Maybe characterA and if its a perfect square -> use characterB? Or should I just abandon similar ideas?
Nov 7, 2024 13:08
As PHPer this site rarely offers a chance for a nice answer, so I kinda stopped
Nov 7, 2024 13:08
I remember that at the time I aimed for a beginner-ish challenge, with some motivation to add creative solutions, but 10yr younger me didnt think that through enough :)

Active is a bit more than I am here, but I am active on other SE forums, so I get a notification :)

I've rephrazed it a bit. No need to specifically call OP an AH, but kept the intention that it could be considered a AH move.

Would be a shame if you keep forgetting your personal phone, wouldn't?

If the potential employer is right and it is a human friendly enviroment, this job might actually be a nice chance. Maybe you think you want a big company, but a medium one could give you a lot more freedom (at least in my experience)

Didnt downvote, but to counter the "what if he requires any clarification", this is a fizzbuzz: for(i=1; i<=100; i++){ echo i + ' '; if(i%3===0){ echo 'Fizz';} if(i%5===0){echo 'Buzz';} echo "\n";} . I've timed myself, that was 40secs of work.

Maybe a useful aproach: Do a little more than the minimum. Aim on not being the last and things could turn out fine, you dont appear on a radar. You 'tried', and it cost minimal. Just try not to be last, that spot is remembered :)

Mar 19, 2021 20:38
I think a relevant question would be: Is this a direction you want to go in? Because to me it sounds like you're going. Could be a few new challenge, or not what you have in mind, but I think its time to start thinking about it.

Feb 19, 2021 13:45
Offtopic: Some comments/answers suggest that you change aproach, if you agree it could serve as a good example of admitting you're incorrect: "I might have expected something incorrectly, I apologize. [the rest of the other answers here]".

I'd like to say that I can admire that you recognize your own anger clouding objective judgement. Thats a difficult skill.

Jan 13, 2021 09:41
I think "worth about $920" does explain a lot. It might not look the 920$ it cost OP, but it won't look like 20$ either, obviously this was a mistake. You can't tell me you 'they had no idea' it wasn't 20$. There might be various (possibly valid) reasons they dont want to give it back, but not because they couldn't know.
Jan 13, 2021 09:41
IMO this is borderline stealing, but as there is no proof of that and there has been a mistake on OPs side, I don't suggest going there.
Jan 13, 2021 09:41
I suggest you read the linked topic in the TS :) That answers some of you assumptions :)

A car going 100 km/h. Try to stop that. What do you need? Counter momentum or enough mass to stop the car
Sep 21, 2020 17:49
An possible analogy that might help you feel/visualize the question: Supose there is a 1000kg car and you want to stop them. How hard must you hit them to make that work and keep in mind that friction doesnt exists?

I keep reading "Why would an adventurer use a frog sword?" which opens a whole scala of new questions...

Suggestion to add: Most IT people dont like change. So the fact they're all looking for change, is a red flag. In my experience, if they have no reason to leave, they're very loyal.

FYI: That Jetbrains editor is worth it's digital weight in gold. For web-development, PHPStorm is the goto-editor (almost) every serious programmer uses.

Somewhat ironic; Asking the question like this could be more harmful than the deed itself.

My guess is that the world will team up the exact same way we're handling global warming now: Not that well. Personal greed will intervene untill its to late

By local, do you mean if the domainname points to the same server? then yes
Apr 3, 2019 16:15
My VPS came with postfix, so I went with that. I've now created a extra user which I (think I ) now should be able to use, yet it gives 'auth failed'. I can log into a shell so the UN/PW combo is correct
Apr 3, 2019 16:13
Im a programmer, wanting to learn more about servers. I have server experience, but nothing about email
Apr 3, 2019 16:13
Eh, to be fair, I dont know where one ends and the other starts
Apr 3, 2019 16:09
I dont minder debugging, bug "Disconnected" isnt much to go on :')
Apr 3, 2019 16:08
Is there a way to get more info, this isnt telling me much?
Apr 3, 2019 16:08
Meh, all I'm getting is
```Apr 3 18:05:52 mail dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts in 4 secs): user=<[email protected]>, method=PLAIN, rip=::1, lip=::1, secured, session=<SOMETHING>```
Apr 3, 2019 16:00
I have Ubuntu, try a few tutorials, all not working. I purged postfix, trying clean now
Apr 3, 2019 15:41
Turns out that configuring mail on a server isnt as easy as I assumed heheh
Apr 3, 2019 15:40
Hello, anyone here got some skill for mail on ubuntu?
Jan 3, 2019 16:07
This answer is not that usefull IMO. I suggest you add a section on how to respond to the boss when he asks why you are leaving.
I wholeheartedly disagree with this answer, to the point that I'd downvote more if I could. It's a "bonus" skill, not a requirement. Everyone with some common sense can see this is a joke, to lighten a dull job ad. The job ad for my current job did the same thing (but with Smash Bro's) and it's awesome here. Work isnt only work, it's a mayor part of your life, be sure it's also enjoyable. People really need to stop getting triggered by these things. Don't like the job ad? Skip it. Other people have other interests. Not hurting anyone? Skip it.
Dec 13, 2018 07:28
It's listed as a bonus skill, not a hard requirement. It's a little joke. If you're capable, but suck at SNES, you're still getting the job. If you don't like this joke? Skip the ad, go to the next one, instead of getting offended by such small stuff. Not everybody is alike, not everybody has the same humour. Don't feel this is a match for you? Guess what: Skip it.
I agree with this answer up until the "i'd be looking for employtement elsewhere". If HR sides with the manager then yes, go elsewhere. But a "bad" manager, who appearantly hasnt got the company as best interest is fixable at this point.
Sep 5, 2018 05:21
Basically "No, but yes."?
Jun 21, 2018 21:11
Maybe it's a friendly fellow in real life and when you hear his tone of voice, it's a friendly mail. Could also be that he isn't, but making him the bad guy before knowing that, is kind of behaving like a ESED :) But I get the feeling I'm the only one thinking this haha.
Jun 21, 2018 21:11
If time is a issue, 'Rick' could always ask for a proposed solution, but now two people have spend time trying to solve it, where it's the task of 'Rick', not 'Morty' to do so. ('Rick' should still try to solve it, as it's a good skill to develop, but get feedback on your solution after it's fixed, compare it to the applied fix)
Jun 21, 2018 21:11
Wow no. He sends a polite answer explaining his motivations. His "going in fresh" is actually a very good method, because the solution 'Morty' provided might seem like a good solution, but that doesnt make it one. Especially from a junior, you might want to double check everything, as they simply have less experience, thus might provide solutions which don't work very well, but only experience call tell you why.
Jun 21, 2018 14:31
Yes, he might've tried working with proposed solutions and found out that he actually is better of starting with a blank slate so he can decide for himself. Might've been phrazed a bit better, but I dont think this mail is that passive agressive as everyone suggests :)
Jun 21, 2018 14:31
No, what (I think) he says that he indicates he prefers not to get a solution, because otherwise he has to wait a few days.
Jun 21, 2018 14:31
And this is the other problem I find with most answers: "says you don't value their input". That is 100% an interpretation. I didnt come to that conclusion at all, only after The previous comment you just made :) Maybe it's a friendly fellow in real life and when you hear his tone of voice, it's a friendly mail. Could also be that he isn't, but making him the bad guy before knowing that, isnt a solution which should be suggested.
Jun 21, 2018 14:31
The issue I have with most answers here is that if he prefers the "dont give me info, I want the blank slate aproach", how should he phraze it?
May 16, 2018 20:57
was typing an answers before the lock, but I'll summarize: Your site is a good portfolio item. Code is neat enough, modern, fast enough, a bit big and you have a 404. Technically it is fine. Visually it is as well, but the UI of the first section throws me off. It has a few words and a dark background. IMO it should tell me something interesting right away. You might also want to consider a contact, lower the threshold of contact.
I don't think that one interuption after multiple encounters is that big of a deal.
Jan 20, 2018 19:13
Also, keep in mind that you just did your job. The higher-ups decided that this was written-warning-level worthy, not you. You are not responseble for others actions (like these at least).
Oct 25, 2017 23:18
It might very well be that because you have less experience you were hired, because Jim asked for too much money. Or maybe the interviewer saw something else he'd like more than at Jim.
You mean like a camera timer? Just change 'flasher' to 'ignition'
