10:00 PM
If you need to sleep too, msh, let me know - I don't know what timezone you are in.

(same as me)

@Mithical yes

Oh dear ;-; maybe we can pick this up later!

@Sciborg I'll be up for a little more.
@Sciborg what's your tz again?

I just got up at six today so I'm a bit tired. I'll probably be back in around eight hours

10:01 PM
I'm Detroit timezone, so it's 5:01 PM where I am.
Good night Mith :)

Ah, right.

So I’d be more likely to be up. Is there at least a way I can help with puzzles or something?

@Mithical good night

@ThePuzzlingPlatypus if you want to help me design some campaign puzzles later that would be great, could use some help on that :)
So we've got msh as a Human Bard with Athlete Background. Now we can deal with ability scores.

@Sciborg if I have any ideas or time. I really only know how to do riddles.

10:03 PM
Basically msh, we'll use something called "Point Buy" to determine your character's Ability Scores. This calculator lets you do that: chicken-dinner.com/5e/5e-point-buy.html
If you select "Human" it should automatically apply your Human +1 boost to all scores.

What stats should a Human Bard be god at?

Charisma will be the big one for sure
(basically how well you talk to people and/or persuade, do social stuff)

What's the ability score for?

The discussion on the discord says they don’t play anymore

Each score is a particular thing you are good at, and affects your attacks, skills and rolls later.

10:06 PM
@Sciborg okay. I can spend 27 points adding various abilities, is that the idea?

Strength is how strong you are, Dexterity is how fast and nimble you are, Charisma is your people skills, Wisdom is how much street smarts and insight you have, Constitution is how many hitpoints you have and how tough you are, and Intelligence is how smart you are.
Yup, that's the idea!

Haven’t touched it since February of last year.

@Sciborg what's a hitpoint?

Health

Hitpoints are just how much you can get hit.

10:07 PM
ah okay

It's your health, yeah

When I hit you with my warhammer, you lose hitpoints

@bobble so, um, please don't

I can also use Cure Wounds to heal you after warhammering you :D

Please don't hit me with your warhammer.

10:08 PM
i love how the immediate reaction from two people was "please don't" on that :p

So I should probably add more points to abilities that others added less to, no?

Astrid doesn't particularly like using her warhammer but she's quite good at it.

@mith discord is a non-option apparently.

It depends on how you want to play the character :)

@ThePuzzlingPlatypus welp

10:09 PM
If you plan to be a spellcasting bard, Intelligence/Charisma are good.
But a melee bard will want to be good at Strength/Constitution/Charisma.
That kind of thing

@msh210 I think this makes sense......

Party balance is secondary to fun, in my view

So I can’t play ever because I don’t know how and discoed doesn’t play another

Sorry, there are subtypes of bard?

well be afk for a bit

10:10 PM
@Sciborg okay

Yup, you can pick one now if you like or wait until later.

I’m still convinced I’ll never play. You didn’t set a limit on how long this lasts
And discord doesn’t play anymore.

@Sciborg where are the types? roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Bard#content doesn't list them (unless I'm missing it)

That’s for serious topics. And again: I don’t know how.

10:12 PM
@msh210 Bard subtypes are "Schools," let me see if i can find them on roll20.

Just saying, what if you need to incapacitate an enemy without killing them. You’ll need a platypus for that

 The Back Room: Live Tabletop Games

A space for online tabletop gaming.

Still doesn’t fix the problem where I don’t know how or know those people

@msh210 Look for "College of []" on roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Index%3ASubclasses
It has Lore and Valor, I believe, which are the two PHB options
@ThePuzzlingPlatypus I am planning on giving you the crash course after we are finished with character stuff, please be patient for a bit.

It’s fine. I’m on the way home anyway. I’ll ping you when it’s time.
I’ll need to be on my actual computer for that

10:18 PM
@Sciborg yes, and Valor has no description

Crap! Okay, hang on, let me see if 5e-tools has it.

Lore does, though, and sounds good.

Here is a source for Valor if you want to compare: dnd5e.wikidot.com/bard:valor

I’ll gladly help with the puzzles though

I'll be a Lore College Bard if that's all right.

10:24 PM
Sounds great :D
And you've got ability scores, right?

um, no

the point buy?

Do that real quick :P

I never actually did that. Hang on...

Important thing also: i'm assuming you are filling out a 5e character sheet as you're going?

10:26 PM
Never assume. :-) And no, I'm not.
Where's that?

I have committed an assumption folly, my bad :p

It's a place where you record information about your character - what the look like, their personality, their equipment, their stats

If you look up D&D 5th Edition Character Sheet on Google, there should be a high-quality one you can grab off D&D Beyond - let me find the link

thanks
Do the numbers from the Point Buy go on the left side of page 1?

Yup :) those are your Ability Score locations. The big number goes in the large box, and the "Modifier" goes in the little oval.

10:32 PM
hm, I think this is gonna have to wait until I'm on a computer rather than a phone

I could fill out a character sheet for you, except that I am going to be busy son

No worries. We can stop there for now

Again, i can soon

Ah, you're going very well-rounded. Looks good!

10:35 PM
Does that make sense?
Okay.

You will be relatively solid at everything

Oh wait
I mixed up wisdom and intelligence
I meant them the other way.
Anyway, what else am I supposed to fill in on that "sheet" (three sheets) at this point?

well, name

Once you fill in the Ability Scores, we can discuss Skills

for "Race" put Human
for "Background" put Athlete

10:38 PM
okay

for "Class & Level" put Bard, 1
for "Speed" put 30ft

For name… I guess a nice human-y name, but a good one for an athlete-turned-bard. Hm…

I'm tempted to offer a Greek or Roman name like Apollo or Hermes

Cadmus popped into my head for some reason
by the way, I think we've been assuming your character is male?

João Ferreira. And yes, male.

10:42 PM
Any nicknames?
Or just João?

I love it

Just João I think. I guess if "Common" = English then you can call me Johnny as a nickname
(John is the English equivalent)

Johnny the Bard. It is beautiful.
Poetic

@Sciborg I like it

I love it :D

10:47 PM
Oh I didn't pick a good/evil, lawful/anarchic thingy.

Yes, that's important
I think we're mostly Chaotic Good?

I'm Lawful Good
There are rules and you follow them

Johnny the Bard don't need no rules.

I think a Lore Bard should be Chaotic, no?

True Neutral
Is the way

10:50 PM
It's a good thing we all like nature, otherwise I'm not sure why we stick together

I guess Chaotic Neutral?

DM shifts nervously

is that not good? I mean it's not Good, but… oh, you know what I mean

it's totally fine, i'm not worried. do i sound worried? i'm not.

lol

10:52 PM
North, does Fen have an alignment? :P

Urm
Neutral good
He's a pure boi

Pure Forest Child
With a Wolf Buddy

Do we have a name for our party?
@Sciborg I wouldn't say pure

Y'all gotta come up with a party name at some point :p
Hey, Quintec!

@Sciborg I propose The Donner Party.
(kidding)

10:58 PM
Oh lord :p

@Sciborg What's a treasure?
