8:15 PM
just finished converting an NPC into a 9th level ranger PC. I kinda want to play a ranger now.

@NautArch But that's not a Tier 1 class. pushes glasses up nose

@Karelzarath Harumph, gentlemen, harumph.
Did the revised Hunter Ranger - was closest to the NPC.

Oh hey, it's that Werewolf guy again.
And again, I personally feel like that's too many features for a race.

"Please design my homebrew race for me"

5e is not my bag, so I'm not going to comment.
And I dislike +ECL races in 3.5 generally.

8:22 PM
ECL?

LA was never a good way to balance playable races.

As far as I know, there's no level adjustment races in 5e. The issue is that all of these features sound like a level adjustment race from 3.5.

Effective character level.
ECL = Class + RHD + LA unless RHD = 1, and in which case, ECL = Class + LA.

ah

(Cause class levels wiped out your RHD if you had RHD=1)

8:23 PM
And I get that this full moon rage thing is an attempt to balance all the broken things the Werewolf has access to, but ceding player control should not ever be a thing that's a feature of a race or class.

Were-creatures are a bit different, and I don't think they should be a player class. The whole alignment change and lack of player control is firmly in the "no fun" zone for me.

The problem is that someone will always want to play a werewolf.

@NautArch Agreed. It should be something that the player wants to have removed not something that gets sought out.

I left a comment suggesting that he come in here or to a regular forum because the Q&A nature of the stack isn't very good for iterating a design

@Karelzarath the problem is that the positives outweigh the negatives with lycanthropy.

8:27 PM
That's when you tell someone to go play a druid if they want a wolf form so much.

Personally, I muhc preferred the Kobold/Warforged/Shifter approach or the Raptoran approach to giving +0 ECL races access to shiny high ECL powers.

(The former had decently powerful feats that added to their racial abilities in cool ways, the latter had a flight ability that scaled with HD, allowing them to "have it" very early on, in a throttled way.)

Feats are really expensive though, since most people only get 6
Scaling by RHD is free so you can get away with smaller bonuses

I find it interesting that the werewolf template lets you keep control of your mind if you embrace the curse. I would argue that a werewolf could never keep control of their mind, at least not without magical or alchemical intervention before hand

Why not?

Gotta have Snape brew that Wolfsbane potion.

8:30 PM
Werewolves aren't swearwolves

Although I think Wolfsbane also diminished the wolf form.

@Yuuki Exactly. Plus it was expensive and tasted terrible.

I'm not sure it was expensive materials-wise so much as it was difficult to brew.

Snape should really have done more with his life than being a teacher

IIRC, Lupin said that Snape was one of the few wizards capable of it.
@SPavel Dark Arts, not even once.

8:31 PM
He should be at least as good as Slughorn, so he could just hook up an IV drip of Felis Felicis
And mow down Voldemort in a hail of fiendfyre

IIRC it was prohibitively expensive for werewolves, because there was such a stigma against them that they couldn't hold down a job. In addition to it being hard to brew

@NautArch Exactly. Which is why afflicted lycanthropes lose control of their character every full moon. IMC, if a character lost themselves in their lycanthopy, they'd become an NPC. Unless the campaign somehow revolved around that, of course.

And then go on to become king of the wizarding world, because potions are super OP
@Karelzarath There's no reason to stigmatize accepting who you are
Werewolves don't "give in" to the curse, they learn to love themselves for who they are on the inside, and who they are on the inside is a DeviantArt wet dream

@SPavel IIRC, Felix Felicis had some side effects, particularly with regular consumption.

@SPavel Get back in the box that society allocates for you, heathen!

8:33 PM
@Yuuki I'm sure there are potions that can mitigate the drawbacks

@Karelzarath and every DM wants to monitor the lunar cycle!

Hell, you can just polyjuice into the Minister and go around telling people to do dumb crap and nobody would know

@SPavel haven't you seen the potion miscibility table? You could explode!

@Adam I love that table so much!

Potion miscibility table is great, 1% chance of getting a permanent potion effect and there are probably some other ones but I didn't read them

8:35 PM
@SPavel, that entirely depends on which version of lycanthropy you're talking about. "Accepting yourself" instead of "stigmatizing" is the wrong message to send about being a murder machine.

i hope the black dragon guy does come into chat

@godskook That's racist

or gal

@NautArch Do you not have an in-game calendar that you check days off of? >.> <.<

Say, how come there aren't were-dragons
That would be awesome

8:35 PM
@SPavel, please tell me you're joking.

I'm always joking

@godskook Why so serious?

Social interaction was complicated as a kid, but humour is easy, and everyone loves a comic

@Karelzarath I have yet to run a time-sensitive campaign. I did a time sensitive encounter once, and that went incredibly poorly.

Time sensitive games are terrible because PCs love to screw off anyway
And then blame you when the princess is dead

8:37 PM
@NautArch I mostly use it to track seasons, but adding a lunar cycle would be simple enough.

@Karelzarath, somebody I have no previous context for just told me something I said was racist. That's a moment to get serious and figure out what's going on.

This is the Internet, the moment to get serious is not now

@SPavel That's why RFED is so wonderful. It rectifies any misbehaving party in a timely manner.

Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer?

@SPavel Bunch of others. One or both potions could fail to have an effect, they could turn into a random poison or you could literally explode are the ones that come to mind. I think there are various states of "They both work, but one works better"

8:39 PM
Racist Forks Extraction Device?

@Adam yeah but then you can just roll a new Snape

Radio-Frequency Erectile Dysfunction

Fill Hogwarts with nothing but greasy Potions masters

Rapid Fornication Ejaculate Dilemma

Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies!

8:39 PM
ded

Actually I have a +10 against rocks

Werewolf guy voluntarily deleted the question. We'll see if he drops by (fingers crossed)

pulls out obscure Dungeon issue

@SPavel But do you have a +10 against everyone dying?

Yes, thanks to this alternate class feature found on the back of a limited-run Cheerios cereal box

8:42 PM
Okay, so roll a DC-You're-Dead DEX save.

I took the Nameless feat, so I'm No One and no longer a part of "everyone," so I survived.

@Karelzarath But do you know what can change the nature of a man?

@SPavel A skilled doctor, a sharp knife, and a whole lot of money?

THEN THIS IS MY ANSWER AND YOU ARE THE PROOF: NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE NATURE OF A MAN.

@SPavel I have this scroll of Wish. Is that the answer?

8:45 PM
You truly know very little, about very little. Have you bashed your head against every rock that has fallen from the Mountain of Ignorance?

My players actually convinced me on April Fool's day to let them roll percentile dice to find a scroll of wish in a bag of holding they found

Do ye know where the Holy Flamin' Frost-Brand Gronk-Slayin' Vorpal Hammer o' Woundin' an' Returnin' an' Shootin'-Lightnin'-Out-Yer-Bum is?

@SPavel funny you ask that...it is those very rocks that are crushing me.

They didn't find the scroll. But almost rolled to get the Deck of Many things instead :p

@Adam They instead found a Scroll of Wish For Deck Of Many Things.

8:47 PM
@Yuuki @Adam or a scroll of wish for a scroll of wish. Let's see how that turns out.

@Yuuki If they had rolled 00, I would have given it to them. 01-10 was the deck of many things. You may be wondering why they had a greater change for getting the DoMT instead of the scroll. The answer is "u mad bro?"

Fall-from-Grace: Morte, I'm curious... what happened to your body?
Morte: It's a long story involving the Head of Vecna. I don't want to talk about it.
Fall-from-Grace: (Laughing) That was you?
Morte: Could we *please* change the subject?

I should open a campaign with fully-decked out 20th level characters who just found a Deck of Many Things.

Why would intelligent 20th level characters USE a Deck of Many Things.

8:52 PM
The rewards of the Deck aren't that impressive for 20th level characters, nor are its consequences that dire
It's the sort of thing they might pull out at a party - come next morning, everything can be swiftly undone.

The "lose a level" one is pretty shitty.

Just take a dip into the fires of Hell, plenty of victims there
Or thought bottles
those are good

I'll use a homebrew set, but in any case the point would be to have them draw until they reincarnate into 1st level bodies.

Then just start as level 1 and say that's what happened
Building a level 20 character is too much work to have it be undone by fiat

SIR, WILL YOU BE PURCHASING THE CUCUMBER?
SIR, PLEASE STOP PETTING ME, I AM A SERIOUS SHOPKEEPER.

@BESW I wonder if that is our Leroy Jenkins

@Yuuki There's a jewellery store near my house which keeps a large black dog. In the day it's behind the counter but at night they let it roam the shop.

@Yuuki What does Righteous do again?

@Adam Just something I made up for the weapon. As far as I know, 5e doesn't actually have any weapon enchantments.

9:18 PM
It does actually have some minor properties in the DMG

Huh. I tried searching for weapon properties/enchantments and Google didn't give me anything.

Do people often make more than one save per round?

Many of them only have thematic or very limited effects. For example a gleaming weapon never gets dirty. But there are others that doing things like give you language, or give you a boost to initiative I believe

@BESW I was thinking about once per rest as well, but I left home before any decision to change it.

What's the 5e out-of-turn action resource spread look like?

9:26 PM
@BESW What do you mean by that exactly?

What sorts of actions can a 5e PC take outside their own turn and with what restrictions? Immediate reaction, opportunity action, etc?

@BESW 1 reaction. That's about it. I think there is an unearthed arcana subclass which adds a class feature so that you can take multiple opportunity attacks, even if you have used your reaction, but that's a rather special case
Reactions cover pretty much everything outside of your turn, so opportunity attacks, some spells, and various class features all call out that they use your reaction. And you don't get it back until the start of your next turn

Hmm... would granting on saves made on a reaction instead be restrictive enough so it's not too overpowered? Or would that still have to be limited?

@Yuuki Saves don't usually take up your reaction. You are forced to make saves. Reactions are usually things that your player chooses to do in response to a trigger, not things that they are forced into doing.

I could make suggestions for ways to rewrite the power, but I don't know enough about 5e to say if even as is it's overpowered or not.

9:34 PM
@BESW I have a feeling that as is, it's still pretty strong.

I'd say it is. The Holy Avenger gives off an aura that gives you and allies advantage on saves against spells, but even that sword requires that it be drawn to be active

I was thinking, for example, "While this weapon is sheathed, you can use your reaction to grant an ally within 15 feet advantage on a saving throw." But eating up a reaction action for advantage might be a bit extreme.
Alternately, "While this weapon is sheathed, the first ally within 15 feet to make a saving throw each round has advantage on that throw."
Or "While this weapon is sheathed, one ally within 15 feet can use an extra reaction action each round."

Quick request: can y'all look at rpg.stackexchange.com/q/98875 and tell me how the Q and As look in non-mod vision? I just used “lock: off topic comments” and I can't tell what is locked: just the comments, or also the vote buttons, edit, answer box, etc. Can someone tell me what functionality is locked down?

I can comment and vote on answers but not on the question. I can't provide a new answer.

Same

9:38 PM
@BESW I think that's the best option for now until I get some more opinions on it.

That is… less than desirable. :/ Thanks though!

"While this weapon is sheathed, each ally within 15 feet has advantage on initiative rolls."
"While this weapon is sheathed, each ally within 15 feet can move 5 feet for free on their turn."

@Yuuki The problem is that doing something for other people when you aren't using the thing is really, really good

I like getting creative with that kind of thing.

You might be better off having it doing something for everybody while it's out, and something less awesome just for the wielder while it's sheathed.

9:41 PM
@Adam Yeah, I'm trying to figure out a way to word it so that you can't use another weapon while you have this weapon. So it's either unsheathe it or do nothing and just provide a passive bonus to your allies.

Curse it

@Adam Which is kinda problematic since it's supposed to be a holy legendary weapon.

No joke, if you curse it so that they have disadvantage on attack rolls with other weapons, they won't use them. And the thing is so good, they probably wont ever remove the curse
Some deities are fickle. Just because they are holy, doesn't mean that they play nice

Fair enough. I think I can work something into the lore of the weapon. It is, after all, forged from the body of someone who is basically a saint.
Maybe a sort of "let me rest in peace" sort of sentiment.

You can give the sword sentience. Then if they don't use it, it can come into conflict with the user. One of the potential results of conflict between a sentient weapon and a wielder is the weapon refusing some of its powers, or even breaking attunement entirely I think.

9:44 PM
@SevenSidedDie Also I can't edit the question.

@BESW Hm… I pulled the lock since it didn't do what I was hoping (just lock down the comments… like it says), so it should be fine to edit now. Maybe refresh the page (and then blame caching)?

Remember to talk to your kids about the dangers of lichdom before they hear about it at school.

Life is a fatal, sexually-transmitted disease. Necromancy is the cure.

@Karelzarath That is...humorously accurate

Spoken like a true believer of Urgathoa.

9:51 PM
@SevenSidedDie Yeah, just trying to be complete about reporting what the lock does.

@BESW Oh, perfect then. Thanks. :) (Generally, looks like it gives a full lock to the post, unlike an historical lock, which works on the whole page. These are good things to know that, ironically, mods can't see.)

Meta Stack Exchange doesn't have a faq on that or something?

@SevenSidedDie You don't have a 1-rep test account?

@BESW dude, don't do that to me! I thought the product was shut down.

Ben
10:16 PM

hey there @Ben and @Karelzarath

Ben
o/

@Shalvenay Aloha

how're things going?

Ben
I just realized that I missed out on the Power Rangers movie. I'm a little heartbroken.

10:31 PM
Come to Guam, we're still showing it seven times a day.

Ben
T-T
Apparently they're still showing it out of town too... but I can't afford the trip

@BESW no thanks, doesn't sound like my kind of thing XD :P

10:45 PM
@Karelzarath Hasn't really been necessary. For things a 1-rep user can do, there's not much that I can't already test completely logged out. I'd need to generate significant rep with a new account to make it useful to test the sorts of things I otherwise want to test.

And you can always just volunteer the chat as guinea pigs.

@BESW Just so. :D

11:01 PM
@SevenSidedDie Fair enough.

11:16 PM
TIL Fred Hicks had his characteristic blue hair even while getting married:
Happy anniversary, my love! @xiehicks https://t.co/HckvtVghuo

@doppelgreener I don't find this too surprising, why marry someone who doesn't like how you typically keep your hair right?

@trogdor that's fair enough :D

Ben
11:55 PM
@daze413 @sevensideddie to continue the clarification here (don't want to choke up the comments) I have tried to continue the plot, but every time I do, she always brings it back to the love interest.

@doppelgreener I actually never noticed that he had blue hair,.... I think I had just thought his picture had some blue thing behind him XD

Ben
As for what the player has actually said about the topic, every time I have spoken to her about it, she has said that she agrees that the story is not developing, and she sounds like she's sincere about trying to restrain herself, but I have not seen any change in that direction.

Oh, ha! That is your question, @Ben.

Ben
Yeah

I need to get better about looking at usernames.

Ben
11:58 PM
And thanks for your advice, but that's completely unrelated. Lol
