3:00 PM
I feel lix after Max brooks Zombie Survival Guide and world war z books that any and all popular media of zombies should have never been done
Dude wrote a freaking epistolary zombie novel that was compelling enough to be a best seller with a terrible movie adaptation

Have you ever seen that youtube video on an short animation movie on Chtulhu - Mythos ?
It's amazingly done
Teenagers sneaking in a private pool

I feel the World War Z movie shouldn't have been done. I rather liked Zombie Survival Guide. :P

I also concur it was a stupid idea to make
the whole point of world war z was you were getting a post event reconstruction via interviews as people tried to get the total picture on it
and then hollywood makes it a brad pitt action vehicle

There's not a lot of good Z movies though...

@Saffron very true, even classics of the genre like dawn of the dead are actually pretty terrible as far as the medium of film goes

3:04 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith holy crap that movie is atrocious
I am a Legend was decent, same for resident evil 1

psh
Omega Man

But it's still not really what I'd expect from a Z movie
I'd love to see a zombie version of cloverfield/blair witch

In the post-zombie-apocalyptic future, colon Ceaser is your chess opponent

So long as we don't start attracting tumblr zombie activists protesting the need for zombie-positive films and literature.

@MadMAxJr wth
That even exist
Doh I'm on the internet, dumb me

3:08 PM
yeah theres been like 3-5 zombie rom coms in the last few years
Note: The Genre is for all intents and purposes dead when its used as a convenient rom-com setting.
this does make we long and dream of some ravenloft specific mechanics for horror and fear in either the DMG or a splat/sourcebook

Just a matter of time until someone makes a flick about a world of the dead being ravaged by NIGHT OF THE LIVING.

Same fate for poor vampires
From dawn till dusk will be remembered
Cthulhu hasnt had any rom com yet right?

not in film
i wouldnt be suprised though if there were some trashy cthulu romance stories sitting around the net or as ebooks

Ofc, we can't do anything about horny teenagers fan of cthulhu who never read a book, but decided to write a fanfic about his/her love with a cultist
rule 34 I guess

oh I mean theres that for everything
I expect erotic fanfic of everything but I mean like a legit ebook or pulp paperback

3:16 PM
@Saffron it needs a corollary "Rule 34(a): if it exists there is fanfic of it (b). it's probably slash too"

"legit" being used ever so loosely here

Cthulhu has had a musical though. "A Shoggoth on the Roof."

@MadMAxJr That sounds hilarious

I think there are DVDs of it.
I just loved the idea of Cthulhu presented as a stage performance.

Hatsune miku featuriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing THE DARK LORD CTHULHUUUuuuuuu

3:18 PM
hahaha
is it a straight parody of fiddler on the roof?
that could be rich

I'm not sure, I never got around to purchasing it.
@Saffron You laugh, but there are some bizzaro Hatsune Miku cyberpunk gothic-horror animations on youtube.

@MadMAxJr I don't want to know

@Saffron I didn't either. Thanks Internet.
And then, once you get as incredibly niche as humanly possible, make an RPG system for it..
Blow all of your money getting it published as a hardcover. Then watch it rot in your FLGS. (Friendly Local Game Store)

I played a game of High School girl RPG

FLGS do not exist, at least not for RPGs anymore

3:22 PM
We played anime girls in their everyday life in High school
That was hilarious

In my case, there are four LGS nearby. The lack of the F is the problem.

exactly
Like my game shop barely tolerates us Roleplayers

I didn't grow up here. I'm not one of the locals. So the local gaming groups seem to be the 'you're not one of us' mentality.

and from a monetary perspective I get it

@JoshuaAslanSmith weird, cause generally roleplayers also like other geekey stuff like board game and stuff

3:24 PM
RPG players drop very little money compared to CCG and LCG players
right
so heres the rub, I feel that most people are like myself and would pay 10 dollars more to support the local shop but everything that a big item (boardgames, RPG books, etc.) is 20 bucks or more higher than via amazon
I make a point to buy dice and game aids every so often

Yeah or more

but I know Im not making major purchases there and I feel like everyone I know has the same exact approach
whereas the card gamers, they have an incentive to buy in a shop because then they dont need to pay shipping for a few cards

@JoshuaAslanSmith this kind of over pricing should generally be justifies for better service

it does help that like 3 of the 4 partners who run the FLGS I go to are big into pathfinder

Unfortunately, it's not true anymore

3:27 PM
oh no the inverse it true
the help at the shop is generally pretty rude

It's hard to find a LGS that turns into a friend

which I get a bit they deal with trolls and socially inept people all day

@JoshuaAslanSmith they are too...

but I and I feel everyone who comes out for encounters, is notably polite and respectufl

@JoshuaAslanSmith You don't do that job if you don't like your own community

3:28 PM
oh yeah
Im also sorta becoming the default event leader for WOTC D&D stuff at my shop with zeroish support from the shop itself

I feel stupid here: What's LCG, CCG and (F)LGS?

Let's create a startup chain of LGS with training for staff to make it more enjoyable for our community all around the world!

which as much as I want the free swag I might just say eff it and buy everything as it comes out on drivethru (encounters seems to be doing this, I dont know if expeditions will)
FLGS is friendly (hahahaha) local game shop

Limited Card Game, Collectable Card Game

CCG is collectible card game (pokemon, yu-gi-oh, magic the gathering)

3:30 PM
Friendly Local Game Store

I always heard it as Living card game

LCGs have fixed, non-random sets.

Ahh... thanks everyone

so LCGs are inresponse to the money pit complaint about CCGs
you can buy all the expansions and miniexpansions if you want or you cannot, totally up to you

Some companies do okay with LCGs. Fantasy Flight Games Netrunner for example.

3:30 PM
yep
thats the biggie
and the LOTR LCG which is a co-op vs the game mechanics kinda game

FFG: Our games cost way more than other ones, but they're so dang nice you'll pay it anyway.

FFG is my favorite publisher
exactly

Twilight Imperium: Good luck teaching anyone how to play this.

there is a quality to the physical aspects of their games, the rulebooks, and they are on a whole generally designed above the average
haha
so I totally wanna pick up Twilight Imperium Rex
because its not that
and its way faster and simpler but still has a lot of hard choices
also
Space Cats

Dark Heresy: We got this license from Games Workshop AND WE CANT STOP MAKING BOOKS FOR IT.

3:32 PM
hahaha

They actually have two dedicated staff for 3rd party license management.

Descent 2nd edition is one of my top boardgames/rpgs of all time
Ive really really wanted to pick up Edge of the Empire

I have Descent 'Beta'. AKA the Doom board game.

Oh Ive played that

The armor rule is a tad different.

3:34 PM
I love descent 2nd edition because its like 4e without the prep, show up, I get to be a killer GM 100 percent and its part of the game and theres still loot, tactical decisions, and interesting dice rolls
really wanna pick up some descent expansions but we havent played core enough

All I know about that game is that freaking rat familiar that lets you have expanded line of sight can butcher monster placement.

might pick them up anyway for the class options
@MadMAxJr I feel like thats 1st edition

That's the only one I played.

2nd edition streamlined and balanced the game immensely
oh wow FFG is making a starwars descent type game

Doom was broken but I love it anyway.

3:36 PM
that makes 100 percent sense

FFG is /all/ about hugging the Star Wars license.

I feel like the do it justice, they acknowledge the EU and the original films in a true way
I am the bitterest of SW fans
but I am interested in Edge of the EMpire

I'm not an avid Star Wars fan, but one of my cohorts recently became so bitter over it he's asked we avoid discussing it. Something about the new films stating EU is not canon in any way, shape, or form?

@MadMAxJr George Lucas said the EU is not canon at all so that the new movies can ignore it.
or something like that

pretty much which is a rub for me but not that strong because of my background in film I totally understand the EU being not totally canon in anyway as it would hamstring any writer trying to be true to that huge wave of the content that is a bit messy
@zachiel there are tiers of SW canon
The Star Wars canon is what is officially regarded as "canonical", or officially part of a story, in the Star Wars media franchise. Unique compared to other forms of canon in other media works, the Star Wars canon involves "levels" of canonicity, with the highest levels being the "most" canon media, meaning their content is most accurate and non-contradictory in the overarching story. The highest level of Star Wars canon consists of the six released Star Wars theatrical feature films, along with the Star Wars animated film and television series The Clone Wars. The upcoming feature film Star Wars...

3:44 PM
My cohort seems to be of the opinion that it was the equivalent of taking all non-movie content and starting a barrel fire with it. Personally, as long as we don't have any more Gungans, I'm okay with it. :P

hah
so basically EU's canon status was already below TV series
which are below the six films

Ah yes, Clone Wars. The only spot to see General Grevious be something fairly awesome.

theres lots of cool stories in EU canon that could make for a great new trilogy but the issue is the EU is very much tied to the continuing adventures of luke han leia and their offspring which makes total sense for their marketability but all of those actors are too old to actually fill any of those roles
like nobody who wasnt a teem reading the teen EU books gives a damn about Jaina and Jacen solo
Im one of those people who read that stuff and some of it is admirably written for what it is but its all b-story pulp stuff set in a space opera universe
stories range from incredibly gritty, pseudo-realistic (tales of the Bounty hunters) to some very light hearted romps

I have friends in Japan who argue what is Gundam canon and not canon, so I guess it's a common thing for large franchises.

yeah
especially with lot of interations
I favorite gundam series is the red-headed stepchild of it all
G-Gundam

3:53 PM
Zanshin, Kairetsu, Tempakuran, look to the east, it's burning red!
Campy, full of horrible stereotypes, yet quite entertaining.
I carry it on a flash drive.
0083 Stardust Memory is debated, since the final scenes redacts the entire story arc.

Any 10k+ rep users feel like answering a question? I cannot figure out why a particular question was deleted, I remember it being a decent question, but now I can't look at it to determine what happened. I'm not saying it shouldn't have been deleted, but I'm just really wondering why.

Blarg
I'll look

> Well, you had 3 reopen votes and I was talking about it with Brian till it seemed like you bailed on the old question. How about you delete this one, do NOT do a new one, and we make the first one openable in the first place? -mxy
followed by edits to this and a reopen

Yep

ah, I see. I missed that part of the exchange when I was away. Thank you very much.
I was wondering what the user did wrong, but it appears they just basically merged a general and a specific question. ^_^

dat rep
I want to protect questions
I have no questions to protect

5:18 PM
I want the power to send large Russian men to slap posters once a day, at about 1:15 in the afternoon
Just, no matter what you're doing
Clock hits a quarter after 1
And BAM, slapped

lol any particular reason?

Diversify, not just Russians, but a rotating ring of soviet bloc angry men.

@MadMAxJr But if I stick to just Russians I can have them make Punisher references

hmmm yes ultra nationalists from all the former soviet republics
This is in one of my local bakeries, your comment about russians made me t hink of it

@JoshuaAslanSmith Because sometimes reasoned debate will not work where a good slappin' will at least cause the soul-harming behavior to cease.

5:22 PM
Unfortunately I do not think your AngryRussianMob.stackexchange.com will get much support.

hahaha
RacialStereotypes.Stackexchange.com

I just see every question being /deleted/ there.

For instance, a poster known as Jedipotter on GitP who has made her entire career thus far out of flame-baiting, haughtily insulting other play styles, crowing about how awesome her house rules are (while refusing to reveal them) and claiming that "perfect" players (defined here as players you can trust to exercise narrative agency and behave like mature adults) don't exist and thus all of our statements about them are invalid.

Like some kind of bait trap to keep admins busy all day closing material.

I'm going to repeat that last part again - in Jedipotter's world, anyone who isn't a DM is a sub-human Satan-worshiper out to ruin the game for the sheer joy of defiling something good

5:23 PM
hmmm it could be a proving ground for mods
yeah thats terribad
classic railroad gm vs murderhobos

... Note to self, Moderator Thunderdome.

has the same page tool been pushed to this person>?

Reasoned debate has thus far done absolutely nothing. But I bet you a daily slapping would help.
@JoshuaAslanSmith Months ago

no hope
dont engage

Unfortunately applied physical harm only seems to briefly cause a delay, followed by even more charged statements from people.

5:25 PM
ostracise, politely, as the insular thinker they are

@JoshuaAslanSmith Oh now! She's picked up defenders now. Would you like a link to the horrible thread?

hmmm that just made me think of one of my favorite character flaws for my favorite mary sue, honor harrington

The phrase 'Don't read the comments' is sadly growing wider in scope for me, in order to remain sane day to day.

@Lord_Gareth as a connoisseur of terrible personal politics (which this seems like) do please
Sometimes I like to dive in
Cause I liek to have a slow burn of anger generally

You'll need a vintage diving suit and someone to operate the air pump.

5:26 PM
I dont comment but I just read enough to confirm that I should never comment on said site

So like I read kotaku and Io9 to basically mock both of their articles on FB
haha

This is only the most recent in a long line of horror and pain
@MadMAxJr Sometimes you find gems in the comments, though! Like this one from Youtube: "Oh hey, that's what this song is! I heard it at the gay bar last night and couldn't figure it out." "Why were you at a gay bar?" "For the F*&%ing onion rings, why do you think?"

Youtube is the definitive example of 'Don't read the comments'.

@Lord_Gareth playing at this person's table already sounds like...

5:29 PM
I prefer a little more peace and order in my mind, with the occasional supplicant asking a well defined question.
... The computer AM would be the /worst/ DM.

only reason to play is to achieve a metaphorical victory for individualism triumphing against all odds
put an absurdist philosopher in there
would make a great research paper
this is for D&D right, and I assume like 3.5 or ADND

3.5
Jedipotter considers systems that encourage or permit narrative agency beyond what 3.5 does to be toxic to the hobby
And also believes 3.5 permits far too much leniency

“HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO DM. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION PIECES OF FAQ AND ERRATA THAT FILL MY LIBRARY. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH PAGE OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF BOOKS IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR PLAYERS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.”
3

For instance, one of her revealed house rules is that all summons have a cumulative chance to summon a hostile, uncontrolled creature of a CR high above the party's ECL
She does not tell her players this before the game

Okay I was making a joke, perhaps I was not too far off the mark for this person.

5:33 PM
@MadMAxJr wonderfully appropriated quote
how does this person maintain players

Perhaps it is against her rules to leave the game.

they either must live in a city and churn through people, have some low ego players, or a group of players that enjoy pain
every statement is flip the table walk out kind of things

@JoshuaAslanSmith She brags about her 80% turnover rate and claims that it's because her rules weed out 'problem players', leaving behind only the truly worthy
Like some kind of sick gaming eugenics program

.... That is totally against my logic of fostering a good table.

@MadMAxJr That would be because it's completely sociopathic

5:36 PM
hmmm not even eugenics like a very specialized selection criteria that in all probability creates hyper adapted players to one environment that would completely fail in any other environment.
basically she breaks and brainwashes players who are then institutionalized/stockholm syndrome and can never leave.

@MadMAxJr Also this pretty much describes my relationship to my players, in a nutshell
"I don't know why you people keep asking me to run games when you know how much I despise all of you."

hmmm this person could have a legit social/psychological handicap of some kind

This isn't eugenics, this is Unit 731. And if you know that reference, welcome to my little dark place.

You see Gareth, players haven't ever actually left her table. They just go to the basement gaming area...

5:38 PM
it was one of the secondary reading books for a college level WW2 history class I took

After which they are subjected to the most depraved gaming experiments.

and yes its pretty much takes the cake from all horror or sci-fi for misappropriation of science and terrible cultural norms

Games dissected and cut open /during play/.
Functional rules and methods viciously cut, modified, and re-inserted back into the host game.
Trying to picture a conversation taking place between AM, GlaDOS, and Shodan...
Toss in HAL 9000 and one of the later generation Terminators and they might be able to fill an RPG table.
.. Scratch out the Terminator, lets put Bender in there.
Kill all humans... as a free action.

6:00 PM
o/

6:21 PM
So @JoshuaAslanSmith, how's that thread working out for you? Is your soul bleeding yet?

I am much much more cynical and expecting of the failability of man
then you seem to expect
@MadMAxJr "When the history of my glory is written, your PCs shall only be a footnote to my magnificence. I am GM."
for the longest time Ive wanted to run a CP2020 campaign where the main NPC contact/job giver turns out to be a carbon copy of Shodan

I never finished SS2 sadly.

Which would work perfectly because none of my players have every played it
I replay it once in awhile
despite having a burned CD from when it was abandonware I instantly bought it when it was put on GOG.com
and Then almost bought it again when it hit steam because
Perfect combo of sci-fi horror and cyberpunk

I need to find the fan-made model update.

but the campaign wouldnt simply have been an SS2 ripoff, it wouldve also been a Neuromancer ripp off to
@MadMAxJr have you seen the case mod someone did?

6:35 PM
Can't say I have.

Hah. Lovely.

yep
oh and a ripp off of Deus ex
I wouldve merged all 3's ai stories together
damn need to plot this out
and then either run it in fate with CP2020 inspired aspects or actually due the cyberpunk conversion of DW
that Ive been thinking about for SO LONG

7:06 PM
Hello again.

user61230
Hello, @lisardggY!

Hello hello.
Quieted down here, I see.

It does that.

Indeed.
Any of you listen to any RPG podcasts? I'm trying to expand my range, but most of the ones I try, I dump after a single episode.

does Nightvale count as an RPG podcast?
(if not, then no)

7:20 PM
Nah, though I listen to it too.

I hear good things about Nightvale. A writer friend keeps bugging me to try it.

I mean mostly discussions about RPGs.

@MadMAxJr stop what you're doing and go listen (or better yet, go listen while you're doing whatever you're doing)

@MadMAxJr It's pretty good, though a bit uneven in quality. Takes a while to get into it.
But once you do, it's a fun little disturbed world.

Sadly I cannot nab it from here.
But if I can figure out iTunes bloody sorcery and get it grafted onto the podcast list in there, I can put it in queue.

7:23 PM
I found a coupe of good podcasts - Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff is pretty damn good, and it's by Robin D. Laws and Kenneth Hite, who've got serious credentials.

@lisardggY Shutup and Sitdown area boardgame review site but theyve just started playing Edge of the Empire and been doing podcasts about their experience
you want amazing star wars adventure (3 parts so far)

@JoshuaAslanSmith I'll give'em a shot, though I'm looking more for shows about theory rather than straight-up play experience.
Thanks.

ok, something slightly bothersome about capping out so much lately (I know complain complain), but it means I'm basically completely unawares of when my posts get upvoted after I cap.

user61230
You've capped literally every day for the past six days. Shhhhhhh. :P

Stackworld problems.
3

7:37 PM
hah
ive been on a slump, still getting weekly rep but I seem to miss all the overnight 5e questions that drop in

@Emrakul and 16 of the last 25, yeah

user61230
You're well on your way to Legendary.

are all of these people confused european rpg gamers
I wish we got more DW questions, Id love do badge up in DW

@Emrakul getting there, yeah. checked last week and I was only about half way

user61230
Hmm, odd, you're not listed under Epic.

7:39 PM
Watching my Dark Heresy answer sink because I didn't have the ability to link to a wiki from the office.

@Emrakul scuse me, half way to Epic
still a long ways off from Legendary
only at 31 cap days as of the last data explorer update
which was Friday

@waxeagle I hit the cap... mmm... twice. I wonder which ones they were, I can't remember.

@lisardggY it took me a long time to just get to mortarboard here. I didn't start capping out regularly until 5e dropped

But I've made at least 200 rep on 3 days.
Hmm.

I used to hit the cap a lot. Then I took an arrow to the knee

7:42 PM
@waxeagle I want to use my newly gained abilities of 15k rep
but there are no questions crying out for protection

user61230
@Lord_Gareth "I used to hit the cap a lot. Then an arrow hit mine."
2

Rep is meaningless. Actions are the true measurement. :P

There was a thing about hitting the repcap vs. reaching 200 total rep when downvotes/bounties are factored in, but I don't remember which one the badge counts.

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, we don't get too many questions needing it

@MadMAxJr Don't take away our Meaningless Internet Points!

user61230
7:43 PM
@lisardggY I'm pretty sure it counts days for which you reach the cap of reputation gained from voting.

@lisardggY IIRC mortarboard no longer factors downvotes. I think it still factors accepts/bounties though

is it basically only to prevent a slew of new answers on a pretty settled question that gets dredged to the top via edits?

@JoshuaAslanSmith pretty much
it's the anti-reddit defense
(and tbh a bunch of that is automated. It might now be more of a priv to remove it when it no longer needs to be tehre

There are currently 38 upvotes and 13 answers to an answer on SciFi.SE on whether a Jedi loses midichlorians if you chop off his hand.
*sigh*.

thats why Im not on Sci-fi
its utterly pedantic

7:45 PM
I remember a letter in a Dragon magazine, many years ago, asking how much do various body parts weight because his gnome character was just a teensy bit too heavy to ride his hippogriff and he was considering removing an arm.

my actual questions about identification or events in books get little to no rep and philosophical discussions get all the rep

@JoshuaAslanSmith Well, it took three years for the question to get there.

its a forum masquerading as a stack exchange

user61230
"But if I just shave some skin off my stomach, I'll be light enough to ride the hippogriff!"

Arqade seems to be getting hit with an influx of new users incapable of the most basic attempts at spelling, grammar, or not putting 'me too' in answers.

7:46 PM
@MadMAxJr downvote to hell
Im not on arcade because people have been overly brusque with me there
its like Look at my SE wide rep, I know what Im doing

@JoshuaAslanSmith Really? My experience is that high-level philosophical discussions are usually closed, and deep-delving into minutiae of a franchise's work is usually the rep-engines.
(For me as well, I answer a lot of Silmarillion questions)

I could spend all day trying to save of the answers there that have no capitalization or punctuation. But after the third day of trying to make reasonable fixes and seeing there's just /more/ terrible answers pouring in... Acceptable losses Arqade. Acceptable losses.

hmmm I might consider that philosophical debates

I'll just go back to Classless Dungeons and Proletariat Dragons.

@lisardggY this was the question the made me forever decide not to get involved with scifi
31
Q: Why didn't Aragorn keep going with the army of the dead?

ForceWhy did Aragorn not keep going with the army of the dead and overthrow Mordor and Sauron? As unstoppable as they seem to be in destroying all physical armies without any injuries, taking on Mordor itself wouldn't be an issue. Thus clearing the way for Frodo to destroy the ring and Sauron, or eve...

@JoshuaAslanSmith ...why? I suppose that answer wasn't quite accurate, but a better one ended up with twice the votes.

user61230
I suffer an immense pain whenever I see a question start with the words "How to" and end with "?"

user61230
"How to [fix a thing]?"

user61230
GAH

9:58 PM
@Emrakul How to mine for rep?
