@JaredTritsch That's a lot of rep in 18 days O_o

Then I'll be happy :P

@r.tanner.f All but 100 of mind is in 5 days :/

Welcome @JaredTritsch, @GrahamWager. :)

@GrahamWager Ah but you've been around a while ;)
Looks like you got your feet wet in SO
Hope you stick around SU though

Thanks @TomWijsman :)
yep, SO was my start, then the raspi and a bit of arquade
but SU seems like a nice place to hang out so i'm sure i'll stick around
it's the first place I've ventured into chat too

10:08 PM
Greetings :)

@GrahamWager I like the chat here. Pretty slow and mellow, almost always SFW.

@r.tanner.f Don't jinx it ;P

Haha
I'm pretty sure the Comms Room has made me pop a few red flags in the filter though =S

@r.tanner.f :( Why can't it be NSFW... Lol

@r.tanner.f Definitely, and I felt welcome from the first thing I said in here which is great :)

10:14 PM
Got my first Windows 8 PE going finally =D

@r.tanner.f I got that much rep cuz i got skillz!
tyvm for the votez! Tier 3 baby!

most of my rep is probably thanks to my amazing mspaint screenshot editing skills if i'm honest...

^^^
I probably dont get all teh votes i want because im usually answering questions at work, where I can't grab my win8 screenshots.

I need one more post with +3... And another one that doesn't get closed :/

@GrahamWager Try Jing.
@Luke Yeah I need four lol

10:18 PM
My issue is, I don't want to ask the stupid questions, and I am always too late for the other ones

Thats MY problem too! So i usually make snipe answers without much detail... THen i edit later with more information.

@r.tanner.f I'll take a look at that in the morning, thanks :) though I do have a mixture of printscrn + mspaint or snipping tool down to a fine art now...

teh one question i asked got no votes :'-(

@JaredTritsch Congratz, want to be there too but I'm waiting for a magical +8 (or even +15) answer. Dunno what my highest answer is currently at.

SnagIT for the win!

10:20 PM
@GrahamWager No really, try Jing. ;) It's so fast.

@Luke Stupid questions like mine? ;)

Also, we just bought € 5000 worth of Windows 8 (for resale, obviously).

@JaredTritsch Yeah, Jing is SnagIt's baby brother
@TomWijsman o_o

lol i saw that edit pop and laughed out loud for real... now mu cubemates think im crazy...
2

whose edit?

10:21 PM
I only see one pencil edit icon on my screen.

@TomWijsman my highest answer is 9 so im just waiting on that +15...
its like a unicorn...
@r.tanner.f tom's statement about 5000 euros worth of win8

ohhh
I didn't see the resale bit xD

The funny bit is that it changed right as i looked at it.

I just figured your work decided they were going to upgrade now.

I has a YTMND moment.

10:23 PM
shame that €5000 only gets you 2 copies these days :P

lol @GrahamWager
lol. 2 surfaces, 2 people at that tier.
good times...

not for long ... i'm coming for them!

A: Looking at the screen in Windows 8 hurts my eyes

Jared TritschWindows 8 did get rid of the soft blend coloring in favor of sharp, bold, clear lines. Maybe that could be what is affecting your eyes. You are simply not used to looking at that kind of color and your eyes have taken the softness of Windows 7 for granted. Couple things you can try: If the te...

can anyone please tell me how in the hell that answer got 26 votes?
where mine, actually SOLVING the problem only gets 9...
I gots my tier 3... that SSD is MINE!

Eh, I know my first thought was "It's not Windows 8, it's drivers."

its not the drivers. its his eyes.
I had the same problem at first before i got used to it.
Cleartype wizard plus a darker theme = comfy eyes.

10:28 PM
Can't say it's bothered me at all (says the man surrounded by three 24" screens...)

<-- three 27s. ePeen

<-- not enough screens for this contest!

technically 4, but the 4th is a 55" TV mounted up on the wall... Doesn't count, but its a monitor i play rugby games on while i work.
okay i need 5 more 3's, 2 more 5's, and the goddamned unicorn and ill be tier 4

I got lucky off my first try:

A: How can I install Windows 8 on my HDD without the use of a USB or DVD?

r.tanner.fMount and run the installer! If you mount the iso as a virtual drive, all you have to do is run the installer! I had mistakenly thought that using WAIK was necessary, but Sathya pointed out that the installation can be run after simply mounting the iso. The rest of the installation files will be...

'er... the answer above it

damn that a detailed answer
and a good question too.

10:33 PM
although I hope that one hits 10 so I get the Populist badge =D

you cheated! you got the unicorn on both the question AND the answer!

@JaredTritsch See how productive laziness can be? =D

and that populist badge should have an asterisk*

10:35 PM
to post a question link like above, do you just copy the address onto here?

A: How do I shutdown Windows 8?

Graham WagerYou can find the shutdown options in the Charms bar. The Charms bar can be accessed by moving the mouse to very top right or bottom right corner of the screen; swiping in from the right; or pressing Windows+C From there, you need to click or tap the Settings option, and the shutdown options ...

ahh, cool

@JaredTritsch has to be alone ;)

10:36 PM
why am i alone?

yeah, if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't have bothered with the contest

you got 27 votes telling an idiot how to turn his shit off?
lucky bastard.

@JaredTritsch TBH all I really wanted was the t-shirt =D

lol, yep

hehe me too, but once i started i was like, "PROGRESS BARRS!!!! FILL THEM!!!"

10:37 PM
@JaredTritsch just had to star this line, sorry :)

@JaredTritsch It's not like the answer is exclusively for the OP

@JaredTritsch RIGHT!?
I started looking at it and I was like... >_>
Not enough blue.

..........

Now I'm all MOAR BLUE!!!!!
actually I missed the reply button
Uh-oh, how long is the automatic chat ban again?

it's too damn small, and too far away from the text most of the time so you don't realise it's moved up >.< I did that the first reply I did

10:40 PM
Shoot... 45 minutes to capture an image. Stupid thing better work...

Ohhh has Jared been chat banned for that? :/
guess he is alone now...

@GrahamWager Harsh.

:/ I can't even remove the star now lol, it's too late
Sorry @JaredTritsch !! Think I better get some sleep before I cause any more havoc :/
g'night guys

What happened?

@GrahamWager Have a good night
@TomWijsman Jared starred out two letters of teh f-bomb and got flagged

10:47 PM
Ah yeah.

Funny how it varies from room to room. Nobody would bat an eye in the Comms Room. Root Access is a bit more picky it seems.
Where's that question about making the Desktop tile show the actual Desktop?

4
Q: Desktop preview on start screen tile

George DuckettIs it possible to display a preview of the desktop on the desktop tile, like you get when switching to it?

@r.tanner.f You're going to write a script based off my self-answered question? xD
... if only someone would slip his finger here ...

@GrahamWager What stupid question are you talking about? :P

11:15 PM
Jesus christ
How do you enter a directory named -?
In bash

\- ?

Please, no guessing. I've been guessing for minutes :D

I've been guessing for seconds

@OliverSalzburg: Ah, let's see.

oliver@cloud:/var/www/putr.hartwig-at.de/l$ cd -/
-bash: cd: -/: invalid option
cd: usage: cd [-L|-P] [dir]
oliver@cloud:/var/www/putr.hartwig-at.de/l$ vi -/config.php
VIM - Vi IMproved 7.2 (2008 Aug 9, compiled Jul 12 2010 12:49:33)
Unknown option argument: "-/config.php"
More info with: "vim -h"
oliver@cloud:/var/www/putr.hartwig-at.de/l$ vi "-/config.php"
VIM - Vi IMproved 7.2 (2008 Aug 9, compiled Jul 12 2010 12:49:33)

oliver@cloud:/var/www/putr.hartwig-at.de/l$ vi "\-/config.php"
Seriously :P
This is getting ridiculous :P

11:22 PM
@OliverSalzburg: It's easy... cd ./-

Oh jeez
@TomWijsman Thanks mate :D

/sigh
Slow work day?

@TomWijsman unix.stackexchange.com/questions/53017/… Take it if it isn't closed in a sec as a dupe ;P
@Luke It's 1:20am
Saturday morning

Argh, beat by 8 seconds, but that's because I didn't have an account. xD

I don't think the issue is that it's being interpreted as a parameter. The -- should have taken care of that, shouldn't it? I assumed it's being interpreted as "last working directory", you know cd -

11:29 PM
@OliverSalzburg Updated answer answering that.

Awesome

@OliverSalzburg Oh ya, you're in Germany... It's 16:32 here, Friday afternoon
GMT -8:00

Heheh yeah, I'm setting up an URL shortener right now

@OliverSalzburg: Updated again, this time to reflect the comment. :D

11:34 PM
/me is suspecting he's getting stratergic downvotes WRT the challenge
NOT Cool
and whoever's doing it isn't even doing it right

@JourneymanGeek: Do those actually apply?

@TomWijsman Let's see if it actually gets closed as a dupe.

Because it would be somewhat lame.

@TomWijsman: I would think they do
but the second question (and its only 2) where I noticed downvotes predates the challenge
gonna keep an eye on it, but it smells ever so off.

@JourneymanGeek: If it is or becomes serial it might make it possible for a mod to intervene, although I guess that often just involves reputation and not actual votes. :S

11:40 PM
ya
Its only 4 rep. Its the idea that someone might do this (incompetently!) that gets my goat

11:53 PM
@TomWijsman xD That's what I was thinkin' ya

@JourneymanGeek If you ask a question on Super User, does the tag box give you any trouble with the dark theme?

When I click into it, the help text doesn't disappear

I don't get it
The SU CSS is a bit weird sometimes
I understand that the class for the ad box would be everyonelovesstackoverflow

Bob
11:58 PM
lol

But why would the class for the box that contains the excerpt for a tag be welovestackoverflow?

lol
What would be an appropriate place to ask questions like this? ;p

...rake in major rep, humm

you say that like it is a bad thing ;p
