Wow, some of the trolls that pitch up here are disgusting

Aug 20, 2023 20:32
@Adamant exactly. The whole thing is a joke. As we often say here, if you don't laugh, you'll cry.
Aug 20, 2023 19:30
The EFF got 6.35% in the last election, and that's the entire party, not the percentage of people who want to kill all whites. As a South African citizen, who grew up here and lives here currently, I think that neither side is correct. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, and I don't think genocide is as imminent as people make it out to be. Somewhere in the middle is right, some people are going to be violent in some areas, and that may be not race related violence, it may be gang violence and black on black violence too (or xenophobia against other African Countries' citizens).
Aug 20, 2023 19:30
@user27701 that's an extremely vocal, extremely small minority. Your average SA citizen just wants to go on with their lives.

5 weeks is way too soon to be taking on company processes (unless you were literally hired for that task) and comes off a bit arrogant because surely the employees that have been there longer already know about the deficiencies in their processes, and clearly things already are being done.
May 26, 2023 07:29
@mobileDev14 is this task part of your job description? Were you told to do this by your manager? Or is it something youve just taken it upon yourself? Did you speak to your manager about spending your time on this?

It even can go further: ALL single women go and try to fall pregnant as a right of passage into womanhood, because this means they can prove their fertility and get a desirable marriage/have her pick of partners. Any woman who is (eg) 25 and without a child is considered barren, because it's assumed she has tried and failed to have a child already.
May 15, 2023 17:18
I feel like the point is lost in the armour analogy. We don't need an analogy to explain a point. Just say that when barronness is extremely common, and a mother is extremely desirable, then a woman with an existing child is an indicator she can have more. I don't need 2 paragraphs of seemingly unrelated armour explanation.

@OpalE in my case, I think it was purely down to logistics. Marking (or paying people to mark) 2000 students worth of weekly homework questions just is impractical for everyone involved. Even just keeping track of who has returned the weekly set of homework questions would be impractical.
That said, we did have 'tutorial' classes run by TAs where students were split up into small-ish groups (100 or so?) and got to ask the TA questions, work through the homework answers, get help. Those were also voluntary (maybe there was a requirement to go to, like, 4 of them a semester or something?). I
Mar 23, 2023 13:00
To give an idea of numbers, I think the above math professor had >500 students in his lectures. I think my Calculus 1 course had like 2000 students enrolled, split over 3 lecturers.
Mar 23, 2023 12:46
That class had <40% pass rate. I think the first exam had a 25% pass rate. A lot of people dropped out. It had a reputation, a lot of people did it 2 or 3 times. But no one blamed the lecturer. He was extremely highly regarded as being one of the best professors in our university. Extremely highly respected. It was understood that if you failed, that was on you.
Mar 23, 2023 12:42
My calculus math lecturer said the following on the first lecture of the semester, while handing out homework sheets: "I won't ask for these back. I won't mark them. I won't see them again. They aren't part of your grade. But I will tell you one thing right now. If you do not do them, you will fail." I was determined to do them, and I passed because of it. There isn't even a need to make it 10%. No need to mark all that homework if they can use chatgpt to do it.

@Ivana I actually wrote one up, but I wasn't convinced it added anything to the other answers, or was enough of an answer on its own. My points have mostly been repeated elsewhere by others, anyway.
Mar 21, 2023 13:48
@DJClayworth Neermind that people are grumpy on flights: Stuck in a small seat, with limited ability to move, limited access to belongings, food they have no control over, and (now, also) no way to get away from the person next door who wants to spend the next 15 hours having a Deep and Meaningful Conversation and is completely oblivious to the social cues to stop talking.
Mar 21, 2023 13:48
My recommendation is to wear a fandom shirt you're into, carry around a favourite book (if you read, etc) or whatever appropriate to advertise your interests, or otherwise wear a statement piece of clothing/accessory that invites conversation. There are social norms for this (people will strike up conversation if they see you have something they have in common and want to talk). Brute-forcing it with a t-shirt is unnecessary at best, and inviting predators at worst.

I have genuine good faith that the school is not an abusive environment. She's happy at school, and as far as I can tell, they are genuinely good people who treat the children well. They're just doing too much for her, in my opinion.

Jan 26, 2023 08:08
@KevinWells Some chores do have a required time, others don't. It really depends on what the OP chooses. Expecting her to be involved in family mealtimes (including breakfast) is a great realistic option. I think we agree with the premise, though, enforcing wakeup for the sake of it is pointless, and giving her responsibilities also means more work to track/enforce (checking she did them, applying consequences if she washes dishes at midnight, etc), which is hard, but worth it, and how parenting should be done IMO. I'm a big positive discipline proponent.
Jan 26, 2023 08:08
"no activities that demand her to be up at any time so theoretically she could wake at 4:00 p.m. without impacting any schedules" is the root issue here. Why on earth not?! chores/work/family meals/family activities should all be part of her summer, especially under quarantine/lockdown. If she can get away with lazing around all day then you have bigger issues at play here. Don't say "you have to get up by 8am", give her responsibilities (like the adult she almost is) and let her work it out.

@JingleBells Wait, why does 10 USD -> 1000, but then 700 -> 2.45? Why not start a black market of robux and sell your 700 for (eg) 5 USD? They get it cheaper, you get more cash?
Jul 7, 2022 10:14
Thanks so much! this is really helpful
Jul 7, 2022 09:53
ooh I know about semiconductors
Jul 7, 2022 09:53
but it seems it's more complicated than that
Jul 7, 2022 09:52
no i don't haha I was just figuring it based on your explanation
Jul 7, 2022 09:50
so does that mean that transparent materials are by definition bad conductors in their nature?
Jul 7, 2022 09:44
@JohnRennie yes that does make sense
Jul 7, 2022 09:43
oh marvellous!

Jul 7, 2022 09:25
Is there maybe a better SE site?
Jul 7, 2022 09:24
Hi, I have a question but I don't know if it would be appropriate for the physics stack exchange. Or if it's too simple.
My 4yo wants to know if it's possible for a metal to be transparent. And I got mixed results on google. would it be appropriate for me to ask here?

May 30, 2022 19:39
@NeilMeyer In isolation, your statement "Hard to see a person with a gun as not being a threat to your or other peoples lives. " doesn't hold up. People possess firearms all the time and are not a threat. In the context of this question (implied possession within a school) is a different story. This is nitpicky because we all know the context of this question (and your statement) but this is law SE and I thought I'd point it out anyway because some people may read it more broadly.

Mar 9, 2022 15:19
As someone who frequently experienced the BSOD in the 90's. this question makes me feel old. It feels like just the other day.

Dec 11, 2021 17:39
But for someone else it could be rough to hear. That said, I can imagine if the student has missed deadline after deadline and in exasperation she's said something like this because the student just didn't get the picture, I can imagine that happening. And I can imagine some people thinking it's ok. I think it's a bit harsh but eh. Communication is hard sometimes.
Dec 11, 2021 17:36
I think she could personally hold this view, while not expressing it so bluntly. Giving the student deadlines and the opportunity to meet them and prove themselves (and if they don't, say they're not going to finish in time) is a way to make it less personal than saying they are inherently inadequate. I've had it said to me and it just made me want to prove that person wrong.

Nov 16, 2021 16:51
" With a phone call, you kinda have to answer it. " not really. What if you're in the bathroom? or generally unavailable? Just ignore it like you would a chat message.
Nov 16, 2021 16:51
Also, isn't a chat message from them also going to disturb your train of thought anyway?
Nov 16, 2021 16:51
How often do these calls occur? how many times a day/week? Also, do you have the option to just not answer? What if you're not at your desk?

@VScode_fanboy if your friend is looking for a job that's going to make the USA minimum wage in sri-lanka, he may be looking for a long time.
Oct 29, 2021 10:00
I did already it's up there
Oct 29, 2021 09:58
@VScode_fanboy no I can't because I have no idea what a good offer in sri-lanka is
Oct 29, 2021 09:13
That said, the cost of living is different in sri-lanka so it's difficult to compare.
Oct 29, 2021 09:12
@VScode_fanboy $2/hour is extremely low in a lot of countries, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage. it's 1/4 of the minimum wage in the USA.

I would be interested in being a modorator of freelancing. I used to be extremely active there but deleted my account and lost all the rep (eg, this answer was mine: freelancing.stackexchange.com/a/1623/27218). I don't know if I'd be a candidate with no rep and no recent activity, unfortunately.

See this question: How to diplomatically decline a new tech lead role in a messy outsourced project to go back to a regular programmer role? It's similar, in that (1) they're doing managerial work without a position, and (2) getting involved in tasks that aren't in their skillset. The situations are different but the answers may be relevant.
Oct 27, 2021 15:25
" mentoring, integration of other Data Scientists code, debugging, testing, client presentations" sounds like you've become a manager (or at least a mentor) of some kind. Did you start out with data science stuff and your position changed over time? or was it like this from the start? how long have you been in this company?
Oct 27, 2021 15:25
also, is the work you do tangential to Data Science? ie are you mentoring in data science, debugging that stuff too, etc? do you use your skills even if you're not actively developing code (or w/e)

Aug 19, 2021 20:29
@Dan precisely. I worked 80 hours a week for an insanely stressful startup. Paid me so much I completely paid off my house. Then I left. It was great at the time, but never ever doing that again.

@RockPaperLz-MaskitorCasket I suspect in the case of an emergency transplant, the POTUS staff probably have a procedure and expedited protocol to get the POTUS where they need to be ASAP.

Even loggers can have work arounds, but @Jarvis seems convinced she's away by her status, and at least this way she has a chance to indicate when she is working. What if she has no idea he is going by her status and just thinking it doesn't matter?
Nov 13, 2020 13:51
@TheVal that's the thing, if she is an employee in the traditional sense of the word, using work equipment who happens to be at home, then they are in control of her pc and could just put a logger on it. If she's a contractor then this whole question is pointless as long as she's compliant with her contract terms.
Nov 13, 2020 13:46
@BrianDrake Exactly! There isn't any evidence. @Jarvis it's obnoxious and many contractors hate this suggestion, but what about asking her to install a time tracking/logger software on her PC? And does she need to do tasks like reading, or writing on paper?
