A: Why not combine "English Language Learners" with EL&U?

SF.My personal opinion? There will be no fragmentation in the end. Simply, ELU will die out. Their standards for questions are so ridiculously narrow, with anything "too basic" being unwelcome, anything "too complex" being "non-constructive", a major part of the remainder "off-topic", and everythin...

I don't quite agree with this, but it is funny and there is some truth in it.

@Cerberus I don't think it's unlikely enough to really be funny.

Well, there. I've done it. I've opened a new can of worms.

A: Done! Now restore this site to ESL ("English as a Second Language")

MετάEdIf we are considering how the names of the two sites are confusing, we should be giving equal consideration to the name of EL&U and how it contributes to the confusion. I doubt I can contribute a good name idea. To illustrate the approach I have in mind, though: after reviewing the list of SE...

@Cerberus well, I thought the connection was relevant (his closing meant he was 'against' ELL, and so a suggestion about a change to support quality sounded disingenuous).

Hullo.

So I've been going crazy with lego lately
I bought a bookcase
I'm filling it with lego
I entered all my sets into rebrickable
even my old sets that I'd never counted before
I'm now writing a javascript script to analyze the rebrickable data to help me estimate how many boxes I need to buy
turns out I have over 3600 unique parts/colours
that'd be a lot of boxes though

Fantasy-name-dropping is not flirting.

A: What do you call a person who started something that is later followed by everyone?

RegDwighтA trend-setter or trendsetter: someone who starts a trend, or makes one more popular

@JasonBourne that seems highly unlikely

ELU would be merged into ELL, and then all our accounts would be moved there.

@JasonBourne happens as well.

How is a beta site turned into a non-beta one?
Like the official launch.

You have to meet a number of criteria.

patients, community activity, the SE team noticing that the beta site is sufficiently active

10:38 AM
And of course the powers that be must have a highly subjective hunch as well.

I see. Was this site a beta sometime back?

there must be a blog post about it somewhere...

English Language & Usageenglish.stackexchange.com

Launched Q&A site for linguists, etymologists, and (serious) English language enthusiasts

There.
There's all the stats.

user19161
However, I think that ELU and Math will continue to live for a long time, so my accounts are safe.

Thanks.
@JasonBourne Heh, yes they will.

10:39 AM
We were deemed excellent on three accounts and okay on two. We have since greatly improved on both.
But the criteria change every now and then.

user19161
There is always Linguistics for the harder English questions, so I think ELU is a comfortable middle ground that will thrive best among the three.

The more different sites get created, the more data Stack Exchange has what makes a successful site. So the criteria get fine-tuned accordingly.

user19161
I think that there should not be sites with too much overlap.

For example, we only had to create five example questions for ELU to reach beta. For ELL, we had to create forty.

SE is actually getting a heck lot of a sites.

10:41 AM
Yes, so they kind of have the luxury of saying, you're wheat, you're chaff.

we're corn, for the people with wheat gluten intolerance

SE would work even if we had these sites: Computers, Mathematics, Languages, Academic Sciences, Cognitive Sciences.

But I think it's pretty good to have multiple.
