Ok I totally reinstalled Ubuntu after making a backup of all files. All is giong well but i cant acess my FTP or SSH so that i can restore all my files. It was automatic on my last installation. Im on Ubuntu 12.04. I also reconfigured my router and i can acess teh internet from my server.

@Tom sublime has a ppa i thought and just installs, but portable apps are usually in ~/ somewhere if they're just for you or opt if they're for everyone so they don't clobber/interfere any 'official' stuff. used to think about usr/local, but the debian packaging guide tells you not to put anything there, and canonical wants all your stuff in opt(msf installs there by default too). just thoughts.

Another related question, is it possible to make a keyboard shortcut run a binary in /opt ? I think the command has to be prepended with sudo, but the user using the shortcut may not be an administrator
it is confusing...unity goes all kinds of buggy if you put desktop files and icons anywhere except default locations...which causes problems for people packaging apps they might want to put in software center...so yes, generally the things that are allowed in default: '/usr/bin', icons, desktop files. everything else goes in opt.
I think the answer to this question is to switch to Unity 2D. But I'm thinking there must be a canonical question about fixing poorly performing GUI's, that it can be duped to. Now that it's been translated, it should not be closed as not a real question. Any suggestions for a master question?

@jokerdino Well, it's a Wubi system, so the Ubuntu system exists on a disk image inside the broken Windows system's NTFS partition. Removing Windows would not keep Ubuntu.
