02:00 - 09:0009:00 - 00:00

9:00 AM
so all i need for a new build is throw on the drivers, install my freeware stuff, and its identical to every other box i run for all intents and purposes

ninite works well as a single installer for most purposes.

@JourneymanGeek my best freeware, and aged utilities, just hangs out in organised folders on the root, no install needed.

@Psycogeek: i've been trying to phase out doing that

try everything instead of windows search it's super fast

glares at the pathtools folder
everything is file name only though
useful when you know what the hell its called or when it was created
I've had to dig up stuff based off very vague into, and windows search is more useful there ;p

9:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek On the other hand ,take Photoshop for example 3000 registry entries, some stupid activation, and layers of junk that I did not need. I tried to trade that for Gimp , 2700 registry entries, and layers of junk I did not need. then it crashed, then 64bit is back in beta.

@Psycogeek: Hence me running paint.net

@Psycogeek I bet Photoshop is a legacy code nightmare.

It stays out of my way, is reasonably fast, and free
also, i can't seem to wrap my head around anything else

photoshop's damn powerful. Paint.net's nowhere near that

@JourneymanGeek PaintNet , what is the net part for? programmed in Netframework (worst programs in the world) ? or requires the frilling internet at any time to exist :-) both banes of my existance.

9:07 AM
.Net framework.

.net framework's great !

@surfasb yes that is the one. programming toolbox for 4 year olds :-)

I second @HackToHell

Great for some simple programs and to get stuff for free, but nothing like real programming, so it doesnt have the massive skill used to program in higher languages.

@Psycogeek Sure, if you consider Visual Studios a toy.
Powershell is also .Net.
ASP.NET
Rather expensive toys. . .

9:11 AM
@surfasb I certannly am using that stuff in many things. We must remember that i went through ALL the revisions of it, from 1.0 and on. That i have seen programs that do better than word, that fit on 1/2 a floppy disk and didnt require 35Megs of subsystem. I am Biased as heck.

@Psycogeek Word is written in C and C++.

@Psycogeek, If you don't have a framework , it is very difficult to make even a simple GUI...

does the word dependancy on microsoft mean anything :-)

No, do you mean the phrase "don't like to be dependent on microsoft?"

If there is another program to challenge Office, it would be a better world.
But openoffice just doesn't hold a candle.

9:14 AM
agreed

When going through these revisions of "net" MS changed it and destroyed many of the finished projects, the programmer was either done with it or done with giving it away for free.

I wonder if it is because fewer and fewer schools are teaching C/C++ these days?

? .NET is reverse compatable

You aren't going to challenge Office using Java.

@surfasb, why not?

9:15 AM
Umm, you can use .Net 1.0, 2.0 om the 3.5 framework.

@JourneymanGeek it depends, I don't need software for it, hence why I mentioned SSH (tbh I was gonna use rsync) so essentially all I need is non-web accessible space somewhere that's reliable and in the UK

On the other hand i have programs that were "less dependant" and didnt require subsystems, that survived since win95 and still work today.

@soandos Java's GUI frameworks are atrocious.

@AhmedNuaman: ahh. you could also look at rsync.net

Net is now 2 times larger than a whole OS :-) talk about backwards compatable :-)

9:16 AM
@surfasb: honestly, the best way to challenge office is to go for something C based, cross platform and designed to be blazingly fast

@surfasb, true, but all it takes is someone getting something better than swing, and it could work i suppose
@JourneymanGeek, the problems with office are not speed

also, test the damned thing on a 10 year old system

@JourneymanGeek IMO, the best way to challenge Office is to make the change easier. Mainly 100 file conversions.

@soandos: I tried to swap office 97 with OOo on an older system (a pentium M 1.4). It was too slow to use

OO?

9:18 AM
@surfasb: or proper working cross compatibility so you dont' need to convert
open office

OOo/Libre needs to throw 100% of their efforts in making files round trip.

What do you mean?

Round trip as in they can go to Open office and back to MS Office.
I was reading about when MS perfected their WordPerfect file conversions.

@surfasb, are they trying to be a carbon copy of office, or their own thing?

That was back in the day before software documentations.

9:20 AM
well, to me, they need to speed things up too

@soandos I'm assuming their own thing, but the fact of the matter is MS Office is the standard and they need to play well with it.

(maybe do an abiword - have one team work on a core with a known API, another one focused on filters)

If MS could convert Wordperfect files back before dual cores processors and the Internet, then it should be possible now.
Heck, I read that not even WorkPerfect plugin vendors could figure out Wordperfect files sometimes.

@surfasb: file formats were significantly simpler then
and MS's documentation for iso certification is supposed to be utterly useless

@JourneymanGeek But at least documentation exists.
Wordperfect file documentation didn't exist back then.

9:23 AM
for me gimp and open office were very similar to thier counterparts, in size, registry mess, and complexity. I always need 1 thing that doesnt come in "paint" and "wordpad" but i have to deal with 1000 things to do the one.

And this was back when software teams were much smaller.

@Psycogeek: if you needed a slightly 'nicer' non ms word document editor, abiword is worth a look

I just don't think the Open Office team has it in them at the moment.

(its docx support was horrid the last time i checked, however)

@JourneymanGeek It does take a lot of time and money to reverse eng something.

9:25 AM
yes the parsing always fails !

I just think they could do 1000% better.

with docx in openoffice and libreoffice

Seriously, when they tried to implement some kind of Ribbon in the interface, I gave up on them.

@surfasb me too

@JourneymanGeek Most of my stuff still has to be in the lamest most usable format, that will still be converted 20 years from now. Some programs and formats are like VideoLazerdisk , just try and find a player for those. although i am not so old as to need a 8-track :-)

9:26 AM
That's it. I'm learning C.
I refuse to sit on the sidelines.

@surfasb: on the other hand. Its still more usable and fast than OOo

@JourneymanGeek Wait, you mean Libre?

well and that
Same difference to me, i've been installing libre since the fork, but calling it open office ;p

@JourneymanGeek I haven't given Libre a serious try.
@JourneymanGeek But then again, I know it will butcher the file conversions.

@surfasb: its supposed to be slightly faster than openoffice

9:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek its certainly faster

@surfasb: probably the same converters

than oo

Disclaimer I do have the programs i am whining about , on the other computer, and the other users use them. it is pure survivability without the costs.

@Psycogeek: you cannot support systems without having at least one piece of software you wish you could send into /dev/null ;p

@JourneymanGeek Now Eclipse is another beast. It's far better competition.

9:31 AM
@surfasb Netbeans is better for java

@surfasb: for?
Dosen't know how to code :/

@JourneymanGeek and that hasnt changed since the vic-20

java j2ee , j2se and j2me

Eclipse also does C/C++

@JourneymanGeek it's fun :)

9:32 AM
@HackToHell It's C sharp support isn't bad also.
But that's purely Visual Studios territory.

@surfasb eclipse ?

Yeah, Eclipse has a decent C# plugin.

I use VS 2010 pro
it's good

@HackToHell VS is the gold standard.

one great replacement item i have been happy with so far, is FoxIt reader vrses adobees Pdf reader. did everything i need, in 1/3rd the mess, and doesnt do the thing I did not want/need that adobee keeps adding.

9:40 AM
@Psycogeek: i've been running sumatra or pdfxchange
the former is plain, simple and just reads PDFs
the other has some features, but is less cluttered than even foxit

Adobee is a short drive away from here. they have 6000 people working on cute icons, and i think 2 programmers left, must have been a error in indian immigration :-)
(meaning highly skilled east indian programmers)

I'm like NetBeans for Java, Eclipse for Python and VS for any C languages.
With the exception that when I need to do something in Linux for university I'm forced to do those C languages in Eclipse, or well...
nano or pico because I ain't no vim person.

@JourneymanGeek "" Sumatra PDF Viewer. This lightweight program lets you view PDFs without a lot of extra features that slow things down. It has all the basics you need and none of the fluff that you don't."" <--- and that is what i need usually. I always wonder who is it that keeps asking for the fluff :-)

@TomWijsman Also a VS guy, but I used Eclipse in school, so I'm pretty proficient.

9:47 AM
@Psycogeek: also runs portably, single exe i believe

Some of the new Hardware fun things, I label as "Lookie, what I can do" Great , first i dont need it, second it still isnt debugged.
The new Imachine, it can fly to the moon and back, try it today before we add the oxygen tanks. Umm isnt that part somewhat important?

and zune software is a LOT better than Windows Media Player

Zune? someone say Zune? Zune nerd here. and yes, Zune software is a ton better IMO @HackToHell

yea ... its soooo coool
@studiohack just installed it

first time playing with it? do you have a Zune?

9:53 AM
no

aw, you should
nevah mind

Installed it just for this
WMP 11 in xp had this

eh, i've been using foobar2k for playing music ;)
ah yes, the dockable miniplayer

@JourneymanGeek it's got one !!
??

well not out of the box

9:55 AM
try zune the ui rocks ..

the main thing with foobar is its very tweakable, and i can use alternate audio output methods (like ASIO and WSAPI easily)
i don't need a UI
just a searchable list of music ;p

I am addicted to media libraries :)

Minis are great. For playing music i just need shuffle and play :-) the rest i am leaving up to the artists.
with the new 100gig music collections, i think shuffle play and WTF is that Delete would do the trick

10:26 AM
Remember the Bill gates/Steve Jobs YouTube that was posted here a few days ago? Bill mentioned that some groups were really making great stuff and going somewhere , They were not just pumping out junk that they could sell to some large corporation someday.... The tube video (in sections) runs out. . . a few seconds later my brain says, Did bill just say that his large corporation buys junk :-)

10:41 AM
I hate it that Zune has no smart playlists, which is why I switched to iTunes.
But well, these days I'm not listening to mass amounts of music although I really should.
So now it's mainly YouTube or Grooveshark or Hype.m or things like that whenever I feel to...

@TomWijsman what would a smart playlist do?

@Psycogeek I want all songs that are starred with at least X stars, that I haven't heard in the last Y days.
Or... I want to listen to all songs that I have not ranked yet.
And then Clippy shows up.

ahh, thats smart

Those kind of things, valuable when trying to sort out what songs you want to delete from your collection or when you are bored of hearing the same songs again.
But at the moment my music collection is kinda outdated, I can easily name a bunch of songs that I like but are not in my collection or not on my walkman... :S
The downside of hearing them on TV / radio or going to YouTube / Grooveshark / Spotify / ...
... and not keeping a list of songs that should be in my music collection.
Perhaps I should focus doing that on my Windows Phone 7 or so...

I do a lot of tv movie , in the same instances that other people are more likly to be doing music. the advent of amazing portable devices, from radio to tv. I can walk my dog and watch tv.
tv meaning DVRed programming, wedged into a 5" portable.
I finnaly overcame the hardests thing about outdoor computer, by going Cyborg :-) A eye viewer , that goes over one eye , so the sun doesnt wash out the picture. 3oz using the new dime sized lcd module (as modded from a finished product). I still have a hard time playing video games while jogging :-)

11:11 AM
It worked, that was to easy :-) that is my borg eyepiece. runs off a archos 5it, which has ways to output a fair res
the computer and some wires, goes into a fanny pack type pouch, bringing the total weight to ~1lb. complete with extra battery for full day operation.
Only 2 wires, the video and the ear buds, are visable, completly changing the idea and look of "wearable computer"

11:36 AM
and what would the pictures be without the meat :-) Not an easy picture to do, when trying to hold the parts and pieces from falling apart, but that is the android device showing in the tiny viewer. before assembly

hm
Need to RMA my dad's wireless mouse
we've had crappy luck with prolinks. This is the second one to drop dead

you could always try some american designed and american manufactured mouse. that is if mouses could be made from wood blocks :-)

11:55 AM
lol
I mean i tend to go for logitech
Most of mine last for years with no issue

@Psycogeek Jinni.com :)
I have a big wish list of movies (and series) I still want to see.
But I need to find time to watch them consistently.

@TomWijsman isnt that why they put dvd players in cars :-)
. . . when somone else is driving of course

> Happy New Year to All of you

is it new year already, i am not drunk yet. this is like birthdays, at some age seeing another year go by, or making another resolution to change , just doesnt have the same meanings
@HappyNewYearToAll so what are your plans for . . . . The End of the World as we know it?

Words will be the same after 2 days so why dont I greet everybody today :D

12:11 PM
I forgot the world was going to end, Pity the person who still hasnt figured out how to get windows 7 to hibernate properly . Mabey next year i can spell

@Psycogeek Does hibernating on window 7 is that what matter for you on this earth??

@HappyNewYearToAll yup , either my RSS feed is busted or not much in the world has changed.

@Psycogeek You need some coffee I guess

@HappyNewYearToAll Yes, it is the end of my day, functional operations going into sleep mode.

@Psycogeek So coffee wont work you need sleeping pills :D
> dont take much they are not user friendly

12:19 PM
@HappyNewYearToAll no drugs for me, although I would love to take advantage of californias Medical weed , the psudo legalisation of it hasnt dropped the price.

@Psycogeek There is nothing great rather than natural sleep...I always struggle for this :|

Turning off the power, always results in (terrible things) like cleaning the house, walking the dog, and sleeping normally. Around here if the Cable or the power goes out, people wander outside of thier homes like zombies seeking food.
With looks on thier faces like , Where Am I , and What happend to my life.

@Psycogeek You should watch dawn of the dead your kind of movie :D
@Psycogeek Life gone just wasting time..

Sure but are we just returning to our instincts, its winter, I should be hibernating, I keep warming my hands on the exhaust of the computer.

That made me loled....digital kamasutra

12:28 PM
with that caption :-)

12:56 PM
@Psycogeek Bye

@HappyNewYearToAll Have fun.

@Psycogeek There is nothing for fun

2 hours later…
3:28 PM
Anyone else know an awesome Open Source project that needs some attention :D?

3:52 PM
@BloodPhilia why are you offering to help? ;P

4:05 PM
Oh yeah!... New internet is so fast, speedtest.net can't keep up! all installed now :)
And... we licensed the speedtest engine from Ookla / run it within our network... now it is my PC that can't keep up with the speed (going to try out an Intel NIC next week)...

:O
that's just a ridiculous speed
is it megabit's or bytes

@IvoFlipse megabits

still very fast

hyperoptic.com - I just cant' believe that a few months ago, I found out about them/was saying wow... then, I emailed in... and... I have a job here! I love it... and Super User is partly responsible (thanks guys!), as they Googled me / found out a bit about me from here!

@IvoFlipse No, was creating ads for CA!

4:18 PM
Thanks

@WilliamHilsum Dear holy mother of the Spaghetti Monster

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes I know... not sure if it is a word, but, I think I had a geekgasm !? :/

@WilliamHilsum Oh my god haha XD

Whats happened with your name? :/
I did reply at that message

@WilliamHilsum Thought it was nice for the holidays XD

4:20 PM
lol!

I'm surely as mad as a hatter!

I wonder why chat is still doing it/changing to it :/

Ahh, your name is still that on the site... ok

Anyway, I have to go! Bye bye!

4:29 PM
Bye!

2 hours later…
6:00 PM
@WilliamHilsum nice, good to hear William. Congrats!
I'm heading out of town early tomorrow morning to a coffee estate. No cell network, no Internet, nothing. Soooo..
Here's Wishing folks a very Happy New Year! May you folks have a grand year ahead
11

enjoy your new year's holiday @Sathya :)

6:16 PM
Anyone else knows some Open Source software that deserves an ad?

6:40 PM
@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Wait, is this Bloodphilia?
Oh it is, heh. Loving the avatar

@SimonSheehan Yes it is XD
@SimonSheehan Thanks ;)

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes When i saw you comment on my post i was like "Hmm...new guy..."

@SimonSheehan No not really (a)
@SimonSheehan Fedora, really?

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Shrug We had Ubuntu in there before, felt maybe it would be something different
If you feel it shouldn't be, I can delete it.

@SimonSheehan No no no, just wondering if you were a Fedora person?

6:44 PM
@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Oh - Well its the first Linux distro I ever used (Back when it was Fedora Core), and I've used it on and off for the past 9 years or so. So yes :P

@SimonSheehan Okay :D I used Fedora back in the times it was still Fedora Core XD
Switched to Debian and Ubuntu since though

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Ah - I like what Fedora does with the linux community, so I support it.

@SimonSheehan Okay :D

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes how were your holidays?

@SimonSheehan They were alright!
How about yours?

6:46 PM
@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Pretty awesome so far - got to ski yesterday all day, and I ordered my own laptop finally!

@SimonSheehan Nice :D
That makes 3

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes the VLC is nice... but for some reason the font looks blurry..

@SimonSheehan Ye, you're right, it's too transparant... Just a sec

7:03 PM
:)

@SimonSheehan Better now?

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes much better!

@SimonSheehan Great, thanks! :D I seem to have acquired a certain style for the community ads I make :P

Haha, it does look nice.

@SimonSheehan I love that font

7:05 PM
What font is it anyway?

@SimonSheehan Museo

goes to download it

@SimonSheehan Some are free. Wait, let me find you a link

I use Museo slab
Found it? @SimonSheehan

7:12 PM
yep! many thanks!

@SimonSheehan You're welcome! :D I like collecting fonts!

I've got a folder of 5000 fonts :P... all not installed

@WilliamHilsum Great mate :D Hope you enjoy it

7:45 PM
@WilliamHilsum How's work been? Enjoying it still?
@nhinkle after reading the link you posted... totally redoing all my ads.

Anybody know what exp(-1/60) is?
I know, Euler number to the power of x, but it's used to compute OS X load averages over 5 minutes in 5 second intervals
Is that some weighting value?

@SimonSheehan thanks for reconsidering. Nothing personal (I wasn't even paying attention to who posted those ads), but last time the ads for ubiquitous software overshadowed potentially more interesting ones. Although I suspect someone else will post a Firefox ad soon... maybe you should leave it undeleted so it can be an example of what not to do :P

@nhinkle Good idea!
If everyone could do me a favour, please DOWNVOTE this post of mine meta.superuser.com/a/3977/80670

@SimonSheehan Lololol, sure

@SimonSheehan Done. You're welcome ;)

7:58 PM
Hahaha, this could get funny :p

Consider DOWNVOTING this one as well: meta.superuser.com/a/3979/34844
:D
@SimonSheehan Seems we're becoming highly inpopular!

Are the ad stats for the current period still up somewhere? Can't find the link...

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Give it two hours, and we'll wonder why we asked for down votes :P

Too bad, I did like the VLC design :c

@DanielBeck they probably forgot. @gracenote should be able to put a link in for us

8:01 PM
@nhinkle We could use that to judge community interest in some ads. Pretty sure nobody ever clicked on links for Firefox etc. I remember the most popular being the SOPA topics, but that's hardly surprising.

no need to continue downvoting, folks. i edited in a little notice on the VLC and Firefox ads. That'll prevent them from displaying on the site (because it breaks the required format).

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Thanks.

From the last round: blog, ubuntu, synergy, and SOPA got had the highest votes per day.

How do the votes received influence the frequency of the ad being shown? I.e. is higher vote = more views?

8:06 PM

Q: Having a little fun with hidden messages

iglvzxI noticed an interesting quirk with the editor. You don't need to put legitamate URLs when you add links. Has anyone else tried this: adding hidden messages to posts? (Edit to see my messages)

@DanielBeck IDK, good question.

@nhinkle Necessary information to judge the ad stats.

@Sathya Have fun and happy new year to you as well!
@IvoFlipse I love it there! The sort of thing I should have been doing for ages! I still run my company, but, not doing crappy little jobs at all any more.
@SimonSheehan very much so ^^

8:28 PM
@nhinkle Hate to sound like a pest or anything - those interviews coming soon?
@WilliamHilsum Any word on staying working there longer?

@SimonSheehan They gave me a further 6 months from my 5 week contract
too soon to say any more

@WilliamHilsum :D fantastic! Are you still doing the same consultant type work?

Anybody know in detail how Linux load averages are computed?
@WilliamHilsum Congratulations!

@SimonSheehan What interviews?

8:32 PM
@DanielBeck For the blog, we had planned for me and slhck to do an interview, a while back. Similar to the old style.

Aaaand that's another ad :D

@SimonSheehan Cool, looking forward to it. Those were some of the best articles IMO

I always thought they were great :)

@SimonSheehan When it says process, does that really mean process? There's an OS X related question on SU I'm trying to answer and XNU counts threads.

@DanielBeck I'd assume it means process.

8:37 PM
It's safe to assume that every runnable process has >=1 runnable thread, isn't it?

This is beyond my knowledge, sorry :p

@SimonSheehan Sorry, just got back, had to dash out... I am doing a mix of things... internal IT support/normal issues a lot of programming and giving out ideas with regards to things like load balancing/server infrastructure for the website along with using my business contacts to help out with procurement... I love it!

@WilliamHilsum Sounds like a lot of fun, and perfect for you! Glad you like it :D

If someone with Linux internals knowledge could double-check my answer, I'd appreciate it.

A: How is load average calculated on osx? It seems too high - and how do I analyze it?

Daniel BeckThe load is the average number of processes waiting. man 3 getloadavg says: The getloadavg() function returns the number of processes in the system run queue averaged over various periods of time. Up to nelem samples are retrieved and assigned to successive elements of loadavg[]. The syste...

It is just so fun being part of a startup/getting hands dirty in many different things e.t.c. ... LOVE IT... I just can't believe I got the job by emailing in and saying I wanted to work there!

8:44 PM
@WilliamHilsum Perfect way to get a job :D Hows the travel in winter?

@SimonSheehan lol... well... travel just SUCKS ... about 3 and a half hours every day :( ... have to pay about £1800 for my yearly ticket and I nearly always stand.... (I bought a year in advance on the hopes I will get renewed and it is much cheaper per day, and the price is going up soon... I can always pay £10 to get a part refund)... If I do get renewed, I may just move closer!...

@WilliamHilsum Yeah, definitely. Do they compensate travel at all?

@SimonSheehan Sort of... in my pay, I negotiated a bit extra for it... still just annoying... at least I am catching up on the SO Podcasts!

@WilliamHilsum Train?

8:49 PM
@WilliamHilsum Gosh, I very much dislike Trains in the UK

hehe, don't blame you! What's your story then!?

@WilliamHilsum Unreasonably high fares, no proper connections between lines due to public transport fragmentation, etc. etc.
I went to the UK twice and I hated it every time I had to use any :P

@WilliamHilsum Nothing to be laughing about you!

the connections are not too bad in theory... it is just annoying as the stations are so old and the designs... it can take up to 5 minutes to change lines at a single station... and you nearly always just miss one (on underground)... but, yeah, agree with everything

8:55 PM
@WilliamHilsum Well, the timetables here are constructed in a fashion you never really have to wait long if you transfer between lines. Theoretically I can get to one side of the country to the other without any hassle
We only have a few transport companies
Dutch Rail is the main exploiter and it does a pretty good job tbh
The problem in the UK is that different companies don't accommodate for each other's timetables
no communication :(

I have to say to some extent it is the same in England... the thing I hate the most is the price... if you are staying in London/don't understand, it can be tricky... but, basically... there are north terminals and south terminals... depending which side of London you live on, you come in to one of those, then, you need to use tube or something to connect between the terminals... e.g. I could get to manchester/up north easily... train from here to south-ish london, change on tube to a north

Dutch Rail has an average on-time-rate of 97%... One of the best in the world

london terminal, get the train from there to wherever...
but, it costs a fortune and yeah, is messier than it could be...

I think my line is 75 or 80!

9:00 PM
The Dutch Railways are the second busiest in the world

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes what's first?
I mean, India and stuff comes to the top of my head as always being crammed, but, I take it that is due to frequency of trains rather than busy

Doesn't say
Ye, frequency
up to 16 trains an hour on the same track

@RedhattedCatsaysBestWishes Is this a metro style railway or proper trains? I mean, to be fair, London Underground is like every 2 minutes on the busy lines (e.g. jubilee) in the mornings/rush hour... but, always crammed!

@WilliamHilsum Proper trains
Mainly double deck coaches

@SimonSheehan at my favorite ski resort, a lift chair suddenly fell off the cable the other day (two days ago IIRC), with two people in it
everything's fine now, but I've ridden that lift :P

@studiohack Yikes :O We had that issue only once... no one got hurt I think, just one of the poles holding it up kinda tipped over...
@studiohack Yesterday was nice - Only a few runs, but it snowed almost all day!

@SimonSheehan awesome! I probably won't get to go until feb or march
