3:00 PM
@JasonBourne Thank you.

Wow, an update for IE6 just hit the shelves.

@RegDwighт Thankfully, I no longer need to care about IE6, so I won't be installing it.

I'm just saying.

well, last year I would have cared.

@RegDwighт Wait. How would you know, unless … ?
We need to drag you into the 21st century.

user19161
3:01 PM
@RegDwighт Use IE10 on Windows 8 already!

Just when you thought the thing has been deader than all doornails for several years...
@MετάEd this is how.

@JasonBourne Nobody likes Windows 8.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I like its logo.

@JasonBourne But do you like it's trainwreck of an interface? I posted a screenshot a few minutes ago...
19 mins ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
user image

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I say this mostly because I can't imagine 99 % of kids would care about shades of grey. It's an adult thing, I should hope.
Bai!

3:03 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I saw a related image on Reddit the other day, but I can't find it for the life of me.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I haven't seen the details, but it looks like GNOME 3, so not a big problem for me.

As “kiosk researcher” he sits bloggend full unhealthy enthusiasm apart with magazines.

Reddit is unsearchable. Even more unsearchable than ELU.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 lol

Gotta love the Google Translate.

Q: Does the letter i serve as a consonant in words like onion and view?

BohooSome more words: union, behavior, Daniel. And the second i in opinion, familiar, brilliant, California. I am especially concerned with American English.

Onion? Consonant? Wut?

@Cerberus Kids have opinions. I bet if I built two identical models, in new grey and old grey, my kids would like the new one better.

user19161
I am downloading Fedora 18 now. The image is 1.5 times the size of Fedora 17. Maybe they decided to include the office suite this time.

user19161
If there is no office suite, I would be wondering why it is so huge.

@RegDwighт It's a dupe of my question of "when is Y a vowel". People are not taught that there are more than just consonants and vowels.
@Kosmonaut! Good morning

Hi

user19161
3:08 PM
The Kosmonaut is here.

Has anyone else tried Duolingo?

OMG OVER 9000 Lawlers.
0
Q: How to describe the students who don't study hard.

StallmanI want to describe a situation here: The students who study hard usually get better grade, but in contrast the students who didn't study hard usually get poor grade. However, I don't want to use "the students who didn't study hard " to depict the other students.(Because lots of vocabularies...

I got as far as signing up.

@Kosmonaut I did! Just three days ago or so.
Saw it on the Grammar subreddit.
Registered and tried out German and French.

I am starting to find it very frustrating.

3:09 PM
I just used the keyhole icon to skip most of the stuff.
No idea how useful it can be for actually learning an unknown language from scratch.
Probably not at all.

@RegDwighт Probably more like 0.9 ll.

No, not really.

gasps, hides behind refrigerator

Translating is not a great way to acquire a language in general, and the random nature of the sentences doesn't help either.
But there is something more annoying about it.
I wanted to refresh my German, and so I was going through and testing out of all the early stages.

I started with topic 1, lesson 1 on German.

3:11 PM
But now I find myself failing sentences at least a third of the time, when my translation is 100% correct.

It drove everybody in the office crazy because the woman would read everything aloud. And as you say, the sentences are mostly completely random (and the voice is computer-generated).

So I keep reporting them but I end up just going through trying to remember the exact translations that are allowed.

@Kosmonaut I used the "my suggestion should be accepted" link at least once.
But for the most part I just shrugged and moved on.
@Kosmonaut it's even worse if you don't do the lessons in order, but skip a couple and miss the introduction of certain vocabulary.
Though I must say at times I was really surprised at the variety of alternatives accepted.

Sometimes I am as well, and in the early lessons I almost never had a problem.
But in the later stages, it is madness.

Completely unrelated ways of explaining the same thought with barely a word in common.
@Kosmonaut only natural. Most people have done the easy lessons, so they will have plenty of suggestions to work with.
But only two-odd people will have done lesson 5192.

3:16 PM
@RegDwighт Yes, that makes sense.

> This proposal has reached 100% commitment. We are preparing for its launch and expect to create it soon.

But, in any case, it's not working!

I completely forgot all about it.
Must give it another try.

So the onion question. Is the i a vowel, or a semi-vowel?

I wanted to try Spanish and Portuguese as well.

3:17 PM
'grats, @Reg.

Though both were marked beta.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It's a /j/

@KitFox thanks.
@Kosmonaut for me the I in onion is an /i/.

@Kosmonaut That's what I thought, but I found this: /ˈʌn yən/ online

God that's like a German trying to speak with a French accent.

3:18 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's fine... some people use /y/ for /j/ but it's not strictly correct.

And it looks like Turkish.

But /j/ is what was meant.

@Kosmonaut It was dictionary.com :)
@Kosmonaut so /ˈʌn jən/, then

user19161
Why did someone have to downvote my vice versa answer? Am I supposed to include its 9000 variants? Is four insufficient?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Often dictionaries will choose some sort of variant of IPA (or something completely different), although shame on dictionary.com for actually calling it IPA
If you look up something obvious like "use" you can see they use /y/ consistently.

user19161
3:21 PM
@kosmo How's your kid?

@JasonBourne He's, like, awesome.

user19161
@Kosmonaut Wow, you use like like girls do.

He's speaking a lot and using signs

@JasonBourne translation: "he's awesome, if you will".

@Kosmonaut Time for a second one, then?

3:23 PM
@JasonBourne Only people 40+ would (almost) never use "like" that way.

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Time for my 0th one.

Do I need to refer to you my own answer about the use of "like"?

user19161
@Kosmonaut It is my impression that it is very common among young American women. But that is just my intuition.

user19161
@Kosmonaut I think I saw it before.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Maybe not too far off... but not yet!

3:25 PM
How old is your little one? About a year?

@JasonBourne I would say back in the 70s and maybe early 80s it was something that was more girls only.

@Kosmonaut Well, fair warning: two is more than twice the work. You have to want it, or else you'll be miserable.

Two is less than twice the work!

user19161
It is more and less, so the same.

user19161
Let me explain.

3:26 PM
Of course, it has a bit of a stigma attached to it in some people's minds, so they tend to avoid it in writing more — but people say it ALL the time.

As Gramma D says, "One already takes all your time, so two can't take any more."

user19161
More because they fight. Less because it is the same set of things you do.

user19161
I sound like a pro don't I? =)

Of course, if you have three, then you're outnumbered.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have no doubts about whether I want to have a second kid, it's just that we are waiting till I have a non-grad-student job (soon)

user19161
3:27 PM
@Kosmonaut So you have more or less retired from this site?

@JasonBourne Pretty much.

Kids just get more and more fun.

@KitFox When you have one, you can get that kid out the door in 45 minutes. By the time you have the second one, you've optimized and that kid is out the door in 10 minutes. But the new kid takes 45 minutes. And by that time the first has taken her shoes off and is running around the house again.

@JasonBourne what rock have you been living under?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Ah, see. You're doing it wrong then.
;-D

3:29 PM
@KitFox As usual :)

user19161
@RegDwighт Well, he could be hiding behind the curtain and downvoting all our answers...

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 You have to start with the slow one, you see.

My passion for the site was sort of scooped out of my soul. But I like visiting here every so often. And also I look to see how my reputation is doing, for some very primal reason that I can't explain.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 lesson learned: start optimizing with your last child.

To be honest, in my case sometimes two is LESS work than one, because my daughter practically babysits her brother.

3:30 PM
See? They entertain each other. Like cats.
One is always up in your grill asking questions and needing things.

@KitFox Yes, yes, don't read too much into my hypothetical example.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I guess it can really depend on the personalities of the two kids.

user19161
@Kosmonaut Well, it's over 30k now. I intend to retire after 30k as well.

If there are two, the younger will ignore you.

@Kosmonaut yes, and their age difference.

3:30 PM
@JasonBourne Yeah, I think I have enough reputation to retire in Florida now.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I was teasing.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah, we are trying to avoid having too great of an age difference.

Good plan.
My eldest doesn't remember being an only child.
And that's how we wanted it.

user19161
@KitFox I remember what they both look like since I saw them 9000 times.

@KitFox I know. And I was overgeneralizing. But there are enough cases of "two is more than twice the work" that I think it's a fair warning. Confirmation bias makes it seem like it's always like that even if it's not.

3:32 PM
Tru dat. I just tend to think about how well they play together, so I actually can cook dinner now, which was impossible for a long time.

@Kosmonaut If you ask me, the closer the better, but ymmv.

user19161
The wonders of wget. It allows a partial download to resume...

user19161
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 My own rule would be plus minus five for two kids.

Plus, it is really cute when they tell each other stories and the elder explains things like physics to the younger.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, so if I had already moved on to a job by now, we'd be going for it right now. Instead we'll wait another six months max probably.

3:33 PM
@KitFox yeah. that's true. Some days my kids go off together and I don't see them ALL DAY. I hear them though.

Hello folks. Nice to see you around, @Kosmo.

@JasonBourne 5 is a long time. Personally I might not bother if it was going to end up with a 5 year difference. Who knows.

He was just saying to the little one yesterday "Mommy thinks that black holes are quantum singularities, but that theory is disputed."

900 reviews! Home straight for me.

@Kosmonaut haha, I read that as "... we'd be doing it right now" and I was like "Whoa! TMI!"

3:35 PM
@RegDwighт Stretch, I think.

Not in BE.

@KitFox haha, really?

@RegDwighт OK.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It was pretty close to that.

I do wonder how long it will take them to lower the requirements for Steward. Probably the day I get my fifth they will lower it from 1000 to 10.

@KitFox awesome :)

@RegDwighт I was willing to take you at your word.

But I wasn't.
Live with it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The littlest one knows all the planets and dwarf planets and some of the major moons.

I think I am just going to give up on Duolingo. I feel like I should be getting paid for the work I am doing adding answers to these questions.

Also why should I pass on the opportunity to point out that Brits are weirdos.

3:37 PM
We're not weirdos. Americans are weirdos
Also Beavers

And just where do you think Americans come from? Wink wink, nudge nudge?

He also says "Kuiper belt objects!" very enthusiastically. It's adorable.

user19161
@MattЭллен You are going to get flagged now.

@KitFox wow, my littlest doesn't even know the seven dwarfs. Or 13 dwarves. But he knows all the Thomas tank engines.

@RegDwighт Well, when one American loves another American very much...

3:37 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's pretty critical.

@Kosmonaut they invade Iraq?

Little ones memorize like crazy. It's a good time to teach things that need memorization.

@RegDwighт I've never heard that euphemism...

Like the table of elements.

@KitFox I kinda wish people (mostly other people, not us) hadn't introduced him to Thomas the Tank Engine. Those damned toys are like $15-$25 for a single engine made of wood and plastic.

3:39 PM
Wow. We have a ton of inherited ones.
I had no idea they were so expensive.

@KitFox you mean 2204.62 pounds?

user19161
@KitFox I remember the first few by joining their abbreviations to form a word.

@RegDwighт No, I mean 2,500 pounds.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 We can thank the public relations industry.

user19161
libebcnofne namgalsipsclar

3:40 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 me and my brother loved Thomas the Tank Engine when we were little, but we didn't have the toys. just buy all the books!

@KitFox The track is easy to come by, because it's part of a standard of interlocking parts and you can buy any brand if you want. But the engines/cars are all different, and some of them even connect differently. So I had wanted to keep to the cheap trains but people keep buying him Thomas trains. Well, it's their money they're spending, but geez.

@KitFox that must be in Fahrenheit.

The little one got this cool book for Christmas:

@MattЭллен Yeah, we have books too. He loves the books. And the divvy-dees that he watches on the tivvy. (as he puts it).

It has gorgeous pictures.

user19161
3:41 PM
@KitFox What? 13? Time to relearn for me!

@JasonBourne 8 planets plus 5 dwarf planets.

user19161
@KitFox As gorgeous as you. =)

And now I finally know how to pronounce Haumea.

@KitFox 13 is a cool number. 8-)

user19161
3:42 PM
13 is a prime, and also the first number that ends with -een, fascinating.

I also like that the planets are proportioned better in the picture.

@JasonBourne It is also my age. :-D

user19161
@DumbCow This is a sign...

I should buy the kids some science books.

Often the four gas giants are pictured as approximately the same size, which is not anywhere near true.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I put some really good apps on the iPad, and that has sparked their interest.
Star charts, and Exoplanet and the Soho feed.
There's Solar Walk, which I highly recommend for everyone.
And there are a couple of interesting atomic/element/molecule apps.
We checked out a bunch of library books over the course of several weeks, but they were really outdated and it was difficult to explain how the information was not accurate.
The eldest was really interested in the formation of the moon. We watched this clip on YouTube probably a dozen times.

user19161
3:47 PM
I wasted too much money on books I don't really read. It's good to borrow from the library.

@KitFox don't forget to teach them about astrology!

user19161
@MattЭллен Or numerology.

or phrenology

user19161
I should aim for 27k by Jan, 28k by Feb, 29k by Mar and 30k by Apr. Then I can go for my reservist training in May.

I need to find a way to explain physics to the eldest. He's really interested in how certain discoveries are made.

3:50 PM
@JasonBourne Oh, are you going to do that sort of training?

@JasonBourne is it compulsory?

user19161
@Mahnax Well, I won't be doing much though.

user19161
@MattЭллен Yes. I will be overseas for three weeks. I haven't called to ask where yet...

somewhere nice?
or you really don't have any clue?

user19161
Usually it's Taiwan.

3:51 PM
I have friends in Taiwan

looks surprised

user19161
I should go for the Taiwanese girls there then, LOL.

You have friends?
Damn. Tweened.

user19161
Does Matt like Taiwanese girls?

I don't know.

3:52 PM
I don't know that many

user19161
I heard they are very sexy.

The ones I know are all crazy.
Short tempers.

@KitFox Yes, do you understand how platonic relationships work?

Fiesty, some might say.
@MattЭллен No. That was my next question. What's it like?

@KitFox Well, they all live far away from me, so it's fine :D
it's like having family, really

3:54 PM
Oh. I like my family.
Most of them.

I should tell the tester the software's ready to test...

Do you have a cute tester?

user19161
@MattЭллен My hands live near me, LOL.

@KitFox I was about to refute your statement but then I realized that I don't know any Taiwanese girls. Only HK, PRC, or CBC girls.
oh, and one ABC.

How do you test "cute"?

3:55 PM
@KitFox no.

@Shog9 post a picture in this chat room, and people will comment.

@Shog9 Direct comparison to a kitten playing with a breadstick.

@Shog9 Well, you start with some orange slices.
Oh.
I guess I've been doing it wrong.

> As you are aware, you are currently a non member of the Private Medical Insurance provided by [the people I work for].
a non-member?

Now I'm hungry for breadsticks.

3:56 PM
Oh. It's lunchtime. bbl.

that's like a type of member?
I'd rather just not be a member

@MattЭллен I think they are insulting your manhood.

WHAT?
I will have to hunt them down

@Shog9 Good. Little Caesars is always open.

user19161
And then from Jun to Dec, I will work on my math account. There, I have the entire year planned for SE.

user19161
4:00 PM
Brasero is very bad at burning my ISO images. I should use another burner.

user19161
Ladies and gentlemen, ELL now has 200 committers.

user19161
200
English Language Learners

Proposed Q&A site for people learning English, whose questions are too basic for the English Language and Usage site.

Currently in commitment.

user19161
Prepare for Betal!

@JasonBourne Yay!

Is there going to be a migration path from ELU to ELL?

4:13 PM
straight down

Haha.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Probably not.

@KitFox hm. wouldn't that be a useful thing?
Also migrating the other way

it won't be setup until later in the beta

No. The community is not reliable.

4:16 PM
maybe not even until launch

We'd end up with ELUers sending all the shit questions to ELL, which is something we want to avoid.

we might or it might work

user19161
Guys there is no disc burner on centos other than brasero, and brasero doesn't burn my fedora ISO.

user19161
I am screwed, LOL.

does dd burn discs?
or you could use a usb stick and create a bootable usb stick

4:19 PM
Wow! My post was used as a "related articles" post!

user19161
@KitFox Amazing! All because they knew you are Sportsman.

@KitFox related as in related or as in "here's another question that also has the word what in the title"?

@RegDwighт Erotica.
But it has never happened to me before.

17
Q: What is a good way to refer to stories that are meant for adults?

Victor PThere are stories for children and for adults. But when I say "adult stories" people tend to think they are erotica/porn stories. What is a good way to refer to adult stories? Example of adult stories: Lovecraft's, Poe's, Kafka's, etc.

4:22 PM
So I was excited.

Q: what is the difference between "to be verb+ing" and "to verb"

Kemal KaraWhat is the difference between this two sentences. You're too old to be playing with toys. You're too old to play with toys.

Get it @Reg!

Get what? Shorty?

My hands are full of sandwich.
Dupe! Dupe!

My hands are full of LEGO helicopter.
I am typing with my ear.

I found the dupe
I have voted to close

Go Matt!

4:26 PM
now let the community decide!

user19161
@RegDwighт See, this kind of shit gets a star.

user19161
Now you know why I don't get stars.

@MattЭллен Uh, no.

@JasonBourne sorry, only your starred stuff is shit. My starred shit is stuff.

oh
mods are part of the community too!
I still win

4:27 PM
I can click, I just couldn't search.
effectively

user19161
@MattЭллен I will download k3b instead, LOL.

Now I am thirsty. But damn that sandwich was delicious.

@KitFox I shall (e-)mail you a glass of water.

user19161
@Mahnax You can email me one too.

@JasonBourne I'm sorry, it was my last. I'll have to fetch more next time I'm out.

4:31 PM
in Taiwan everyone uses water purifiers. So don't drink the tap water

user19161
@MattЭллен Here, tap water is drinkable.

@JasonBourne good, good.

You can test things to your heart's content there.

@Mahnax Sorry, I wanted it fast. :-P

@Mahnax Thank you.

4:32 PM
@KitFox Any time.

user19161
Hey @JSBձոգչ long time no see!

user19161
4:50 PM
I got three downvotes in my last nine answers. Tough these days. Perhaps I have also made an enemy like Robusto.

time to ride!

Damn it. I can't figure out how to install the snapins I need on production.

5:07 PM
@JasonBourne I am not your enemy. And in any case, I seldom downvote.

Did anybody downvote my answer?
They should avoid doing that. I will call 911.
if they do that.

Can somebody come and fix this snow thing?
Thanks.
It's so gooey and slippery.

Cerberus, hi! I thought you were permanently asleep.

@DavidWallace No, he was hibernating.

@DavidWallace Oh? Why? I wish...

5:19 PM
Has our three-headed dog become a three-headed bear?

I roar only when confronted with incorrect grammar.

@Cerberus I like that. But I dont like to slip over it.
@Cerberus stop doing that or your will be permentally suspneded.

@Noah If you come it, come and take your stuff with you.
@Noah Stop doing that or you will be roared at!

@DavidWallace Now we have a shade of red.

This room is starting to look like one of those cards in a paint store

5:35 PM
@Shog9 I.e. like Windows 8.
Or Windows Phone.
In other words, square Disney.

Why are you running Windows 8?

Because I am running XP.
Why are you running, Shog 9?
Or, rather, why 9?

user19161
6:13 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I am on Fedora 18 as I type. The installation was OK, but I had to do it twice to get it right. The partitioning step was a little confusing. Be warned.

@JasonBourne Thanks for the warning. I will probably do it in March.

1 hour later…
7:25 PM
@Shog9 You came here to tell us that? And what's your problem with Pantone swatches anyway?

Pantone swatches.

@Robusto Good point. Someone needs Emerald.

We should just pick the most pretentiously named swatches, so whenever someone simply says "why is your picture just tan" we can say "no, you plebe, it's ecru"
