5:00 AM
*scale mail
bluh, tired

so scale could never give me more than 16, whereas leather would rise with my modifier

Exactly. So if you have a high Dex, leather or scale is great
you're not proficient with heavy armor i think, so chain mail is really hard for you to wear

i have 8 dex

ah, so you have -1. thankfully armor does not do negative modifiers

took a little more cha and gave up some dex, because i didn't want us to have two people with 8 cha

5:01 AM
so you should pick Scale to get 14 AC, probably
and you can optionally use Shield for +2, giving you 16

scale it is

Write down the armor in "Equipment" (bottom middle) and write your AC number in the shield icon.
We're almost done :D

got it

Now, put +2 in the "Proficiency Bonus" slot (top left under Inspiration)
All Level 1 characters start with +2 proficiency bonus
we've been applying that as we went along

I already had that there, yay me!

5:04 AM
:D
so now, one last thing. your background gives you some starting items and GP
have you written those down?

I haven't figured out what kind of holy symbol I want

can be anything you want :P
Pan isn't picky

what was on your spell list, bobble? :)

I definitely want something stimmy

msh210 is going to join us potentially, by the way :)
he would like to learn D&D

5:07 AM
Guidance, Mending, Druidcraft, Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals, Purify Food and Drink, Cure Wounds

oooh cool cool :)

of those Druidcraft is the one tied most directly to Pan
and also the one Astrid likes doing the most

msh210, we may have to give you access, hang on :)

haha!
should do the trick
we could make msh210 our tank :D
'cause we need one

For sure :D
Oh, hi, Mith! Hang on, let me give you access
Okay, there we go

5:11 AM
Pan's symbols are pan pipes
is there embroidery on this world?

There can be!

how many players can you handle, 'borg?
with msh210 and mith that would make 5

My second IRL group has me juggling five players at the moment, so i can do 5 :D

I want a bracelet with embroidered pan pipes

So I am going to have a book of secrets that kind looks like a tangle of leaves and butterfly wings and dried flowers and seeds and suchly.

5:12 AM
@Sciborg mods have automatic write access to gallery rooms

These are both beautiful and I love them
Add to inventory

lol - I just realised that I took pan pipes ages ago as my musical instrument from home
maybe I should change that

@Mithical forgot that, sorry :P but hello!

Or you could teach me!

o/

5:13 AM
I doubt I know how to play them

ooh okay :)

in The Sphinx's Lair, 1 min ago, by Mithical
I know nothing about DnD but I've wanted to learn for ages

we have a thing in common though
fey + nature :)

You are welcome to join us! We just finished teaching Bobble how to make a character :)

I am fey-touched so your satyr god probably resonantes

5:14 AM
So right now we have a buff character (me), a spellcaster fighter (Gray), and a ranged attacker (North)

True, I didn't think of the fey-satyr connection - you guys are gonna be on the same wavelength :p

A tank/upfront fighter would be nice from one of you :D

@Sciborg Ooh, great. Can I have a transcript link please (mobile, about to hop on a bus)?

Oh boy, it will be a long transcript - hang on

Also uhm... Can I please reskin "Hellish Rebuke" to "Feywild Rebuke"? :P

5:15 AM
Absolutely :P

(stylised green/purple flame rather than hellfire pls thx)

@bobble you are better at transcripts, can you link to around where we started discussing character creation?

or... a sudden retaliatory strike by a cloud of moths and butterflies and ladybirds and suchly

4 hours ago, by bobble
i call being a dwarf cleric

Excellent, everything after that is character creation tutorial

5:17 AM
I read through the first ~hour of this room and there is so much I don't understand. So I think I'll need to read the rulebook linked there (which anyway it's usually a good idea before starting a game, I've found). I can't just at the moment, though.

There are definitely a lot of rules, if you don't have time i can walk you through it later - no worries :)

So now I just have to figure out who my character is?

Oooh, there's a rulebook pinned

Yup, now it's just all about flavor and Fun Stuff and Backstory

Starboard doesn't show on mobile :P

5:18 AM
The rulebook is indeed pinned, but it is very long :p

(Sorry - I did most of my "fun stuff" first lol)

and maybe pirated...

Arrr

@Sciborg not only for the rules — more because I hope the rulebook will explain some of the other stuff y'all were talking about

5:19 AM
Do you have time for an Explaining D&D Crash Course, or perhaps later? :)

bobble has removed matt from the list of this room's owners.

he said he wanted out, so not room-owner anymore

no worries, yup
you can take off Anon too, they are not playing

they have only read access

that works

5:21 AM
Like, just for example, you said, to explain how dice work, "in 5th you roll a d20 and then add modifiers". I know what a d20 is, but what's a modifier?

A "modifier" is a word for the bonuses (and maybe negatives) that you add to the d20 after you roll it. So for example, attack rolls have special attack modifiers that you calculate with character stats :)

@Sciborg I don't have time right now (unless it's like 5 minutes), I'm afraid.

Ping me when you have time, and I will give you a full Mick's D&D Crash Course :D

@Sciborg Oh, so like if I'm Someone Good At Foraging then I could add three to a roll to find food, let's say?

Yup, that's the idea - stuff you are good at gets positive modifiers, and stuff you are bad at gets negative modifiers.

5:23 AM
Okay, cool.
@Sciborg Thanks. We could start now if you wish, just for a few.
@Sciborg Or maybe I should start with this?

Okay - we've covered modifiers, so now I will explain the Premise of D&D. The premise is that there is a Dungeon Master (DM) and some players (PCs), and the DM makes a world and the players make player characters that go on adventures in the world. It's a game of cooperative storytelling and the goal is to have fun.
So each player makes their own character, and each character has their own race, class, stats, attributes, etc. that you make during character creation.

and personality
most important part

The order of character creation is usually Race -> Class -> Background -> Number Crunching -> Backstory and Personality and Fun Stuff.

Okay.

So when making a character, the first thing you do is to pick a Race.

5:27 AM
Race, I assume you mean like dwarf versus human, not Bantu versus Chinese?

This can be Human, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Goblin etc. Like there's a bunch of options, mostly fantasy and Tolkien-ish options.
It's probably better termed as "Species" honestly.

We have a Dwarf, an Elf, and whatever Ink/Gray is

Basically, if you see it in Tolkien, you can play one in D&D :p
Picking your Race determines some special characteristics and traits, and each one is different and better suited for different classes.

@Sciborg are you keeping track of character sheets?

Mostly, yes

5:28 AM
Great
I've picked a halfling

Awesome :D

But on what basis do I pick a race? Like, why would I chose to be a dragon versus an elf?

Kithri Tealeaf

*choose

I warn you, dwarves apparently think halflings have never produced anything of importance. I'm supposed to look down on you :P

5:30 AM
The basis is a combination of what you want to play from a roleplaying standpoint, and what class you think the race would pair well with.

Sorry, what's a "class"?

I'm a Cleric

So after you pick Race, you move on to Class, which is exactly what you'd expect - Fighter, Cleric, Bard, etc. This determines your spells, powers, weapons, etc.

Class is like what you do :)

@bobble that's fine

5:30 AM
You job / power set / whatever

It's exactly like picking a class in RPGs or World of Warcraft

so if you feel like being sneaky, then maybe pick a Rouge. for example
I've always wanted to play a dwarf cleric so that's what I am

@bobble Ink is a Tabaxi >.> A cat-person

Okay, so I guess… can I be human? not knowing enough about the other races.

yep, human exists

5:31 AM
That works, yup :)

Yes! human! :)

Do you want me to kinda explain what that would give you, benefits-wise?

We are multi-cultural :D

Or we can just keep explaining general stuff.

@Sciborg Please
@Sciborg either way

5:32 AM
Kithri Trealeaf: halfling, 19 years old (so just under adult). Lightfooted. 2 and a half feet tall

sub-race?

Okay, so choosing a Human gives you what's called an "Ability Score Increase." This means that all of your ability scores go up by 1.

That's the lightfooted

ah

Your Ability Scores are the equivalent of your base stats, so being Human just gives you a well-rounded boost to everything.

5:33 AM
@Sciborg that… sounds good

Lawful Good

like me!

As a Human, you also have a Size of Medium (standard) and a speed of 30 feet. This means that you can move 30 feet in one round.
All standard stuff.

Just for comparison, how far can others move in a round?

North is playing a Wood Elf, for example, and they have a special trait called "Fleet of Foot" which lets him move 35 feet.

5:34 AM
ah

Similarly, bobble is playing a Dwarf, which only moves 25 feet i think.
So different Races grant you different speeds.

yeah, got it

30' is standard

Okay, so we've got your race - now we move to Class options

Humans are basically the "average" race

5:36 AM
We have Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorceror and Warlock. They basically do what they sound like they do.

I am going to add a Cleric cantrip to my book of secrets I think >.>

(There are way more classes, but those are the base ones.)

Just to make sure I can bring bobble back to heal us properly

If you pick one that interests you i can start explaining it a bit more?

I don't know what a paladin is (perhaps I should look it up). Not the difference between a sorcerer and a warlock, or a cleric and a monk. And anyway I'm afraid I've got to run. Be back a bit later

5:38 AM
Ah, okay - seeya :)
Mith, it sounds like you have basically already picked everything :P
Are you deciding Class at the moment?

Yep

Paladin = Holy Knight!
... Batman

Deliberating between Rogue and Ranger

They are both extremely fun to play - North is doing Ranger I believe, so we could have two?

we have a Ranger, if that matters

5:42 AM
I should actually take a picture of the book's rundown of each class for msh, hang on
@msh210 - when you get back, here is what each class does

I think I'll go with Ranger

Two Rangers! :D
Let me know if you have class questions, some of it can be confusing

What is a reasonable requirement of a patron who is a crazy faerie dragon? >.>;

Chaotic, probably :P

well yes - I was thinking about what I am tasked with - I guess trying to keep the "wild" in "wilderness"?

5:46 AM
hmm, i think i could come up with something for that...

I dunno - the fae always have some price somewhere :P

rubs DM hands together malevolently

anyways, I am happy not to know and just have random edicts handed down

we may do some RP later for what exactly your patron wants from you :p

got a last name for myself - Stoneleaf. It's not my original one but I don't want to think of my family so I changed it. :)

5:48 AM
Awesome, jotting that down

I have to have an "unfamiliar (to people from here) ritual" so, I was thinking of studying the patterns in my rather chaotic Book of Shadows - which may sometimes include whatever weird request Nathair has today.
?

@Graylocke that is an excellent idea >:P
i may use that book for.... Plot Things

Because I think of the "book" like a cross between a Magic Eye poster and a Rorschach test made out of natural materials.
^^;

even better

What do the patterns in the moth wing page tell me today?

5:50 AM
if you listen very closely, you can hear the DM scheming in the distance
hmm, i will have to get back to you on that one

(I have also been GMing Invisible Sun recently, so this "weird magic" theme is good <3)

Weird magic is hella fun :D

So the book gives me 3 extra non-class cantrips :D

Noice, this is your patron gift thing right?

What is a "bond" supposed to be?

5:52 AM
Like, your Archfey expanded spell list?

@Sciborg Yep - Pact of the Tome... gives me a Book of Shadows.

Ahhh, yup, gotcha

Oh Archfey also expands the list of choices. but Pact of the Tome gives me the book and some cantrips known

i wasn't sure what Pact you picked

I wasn't sure, but this seems cool theme wise :D
it probably is a terrible rules choice ;p

5:53 AM
Archfey Patron Pact of Tome warlock, i dig it >:D
@bobble "bond"?

"bonds"

ah, you mean like on the character sheet

below "ideals"

@bobble as in the background thing?

Do you have any familial or friend bonds?
like, people you know?

5:55 AM
I looked at my background for that and chose "As long as I have this token of my homeland, I can face any adversity in this place."

I think I met a nice priest (?) of Pan (they gave me the bracelet) and one day they went into town and didn't come back. And so I look for them. Does that count?

Can come from background too, yup - i don't remember Acolyte choices off top of my head :)
That works as a Bond

Family doesn't work because I left them
> I owe my life to the priest who took me in when my parents died.
inspired by that option

Oh nice :)

I dig it :D

5:56 AM
will this priest show up at some point?

Potentially, yes
That's why "Bonds" is fun because i can give you NPCs

Personality Traits: Shy, but always up for a ramble about stonework. Loves friends fiercely. Optimistic due to faith.
Ideals: Help those who need it, even if it's hard
Bonds: I look for the priest who gave me my bracelet
Flaws: Too trusting of religious leaders
i got one of each for the last three
thinking that Flaw might work nicely with my Bond :D

I love it :D

Will think of more for the last three, but I'm looking to some other sections first

We should probably go to bed soon, but if you're around tomorrow we can discuss more Character Stuff and i can start doing some worldbuilding/Plot Planning stuff :)

5:59 AM
where would i go?

what do you mean?

quick, though: what's my Initiative?

Oh yes! Initiative o.o;

well, I'll be around since there's nowhere else to go

That will only come up once we get into the first combat, it's just how fast you move

6:00 AM
I'm already online for school stuff

Is it calculated?

You re-roll it each time so we won't put it down on sheets

Oh - there isn't a modifier?

It's a Dexterity roll with Dex modifier, but you re-roll for each combat so no point writing a flat number
you could write your Dex mod there, though, i suppose

There are no specials that let you increase your modifier?

6:02 AM
there are some special abilities that increase it yeah. i don't know if anyone has any right now, though

I guess that's why there is a box there is all o.o;

let me google abilities that increase initiative, i actually forgot
it basically never comes up
36
Q: How high can a PC's initiative bonus get?

NathanSUsually, most PCs rely solely on their Dexterity ability score modifier for their initiative; however, there are ways to get bonuses to initiative. How high can this bonus get? For example, there's the Alert feat (PHB, pg. 165): Always on the lookout for danger, you gain the following benefits: ...

basically very specific abilities can increase it, but we don't have any in this group so it's just a Dex roll

oooh right ^^;

do your D&D groups track initiative differently?

are we doing feats?

6:04 AM
Well I play Pathfinder a lot so... it is more common to have initiative mods

@bobble Not yet, we are level 1 so we can't do feats yet :)
Ahh, Pathfinder has crazy goshdang rules, i feel ya
In 5e it's just a flat roll
i love how Mith is just silently powering through the Player's Handbook on their own :P
this is a level of flex i can never achieve

i needed lots of hand-holding

so can you ever get other skills proficiencies? >.>;

But I like Astrid, she's growing on me

(sorry - I keep asking about flavour and where the rules differ :) )

6:06 AM
no worries @bobble it's a hecking complicated game - you taught me all i know about grid deductions so now it is just my turn to explain stuff :P

Deus and Bubbler deserve some credit

You and Deus and Bubbler, true, but still :P
you are my Grid Tutor and i am your D&D Tutor

we've managed to overflow onto a 4th page of transcript for just today

@Graylocke no worries :) you can get more skill proficiencies if you take some feats as you level up

Ah okay :)

6:08 AM
and some classes get more as they level up i think, like Rogue
but in general you have what you have :p

I feel like I need more plot hooks... Ink has a bunch of Plot Stuff from their Patron and weirdness

Hmm, what kinds of Plot Hooks would you like?

room topic changed to PSE DnD Chatroom: For DnD Campaigns lead by Sciborg. Just ping a RO (North, bobble, Sciborg, Graylocke) for access (no tags)
I dunno

i am staying up way too late, oh dear :p

the only one I thought of so far was the priest thing

6:10 AM
Sorry >.>; I spent most of my time making all my things mesh into a weirdness >.>

i need to sleep now actually
seeya!

me too, it is 1AM :p i got so absorbed
seeya! <3

Night bobble and Mick :) sleeps well, dreams nice :)

you're good Gray, no worries, i love Plot Stuff
good night <3

Seeya

6:11 AM
I'm'a sit here and fill out numbers -.-;
I always do character things and then have to spend time doing the boring numbers part ^^;
Also - Hi Mith ^^; I don't think we have spoken much <.<;

(waves)

You are going to play a halfling ranger? :)
@msh210 is back :) I can help a little if you have easy questions :P

@Sciborg thanks for the list of classes. Bard sounds good. Is there anything else I should read from when I was last in here? There's been a lot of chat. :-)
@Graylocke I don't even know what to ask yet.
But thanks.

No worries - you were just going through the steps of building a character (pg 8 of the PDF).
Step 1 was the race - and you chose human :)
Step 2 is class - and you chose Bard... which is cool because that class has the feature of being able to use their musical talent to make other people inspired to do better!

6:26 AM
@Sciborg lemme know if this all sounds right
Kithri Tealeaf. Lawful Good. 19 years old, lightfooted halfling. Two and a half feet tall. Brown hair worn shoulder length, with hazel eyes. Two small circular scars on her right elbow, and a long jagged scar down her right leg.

Spent every minute possible in the outdoors, teaching herself everything - staying out for months at a time. Naturally curious and loves to explore. Her parents live in a town with other races.

Open and talkative to other people, but if asked about a SO she immediately clams up.
2

awesome - we are a very outdoorsy nature-centric party :)

:D

Which helps unify us because we have very different cultural backgrounds

6:46 AM
@Mithical Wait, you love the outdoors and are close to a tree, but you're an enemy to plants??
@Graylocke Oh, nice.
@Mithical Am I to assume "SO" = "significant other" here?

Knowing all about the good ones means you know how to hurt the bad ones..?

@msh210 yes
@Graylocke that

@Mithical - does she prefer Kithri with no shortening?

Kith is fine

:D
I should do a summarised post too perhaps... Hmm
Most of mine is up there in very spread out chunks ^^:
"Ink" (real name Moon Sight Forest Walker, but doesn't use that any more), a Chaotic Good 18 year old tabaxi (cat-person). Very tall and wiry (6'4") with fur that used to be snow leopard colouring but 2/3 of which is now inverted (black with white rosettes) and one eye is now purple instead of silver.
2
Also has strange habits (from far distant lands), and even though overly curious (to a Flaw) tends to be quite reserved and awkward around new people (who they think have a problem with "evil eye", though it may just be a talking cat person!). Holds that friends are more important than rules or laws or even possessions. Mostly just keeps their moonstone pendant as a moment of home and as an arcane focus, and their weirdly alive Book of Shadows... nothing else is that important.

7:03 AM
@Graylocke Actually, I do have a question. I see the word "cantrip" being thrown about here and there in this chatroom. I'm sure I can Google it, and feel free to tell me to do so, but what's a cantrip?
Oh, sorry, I thought your description ended with "silver". Didn't mean to interrupt it.

@msh210 Sure :) A cantrip is a spell that is specifically level 0. Not only that you can cast it as many times a day as you like. It tends to be a minor magical effect.
It was done after that paragraph (stupid shift+enter) :)

Okay, thanks. What's "level 0"? I mean, I know what the words mean, but what does it mean for a spell to be at level 0?

Oh right - so as your character gains experience points for overcoming various challenges... (with the rest of us in the group!) ... you gain levels which get you better skills and abilities, etc.
Spells are also tied to levels, so you need to achieve certain character levels before you can get certain spell levels.

Got it, thanks.

Level 0 is simply uh... quick and easy magic :)
for those that can use it at all

7:06 AM
Is "cantrip" short for something? It sounds like a portmanteau.
@Graylocke Oh, only some can?

Not everyone has magic :) Classes focused on fighting or skills tend not to. (Barbarian, Fighter, Rogue, etc.)
Rangers have some minor magic, as do Paladins (holy knights).
I think "cantrip" is just an old medieval word brought back into D&D for a specific meaning?
Bards are a spell casting class that focus on magic through art. Technically music, but I have played games where someone wanted poetry magic ;p
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantrip says Scots o.o; TIL! :D

Interesting. Thanks for the info.
So what's one typical example of a cantrip?

Hm - well Ink has some :) One is called "Mage Hand" - it creates a ghostly floating hand that can't move very far away and can't lift really heavy things, but it can pick up small objects or push buttons or pull levers, etc at a distance
like a fairly limited telekinesis, basically.

oh, that's cool

basically there are a set of them, and each class that has cantrips gets a list to choose from
So as a bard, you would get ...
2 cantrips out of the ones listed for Bards which are...
Blade Ward, Dancing Lights, Friends, Light, Mage Hand, Mending, Message, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation, True Strike, Vicious Mockery :D

7:22 AM
And I assume I have to pick 2 now, not switch them all the time according to my needs?

Yeah, you can learn more as you get more skilled :)

Okay. I'd obviously want to know what they do before I pick two. You've already explained Mage Hand. (Again, feel free to tell me to Google. Or maybe it's in the rulebook, which I just downloaded and holy mother of Gargantua, it's 293 pages long

The handbook is quite intimidating

So Blade Ward is a defensive spell, Dancing Lights makes little will-o-wisp type lights (I have that one!), Friends charms someone into liking you (until the spell wears off!), Light lights up an area, Mage Hand I explained, Mending lets you fix simple things that are broken without tools,
Message sends a whispered phrase to someone you can see, Minor Illusion is a simple illusionary trick, Prestidigitation is the multi-purpose cantrip, True Strike lets you amp up your next hit to be more likely to hit, Vicious Mockery I think is a psychic attack spell
(pants)
That's the quick and dirty summary from off the top of my head >.>;
And the rulebook is huge, yes... but you don't need to understand all of it to play :) Only Mick need worry about that ;p

Sorry, what's prestidigitation? (And I searched for "mage hand" in the book, and it doesn't explain it. It lists it among spells, and it explains what happens to it at higher levels, but it doesn't explain what it does from the outset. Unless I missed it.)

7:30 AM
Right Prestidigitation is kind of like the swiss army knife of cantrips. It does one of any number of very tiny magical effects. Mostly anything that you would expect a conjurer to do?

Got it.

Also it lets you instantly clean and iron your clothing without doing so.. basically mundane, non-hero type things

Sounds very useful. :-)

It is, yes... unfortunately I didn't take it because well >.>; Ink's patron isn't very practical

Ink's patron meaning Graylocke?

7:33 AM
hahah - no though that too :P
Bard's get their magic through understanding how music contains magic... I guess
Warlock's get their magic gifted to them by a "patron"... a weird being from another plane of existence... in Ink's case, a faerie dragon.

ah

There is the snippet for that spell, the rest have far more specific rules, that one is a little more... tool-box-like >.<

Cool. I assume you have a limited number of "action"s, or a limited number per turn, or something? (Since it says you can do something "as an action".)

Yes :D

Oh, wait, it says on top "casting time: 1 action"

7:37 AM
Only really relevant in combat, where timing of everyone's actions becomes important

ah

So to handle how everything is happening "at once"... time gets divided up and everyone has to say what they do each turn, and you only get a certain number of actions (of certain types) each turn. I will let Mick explain that in context when it happens ;p
Most spells take up the primary action in your turn, is the main thrust
So "1 action" is the standard.
So comparing to Mage Hand:
It's also a single action, it has fewer range requirements, but it doesn't last as long and has a more specific effect.
A more interesting question - what instrument do you play? :P
