@kilisi I've got far too many health issues to keep going. One of the medications that I need to function at all, takes my ability to concentrate. I've got time, I may go for a consulting job, sales, or a trainer.
Feb 25, 2024 23:01
@motosubatsu Nevermind, I found it. Still in Beta, and no questions being released in over a year. wow.
Feb 25, 2024 22:06
@motosubatsu What happened to that stack that was about social skills? Is it still around?
Feb 24, 2024 21:50
My health finally caught up with me. Permanant Disability.

Will try something new eventually
Dec 9, 2023 14:43
Just wanted to stop by, I'm out on disability, and my doctor told me I have more lives than a cat. At this point I don't buy green bananas.
Dec 4, 2023 19:02
Anyone left skulking about.
Dec 4, 2023 19:00
The is the ghost of Christmas past. Boo.
Jan 3, 2023 18:53
Happy new year, two new years I didn't think I would see.
Sep 13, 2022 15:04
@motosubatsu Goodness, I have been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.
Sep 13, 2022 12:41
Hello from Mr Codger's neighborhood
Aug 12, 2022 12:49
There is a difference between asking "How do you do this" and "I am stuck, I have tried XYZ, gone online, and couldn't find any answers there, and checked some videos, I've gotten this far, I just need help to get past this.
Aug 12, 2022 12:33
.
That's what they mean by not taking up other developer's time. You should know enough to be able to get to work a while without interrupting anything.
Aug 12, 2022 12:32
Back in the ancient days of books and when Google was just an idea some college kids had, the answer to most inquiries was "RTM", or "READ THE MANUAL". or, the less polite "RTFM". I'll leave it to your imagination what the "F" stands for.

The point is, the more work you put in to finding the answers yourself, the more people in general will want to help you.
Aug 12, 2022 12:25
BUT, you can find out anything.

"we don't want someone who will take up other developer time for 8 hours for 2 months to understand" = "We want you to do your own research and formulate intelligent questions". In this age, where most answers are at your fingertips, people will get annoyed when the answer is a 30 second google search away.
Aug 12, 2022 12:18
I am starting over and leaving behind legacy technologies, from where you could LITERALLY know everything, out into the world of today, and everything has changed. It's daunting. The thing to remember is that there are a wealth of free tutorial videos on how to code anything. Don't be intimidated by the code base, just focus on what you are responsible for. NOBODY can know everything.
Aug 12, 2022 12:15
@localhost The interview process for IT is BRUTAL, and the industry is no better. It's a principle reason I have not left my job. Don't take it personally. As Motosubatsu said, they want a self starter.
Jul 20, 2022 18:17
@zmike I'm too old for this.... Mass retirements to the point where we have over 100 unfilled job openings
Jul 6, 2022 17:24
@Kilisi I've just been busy as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest. In related news, I think that the 14 hour days I have been working bode well for my continued employment
Jun 28, 2022 16:58
@shoover That's another thing, so many definitions of "white"
Jun 21, 2022 15:17
@J.Doe I am an autistic savant. I am very good at what I do.
Jun 21, 2022 14:47
Yeah, it was worth the 14 hours, because I demonstrated to the new team that I'm worth it. I went from ignorant of the system to creating an application in one day, albeit a long one, but I needed to mark my territory
Jun 21, 2022 13:07
I had some doubts that I would be able to keep up after the stroke, but I certainly can
Jun 21, 2022 13:06
@motosubatsu Well, I pulled a 14 hour day yesterday. My job is changing 100%. Not doing vb, vba, office automation anymore, they've thrown me into the deep end of Java robotic process automation.

New tools, new skills, new language, new procedures, new team. Same employer. High pressure, and I LOVE it
Jun 21, 2022 11:27
crickets chirping
Jun 9, 2022 18:47
@zmike I hope he doesn't rely on his sterling personality to get help
May 31, 2022 17:44
@motosubatsu I have seen both actually. This is how I learned that I was not cut out for management (Peter Principle)
May 24, 2022 15:01
I started out as a music and education major, and ended up in computers
May 24, 2022 14:31
@Kilisi It's getting like that here. Degrees are being given out for the most useless of majors and tens of thousands in debt where your degree is worth about as much as the rag you use to wipe the counters with at the starbucks you work at
May 24, 2022 13:26
It's gotten worse, there is even such a thing as "cake gender", complete with the accompanying neo-pronouns
May 24, 2022 13:24
@Kilisi We're not that educated. Even as old as I am, I was never exposed to the classics, so I went out and bought them on my own, including the strange case of Doctor Jekyll and mister Hyde, Aristotle's Ethics. The thing is is that I was always an avid reader. Kids come out of school these days and don't know how to think. They are taught to obey authority without question. Very easily lead. Remember all that pronoun nonsense a few years ago in here?
May 24, 2022 12:17
@Kilisi That's another problem. People have come to think if it's not on the internet, it's not real. We have a particular problem of being so dumbed down in America. People think everyone is lying to them unless it's coming from people they are inclined to believe
May 24, 2022 03:43
@Kilisi Most people in the "First world" countries forget that. The ones who do have parents or grandparents who reminded them.
May 23, 2022 13:01
@Kilisi. Ukraine still remembers the Holodomor, which millions were deliberately starved to death. Holodomor is a new word that means "Murder by starvation", and it was created ti describe that event. Ukraine does not see surrender as an option
May 19, 2022 16:04
@Kilisi yeah, I think that calling for thermonuclear war would be a tad bit more inflammatory, LITERALLY
May 17, 2022 14:05
@JoeStrazzere Great advice
May 17, 2022 12:42
@J.Doe I second the opinion of Dark Cygnus. Wait at until at least one week after you stop getting answers. People often skip over questions that have accepted answers
May 11, 2022 18:45
@motosubatsu Thank you.
May 11, 2022 17:54
Present, and on it!
May 11, 2022 12:39
@DarkCygnus I wish this place would liven up a bit. IT seems to me that we were far more inclusive before we were "inclusive"
May 5, 2022 18:13
@zmike Here it's a big thing, but only if you wear white shoes AFTER labor day. We take fashion very seriously here
Mar 31, 2022 13:12
@AIQ Here is one of life's secrets: Everyone is faking it through life. Everyone's life is in upheaval, and everyone is very damaged.

In that respect you are no worse off than anyone else. I assume they know what they got in hiring you, so you don't have to hide your weaknesses in some areas. Go out, ask for enough help to get you started. Maybe tell someone who can help that you want to get as ready as you can to make life easier for the supervisor when she comes back.

Be eager, don't be a afraid to ask for help. Every last employee has had a first week at work. Find out who is he
Mar 22, 2022 20:00
@AIQ I'm on the sixth year of my 10 week temp job. Just start that six months contract and impress the hell out of them. Show them that you may have placed second on the interview, but you're number 1 on the job. Do more than is expected of you, and give it your all. Treat this as a six month interview and blow their doors off. It's a win-win. Either you are hired as a perm, or you've built up an impressive record
Mar 22, 2022 17:15
I had a good answer for the "moral" objections question, but I dropped it
Mar 22, 2022 17:08
@zmike Ah, the classic RTFM! So many problems would be resolved. I see that, but I still think that if the OP kept his eyes on his own work, he'd have saved everyone a great deal of grief
Mar 22, 2022 13:49
@motosubatsu I like to try to give the newbies a fighting chance here. I tried to ask the question the user intended to ask, rather than close it unceremoniously. Don't let it out that I'm a nice guy. It will ruin my reputation
Mar 22, 2022 13:43
Old Lamplighter's curmudgeonly rant of the day:

I hate the word "Fair". It is misused. The people who use it the most don't want fairness, they want things to go their way.

I once read a short story where a genie was granting one wish per customer. The protagonist tried to outsmart the genie by wishing for "exactly what he deserved". It went about as well as you can guess.

I'm personally glad that life is unfair. I'd hate to think I deserved even half of what I've been through in this life, and shudder to think that I may have deserved worse.

Q: How to proceed in new role?

A DugganI had turned down this role last year, and stepped down from a management role. I took the time to get better in my old role and become more confident. The opportunity came around again, so this time I jumped on it. (Internal transfer) The new position is more visible and will give me more oppo...

Hi everybody, I just edited this post from a newbie. Show them we are friendly :D

Nov 7, 2022 19:25
@Neo no time to do it either eh?

Apr 15, 2022 04:46
@ColleenV 100% spot on. I thought this attitude died in the 1990s.
