I was thinking it might have been madoka magica. not sure though. the closest thing I got was tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Memes/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica, which does mention "we need to go wider", but doesn't elaborate to describe the meaning of the joke.

if my memory serves me correctly, there's a certain anime where the fanbase has an in-joke about the character art style making the faces wide, and fans reacting to fanart where the faces aren't wide, or even at canonical width needing to be wider- Ex. just commenting "wider", or "needs to be wider"- but my attempts to web search which anime this joke is related to have repeatedly failed, so maybe I just somehow made this up. does this sound familiar to anyone?
