Q: Why is "iron" pronounced "EYE-URN" but not "EYE-RUN"?

SphinxI just noticed that the word iron is pronounced EYE-URN instead of what the spelling suggests. I have always been pronouncing it "EYE-RUN" but I just checked its pronunciation and it shocked me a bit. So in UK English, it is /aɪən/ and in US English, it is /aɪrn/ according to the Cambridge Dictio...

@GaurangTandon You can ask what ever you like. If some one asks another one, the community can choose between the two. If you are feeling uninspired check out example from the 2016 Questionnaire Collection

@WilliamR.Ebenezer FYI: there is an astrochemistry tag.

Keep in mind we are human, mistakes happen, things fall through the cracks. I have had to say sorry a few times myself.
Apr 15, 2019 01:08
@WilliamR.Ebenezer I think your analysis was correct but I think your justification could have been misinterpreted. Also I think reviewers tend to be more discerning to approve tag only edits if they do not substantially improve the post. I do think a better justification would have been either 1.) this is about mining not geological chemistry OR 2.) This question is not within the scope of the tag.
Apr 13, 2019 18:41
@Avka if you have time from your exams check out the 2015 and 2016 question collections for inspiration as to questions you might like to ask.
Apr 13, 2019 18:38
@Avka To add to ortho's point people do occasionally go through cycles of lurking and participating. I've been here 3 years and change but have only been active in more than just answering main the last ~8-9months. I think when people have the opportunity to say "I've been busy with X but that is over so I would like to help more going forward, I don't spend as much time with X but still managed to do this and that" we will get a more holistic view of the candidates.
Apr 13, 2019 16:01
@Avka Some people are active in their own way. For example Jonsca hasn't posted on main since 2014 but is still active in the moderation of the site and meta.

@Martin-マーチン I usually think of synthetic chemistry as designing a sequence need to produce a compound, experimental chemistry is more about the actual exectution. e.g. synthetic chemistry - I need cryogenic conditions with dry atmosphere to perform a sensitive reaction; experimental chemistry - I use dry ice to acheive cryogenic conditions and molecular sieves to achieve a dry atmosphere. I would say they compliment each other but are not synonyms.

Q: Propagating Uncertainties for a Dilution to make a Standard Curve

Hamza QayyumSo I made a standard/calibration curve for $\ce{CuCl2}$ (Absorbance vs Concentration), and to do that I had to start off with an initial concentration of $\ce{CuCl2}$, which was $\pu{0.5 M}$, dilute that to get a lower concentration, take the absorbance reading (at $\lambda_\text{max}$), and repe...

I just edited two posts to change . Could someone make it a synonym of ? I felt this was trivial enough to not use meta.
Apr 25, 2019 20:24
@Martin-マーチン I think the concept is helpful, Karsten posted a new link to a different article. That said, TBH for the amount of work it would take to rehab this question, I would rather post a better one myself and mark this one as duplicate.

@StephanS I do think the asking for legal advice close reason could benefit by being expanded. We may also benefit from some canned comments. See: this meta post from Chemistry.SE for an example of something that might be helpful here.
