@JosephWright What do you mean? If literally, I'm looking at unicode-math package code to scan sscript characters and think that the variables are poorly named etc. (okay now that I know it's TeX limitation and stuff)
Is there a "proper" bug tracker for XeLaTeX? So if someone go search for bugs they can find those
(I mean such as the non-BMP character in error messages bug I mentioned some time ago)
Generally I know I should post on the main site for searchability, but usually I don't know enough to search properly to know whether there's a duplicate
Now that chat is so convenient (too convenient?). Maybe I should move some to the main site
Is it a known bug that XeLaTeX cannot generate synctex correctly if a paragraph only have one word?

Also ■ how do I get ∫α stuff to work in formula without utf8x ? (almost every solution I come across suggest defining each character manually)
The rest are • unixode (not in TeX live) • use unicode-math table in reverse (still need some manual definition) • inputenx (how do I even use this one?) [math] errors out
ucs package already have the table, right?...

@user202729 I just wondered why you are digging through unicode-math - most of the time it works OK
@user202729 Never seen that, and quickly checking it looks OK here
Partially because it adds 0.8s to the compilation time, and partially because some of the output looks different (∅, ℝ) -- tex.stackexchange.com/questions/125175/…
(although I know that it isn't the package's fault, it's the Latin modern math font)
... it works well for me now. I wonder why
@user202729 As @DavidCarlisle has said, unicode-math does loads of setup, so the time is not surprising, and also as he's said, given that TeX used to take >15 minutes per page, 0.8s load time is trivial to the point of being \simeq 0s
Could be a zathura thing, but it works well with LuaLaTeX
So not very likely
@JosephWright It's just "used to"
Nowadays computers are ~~more expensive~~ faster people would naturally expect more
@user202729 Yes?
@user202729 Sure, but for a batch process, taking a second or so is still tiny: I've got some pgfplots that take 10 minutes to run per page (lots) of data
I (used to) prefer realtime preview
05:59
@user202729 I guess I'm trying to get at that for most documents, this is still meaning you are under a few seconds to run the typesetting: unless one is building a large-scale website delivering 1000s of PDFs, that's almost certainly much faster than you can write
@user202729 It's quite possible: Will wrote it a while ago, and a reworking might use different names. Certainly when I redid siunitx I tidied up a lot of stuff
06:12
Regarding this
Sep 12 at 8:21, by David Carlisle
@user202729 it's just a shorthand for 13 and saved a few bytes back in 1982
What does it save byte of? Certainly not the source code
Okay never mind
> The control sequence \active is defined to yield the constant 13; this is
the one category code that seems to deserve a symbolic name, in view of its frequent
use in constructing special-purpose macros.
@user202729 Guess I'll post it on the main site instead for searchability (and I should also migrate some of my old issues asked in chat there)

2 hours later…
07:54
@user202729 \active is one token, 13 is three
@user202729 about comments when you were looking at eg tmpa_tl are you looking at unicode-mah-luatex.sty or um-code-sscript.dtx ? All the comments are removed from the former.
Is parsing token significantly slower than characters? The eye have to handle 7 bytes anyway
@DavidCarlisle I'm okay with that one now. (but the dtx is used to generate the PDF right? I read the PDF)
@user202729 yes saved several minutes back then and even now for code like pgfplots or tikz with thousands of iterations it saves a visible amount of time, not so much the parsing as exectution \active is a number so terminates an assingment but if you do \foo=13\fumble, you have to expand \fumble decide if it starts with a digit if not put it all back, see

A: What does \z@ do?

David Carlislelatex.ltx says \newdimen\z@ \z@=0pt % can be used both for 0pt and 0 so as it says it is short (and efficient) way of getting 0. You should always have a copy of the latex source file latex.ltx in a text editor window while reading package code:-), or perhaps, if you prefer, the typeset versi...

@user202729 yes the pdf is the typeset version of the dtx
@samcarter ooh it looks great, thank you! Would it be possible perhaps to move the halo a little higher?
@samcarter anathema sit
@DavidCarlisle You weren't in the list :(
@PauloCereda you shouldn't let such technical details stop you
@DavidCarlisle ooh I still can try, hold on
08:12
I think I got it. Each token is only parsed approximately once but they're used (expanded/"digested"?) several times
@PauloCereda but its size would be context dependent, which might be scary
@DavidCarlisle oh no, a Python-like universe
@PauloCereda vote for me
@DavidCarlisle wait what?!
Where's Mensch?!
08:23
@PauloCereda that wasn't a real/valid nomination see the link sam c just put in the other room
@DavidCarlisle oh
@PauloCereda unlike my totally real and valid nomination, with much better questionaire answers than Alan Munn's
2
@DavidCarlisle ooh
@DavidCarlisle Oh, other secret rooms... :)
@mickep ooh secrets
@PauloCereda Sure, that would actually be easier because I wouldn't have to worry about different hair styles :)
@samcarter ooh
@PauloCereda So, we now vote on hair styles.
08:43
@mickep ooh
@mickep No need to vote, red hair always wins :)

@PauloCereda ^^
@samcarter Well, difficult to disagree with that.
@mickep :D
@DavidCarlisle LOL
08:47
@samcarter boo
@DavidCarlisle Not everyone can be monochrome :)
@DavidCarlisle I'd call it 'versus FMi' but yes ....
@JosephWright vs. Nicky's datetime2 :)
@samcarter agreed :)
@PauloCereda <3
@samcarter <3
09:06
@user202729 you shouldn't need too many extra definitions if you input unicode-math-table tex.stackexchange.com/a/601583
09:25
Hi community, quick question: I know that \AtBeginShipoutNext{stuff} can do stuff at the beginning of the next page. Does a similar hook exist for the beginning of the right column in \twocolumn mode?

2 hours later…
11:06
Yes I've read that answer of yours too.
VOTE CAST! ^^^
@PhelypeOleinik YES
11:52
@PhelypeOleinik First change will be the ban of all tikz answers, only picture mode will be allowed :)
@samcarter oh, a coup!
@samcarter LOL
@samcarter Second change: all blame shall be automatically assigned to @UlrikeFischer
Oh, wait
That's how things are already
@PhelypeOleinik :D
12:20
@PhelypeOleinik It isn't! Some blames are still withheld from me and assigned to other. This has to change.
@UlrikeFischer That's unacceptable!
13:12
@samcarter would such an improvement be enough to tempt you back?
@DavidCarlisle Nobody would be able to resist such a unique site :)
13:31
@PhelypeOleinik Thanks for your support. :)
@AlanMunn Happy to be a such a helpful member of this community
@AlanMunn Also, I guess that fixes the candidate count issue :)
@samcarter ^^^
@AlanMunn he was persuaded by the elegance of my prose in my nomination statement chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/59448904#59448904
@PhelypeOleinik easy solution! :)
@DavidCarlisle You forgot to mention that you would redesign the whole site in colortbl style
@samcarter yes hex colours are banned primary colours are what you need
@samcarter although for poke-you-in-the-eye brash colour panels on a site hard to beat:
13:49
@DavidCarlisle Does this meet your monochrome taste?
@samcarter better matches my hair than yours, yes
@DavidCarlisle :D
@DavidCarlisle How did @PhelypeOleinik vote for you? I can't see you as a candidate! imgur.com/JMQ5TAH
@Imran I edited the page source to add David as a candidate :)
@Imran same way I posted a nomination here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/59448904#59448904 we are just messing around and faking things in the DOM inspector in the browser
13:58
@Imran I mean: @DavidCarlisle is clearly the right choice, so the election is pointless
3
@PhelypeOleinik and @DavidCarlisle Oh! got it.
14:45
@JosephWright Did percusse withdraw his nomination or did the powers that be do it for him?
@AlanMunn Powers
@JosephWright No sense of humour? Or were they worried about an actual Boaty McBoatface outcome?
@AlanMunn I think 'no joke candidates' (though I don't think it was a joke per se, more a comment on the entire idea of moderators and elections-thereof)
@JosephWright True. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. It would be nice to see him back on the site, in fact.
15:00
@AlanMunn M'LORD!

@PauloCereda I just sent you an e-mail about a project you might be interested in. Not about ducks, but it involves several of your other interests. :)
@musarithmia Got it, thanks! :) And nice seeing you again, I do remember us talking in the past. :)
@PauloCereda likewise! My ability to be involved here has waxed and waned but I am glad to see you and so many others have kept the spirit so positive and constructive here!
@musarithmia not to mention the silliness. :)
16:21
@PauloCereda Silliness? Where? We are all deadly serious here.
@AlanMunn ooh

@yo' -- Nice! (The little guy in front looks like he's wearing sunglasses.) (And, apropos of nothing in particular, earlier today I had a delightful talk with the new dentist in the practice -- the third generation of that family and a newly minted D.D.S. -- about snakes' dislocatable jaws. The things one manages to find of mutual interest!)
