A: How safe is South Africa for white tourists in 2023?

Sally Kilpin FirthAs a South African, the precautions you have listed in your post (for people of all ethnicities) are MORE than adequate to ensure your safety. In my opinion, there is no hatred of (or targeted violence against) any race. Unfortunately (and again in my opinion), our crime stats are as a result o...

"In my opinion, there is no hatred of (or targeted violence against) any race" I was told by a South African farmer that muggers are targeting white farmers, because they are considered as land thieves in South Africa. I never went there personally though, so all I have is accounts from someone who lived there ever since they were born.
So what is your tidy explanation that dismisses Malema and ten thousand black South Africans saying to kill whites, finger guns out and machine gun sounds included? This is a rhetorical question, since i don't think anyone wants to hear excuses for what is overt racism and calls to genocide. Your answer might be accurate in overall safety with the OP's rules, but the fact that open genocide could break out at any moment is apparent.
@user27701 You mean it did not break out yet? I was told new cases of white farming families getting mugged and raped almost became frequent occurrences.
@Clockwork yes, lots of people believe that. However: "if we compare crime rates for South Africans generally and for farmers, we find that farmers are far less likely to be the targets of violent crime than the general population. That’s true both for murders and for other “contact crimes” such as burglary, sexual assault and attempted murder." washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/05/15/…
@llama Stats of likelihood compared to general population would not cover a sudden increase, would they?
@Clockwork Idk, but it's hard to believe that "shoot to kill" and machine gun chanting won't motivate violence eventually.

@user27701 there were 55 murders in 2021 and 50 in 2022 according to AfriForum (a pro-white farmer group). As the charts in the wapo article show, the rates have been roughly constant or declining for decades. Would have to be a truly unprecedented sudden increase for their murder rate to even approach that of the rest of the population.
@llama I'm not an expert in data analysis, but the first questions that would come to mind are: "do these graphics take into account that the general population is a bigger pool than the amount of farmers? (i.e. putting the data on the same scale)" + "does it take into account that the statistics inevitably fall when there are less people to be mugged after a family passed away?". That being said, I think I'm going to avoid turning the comment section into a debate (at least more than it already is).
Thank you for your answer, also thanks for all the comments. It's nice to get an insight from somebody who lives in SA, because you might be able to judge the actual situation as best as possible. I hope that the situation stays like that (or does get better obviously), both for my vacation as well as for all the SA citizens, because the criminal records are high enough already and don't need additionally racist motivated crimes. Still, I wonder how it is possible for a politician like Malema to chant such songs and don't face any punishment afterwards. Thank you and all the best, Stefan
@llama - Without condoning murder (obviously), I think it is worth recognizing that in many foreign countries, such as the USA and some European countries, murders of White farmers in South Africa serve a similar political purpose to persecution of Christians in some Muslim-majority countries: to stir up domestic sentiment against Black or Muslim groups. This can be seen in the focus on attacks against a subset of White people: while attacking someone because of their race (or at all, really) is never acceptable, Black South Africans continue to be disproportionately exposed to violent crime.
@Clockwork they're per capita rates, so yes. The fraction of either population who are murdered is still very small so the second effect is negligible.
@user27701 that's an extremely vocal, extremely small minority. Your average SA citizen just wants to go on with their lives.

@stanri Political science studies indicate it treasures less than 10% of a population to effect change, if they are dedicated enough. "That's a vocal minority" is always true.
The EFF got 6.35% in the last election, and that's the entire party, not the percentage of people who want to kill all whites. As a South African citizen, who grew up here and lives here currently, I think that neither side is correct. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, and I don't think genocide is as imminent as people make it out to be. Somewhere in the middle is right, some people are going to be violent in some areas, and that may be not race related violence, it may be gang violence and black on black violence too (or xenophobia against other African Countries' citizens).
@Obie2.0 Oh, yeah, well then it's okay, right? Let's excuse horrific behavior because of other bad behavior. The "disproportionate" experience of crime is self-perpetuated. It's well known that violence is typically done among associates, not strangers. That is to say, the majority of violence done to South African blacks is done by other blacks. Same for whites attacking whites, and in other countries. This is more lies with statistics, where you try to make some spurious connection between personal violence and political violence.
@user27701 - You may wish to work on your reading comprehension.
@stanri - I had not been too familiar with the EFF, but looking at the Wikipedia page, I definitely think you must be right that their voters cannot have any single consistent ideology. After all, they are an anti-imperialist party that supports Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a pro-LBGTQ party that invites people who want to ban homosexuality to give speeches.

@Adamant exactly. The whole thing is a joke. As we often say here, if you don't laugh, you'll cry.
