@WilliamHilsum You cannot upload images directly to Reddit. The recommended image host for Reddit is imgur.com, created and managed by... a redditor. :P
StackExchange is also a fan of imgur, as you may have already noticed.

12:44 AM
@iglvzx hehe, yeah... and thanks!

1:07 AM
I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC, and I'm on a tight budget.. $300 absolute max. My current system isn't even worth mentioning for potential upgrades, so I'm looking for a good Motherboard/CPU/RAM config within my budget. I've always preferred AMD, though I'm reading that Intel pulls better numbers (for twice the price, though.. I'm not really concerned with benchmarks, I want actual performance. Anybody out there willing to help me find a good combo?

hmm
@jnpcl: I'd look at the current pentiums

@JourneymanGeek: On Newegg, the cheapest i5 is about 2/3 of my budget.

@jnpcl: the graphics on core i5s are good enough for basic gaming
You can then update later
however, there's a budget line of pentiums based on the same arch thats cheaper

better than a Radeon HD 4550?

Well, probably not
good enough for a budget starter system, and probably to handle say, source based games
erg

1:15 AM
I can worry about the video card later.. but MB/CPU/RAM is what I'm looking to upgrade at the moment.

Apparently newegg is more expensive than my locals

my local shop is about 25% more than Newegg, not including shipping :P

newegg.com/Product/… something like this sans case and hard drive maybe?
that should push the price down to what you'd be happy with.

I'm mostly just browsing Newegg, but I'd prefer to order from Amazon.. they actually honor their Free Shipping claim for Alaska orders. ;)

lol
well basic setup

1:17 AM
i already have a case and psu

go for a core i3 or sandy bridge based pentium
single or 2 4gb sticks of ram

i5's are pretty affordable now.

@SimonSheehan: his budget is really tight

$300 absolute max

how tight are we talking here?

1:18 AM
and even that means waiting another week to order RAM

a core i5 is what i'd personally go for

Oh wow. That's... really low.

Its doable

@jnpcl Do you have any old parts/chasing you can reuse even?

/me thinks one of the local stores has a 300ish dollar build
@jnpcl: also, how long before you could replace it?

1:20 AM
a few months most likely

The thing with low end builds is, they don't really tend to be as upgradable as better ones
hmm

Maybe use AMD instead of intel?

well, the current AMD processors were having problems weren't they?

yeah, i found a decent AMD setup.. Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 motherboard and an AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6ghz Quad-Core for about $230

My friend actually recommended me this setup before:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz (very basic AMD core, it'll do what you need it to do)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103687
$59.99

MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H (looks good and steady, reviews are positive)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394
$69.99

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD2500AAJS 250GB 7200 RPM (it's a western digital, good things)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136113
$42.99

MEM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (dual channel for better performance)
It's about $400, but we can retool it a bit for you.

1:22 AM
hm, need moar ram
also, can you reuse a hard drive on the short term?

yeah, i'm already running 3GB DDR2 667MHz
yes, i have a SATA-II drive

hmm, he could salvage the ram

like i said above... MB/CPU/RAM only :P

that would drive prices down a bit ;p

So he doesnt need a case or anything
And no HDD's

1:23 AM
nope

budget suddenly doesnt seem as bad

i should check my PSU though, brb

/me has been recently tempted to build a system with a giant industrial cooling fan ;p
Of course, i have been having an itch to build a new system as of late. If i can get a screen, i shall be looking at smuggling in parts ;p

@JourneymanGeek "Smuggling" always makes me laugh :P

1:24 AM
@SimonSheehan: thats literally what i do

Damn D:

I actually sneak in computer gear ;p

500w - thats plenty

Now, i might have a legitimate, non smuggling reason to get a screen
I might end up getting an AOC one though, based off my budget
(cheap, asian centric brand, seems to have decent reviews though)

1:27 AM
i love my Asian monitor... the brand on the cover doesn't match the brand in Windows which doesn't match the brand in the driver.

My laptop is coming Friday :> (estimated, I think it'll be sooner though)

well, my laptop has a 12.5 inch screen
its big enough for text, but i can't quite game on it

Ahh
@JourneymanGeek I bought a Lenovo Ideapad

(well, my dad got me the x220, which is nice other than that little USB issue)

And I'm hoping its as good as previous Lenovo machines have been, eg, thinkpad

1:32 AM
hmm what's a decent motherboard brand these days? I've been out of the hardware game for so long... Biostar and ASRock are new names to me.

I actually think i have too many computers
I like gigabyte
both biostar and asrock have been around a while. Asrock is asus' budget brand , i've had good luck with it

not sure who makes good RAM these days.. but Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 looks nice

Crucial is pretty popular and reliable from what i know
RAM is also dirt cheap now

i know... a friend online said he saw 24GB DDR3 for under $100, i thought he was joking

hmm
mini itx tho

1:42 AM
Damn

you ok with limited slots?

well, my current case is mini ITX

ahh
then not an issue

but i have an old Lian-Li PC70 server case

I prefer bigger cases even with mini atx
but the lack of expansion.. well, i suppose all you need is a good video card

1:44 AM
yeah, i don't have anything else to put in there except the video card
i have a 2nd system that i use as a media PC

I still use the old trusty Antec 900

i can dust off this beast if there's a better motherboard for around the same price -- i.imgur.com/vnqr5.jpg

@SimonSheehan Get the X3: $20 bucks more and you might even score yourself a fourth unlockable core.

@surfasb I already bought my computer :P

@SimonSheehan Aww, nm.

1:48 AM
eh, I have a soft spot for tool-less cases
our current system is in a coolermaster centurion. Lovely case other than the front grill rusting

I did get an i5 though in my laptop :D
I'm insanely excited for it

2:07 AM
hmm
actually, i was wondering, do SSDs generally come with an adaptor to put them in a 3.5 inch slot, or do you need to get a case that supports them?

2:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek I looked around on Newegg, and most come with a chasis for it.

2:43 AM
ahh good

A: What are the various ways to create links in Windows?

Tom WijsmanIn this answer I will attempt to outline what the different types of links in directory management are as well as why they are useful as well as when they could be used. When trying to achieve a certain organization on your file volumes, knowing the various different types as well as creating the...

That took quite some time.

@TomWijsman What I am seeing with the more free use of the complex linking , some of the ramifications of making an error are not well discussed prior to creation

> but it is part of the UK driving test that you engage the brake while waiting at lights.
Really?
@Psycogeek What error are you talking about?
I've listed the problem that could arise when deleting, I don't see any actual problems when creating them.

@TomWijsman I dont know, i am not completly sure of all the ramifications, so your writing was quite usefull

As in, I never had an error while doing so myself.

4:01 AM
Just reading at MS tech, which goes over my head, and seeing issues that people have had, "changing" the wrong thing, and the more complex linking causing problems. Also i noticed (again without comprehention) that there are many subtle differences in some of the deeper complex linkings between OS platforms.
Also It helps that i completly screwed up my whole system by messing with them more than once, while my system was still in diapers

Messing with those made by Windows have consequences.
But creating new ones yourself should in most use cases not result in any problems.

Ok that helps.

@Psycogeek: For example, the Users <--> Documents and Settings should be unaffected. The Program Files folder shouldn't be moved, and so on...
It is possible to move them, but besides making proper junction points they also require you to change the path to them in the registry.
Such that native calls do native access, and incompatible programs access the new path through a junction at the old path.

Where do I post abt an error with eclipse?

I've once had my Windows folder on C: and most other folders on E:.
@HackToHell What is the error about?

4:07 AM
on principal I generally dislike even crosslinking in registry, some of the doubling and messes i have seen there, that i have not recieved a understanding as to why they "needed" to do it. I see many nano seconds :-) being blown. Same thing with some of the link to junction to link passed to short, back and AUGGGG!

@TomWijsman it fails to update from helios to indigo

There are no nano seconds lost when moving your Program Files folder from C: to D:, whether it is native or reparsed.
@HackToHell Tricky, you could try Super User in that case I guess...

@TomWijsman ok

@HackToHell Perhaps you could look where the settings are stored, back them up and do a reinstallation after which you place them back.

@TomWijsman I am too lazy to do that

4:10 AM
@HackToHell: But well, the error might waste you more time trying to figure out.
Although, I'm also that kind of person that rather figures it out and learns from it...

@TomWijsman possibly
let me figure it out.

@TomWijsman (or reparsed) and what does that mean ? If a cluster has to be accessed to access another cluster, instead of accessing the cluster that you actually want, isnt 12ns lost ? If a registry entry has to be accessed, and the information processed , to shift the call to a different location, isnt there tiny ammounts of time lost, mabey even less than nanoseconds? Of course I am poorly grouping "links" of all kinds, and should try and comprehend 1 at a time.
But basically i do not understand how any redirections, do not require time and efforts?

@Psycogeek That is what happens with a shortcut, but doesn't happen with the other links. It accessed an object that is often already loaded in memory.

Any java guys in here ?

@HackToHell: /me raises half of his hand

4:18 AM
@TomWijsman gr8! Have you used GWT in app engine ?

@HackToHell No, I don't know about either. :(

@TomWijsman never mind.

@TomWijsman " if a redirection was from memory to memory and everything was all in the memory, like say the registry cross linking , The time and effort is Small or completly non-existant? how does something happen without the computer doing it ?

@Psycogeek In 2001, the memory normally has access time ranging from 5 to 70 nanoseconds.
From pcguide.com/ref/ram/timingAccess-c.html, it is probably even faster now...
Only a few nanoseconds really don't matter.
So the benefits of using links in a way that makes your directory strucuture more organized out-weight the loss of a few nano seconds, or a single (page) fault because it wasn't read in memory yet.
Shortcut links are worse as they actually require the computer to go and read out a cluster.

@TomWijsman Ok, how about a peronal example. Say i am editing 2 large video files, using extensive memory and processing. have some soft link to get to the files, and a junction too. i need the 90% already of everything. if the system is going to be fooling around :-) instead of as direct as possible, it is going to make what is a difficult situation worse. And that is where i would need to know more of the process of processing .

4:26 AM
@Psycogeek One memory call has barely any effect, once the handle has been made to the file any future I/O calls while the file is open are directly to the file.
Even when it happened on every I/O call, that few ns aren't going to affect the the few ms disk access require.

(again) that helps. Specific Junction? or "hard link" is it a link stored on hardware :-)

Both, a hard link is of course a bit faster. But well, almost equal as we're talking about ns.
@HackToHell Windows 8 just gave me the SmartScreen Filter warning when opening Eclipse. :D

@TomWijsman Is the hard link really a link stored on hardware? where does the system access the data to formulate the redirection?

@Psycogeek Anything is stored on hardware, more specifically a disk.
@Psycogeek > Hard links are not NTFS file system objects, but they are instead a link to a file (in detail, they refer to the MFT entry as that stores extra information about the actual file). The MFT entry has a field that remembers the amounts of time a file is being hard linked to.

@TomWijsman excellent. that helps. and hard links are also called junctions?

4:40 AM
@Psycogeek All that information is in my answer.
> The NTFS junction point is a soft link, which means that it just links to the name of the file. This means that whenever the link is deleted the original data stays intact; but, whenever the original data is deleted the original data will be gone.

Hello.
Is anybody actually still around here?

@rumtscho Hello, yes we are.
The end of the line shows at what time we said something. :)
The (gr)avatars at the top right show who is active and who is not.

@TomWijsman I have found that the gravatars often take a long time to fade after people have closed the chat window.
But I am glad to find somebody.
I have a question which is probably for the main page

@rumtscho I haven't checked it, but could be possible.

but know so few about the matter that I need some explanation before I can come up with a sensible formulation

4:48 AM
What is your question about?

I hope you will be able to enlighten me a bit, or at least tell me if it's possible.
@TomWijsman swap size.

@rumtscho: Depends on the matter, so shoot. :)

I want to do a clean reinstall

On Windows or Linux?

Linux

4:49 AM
@TomWijsman it is in the answer from a person who obviously now understands how it works :-) because i need a more rudimentary (see moran) explainations that follows paths and has pictures :-) System asks for file -- Some registry entry tells it to look here instead - - File is loaded . Then my brain goes, and what IF that file isnt there? then what is the path :-)

Because I'm more of a Windows person.

I currently go without swap at all

@Psycogeek Windows has errors for that, but well, I avoided going to low level or I would have spent ages on that post and it would be extremely long.

but now I want to put the various often-written-to directories in the RAM, using tmpfs

@rumtscho If you have enough memory, that sure is a possibility.

4:51 AM
And it sounds logical to me that I may need swap if I do that

But indeed, for that use case you just mentioned you indeed want to have a swap because you will have less RAM available.

@TomWijsman That's just what I thought

Perhaps it would make sense to make your swap the same size as the RAM disk you will create, so that in the end you have the same amount of available space.

But I don't know how much I would need

But usually people look at how much they use on a daily basis and also when they have a spike, and set it according to that.

4:52 AM
@TomWijsman Pages and pages long. Trying to read it off the MS site was pages too, but it tends to fly over my head. and MS always Waits till after the User screws up, or has a slow computer, or has caused a infinate loop, before they toss in the warnings, or "user" explainations.

Or well, there is also the don't-touch-it way of doing so. But I guess that's not possible on Linux.

@TomWijsman I have no idea how big the ramdisk is going to be

@rumtscho Then I guess that might be the first thing you need to figure out, how much size you want to sacrifice for possible ramdisks.
And that size would be the size you usually don't use, which is another thing you could figure out.

@TomWijsman I thought they are dynamically assigned, depending on the size of the mounted directories

@rumtscho Ah, that way. But I guess the swap itself is not dynamically...

4:55 AM
I have a guide in front of me which gives the command for creating the ramdisk
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0
And I don't think it gives a size
It is frustrating how few things the guide explains, it just says "do that".
@TomWijsman No, it isn't.

In both cases it really is based on monitoring how much ram disk and how much ram you use yourself, then you can figure out how much you could put on the ram disk as well as how much you need to assign for the swap.
You could probably leave something like the system monitor (or top) running in the background and then check it periodically or before you shutdown.

Hmm. I hoped to do the whole install today, that doesn't give me much time for gathering usage statistics.

@rumtscho: On the other hand you could take a guess and see whether you were wrong or right.

You are not aware of guidelines prescribing the swap size under these circumstances? Because they generally recommend 1.5x RAM size, but that's without RAM disks

If you make the swap as large as the ram disk could be there shouldn't be a big problem.
1.5x is when the swap is a necessity for the system to function properly on a large set of use cases

4:59 AM
@TomWijsman So, my question should be how to find out the size of ramdisks this command is creating?

My system has no memory problems so I could go without a page file, although I keep the page file for performance and stability reasons.
@rumtscho It is probably dynamically as you say, you just limit the amount of stuff you would put into the folder yourself.

@TomWijsman The folders which go to the ramdisks are the ones to which the OS writes a lot. I don't know how much it usually writes there.

@rumtscho Ah, that's tricky then.
Well, then it might be more feasible to go for a larger swap to avoid having issues of your ram disk conflicting with the amount of available memory.

@TomWijsman Still trying to think of a good formulation for the question. Do you think I should describe the whole long situation, or just ask about the normal amount of data expected to be written in these folders?

@rumtscho Focus on the actual problem, you can always describe more information later when necessary.

5:04 AM
@TomWijsman The whole reason I am doing this in the first place is that I only have an SSD - so space is a very limited resource.

@rumtscho: Err... Yeah, that ought to be an annoying situation then.
If its a computer, it might be worth considering a second hard disk. Alternatively, more memory would remove the need for a page file.
But well, just trying out what you think is best first could help with not necessarily having to buy something.

@TomWijsman I have external storage for my data, I wouldn't get a new disk just for the swap partition.
@TomWijsman I think I'll ask how to arrive at a good guess for the size then.
You were very helpful, when I came here, I didn't even know if my logic (that I expect I'll need swap) is correct.
Thank you for helping.

@rumtscho Good luck, I'll try to upvote it. :)

tmpfs sweet, with winders most of the ramdisk are not dynamic at all
this thing gets to grow and shrink based on what is tossed into it.
if there is a windows thing that works the same, it would solve my "ramdisk" problem of wanting to have enough ramdisk, but needing all the ram the rest of the time.

My ram disk didn't work a while ago, so now I have none.

5:18 AM
Nothing shown in the wiki for dynamic (user type) ram disks :-(

@Psycogeek: i think lmdisk might do that
ahh apparently not

5:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek made me look :-)
looks like the tmpfs, started out as a Cache controll of sorts. securfox.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/how-to-create-a-ram-disk (bottom of page) Rmpfs. Then gets re-programmed into way more control. has size settings and swap

Q: How Do I Become A Super User?

11D Reality HackerI have often wondered exactly what a Super User is, I heard it a lot at school, and so I googled it a few days ago. Now that I know what it is, how do I become a super user? I just want to be a super user in general not an OS based super user. I have toyed with Ubuntu before and mainly use Window...

Must make Studio hack the Reality Checker (see posters username)

6:36 AM
Funny that someone actually goes ant answer that. And well, his avatar... :D

6:56 AM
@TomWijsman Pokemon Fan ? :D
You guys like unicorns?

7:51 AM
@AmithKK How would you conclude that I am a Pokeman fan? My sentence referred to studiohack's onebox.
@AmithKK The Stack Exchange network likes unicorns... :)

@TomWijsman So, Why YU no Use our userscript?

@AmithKK What do you mean?
There are so many userscripts...

@AmithKK So, why is that so vague? You don't describe what userscript. There is no readme / documentation visible. What is this? xD

8:08 AM
@TomWijsman Yeah... we broke some of it :D
The one is Unicorn starring
񵞉 :D Makes unicorns dance when you star

If you star that video, unicorns will dance on their own. ♭◕‿◕♭

@TomWijsman ..

Finally!
First golden osx badge on the network AFAICT :-)

@DB Mission accomplished!

10:25 AM
yay

11:00 AM
@DanielBeck grats!

11:53 AM
@TomWijsman It really depends on the situation... you are told to put the handbrake on whenever you are going to stop for prolonged periods of time - traffic lights or traffic. The thinking behind is that if (hopefully not) you were taken ill, or something serious was to happen, you wouldn't release the (foot) brake. Whilst it wouldn't do much on a manual, could cause a small disaster on an automatic!
personally, if I am at a light just as it turns red, I will put it on... if it is red when I get there and/or I know it will change soon-ish, I won't do it.... I think it used to be law/highway code, but, it isn't any more.
let me just look... I actually have my highway code next to me as I was looking something up the other day!
Can't see any rules about it at all

12:21 PM
Happy new year to everybody!
(I can't be here when it actually happens, and well, it changes at a different time everywhere...)

12:34 PM
@TomWijsman happy new year to you as well! (and everyone else!)

12:44 PM
happy new year @WilliamHilsum

hm, wierdly i miss having a mouse
(got one a few months ago and lent it to my dad cause his mouse spoilt, been using a trackpoint for years.)

I have HP Pavilion DV4T-2100 model running windows 7. Today when I turn it on I got black screen and it is not showing anything at all. Everything else is working. I can hear fan noise, LEDs lights are blinking and even I can hear window welcome tone when window starts and also as I know my first screen is password screen when that tone is played I type password and press enter and I can hear sound that is played when user login inside system. Only thing that is missing is display as screen is completely black all time. I have done removing battery and pressing power button for 30-60 second

@anujprashar: tried an external screen?
also, if its under warranty, take advantage of it. its either lcd or backlight

Thanks for reply. I tried connected monitor of my old pc but it is not recieving any signal.
also unfortubately it is out of warranty.
Is it because of graphic card or motherboard?

hm you may need to hit the key combo to switch screens a few times

3:17 PM
yes done it few times.

probably just the screen
if the graphics card was faulty it shouldn't even boot

ok I can see screen brightens varying when it boots but it is black all time.
Ok so problem with screen or backlight.
Thanks for your time.

4:08 PM
OK I talked with someone who has similar issue and he told me to get display ic chip of my laptop replaced.

4:32 PM
@DanielBeck Congratulations :) (I bet you deserve much more … if I just got 10 cents for every 0-score answer from you I find …)

4:53 PM
CONGRATS to @DanielBeck for acheiving the first gold OSX badge on Super User!

5:35 PM
check out the video guys

@Studiohack, are you there?

5:52 PM
hey @WilliamHilsum - what's up?

@studiohack two things... was it you that I was going to pay via Paypal for the extra pen? I forgot all about it... but, I can do it now... Also, I was wondering if you had a Steam account and could do me a favour?

@WilliamHilsum extra pen? I don't think so? what pen?
I have a Steam account, I don't do much with it, but if I can help, I will

@studiohack the birthday competition thing on this site... there was a pen that pushed me over by $3 or $4, I said I would pay for it... but, can't remember who I said it to :/

@WilliamHilsum oh, you got a gift certificate to the SE store? and the pen pushed you over? it wasn't me, I'm not sure who you said that to, I wonder... maybe @nhinkle or @IvoFlipse?

as for steam... there are a few things that are cheaper in USD, and the person who usually gets them is offline... if you have an American account (which I guess you do!), I was wondering if you could buy them and I will pay you in advance?

5:58 PM
@WilliamHilsum sure, I would be willing to do that - via Paypal?

@studiohack well, haven't received anything yet... yeah, I think it was nhinkle now you say that

nhinkle ran the contest for the most part. I'll superping him. @nhinkle, see the transcript between here and the video...
@WilliamHilsum as for your offline person, did something happen to them? (just wondering)

@studiohack yeah... it comes to about $40 or so... there will be new items in about 3 minutes so, I will wait until then as there may be a few more..

@WilliamHilsum okay... so I would buy it and then "gift" it to you?

@studiohack Nope, they are good, it is GnomeSlice from Gaming.StackExchange, but, he said he may be busy over the weekend and there are a few items I don't want to miss out on... he does have about $20 still of my money, but, I am sure it's ok/I trust him.
@studiohack yeah

6:01 PM
@WilliamHilsum ah, I know of him... sure, no problem, I can do that, I trust you as well :)

they have announced todays deals... and yesterdays ones are available for 4 hours... I will just see if there are any others that are cheaper in USD... I have gone through the sales for the past few years without buying anything - now I have a steady income, they are just too hard to resist! I don't have the time to play, but, I am stockpiling for later use!

@WilliamHilsum haha, for when you retire, eh? ;) I tend to take lots of photos and then stockpile them, joking that when I retire, I'll go through them and frame them or print them, and sell them :P

@studiohack yep! retire/bored or something!

well, just ping me whenever, or email me at my Super User address @WilliamHilsum - I've never bought stuff on Steam before, but shouldn't be too hard to figure out

@studiohack ok, it will be about an hour... thanks for this

6:08 PM
@WilliamHilsum no problem, I'll check back around then

Also, check if there is anything you want for yourself... it saves me a bit of cash, so if there any cheap games I can get you, let me know!

@WilliamHilsum I don't game much, I even have some awesome games that I haven't gotten to play with, like Dirt3 and Civilization 4, but thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind! :)

well likewise, if there is anything that is cheaper in GBP in the future, I'll be happy to purchase for you... many things are almost equal (10p/c), but, there are so many things like GTA (£3 cheaper in GBP) or X the other day(£4 cheaper in USD) where it can really mount up.

yeah, interesting how that works, with different prices different places
@WilliamHilsum can you (either here and I delete or via email) your account details for Steam, so that we can be "friends" so that I know how to gift you?

6:23 PM
@studiohack steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197961691740/home this is my profile, I think you can add from there - no need to delete, others can add me if they want!
... when you buy, you can choose "add to my inventory", then through the friends screen, right click my name and choose trade... then, you can trade the items to me

@WilliamHilsum ah, okay

It may be worth you doing the free/easy tasks in the holiday challenge, may (but unlikely) to be able to get a few free games for yourself

@studiohack Thanks
@slhck Thanks, but AFAICT you suffer from the same problem ;)

@WilliamHilsum that page takes me to my profile home, not to yours @WilliamHilsum

6:28 PM
@WilliamHilsum got it - you'll have an invitation from westerngeek

Hey @studiohack, feel free to add me too :) steamcommunity.com/id/iSimon

@SimonSheehan done :) (westerngeek greets you ;P)

logs into Steam
@studiohack added :)
Steamcomm is broken so I cant check out your games, rawr

@SimonSheehan yeah, with the 503
now its back

@studiohack Mhmm....typical Steamcomm

6:35 PM
what does Civilization V cost in Great Britain @WilliamHilsum? here, it is $10.19 USD, deal ends in 3.5 hours

@studiohack the sales are the same world wide :p
Just in the currency of whatever country you are in

@SimonSheehan not necessarily... I'm trading games for @WilliamHilsum...
playing Half Life, eh? @SimonSheehan :P

@studiohack Indeed :P classic

@SimonSheehan yeah, steam just told me that lol

I have that disabled :p

6:38 PM
@SimonSheehan just now or?

@studiohack I've had it disabled forever. Never tells me about logins or people joining games

@SimonSheehan oh, disabled in that direction, gotcha

@studiohack Yep.
Because I used to have 250 friends (the maximum), it started getting annoying :p

so tempting to buy Civ V for 1/3 the price

@studiohack sorry... dogs are being naughty... back now...

6:42 PM
@WilliamHilsum no worries

It is £10.15 in GBP (for Game of the year edition)... so $15.80
Personally, I know I am not going to have time to play these for ages, so, I am only buying games that (I hope) there won't be any more expansion packs and/or are at their cheapest... I want Civ 5, but, obviously it will come down more next year or similar

@WilliamHilsum not sure what the difference between Civ 5 Game of the Year ($17) and Civ 5 ($10.19) is, except the price...

@studiohack it contains all but 1 or 2 of the DLC

@WilliamHilsum ohh, okay, so the other one is the base content

@studiohack GOTY usually just means they threw in expansion packs :p

6:46 PM
but, there are one or two I saw which are not included, which is why I am not getting it... that and the price! Still a new-ish game.

@WilliamHilsum $15.80 isn't too bad

@studiohack but, it is missing a couple! maybe I just have OCD, but, I like everything! lol... if you want it, I can deduct that off of what I was going to give you and buy it in GBP... well, $15.80 is at the Google rate,... not sure how much exactly it will be until I do the paypal transfer for mine

@WilliamHilsum with Steam, you can download the games you own as many times as you want, on multiple computers, right?
as long as you don't play the game at the same time on different PCs

in theory yes... which is why I love it (and why I have rebought some games I already own as they are cheap), but, some games have additional DRM
... you can download the majority of games on as many pcs as you want at the same time, but, you can only log on to your steam account from one at any one time

@WilliamHilsum ah interesting
I think I'll skip Civ 5 for now, I already have Civ II and Civ IV @WilliamHilsum - which works for me for now

6:51 PM
lol

Civ II is awesome, took me a few years though how to get the CD up and running - when my tech skills got better :P

I liked call to power... I want a game to go from pre-historic (almost) to space age! Sort of missed that they took that out (AFAIK).

I like it because it is simple and fast, (Civ II) :P
ping me whenever @WilliamHilsum, back in several minutes

7:13 PM
and back @WilliamHilsum

7:31 PM
@studiohack really sorry this is taking longer than I thought... if you can't do it or anything, don't hang around for me... I will try to finish very soon

@WilliamHilsum no worries, I'm multitasking, just ping whenever
welcome to Root Access @rumtscho! what brings you here?

7:53 PM
@Studiohack - done! It is quite a few!

@WilliamHilsum okay!

Whats easiest for you? Are you doing this through steam or the webpage? e.g. want links, or happy for me to list and then you search?

@WilliamHilsum Links is probably best, so that I get the exact game you want (so I don't have to worry about a variation, like Civ 5 Game of the Year versus the base Civ 5)

hehe
ok, then, I think you have to buy through the website rather than steam for links... of all things, my server is playing up today so I can't easily email... can you email me @ wilhil@gmail.com as I don't have you address, and I will give you all the links
(once I get them!)

@WilliamHilsum okay, emailing you now - and yes, I'll do it through the website (is there a difference?)
