@BESW I think your cut-and-paste broke the links' formatting.

@SevenSidedDie The in-chat post is doomed to failure; I format for the sidebar pin.
"Cool RPG/SE stuff" is an ongoing feature I've instituted because people often lament missing time-sensitive things like Kickstarters, so people bring the links to the chat and I pin 'em up in a single block.

@BESW Cool. I don't know why the formatting breaks in the message but not the bar, but I see that it works anyway.

I could force the formatting to work in the chat message, but that'd make more work for me.
It's not really covered by this meta post.

@SevenSidedDie line breaks.
if there are line breaks, formatting in chat fails, but they are ignored in the sidebar

Yup. (actually line breaks turn into single spaces in the sidebar.) I use line breaks to keep it orderly so I can easily clip stuff out and add new things, or find the right line to edit if there's an error. Since the chat message itself gets swallowed up in the natural course of chatting, there's not much reason to remove the lines when I post.

12:40 AM
@waxeagle we on for tonight or was this a break week?

@JoshuaAslanSmith on tonight
unless my internet sucks again

@waxeagle !
Almost got a dell venue, 750.

@BESW We can't see the future, and once we can answer it, the question is useless. So, close as "we're not fortune tellers"?

If there's an announcement or similar, we could cite that.
A quick Google gave me this.

@BESW Even announcements aren't much good though. No lasting value, liable to change, and easily googled. It's an extremely low-quality question.
Also, we shouldn't feed the help vampires.

1:18 AM
@waxeagle Definitely not gonna be on time. Might not be in time for anything. Probably not going to be in the mood for it if I am.

@Grubermensch sorry :(
hope things go better

My afternoon rhymes with shmop shmatabase.

.@penguinrandom is not run by giant spiders.
.@maureenjohnson *stares* *scuttles away*

@Grubermensch did you dropa database? Nothing good about that (if you are still working on it)

1:45 AM
Oh yay, chat is working for me finally! Work's internet has been flaky for the past few days

o/ @waxeagle
and :/ @Grubermensch
databases don't like floor impacts sigh

I wanted to vent about undead in 3.5e... I'm prepping for a published adventure, and looking at the undead abilities. Level drain? Ability drain? As a player I hate these things. Even as a DM, I hate these things.

@Adeptus Ability drain isn't as horrible
(Particularly if you target players who don't need the ability you're draining)

I can't just leave out those abilities, since in some cases they are their only form of attack. I'm thinking I'll either give Restoration potions in treasure, or make all drains temporary.

yeah, higher level undead are the suck
@Adeptus -- do you at least have a cleric in your party?

1:56 AM
@Adeptus [patpat] I hear that.
Undead encounters in 3.5 tend to consist of each side firing save-or-suck at the other until someone fails the save.

@Adeptus note that this is why these things are removed in 4e and 5 :)

Who controls a ranger's companion or a mage's familiar, the DM or the player?

@waxeagle Not entirely removed in 5, be fair
@DavidWilkins Edition?

2:02 AM
5e

@Miniman there are some rare abil drains, but level is completely gone
its more HP max drain

@waxeagle And no one misses it
@DavidWilkins Ranger uses their action to control their animal companion, familiar is a little unclear

@Miniman nope, not a soul

But probably still the player

Ok. At least until the ranger tries to make the pseudodragon do something it doesn't want to do

2:04 AM
@DavidWilkins Wait, you have a ranger with a pseudodragon animal companion?

@DavidWilkins I'm assuming you know that that's technically not allowed?

How so?

@DavidWilkins A ranger's companion has to be a Beast type creature, pseudodragons are Dragon type

@RobertF you around?

2:11 AM
The PHB does use the word 'beast' but doesnt say it has to be the beast type...hrmmm...my ranger may have led me astray.....but....

@DavidWilkins did you see the question?

@DavidWilkins It's probably not a huge issue

@JoshuaAslanSmith no
I am inclined to allow it as an npc that counts as a companion

I am thinking of a druid question actually
ohhh
yeah I would say it needs to be beast
beast is a monster descriptor

But does obey the pseudodragon fluff
Meaning if it doesn't want to do what you say, it retreats or holds...

2:15 AM
aren't psuedodragons supposed to be NPC/warlock only?

They can be familiars

@DavidWilkins but not via find familiar IIRC?

Right, and this one has chosen to befriend this ranger
Ranger being a lore master with dragon lore knowledge
There is an awesome backstory, and the player isn't the type to take advantage of mechanics

hmm I'd check it against things available as animal companions. I don't think it's too strong right off

I will, and I will contrast the companion mechanics with the familiar mechanics
Worst case though, I feel this could work

2:22 AM
I think it's sufficiently thematic, not overly powerful (maybe actually quite under powered), and would work well

I will even allow the magical resistance, but if the ranger lets it die, there will be serious consequences

It is a certain sort of satisfying when a problematic question shows up in the feed already on hold.

@doppelgreener definitely
the feeling of not being alone :)
and of a strong community moderation effort
trust me when I say mods love it too

Well, that one got hit by Brian before anyone else could get to it.

ah well..alls well that ends well then :)

2:34 AM
well, i still get to appreciate it that there are people moderating things that actively!

2:56 AM
Ooh man. Hillfolk looks interesting. So many games I won't get a chance to play anytime soon but want to, augh.

o/ @Pixie

Hey!

how're things going for you?

[wave]

Alright. Lots of snow, enough to cancel my work for the day. So... I mostly spent it dusting and rearranging ponies. :v The sky continues to fall, though, and I'm confronting the fact that I won't be making it to an interview tomorrow...
How are you?

3:08 AM
@Pixie Are you looking at the Hillfolk Bundle of Holding?

@Pixie :( we've had something like 9 snowdays in the past 3 weeks. It's enough that our local school system actually announced that they were starting on time tomorrow

@SevenSidedDie I am! Considering picking it up.

@Pixie The >$17 donation extras are nice, but being able to get the core for very little helps on a small budget. It's worth it just to read. :D
And I am scheming hard to run Hillfolk after our Apocalypse World campaign comes to a natural conclusion. I think AW has primed them for something more emotional-drama like Hillfolk. ^_^

@waxeagle We've had a lot recently too. There was one week that I only worked at the library 1 day out of a normal 4.
The interview I'm supposed to have tomorrow is at a school. It was closed today, I only have school contact numbers, and it's going to be closed tomorrow except staff are going to be there. Problem is... my interview is at 7:30 in the morning.

@Pixie yikes, probably gonna be quite icy at that time of day

3:11 AM
@waxeagle Yep. It rained all day yesterday (so the creek nearly flooded), then it started snowing in the evening and is still snowing now.

@Pixie -- OK here but having a bit of a bumpy time

@Shalvenay Aww, hope it improves for you.
@SevenSidedDie I read some reviews, and it sounds like the kind of game my group might enjoy.
Certainly I would.

RL's OK -- but RPwise, it can get very frustrating when it feels like your fellow players are wanting to disavow you

@Shalvenay Ah, yeah, not fun.

@Pixie There's a couple of SRDs for its underlying DramaSystem, but in my experience, it didn't make any sense without reading the actual game. It's the bare rules only, when the game really, really needs the explanatory text around it for the rules to make sense.

3:17 AM
@SevenSidedDie Ahh. I don't know how much that would fly with my group... easy to pick up rules are best for us. But I'm still willing to give it a look.

@Pixie They're pretty straightforward actually, but how and why to use them isn't obvious until you already know how and why. I expect I'll tell my players how the rules work on the fly; they're simple enough. But they're unusual and unintuitive. Plus, the SRDs lack the setting. :)

@SevenSidedDie I totally make up most of my settings, so that's not a big hindrance, though examples are nice. xD

Or maybe not unintuitive, so much as really different from most other games out there. Without explanatory text, expectations imported from other games will mess things up.
@Pixie It's well suited to alternative settings. The default one has some advantages for learning how to play well, but could be skipped if players were already keen on the dramatic scenes.

Tempted to get the full bundle though. Some interesting-looking books. Art and Murder seems awfully... Hannibal-y.
Well, not after reading the description. I forgot one could do that. But the cover and title totally remind me of it. xD

4:08 AM
I wasn't very impressed with Hillfolk, at least its kickstarter preview version. Which may have changed! I'd be interested in hearing from someone who read the new rules and my (p)review of the system.
My thoughts on Hillfolk/DramaSystem, in case anyone cares.
It remains one of the more consistently accessed posts on the blog, after the few that still get routinely linked here to my amazement. I guess reviewing a relatively obscure system means you'll get hits from people looking it up.
And the current Bundle of Holding obviously contributed. When I say "it gets hits", I mean once a week or so...

I might weigh in after I get through all of the rules.
Right now I am trying to make a wordpress forum work the way I want it to. [grumbles]

Wordpress... forum...
I've set up a few wordpress blogs, and it's always been straightforward. No idea about forums though.

I had issues skinning PHPBB the way I wanted. Wordpress is nice and easy to skin. But you need roughly 3 million plugins to make a BBpress/Buddypress work like a conventional forum.
But I think I'm mostly there. The one thing I'd really like to be able to do is have multiple themes that people can choose from, but none of the handful of plugins meant to do that work very well.

Urgh, I'm totally helpless with that sort of thing.
I couldn't get Wordpress to do a thing.

4:24 AM
I mostly have it the way I want it to be. Some things are a bit annoying and I feel like maybe I'd be better off with an actual forum software, but they are all just really annoying to style in my experience.
Aside from aesthetics, color schemes and font size are pretty important. My boyfriend and I both have eye issues, his far worse than mine. So if I can't easily figure out the template, it's a big problem.
I like the way vBulletin sites look usually, but it's also like... $200. Wordpress is free.

@DavidWilkins From the Paizo page on pseudodragons: They are wary of evil folk but can bond with sorcerers and wizards as familiars, and some have befriended druids and rangers or partnered with good dragons as scouts.
So I'd say as a companion, it's not out of line at all.

@JohnP 5e, not PF :P

@Miniman Oh, sure, play the 5e card.

Sorry
Incidentally, oh gawd

@Miniman Yeah, that guy is a hot mess with his questions.

4:37 AM
@Miniman [squints]

When a pseudodragon finds an agreeable companion, it
bonds with that person as long as it is treated fairly.
That's from 5e. While there is a box that delineates the familiar part, that sentence would seem to allow the ranger bond as well.

@JohnP Relevant.
(Rather than repeating myself)

@Miniman Spelled that wrong.

4:55 AM
@Grubermensch Sorry, my bad.

It's "relephant," obviously.

Q: How much pedagogical detail is legit in student-oriented game recommendation?

harlandskiI'm thinking of asking and self-answering a game-recommendation question. I teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL/ESOL) at a foreign university. I had a great experience last semester running a simple rpg for several groups of college-aged students as part of their English-language tuition, an...

Not even people from semi-imaginary islands...
Ok.
Bye then. o/

8:32 AM
@BESW I am glad I thought of something before he did
or at least before he tweeted it
more or less

9:30 AM
I think this question needs a "System mastery doesn't mean min/maxing; it means being able to hit any goal you happen to have" answer, but I'm not feeling up to writing it.
If the player can be persuaded to express his system mastery by hitting the power levels of the rest of the group, that might be good.

@BESW I think there's a very similar question with that answer on it, but I'm on mobile so I can't find it.

I'll dig for it later.
In other news: "Crystal Clump" would be a good name for a band.

Aw.

Morning

Hello o/

1:02 PM
hi!

what's everyone up to?

Designing icons for a board/card game.

Just got to work.

watching youtube videos

what if we unhallow the ocean instead

Reminds me of Dragon of the Lost Sea.

Probably the same thing I would guess. I doubt any deity wants his holy water to have poop in it.
Or unholy water

this is why necromancers get shit done while the clergy is tied up in beauracracy

As the case my be

1:48 PM
(A witch made her phylactery out of a magical sea compressed into a gemstone.)

that's cool
but also seems easy to destroy, haha

Wait what does a phylactery do for witches?
I thought that was a lich thing

It was a sort of "One Ring" deal: she became insanely powerful and almost impossible to kill, at the cost of having that power be misplaceable.
@Aaron Eh, "phylactery" is just the closest word I could grab. It's a re-telling of a Chinese myth.

yeah i assumed it was jut the same thing for liches haha

Ah

1:50 PM
same super powers but with less undeath

It's a four-book series and the stone gets turned back into an ocean at the end of the first book.

I still want to try to play a reformed lich sometime. Or find a good lich variant.

does she retain her powers or were they dependent on the ocean being in the gem?

She loses some of her power.

better than nothing

1:52 PM
The rest of the series is dealing with the political and practical aftermath of having a really ticked off witch and a really ticked off clan of dragons (who had been living in the sea) and all the people who see this as an excellent time to enact their plans.

@Aaron Not the baelnorn, I'm guessing?

The Monkey King gets involved, to everyone's dismay.

haha

@Aaron Archlich?

@Miniman Not sure what baelnorn is.

1:53 PM
A baelnorn is a fictional undead creature, usually a spellcaster, in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. Baelnorns are described as elves who sought undeath to serve their families, communities, or other purposes (usually to see a wrong righted or to achieve a certain magical discovery or deed). They are lich-like creatures that appear as impressive-looking elves with shriveled skin and glowing white eyes. Most of their appearances in modules, setting books, games, novels and the like are related to the old lords of Cormanthor/Myth Drannor, a fictional location in the Forgotten Realms...
Probably quicker than me trying to explain

That sounds pretty cool actually

The problem is, you have to have a purpose you were willing to face an eternity of undeath for
It makes for one-dimensional characters

It can but is there any stipulation that after you complete that goal you die?

you can have a devout focus and be a multifaceted character

@Aaron No idea, there hasn't been that much written about them

1:57 PM
Generally it's not a task, but a duty.

Yeah, lots of ancient guardian stereotypes

Something that ties you to the world in an ongoing fashion, connecting you to generations of people you gave up the afterlife to help.

Ah.
That would make for an interesting character though depending on how you decide to interact with them.

Becoming an immortal mentor to an entire city, for example.

If you decide to be the silent guardian of your family then you will be pretty boring. But if you are the guardian but act like a grandparent or something then you could have a lot of fun.

1:59 PM
Very cool stuff, but not generally the sort of thing which lets you take time off to go smack orcs in a damp cave far away.

Right.
Still sounds interesting.

you can be devoted to a simple purpose like guardian and still be a multifaceted character

I once played an archlich whose duty was curating a legendary library tended to by generations of librarian monks.

Could be a good RP idea if not a table top rp idea.

He went adventuring when somebody burnt down his library. His primary goal while adventuring was to collect rare books to rebuild the collection.
If he managed to track down the arsonist, that would make him happy too.
....wow, it's past midnight. Time flies when you're drawing idols.
G'night.

2:03 PM
good night!

Night, fellow sensible timezone dweller

also even though you retain memories from life, you can still forget things with age
i once had a mummy lord villain that was destroying the continent because he was sworn to protect his master's tomb, and someone blew a hole in the wall
so he considered the entire world to be part of the tomb
could always play with things like that

Apropos and by the way, I like role-playing religious characters. Usually the usual "charity and good works" fare. However, I just started thinking how a more authoritarian, elitist church would practice good works.

and if something threatens to destroy the world it's easy to justify that it'd fall within your duty to stop

If you have, say, a church dedicated to social hierarchy (obedient peasants and just rulers), what would be a suitable mode of charity?
Y'see, most of real life religious charity I know of is more of the "everyone's equal in the eyes of <insert deity here>"... in this case it's a part of the creed that there are people who are strictly better.

2:09 PM
well, think about it from the church's perspective
who in the social structure would need the most support?
it might be that they're still just as interested in making sure peasants stay alive in order to serve their lords
or it could be based on other beliefs of the church such as belief in knowledge or piety

Yeah, but charity feels somehow hollow when it's not an end in itself :P

Historically, the catholic church was fairly authoritarian, its own structure mirrored that of secular feudal society

perhaps charity would go towards conversion?

Even Martin Luther, who wrote and stood for religious freedom, condemned revolting peasants and said the gentry should strike them down

peasant implies revolting har har

2:13 PM
@kvrii getting into some deep waters there with "what is altruism"

Oh, I don't believe in absolute morals anyway :>
Another idea I had is maintaining a religious police force.
My character's religion tolerates apostasy (from the peasants, at least) but crime and rebellion against a just ruler is a grave sin.
Maybe I'll combine the ideas: religious police + religious almshouse = religious prison!

what's their policy on tithes?

see knights templar and knights hospitaller
Both of which formed for very specific security and welfare goals in a specific region

suddenly have the urge to run a spelljammer campaign haha

@DavidReeve Would collect, in moderation (they never sought a huge presence, because their god is more into morals being followed than mere prayers)

2:19 PM
@DavidReeve madness

@kviiri ok, so tithing is optional? they'll probably end up dedicating most of it to religious service, and if they're operating a military, then that as well
might not even have anything left over for charity

Heh, true.
In times past, my faith used to have a priest by every ruler, reminding them to be just and noble in their rulership. And helping them crush the peasants if they rebelled anyway.

how many rulers are there and is there a hierarchy among them?

Rulers are the normal secular bunch: mayors, counts, dukes, grand dukes, kings...
Since then the faith has lost influence, because they never sought converts and some nobles, I guess, just took the constant "conscience monitor" to be frustrating :P
Now they remain only in a few clusters with little political influence, trying to petition their way back to the circles.
...which would be a great way to spend any leftover money.

3:10 PM
I dont think you understand church finances
in a medieval society
The church needs noble patronage to have any real infrastructure and manpower
likewise nobles need church support to remain in power
You can make enough money to cover clergy operating costs by running Trappist monasteries and collecting tithes from parishioners, but constructing new churches, raising hold orders, having holy wars, that requires serious funding.

This isn't that kind of church.

Im saying that you cant have the kind of church you want do the things you want it to do

I don't understand

Contrast the Catholic church of the era with reformed theological churches afterward (Protestant)
Protestant church relied solely on donation tithes from members, most of whom were low and middle class and could sustain themselves and perform community services, but lacked the funding and infrastructure to act beyond their immediate area.

Yeah, I can see that. But this conceptual religion doesn't act like either of Catholic or Protestant church. It strives to be a sort of outside observer moderating peaceful society, not a huge deal in itself.

3:23 PM
Im bringing it up because of your earlier spitball idea of a religious police force

Yea?

Im contesting that you could have this Quaker type religion somehow have the societal carte blanche to operate, let alone draw in the necessary funds for operation, that is all

I guess you misunderstood it - it'd be police force that's religious, they'd be enforcing social peace more than religious law (because the religious law in this case is pretty much "if you're a ruler, be noble, fair and just - if you're not a ruler, be loyal, obedient and humble")

I mean its totally your game/world/idea so do what you want,

And no, they don't have any carte blanche. They used to.

3:28 PM
realistically to enforce and embody the law you need that carte blanche, nobles are historically jealous of power, I can't see the secular order not overtaking those responsibilities if the church fell out of favor

Yes, but secular nobles are prone to corruption and ineptitude. That's why there are criminals, savages and wild beasts preying on travelers and even cities.

religious leaders are no less prone to corruption and ineptitude
if anything they attract it as it's easier for them to get away with things

They believe they are, and that's enough.
(also, some actually are, because in RPGs one actually gets divine advice from time to time)

4:08 PM
Morning all
for those who it's morning for...

argh. So,...I have the correct answer but because I didn't format it pretty I get no rep. ::phfft::

Awww
Q.Q
It has to be 'pretty' :/

Just aggravating. I only care because I'm trying to get to 3k for close vote privs.

Have we taught you nothing in retail? Presentation is EVERYTHING :P
Ah, you have a goal in mind. I can understand the aggravation :/
You've out-repped the 'Readied Action' question we both answered.

@JohnP i gave you a vote

4:11 PM
so there's that...

@Airatome Now all I need is 10 more votes and you two more and I can get a shiny gold badge... w00t. :/

lol
Oh, 300!
you said 3k
I was confused
I was like (Rep goes up that high? O.o )

3000 for open/close voting privileges.

wow....it does go up that high
Good luck with that my friend

yeah, seven sided has like 90k

4:16 PM
lol

@johnp rule of 3, use headers via bold

he would....

you can't even even edit unapproved until 2k
rule of 3?

@JohnP Break it down into 3 mini paragraphs with their own headers
insertQuip{"The Medium is the Message"};

Thanks JAS , had no idea those milestones existed

4:19 PM
@Airatome ..wish there was something after 20k :|

I'm just here to throw my random questions and minute experience at you all when things come up
minut....minute? Wait.....Minute(Small, insignificant) is spelled the same way as Minute (measurement of human time?)

@Airatome heh, I started here as a RPG rookie, hadn't even been playing for 2 months.

english......so awkward...

@waxeagle You have our adulation, isn't that enough?

Honestly
once people start asking if they can wax your eagle
you've won
that's it

4:21 PM
@Airatome Yup.

You know what does it say about us that people who learned English as a second or even third language are more fluent in it than native speakers?

English grammar is taught very poorly in public schools

@JoshuaAslanSmith ... I can't argue with that.

Yea I wouldn't say I'm a 'rookie' to RPG's , I've been RolePlaying for a horrendously long time, on forums and other writing sources. I've been world building and character creating and plot weaving for so long I have characters stuck in my head that wont ever leave me alone.......

4:23 PM
I learned more about english grammar studying german up to AP level than I ever did in english classes

if you want advice on writing characters? Antagonists? I'm your guy. I can answer basic questions ans cite rule book pages.
beyond that I'm no good to anyone >.<
I'm about to be 4 sessions into my first successful D&D campaign as the DM so...that's where I'm at so far.
I tried to ...uh....translate...my fantasy world into D&D terms/mechanics when 4E came around....that went horribly....

@Airatome Congrats.
I just wrapped up my first campaign. Starting a new one now. We have had two sessions.

i'm starting a new campaign as a player next week, current one's been going for ~20 sessions

@waxeagle - Thinking rogue sniper, crossbow. Not sure race yet.

@JohnP cool. That will be very effective

4:37 PM
@waxeagle Only as effective as the player, but I'll put a char together soon and shoot you the pertinents.

@JohnP cool.
Our next meeting looks like it won't be til the 26th so no rush

@waxeagle is it point buy or 5d6 or what?

Kinda bummed. Starting to think the game I tried to join is a dead game. Haven't seen any replies on anyone from the DM.

@JohnP point buy or std array please
do you have a copy of the adventurer's league document by any chance?

mm...no, not yet.

4:43 PM
we're stealing some house rules from that document. Namely downtime days as currency, starting wealth (either take from your class+background or start at max for your class), and also factions

@waxeagle how many points on the buy?
27?

@JohnP yes

@Aaron thanks for the congrats. It's fun to be able to take a fantasy world I've been writing in for so long and turn into an adventure others can experience.

Same here.
I hope to adapt my purgatory world into a game eventually but it will be a bit hard because of the premise of the world.
It is a massive city where good and evil beings can exist in peace. Their quarrels are settled in an arena where they can fight but won't die.
Is also directly ruled over by a omnipotent deity who enforces the rules. Kinda hard to figure out how to run an adventure in somewhere like that.
Oh work meeting. brb
