Hey can anyone help me with a grub/boot problem? When I choose Windows 7 it says invalid efi path
i don't have an efi board, but there are loads of questions about efi booting on site
Tom

like i said, i don't have that hardware...but there are lots of questions: askubuntu.com/search?q=efi

thanks, the closest I found was askubuntu.com/questions/160870/… but the recommended answer does not work
you have the windows loader installed on sda anyway...not grub
Tom
Tom
02:13
yes I do
but I did not choose this
I just installed ubuntu
and it did not even ask me anything
very annoying
they try to make it easy to install ubuntu
and as a result it changed my entire system with the click of a button
and broke it of course
it did not ask my anything regarding partitions either, it just did its thing
so now I have no idea at all what it did
Tom
Tom
and how to resolve this problem
@AbrahamVanHelpsing right, but I can boot Ubuntu just fine
so it seems like ubuntu is installed correctly with UEFI
oh...i stopped dual booting outside of VMs a while ago...and as i said already..i don't have an EFI board...nothing.i.can.do.

Is there somekind of "definite" guide on where to install or extract portable applications? E.g. in usr/lib or usr/local or /opt
In this case I am wanting to install Sublime Text 2 manually
but where to extract the directory?
I'm Bathman... in a chain smokers voice
@Tom sublime has a ppa i thought and just installs, but portable apps are usually in ~/ somewhere if they're just for you or opt if they're for everyone so they don't clobber/interfere any 'official' stuff. used to think about usr/local, but the debian packaging guide tells you not to put anything there, and canonical wants all your stuff in opt(msf installs there by default too). just thoughts.
Tom
Tom
After reading tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/usr.html /usr/local/lib seems like a proper choice
@Tom it does seem proper, but: "Note: very often the upstream package will install files under /usr/local. DO NOT INSTALL ANY FILES IN THERE." -- wiki.debian.org/HowToPackageForDebian
Tom
Tom
04:35
Hmm, great.
Another related question, is it possible to make a keyboard shortcut run a binary in /opt ? I think the command has to be prepended with sudo, but the user using the shortcut may not be an administrator
that's just permissions. you don't have to sudo to run things in opt
Tom
Tom
Oh
And about /opt, should I also create a /opt/bin for binaries?
no, those go in /usr/bin or ~/bin if you add it to your search path -- almost always /usr/bin
Tom
Tom
Ok, so that is allowed.
Quite confusing :) thanks
it is confusing...unity goes all kinds of buggy if you put desktop files and icons anywhere except default locations...which causes problems for people packaging apps they might want to put in software center...so yes, generally the things that are allowed in default: '/usr/bin', icons, desktop files. everything else goes in opt.
Tom
Tom
04:45
@AbrahamVanHelpsing thanks. So now I have a binary in /usr/bin, it's brightness_dec.sh and brightness_inc.sh but they require sudo to be executed.
Any way to make them runnable without sudo? Reason is I need them to function as keyboard shortcuts.
you can make things setuid, but it's considered bad form
Tom
Tom
(my ultrabook Asus Zenbook prime's brightness function keys do not function)
So there is no way to make them function as keyboard shortcuts?
the "best" way is to have a dbus service that runs elevated, then send it "brighter" or "dimmer" signals over dbus
Tom
Tom
Ugh that sounds complicated.
not as complicated as you might think, but more complicated than you might want
Tom
Tom
04:52
gksudo brightness_down.sh seems to work, but I have to enter the root password for each tick..
sudoers would let you set a NOPASSWD for just that command, but again...frowned upon

I think the answer to this question is to switch to Unity 2D. But I'm thinking there must be a canonical question about fixing poorly performing GUI's, that it can be duped to. Now that it's been translated, it should not be closed as not a real question. Any suggestions for a master question?

Also (unrelated) ...... happy birthday @jokerdino!
@EliahKagan thank you!
@EliahKagan I am not sure what he is talking about actually.
He wants to install Ubuntu alongside Windows?
@jokerdino He has a broken Windows system and a working Wubi system. He wants to just have Ubuntu, as a standalone OS. He is willing to reinstall Ubuntu.
In that case, I am not sure if it is a dupe.
Unless the canon is generic enough.
So, he wants to remove Wubi and reinstall Ubuntu on a new partition :|
@jokerdino And also get rid of the broken Windows installation altogether. That is my understanding.
He wants to purge Windows? I thought he wanted to keep Windows. If he wants to do away with Ubuntu, we probably have a canon.
16
Q: How to I remove windows but keep Ubuntu?

akshatjI want to keep ubuntu but remove windows.

08:02
@jokerdino Well, it's a Wubi system, so the Ubuntu system exists on a disk image inside the broken Windows system's NTFS partition. Removing Windows would not keep Ubuntu.
Well, I am not sure then.

if it needs a reference:

To see all the options available with import command, go to ImageMagick’s website.

hey guys, can you give us a hand
sure.
/me gives badp a hand.
we've got a guy who'd installed Mint
he upgraded it
but i dont think i can work with people with 'Im Done'
13:49
he was asked where to install grub, for some reason
gave him a hand
Mint is offtopic. but we can probably help.
on the site it is, yeah
he picked /dev/sda1
should pick /dev/sda
I know.
13:50
picking sda1 won't hurt
i picked sda1 so many times and my laptop is fine
well, apparently it did. help at the grub console gives "No such partition"
i think he probably nuked the grub partition
boot live, chroot, and re-install grub to /dev/sda...i'm sure there's a question on site
the guy also had his own live usb distro and it fails to boot as well
ask him to install grub on /dev/sda
13:50
@jokerdino It hurts when there is a Windows partition boot loader
@Takkat why would i worry about MBR? :D
PBR
I had that some time ago. That was a huge mess.
@Takkat there was, yeah
<--- 2 hardisk, Grub > error ... switch sata cable :D
oh, i am probably lucky because i don't really care about MBR
13:52
@badp we should then repair Windows first - then reinstall Grub.
@jokerdino you don't have windows?
i have grub handling windows booting
+1 for Takkat
@Takkat it's not like we can get to boot Windows anyway
i think he needs a live cd
13:53
using a windows repair disk should work
@Takkat that
@badp --^
Well I couldn't boot Windows even after repairing everything because some weird issue in the MBR - only repair was with a HEX editor then.
it's okay, our guy's rad enough to wipe Windows entirely in the progress
1. Boot from windows disk, select "Startup repair". boot several times
2. after restoring windows, boot from ubuntu live cd and reinstall grub
@badp wiping windows for a safe system always is a good option.
<-- still needs it for printing photos :"(
