The problem I had is that pulse depends on /proc/user/1000, and that only exists when you're logged in

So it would only work when I had an active SSH connection

And I'm not sure how necessary e is: although it can't be fully implemented in terms of the others, it's easy to implement a function that does equality checking for integers, and it should be possible to do one for lists, too.
