50, by Tom Wijsman
@Isxek: That's an acpi.sys spike to 100% every 15 seconds, just weird...
^ GPE storm. :P
Anyhow, anything I do and learn now is valuable as I can check out whether a given computer has a low level bug and buy a new laptop / computer in a more educated way and / or attempt to fix it.
If I understood correctly from what I saw this works on Windows too, btw...
Or I could attempt to tune
/usr/src/linux/drivers/acpi/ec.c:#define ACPI_EC_STORM_THRESHOLD 8      /* number of false interrupts
/usr/src/linux/drivers/acpi/ec.c-                                          per one transaction */
From some patch:
> ACPI_EC_STORM_THRESHOLD was initially 20 when it's created, and was changed to 8 in 2.6.28 commit 06cf7d3c7 "ACPI: EC: lower interrupt storm threshold" to fix kernel bug 11892 by forcing the laptop in that bug to work in polling mode. However in bug 45151, it works fine in interrupt mode if we lift the threshold back to 20.

Q: Best Linux Distro for C++ Programming? (Cross-Platform)

Joe AndersonI was wondering what's the best linux distro for me. I am a c++ programmer who creates software and games. I would need to target both platforms (Unix and Windows) and I would need it to be fast. I work in Vim and the terminal only. Being able to install dev packages right from the terminal woul...

3:20 PM
@TomWijsman the user script has a bug on Chrome

@Sathya Any distro --> not constructive.
@avirk What is the bug?
I don't see it... :(

@TomWijsman It show up the result twice on the left side

22 hours ago, by Sathya
@avirk screenshot?
I haven't seen any such bugs
and I've been using it since, well eternity

@avirk Any extensions, custom CSS, zooming or something similar that could cause that?
I dunno it has a max-width, overflow, etc... Which might be possible fixes.
But haven't seen it wrap around ever.

@Sathya I'll when I will boot into Win 7
atm I'm on Win 8

3:23 PM
so install it?

@Sathya yes non- activated version for 30 days :P
@Sathya I'll :)
After my 2GB data I've only 40kbps surfing speed :(
@Sathya I had problem to install the CM10, there is a boot.img which is called kernel I think inside the zip file should I exclude that and then try to install
@GeorgeDuckett congrats to complete level 4 :)

@avirk Thanks!
you're very close too

@GeorgeDuckett I still need 4 upvotes on my answer of your post :P

@JaredTritsch You are being pathetic, people will not upvote your answer if you downvote another. I'm partially answering the question, you already agreed. Grow up and learn. — Diogo 1 min ago
how not to comment 101.

yay I got a gold badge

3:34 PM
@Sathya that seems arrogant or I'm getting it wrong?
@HackToHell Electorate

yep

@Sathya Its my oppinion, if people be nice to me I will be nice with them. I got downvoted here for partially answering?? As I already say, it is still pathetic, people trying to win votes to win their surface... LOL — Diogo 1 min ago
stop digging in even further

I need two more 3+ answers to complete level 2 :/

Q: How can I make full-screen desktop applications only cover the snapped desktop?

nhinkleIn Windows 8, you can "snap" two apps next to each other, and one of those apps can be the legacy Windows desktop environment. A convenient application for this (or so I thought) would be to snap a chat client, small browser, or other app while watching content in full-screen on the desktop. The...

Q: Switch program to 'full' screen with side panel

Lg102In windows 8 (rtm), is there any way to force a program to go 'full' screen in it's own panel, while staying clear of the opened side panel? I'd like chat using the messenger app, while watching a video in vlc, but the blue windows bars are ruining the experience.

@HackToHell I just need one >_<

@r.tanner.f You are at Level 2 now :)

Ty =D You're one post away now lol

Internet Explorer 10 is being weaksauce around SU...
Can't click down arrows on chat, can't see Win8 contest banner

Time for a reboot to see if 8 --> 20 still imposes a GPE storm.

/rage

Bob
@allquixotic How's it going?

i'm at work and 25 or so miles away from both my win8 machines, so it's going great
i have windows 7 on my work pc and android 4.0.4 on my phone, that's it; and i'm perfectly serene

Appears it does... [ 0.192000] ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, transactions will use polling mode

25 miles.

3:45 PM
@TomWijsman I misunderstood the question I read titles as tile in hurry :P
2

That's like the entire length of my city.

when i get home i am going to be murdering some PCs

Bob
@allquixotic I was referring to the expected storm, but... sure, failed Win8 upgrades work too.

@jokerdino well i commute from the suburbs up almost into the downtown

Hm

3:47 PM
@Bob the storm is right on course to collide with us Sunday/Monday/Tuesday... the latest models still predict it basically coming right up the Chesapeake bay, which will dump an insane amount of rain and wind on us, and depending on the parts of the storm that hit us, we may get tornadic thunderstorms also

@allquixotic No Win8 on work machines?

Bob
:\
@r.tanner.f Win8 in the office? Are you serious?

the problem is, it's not JUST a hurricane; it's a hurricane and a coldfront
@r.tanner.f my enterprise just recently upgraded to windows 7 enterprise... I think by the time we get windows 8, windows 9 will be out; we might skip win8 entirely for all I know

Bob
Just from running the eval, this does not seem optimised for productivity - quite the opposite...

Meh I'm rolling with it at work

Bob
3:49 PM
so much swiping/gestures/animations/bleh

the amount of work that our enterprise invests into upgrading an operating system for peoples' desk computers is absolutely frightening
we're talking millions of dollars in labor (not including licensing fees)

@allquixotic any official news?

@avirk official news on what?

We just buy whatever the newest stuff is from Dell. I imagine one of our users will be getting a Windows 8 machine before too long...

@allquixotic windows 9

Bob
3:50 PM
@avirk win8 was released yesterday...

@avirk no idea, they've probably at least confirmed at some level that, yes, there will be a new operating system release of Windows after Win8, so I assume it'll be called Win9, at least during development

@Bob na, today, 26 Oct

Bob
@allquixotic heck, they probably have multiple different possible successor OSes

it's probably actually well into development at this point, because the "new code" team stopped working on windows 8 a couple weeks before it went to RTM

Bob
@avirk it's almost 3am 27th here

3:51 PM
they have their post-production maintenance team that pushes out service packs and windows updates, and they have their main development team that writes new code that changes APIs and stuff

@Bob Oh wow didn't notice that you're AU

the latter team has been off the win8 project for a long time now and working on something new

@Bob 2:30 hour for 27 :P

It's all about PST ;)

Bob
that reminds me, I should get some sleep

3:52 PM
:(
i am still kinda bummed at how much single player savegame data i lost when i wiped my HDD clean and reinstalled win8 on my desktop
so bummed that i almost don't want to even start over, and just install linux and go from there... after all i do identify myself as a free software supporter and advocate, i just also feel that i need to know the latest tech even if it's from the opposing camp

I just want free stuff :P

me too :P

Ah who am I kidding I'm a Windows guy :(

@r.tanner.f I always prefer :P

i should just put fedora on my desktop and laptop and get a refund for my upgrade licenses and forget about it... realistically it's what i should do... i can run windows in a VM if it's absolutely necessary that i have office or something

3:55 PM
Can't even grow a neckbeard...

@r.tanner.f i have a huge neckbeard... i could probably let it grow from my chin all the way down to my belly button

@allquixotic backups? bootable disc recovery?

@Bob i have backups of non-replaceable data except for my savegames and about 150 lines of Java code i wrote very recently and should be able to recreate in my sleep
i didn't lose any passwords or license keys; i keep them all locked away safely
