6:00 AM
hey how many vyxal answers you've posted

@DLosc since the repl.it link doesn't allow pasting,i think asking new users to fork this may be better: replit.com/join/rhpfxbux-razetime

oh no 108 vyxal answers

@Wasif many indian languages lol

you'll soon cross lyxal

Quite a lot, I'm sure. I saw the query and A username was at 2nd place.

6:01 AM
I need to do vyxal lot too

@DLosc so basically type program in program.pip and run run.sh
we can probably port your existing python to do the same thing better

@Wasif 108?

@Ausername yeah, from user:100664 "Vyxal"

How did I do that many?

who knows

6:05 AM
My guess is that you grew with Vyxal, then started playing with it.
It's a cool language, I have to say.

I have only 40 vyxal answers :-(

Lyxal has 117, +5 tips.

Woah
I'm in danger!

Poor creator.

So there is nearly ~400 vyxal answers in this Site IMO

6:07 AM
i only have 9 :P

No ~350

@hyper-neutrino Best avg score tho

do you have a link to the sede query?

it's pinned in the vyxal room

6:14 AM
Inaccurate tho, and how have I done 50+ answers in one week?

not too surprising that i have the highest avg since i have fewer answers so if they get a good amount of upvotes i don't have many "forgotten" ones, and i think i hit the hnq/fgitw wave at least once
i'm not impressed with the vyxal answers i chose to post but i don't know the language well enough [yet] so hopefully i can put out some more non-trivial things later

Hello!

6:31 AM
hey does there exist a challenge to flip the bits in a number?

dang
how about one to count the number of distinct elements in a list?

are they AI-generated, perchance?

hmmm perhaps...

(I mean, "perchance", as in the literal adverb, not as in the fake quote generator)

6:36 AM
(disclaimer: yes)

It really likes Befunge-93

@pxeger I fed it the names of my challenges
one of which has the name befunge in the title

GPT-3 has good taste in esolangs confirmed

If I write a fastest code sorting challenge, can I ask people to give timings relative to how fast qsort in C is?
That is it's just relativev speed on their computer

6:38 AM
in a fastest code challenge you need to have a baseline hardware people can use

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

pxegerEncode USB packets code-golf binary coding-theory encoding Inspired by this video by Ben Eater. The USB 2.0 protocol uses, at a low level, a line code called non-return-to-zero encoding, specifically a variant called NRZI. Encoding works as follows: Start with some initial state, which is either...

#BeFasterIntercom

Or should even relative speed always be done on the same computer

relative speed must be on the same computer

@Razetime Ok so even with relative speed I need to time it separately?

6:39 AM
yeah
run qsort on your machine

because even relative performance will differ on different computers because of different support for specialised instructions, for example

and then run the other programs compare

That is true
How much faster do you think people will manage?
In order to make sure the code actually does something I was thinking of saying it should print out the first element after sorting. Should that be enough to stop an optimiser removing the code?

I want to give you guys something.
But it seems like I'll rely on you to fix what happened.

@StackExchange scanf will write a null-terminated string to the pointer, but the pointer isn't initialised to anything (it's only declared) so nothing gets written. Then, printf finds the pointer is null (uninitialised) so it prints (null)

6:45 AM
@pxeger It really does

scanf with strings is generally a bad idea

Mmm there's nothing scarier than dropping your phone on concrete. Luckily nothing seems broken

> Turing-complete Code Golf in Befunge-93
How?
@lyxal Does you has a phone case?
> Reverse a String and Print it Backwards

@Ausername I does

Isn't that a cat?
@lyxal Whew.

6:46 AM
"I am not a cat!"

Should be Ok then.
@pxeger WW is tho

@pxeger was that message for me?

> Print a List of All the Files in a Directory

no?

Bash, 2 bytes: ls.

6:47 AM
I guess not

> Input a Number Between 1 and 5

Pure zsh, 6 bytes: echo *

And...

@Ausername All 4 of my cameras seem to be fine too

6:48 AM
Good!

@Ausername 0 bytes.

@Ausername I only just noticed that. Well done ai

Q: implicit declaration of function 'gets' is invalid in C99

H. JayWhy am I getting this error? implicit declaration of function 'gets' is invalid in C99 [-Werror,-Wimplicit-function-declaration] Code: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> typedef struct myStruct { char name[20]; char tel[20]; }contact; int main(void) { contact *mycont[3]; ...

@StackExchange You would need to malloc some memory and write it to the pointer. But don't do that alone because you'll get buffer overflows!

Dang, looks like I can't post any of the generated titles

6:50 AM
> Stack Overflow

Um, no.

@StackExchange Try it online!

@lyxal Maybe ask it again.

but don't do this! Buffer overflow alert!

@Ausername wait how did it get SO from CG?

Nice.

6:51 AM
If you're gonna do that, though, you might as well just use an array: Try it online!

@lyxal Idk

You know a lot of C, huh?

not that much

I'm at the same page.

Dunning-Kruger.

6:53 AM
Lyxal?
this is great.

finally, a non-trivial jelly answer i can say i'm happy with. now, time for nick kennedy to outgolf me by 50%, because they are way too good at long jelly answers

@Ausername in order of left to right: Advent of Golf planning (an event hyper and I tried to do last year that ended up not happening), a list form of a file of numbers for a challenge of razetime's and what seems to be a file from the 2019 advent of code
@Ausername that was me proving a point in a "one word per message" discord channel. They said "a word is a word if it is found in the Dictionary"

@lyxal Lol

So I made a repo called "the dictionary", filled it with "words" and used them

> defrickulate - To make something not so terrible by smashing it to pieces with a hammer glued to a chainsaw

7:07 AM
That was my idea of humour
Don't judge it please

@Ausername Are hammers that big really exist?

And this was before I got access to AI BTW

I'm not judging it, it's hilarious.

One that won't separate the chainsaw with it.
A mod.
2 mods.

Oh, and they said I couldn't camel case/snake case my words too
Hence my dictionary

7:09 AM
I like blue.

@lyxal PascalCase or kebab-case.

@Ausername doesn't matter if I define the words! ;p

That's misunapiofrickulationalism!

An ideology? Oooh, I'm interested.

Idk

Sure.
@WheatWizard @hyper-neutrino Who's the other mod, aside from you two and Doorknob?

Oh yes, forgot about them.

feelsbad

Also, as someone who joined this year, what happened to Mego?

7:27 AM
I feel like I want caird as a mod when the next election comes.
Mego?

Following what SE did to Monica and their forced relicensing of content (which is a violation of the license itself, which I believe they have reverted since then), Mego resigned and deleted their account (I can't remember if they went through with removing all of their content as well).

Resigning post link pls?

never mind, their posts are still around, but their account is gone

But Mego didn't take very kindly to there being new moderators though

@Ausername here
there's other meta posts from mego and from the other mods but i'm... really not in the mood to go digging through for them
i've been conflicted on my decision to make myself a moderator for all 8+ months of being a moderator and I prefer not to think too much about SE and focus on the community

7:32 AM
@Ausername do you have discord?

@Ausername I'd rather candidates be honest though and I very much respect caird's decision to disclose their history. Even though I don't hold it against them because everyone makes honest mistakes and I know they learned from it and were just not experienced enough at the time (can't give away too many details), it's better to be open about it
I was considering mentioning my account deletion but I decided against it because it was taking too much of my nomination and it's... not exactly that important, really. If people want/need to know I'll just explain, but neither I nor SE did anything wrong relating to that anyway

The real reason I voted for hyper as first preference was because hyper nominated in both 2016 and 2020. I decided that was a display of determination to moderatorship, which I thought was quite good

I did?

Intercon's a snail. :(
Well, not much of one.

@hyper-neutrino then 2018
I can't remember the year
It was the one before the 2020 one iirc

7:39 AM
only candidates that year were DJ, mego, and PhiNotPi
i am very confident this is my first year running

I am very confident that it was potatoes, not ginger.
Don't mind me. I just mistook them when I saw the meal on the pan.

I swear I saw a nomination of yours elsewhere

... strange
sure you weren't thinking of someone else?
the 2016 nominees were phinotpi, elendia, martin, doorknob, digital trauma, dennis, alex a, and three withdrawn nominations that i'm not sure i can disclose
it's on this page

hatus

@WheatWizard ?

7:59 AM
I had a good (late) lunch. :)
What're'ya'upto?
Intercon still loading 360p slowly.

hello again everyone

@Wasif Ola.

ayos lang,
paano ka naman
(Auto translated by Google translate)
What I didn't notice that I have 323 score on [code-golf] tag!!!!
Just need to get 77 for silver badge
Only have one silver tag badge around SE network

@Wasif Ayos din. Gusto mong matuto ng Filipino (o Tagalog, kasi ang Filipino ay "standardized Tagalog")?
Although Filipino is my native language, I'm not very fluent at it.
My first language is English. lol

@StackExchange are you from Phillipines?

8:14 AM
@hyper-neutrino Withdrawn candidates are visible to anonymous users

@Wasif I indeed am.

@cairdcoinheringaahing ah, okay, nice. (probably could've just checked that myself in a private window, lol)
well caird is up now which is my reminder that i am up too late again and should go to sleep sometime soon

New moderator election is coming?

uh, no
there was never any mention of another election lol. idk why previous moderation and election suddenly came up a lot for no reason but no we do not have another election scheduled

Feedback?

It's interesting, but the math variables stopped me from reading. lol
I'd say you wait for the others' feedback, because as a beginner in CGCC, my feedback wouldn't be enough.

PEP 661 looks quite interesting

@WheatWizard I'd maybe recommend putting the example you gave A username in comments (the stacking logs case); that might make it a bit more approachable. not sure if it'd help though, and i'm too tired to think about much right now

8:40 AM

@Wasif thanks, removed

@hyper-neutrino welcome
Humans are the interpreter of My Eyes language

@user ah, well that's the beauty of it, it can be infinity (which is an extreme number) but it can also be infinum, which is the lower limit of a set of numbers e.g. inf{⅟ₙ:n∈ℕ}=0
infinum and supremum (the upper limit) are both a form of extremum, so they are extreme numbers

@pxeger That just seems like None with extra steps

@cairdcoinheringaahing well Python just needs explicit sum types like Haskell and Rust
The idea is that you want to distinguish between any value being passed, and some other state
Like consider the getattr function: getattr(object, "attribute", default_if_attribute_not_present)
You want to be able to distinguish between "the user passed None as the default value" and "the user did not pass a default value so an error should be raised
So this is suggesting sentinel("error_if_missing") can be passed for "no default"
But the proper solution is to have a distinct type: getattr(o, a, default(None)) vs getattr(o, a, no_default)

CMC: Make a program that does a(b(c(d(e(f(g(h(i(j(k(l(m(n(o(p(q(r(s(t(u(v(w(x(y(z()))))))))))))))))))))))))). Those functions can be anything, but I wanna see you try.

@StackExchange What do you mean by "does"?
@StackExchange APL: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

@Adám A program where a function takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function that takes in a function...

9:34 AM
@StackExchange Hold on, are you sure that's what you wrote? I interpreted it as a function that takes the result of a function that takes the result of a function … that takes the result of a function that doesn't take any arguments.

Each function has to do something that complies with the other functions that's being used in it.
That's what I'm trying to imply.

Then my problem is that the innermost level says z() and not just z

z is indeed a function that takes no arguments. Do anything with it, then use y() on it, then send that result to x() to make it do something, up until you reach a().

A function that doesn't take any argument isn't a function. That's just a program.
Can we at least let z take a dummy argument?

@Adám maybe in some languages, but that is blatantly not true for most C derivatives

9:40 AM
@pxeger I more meant in the mathematical meaning of "function".

But we're doing code golf, not maths

@Adám Do it in your will.

@StackExchange Wat? I wasn't planning on dying any time soon.

@Adám I'm sorry. Did I phrase that wrong?
lol

Probably.

9:42 AM
What I meant is do it if you want.
I'm trying to watch a YouTube video.

"Do it in your will." = "Include it in the document where you dictate what shall happen to your possessions after you die."

Probably meant "at your will"

@StackExchange In that case, APL: z y x w v u t s r q p o n m l k j i h g f e d c b a

@pxeger I really need English Language Learners Stack Exchange or English Language & Usage Stack Exchange.
Which is better though?
English is my first language, but Filipino is my native one.

first language normally means the same as native language
are you sure

10:02 AM
I learned English first before Filipino.
lol

To what extent are (non-standard) libraries permitted in code-golf questions?

They are fine.

Cool, thanks

Of course mention that you are using them.

Will do. And I guess I can't use tio.run then...

tio might have them. Depends on the library.

it doesn't, i just checked

You used to be able to ask Dennis to install them.

So I can't now?

It would seem so.
Dennis is not around so much.

Okay, nevermind then. Thanks!

Wow it's been a while since Iast checked how the Australian dollar compares to other countries. Y'all Europeans and British are ripping us off!
Like holy crap, one of our dollars is only worth around half in Britain
Smh

12:08 PM
sucks to be you I guess
Although I don't think it's fair to base economic performance solely on the value of the currency

Nah I'm saying y'all get more value out of us than we get out of you!
Outrageous! \s
(this is coming from someone with absolutely no need for exchanging foreign currency)

12:22 PM
It's for this.
@lyxal How about us Filipinos? A US dollar is worth ~50 Philippine pesos.

@StackExchange Please help me fix this.
Oh wait.
Nevermind, I made a typo.
I'm logging out at 10:00PM (PH time).
Please don't mess around with my stuff while I'm gone.

@NewPosts in addition to what WW said: when we get spam, just flag it as such and leave it. Maybe downvote but that's it. No need to VTD, VTC, comment or anything else - it's not worth the time

@cairdcoinheringaahing What's VTC and VTD?

@cairdcoinheringaahing does Patch have a Twitter account?
@StackExchange vote to close and vote to delete
@cairdcoinheringaahing I took your profile text and smacked it into the continuer. Hence my asking about patch's twitter
@StackExchange I did yours too

You probably need more words to get anything meaningful I would think.

I'm learning C++ in an alternate universe? Nice.

@WheatWizard erm

I don't know C++ too much, but I think I saw some term std.

@WheatWizard You uh mind telling me your involvement with protesting at the university of Hong Kong?

@WheatWizard understandable

AI redwolf also likes lua and c/c++.
@canonicalRedwolf what are your opinions on c/c++?

also all of the spam lately has been while i'm asleep

He does have an onlyfans tho, costs $4.99 a month, and you get cute pictures of him :P
@lyxal I am active on reddit, but I'd be shocked if someone messaged me asking me about CGCC :P

did you mean to reply here?

I don't know what you're talking about :P

Morning!
On mobile so not gonna read the transcripts, anything interesting I missed?

lyxal using an AI on our profiles

I'll have to read the transcripts then :p

Okay, not on mobile anymore

likely

I like it when new users reply to my welcome comments :p

4:44 PM
@lyxal Do mine!

5:10 PM
hello everyone
here's how CGCC loads in IE9
so horrible even broke the scroll bars

Speaking of which, about time we decide on whether to add HW feed?

TBH, rather annoyingly, the meta discussion is still fairly inconclusive. +18/-5, +9/-1, +3/-0 suggests that having it in another chatroom is the preferred option, but not by much

I think a new question and answers might be a good idea
Things have changed a bit and lots of those votes are probably from a while ago

5:39 PM
TBH I probably should've just reopened a new question rather than give an answer

Not to late to do that
I think putting it in another room is no longer a viable option
TNB is pretty much the only active general room left

The Orchard as well, but that's absolutely not happening :P

I think a standard feed in TNB is the best option
And there doesn't seem to be much opposition to having a HW feed

I'll draft up a "Conclusive opinion on having a Hello, World! feed" question, and we can close the current one as a dupe of that.

5:55 PM
Jan 20 '18 at 17:49, by DJMcMayhem
I like how I can see deleted messages cause I'm an RO lol
So DJ said that like 2 minutes after I first suggested having a Hello, World! thread, and I can't believe it took me literally years and to become an RO to find that out ಠ_ಠ

@Wasif The real question is, why are you using IE?

Q: Conclusive opinion on having a Hello, World! feed

caird coinheringaahingThis question asks about the possibility of adding a feed to The Nineteenth Byte that posts new answers to the Hello, World! thread - a typical place for people to first introduce their new programming languages. There are currently three answers to that discussion, none of which are conclusive, ...

@NewPosts I haven't included my "yes as a ticker feed" answer, because I'd rather not "seed" the voting pool by put it as the first answer. Anyone who wants it to be a ticker system is welcome to repost my answer if they want

kinda unfortunate that after over a week of featuring and asking several times in chat the normal feed proposal from redwolf got a total of like one vote during that whole period
anyway, i've hammed the old post into this one

I want to become a mod so I can hamster posts

I may have missed a few buttons there

6:22 PM
Personally, I want to ham them. A honey roast duplicate sounds great :P

Sure, go ham :D

1 hour later…
7:41 PM
@lyxal omg it finally happened
do you know, I'd like to take the entire transcript of the time since I got here, then feed that to an AI, and see at exactly what point I'm projected to cross 5000 rep (at 881 now, because reasons)
after it generates the new messages, of course

@hyper-neutrino If I'm being honest, I think this might be out of apathy. I suspect I'll never click on a Hello World answer because they are very rarely interesting, but I don't think answers will really be posted frequently enough that it will ever annoy me. And I think I'm probably not the only one who thinks this way; this bikeshedding is kind of annoying tbh. Just do it already, and if enough people complain we can always remove it again.

saying this after reading the funny generated AI transcript

the salami lid (the salami lid) aint gon fit (wont fit) so the salami lid wont fit the salami lid (lami lid) salami lid aint gon (int gon) fit like that. so the salami lid (the salami lid) and its uh

The salami lid also uses the same as the salami lid, and the salami lid is quite similar in design. The salami lid is a bit more like the lid, as you can see with the photo. This will add up with how your salami should behave when worn on certain types of things. Now take a quick tour with your salami to check some of that stu

@Wasif this is why we don't use IE, 1, 9 or otherwise
@user this is why I want to see the natural extension of the transcript

7:57 PM
Well, the generated text wouldn't look that weird if lyxal's profile weren't incoherent

Thinking about how I would scrape every message

@pxeger TBH I more or less agree. If people start discussing the answer, I'll take a look at it, but I don't often see new languages I'm too interested in; most of them are more or less just a new variant of the same concept. Which isn't that much of a problem - Vyxal is a pretty good language (IMO) despite being yet another stack language so it's not particularly new or exciting - but they just don't excite me too much.

since someone's already wrote the AI, if I get the input, I can pass that input to the AI, and we're sailing smoothly from there

I'm mostly apathetic, too. So I guess I can understand people not caring enough to upvote but not hating enough to downvote. Unless there's any convincing reason brought up to not do it I think enough people want it that I'll add it given a few days for meta to get a concensus and just see how things go.
