11:00 PM
As in, the treasure box on your character sheet? That's for keeping track of miscellaneous non-equippable loot that you pick up, basically
The Professional Term is "vendor trash"

Ah
"sellable junk"

Yup

I love how in undertale you can't sell your items because the shopkeeper is like "Why would I want your junk?"

The only true realism :P
"Why would I want, like, a bunch of wolf furs and sticks??"

"Why would I want your diamonds and rubies? I'll let the bandits rob you, not me"

11:02 PM
"do you know how easy it is to just conjure gemstones nowadays?? i can walk down the street to Billy and he can make me a diamond for five bucks"

"The items aren't even for sale, this isn't a store"

I hope you know i'm absolutely going to play up the fact that conjuration spells have completely ruined the small item economy

i can fix things

"These multi-millionaire stone conjurors are putting the mom-and-pop businesses out of business"

if you break your small items I can Mend them!

11:05 PM
Or if you break my small items
Dwarf

But can you mend a broken spirit, is the deeper question

Mine has already been broekn

(reminder to self: he's Fen's dad, he's okay)

You just know some bard, not naming names, has probably written a song about how "you can cast Mending all you want / but you can't Mend my broken heart"

@bobble Adopted brother, thank you very much

11:07 PM
no you're clearly his dad
for one thing you're big

No, you're just short

nah, Kith agrees with me
you're too tall

But Ink agrees with me that you and Kith are too short

Y'ALL ARE TOO TALL, YAH HEAR ME?

I guess the human bard will have to settle this debate
Oh, @Sciborg what's with the gold stuff per class?

11:11 PM
That's just starting gold, it is determined by your Background :)

So I don't get more gold than 10 ;-;

^ that's all I've got so far. Should I be filling more in?

11:12 PM
Skills next? Or equipment?
Your Hit Points are 8 + Constitution modifier
so 10
And your hit dice are 1d8

!roll 1d8
dangit

no, just write "1d8"
i think

(kidding, I wasn't really expecting that to work)

RPG.SE has a die-rolling bot

wait, what? we really do have a bot for that?
1d8
no, okay, I didn't think so

11:14 PM
I'm saying write 1d8 in for hit dice

ohhhhhhhh got it

Oh I want money so I can buy a longsword >:(

so, um, there's a lot more stuff to do, not sure what 'borg wants you to do next
I can just show you through various parts of the sheet for a bit?

Skills for sure.

the top-right, traits-ideals-bonds-flaws -- I saw those listed somewhere. Maybe on the Bard description page??

11:16 PM
(Sorry, my microwave decided to be broken and I had to run off for a bit)

Okay, so Skills next. What do I do in that section?

Choose any three skills

Basically, each Skill is a specific thing that your character is good at. Making a skill roll to do stuff is called making a skill check.

You're proficient in those skills (you get a bonus to rolling with them)

If you look at the little skill names, there are grey indicators that tell you what ability is for each skill.
Put that ability modifier in that spot, and then if you're proficient in that skill, fill the bubble and add +2 to the modifier.
You don't choose any three skills, it is determined by class and background.

11:18 PM
> Put that ability modifier in that spot, and then if you're proficient in that skill, fill the bubble and add +2 to the modifier.
huh?

Bards choose any three skills

Ahh, right - bard thing. Sorry
So for example, Perception, right? If you look at the grey thing, it says that Perception uses Wisdom.
Therefore, you would put the Wisdom modifier in that spot.

meaning 2 in my case

Yup
And then, if you are proficient in Perception, you can add +2 to that modifier and bubble in the bubble next to it.
Repeat for all skills in the list.

So I flll in the modifiers for all skills, but the bubbles (and +2) for three skills?

11:20 PM
Yup. Your Athlete background also gives you two more.
So you would be proficient in five in total.

oh cool

> Acrobatics, Athletics

Yup

those are the Athlete proficiencies
of course Athletes get Athletics
almost too obvious

suspiciously obvious

11:23 PM
@Mithical Quick advice: If you want to be good with animals, you should opt for the "animal handling" skill. And also, swap the numbers for "Intelligence" and "Wisdom", so that wisdom is one higher than intelligence- rangers use their Wisdom stat for spellcasting

i'm attempting to microwave a snack and the microwave is making demonic screaming noises, oh my god

Ofc 'borg knows more, so they can call me out for being a complete idiot and I don't know what I'm talking about

i am concerned

@Sciborg DEMON
Prepares arrow

You're correct on the stat stuff North, no worries :P

11:24 PM
(a) Did I do this right? (b) Reasonable choices?

Also @bobble I believe Mith gets a skill in survival for being an outlander

(a) Yup! (b) Looks reasonable

@Sciborg I always knew there was something wrong with microwaves....

Performance definitely makes sense for a Bard

@Sciborg thanks
@bobble yeah, I thought so...

11:25 PM
i'm tempted to record it so you can hear the devilish screeching sounds

Kith has that bubbled in, no worries

And athletics (for bobble for mith's updated skill)
Oh okay
I guess I'm looking at an outdated sheet

So now msh has Skills, let's do Saving Throws next.
Bards are proficient in Charisma and Dexterity saves I believe?

What are saving throws used for?

I'll send the completed sheet to 'borg and Mith, do you want me to email it to you as well North?

11:27 PM
Sure

(once I'm done with Astrid. since I'll send them to 'borg at the same time as Kith)

I can send mine too for verification

Basically, saves are used for reacting to traps, certain spells, and some effects. So you might make a save to do a last-minute dodge from some dragonfire, for example.

will there be last-minute dodges from dragonfire?

11:27 PM
Would love to see sheets :D

"charisma saves" sounds vaguely Christian

@bobble i cannot confirm or deny

@msh210 You bedazzle the Devil
I finished my character sheet for now, I think, so I'll send it to borg and bobble

Awesome :D

Bard has "Saving Throws: Dexterity, Charisma". So what do I put in that section of the sheet?

11:29 PM
Bubble in Dexterity and Charisma saving throw proficiencies, just as you would with a skill, and do the rest like you would do a skill :)

ah okay
?

Yup!

okay cool

I love how you are perfectly rounded
Only 0, 2 and 4 for you :p
It's like a zen thing

Msh has very balanced stats in general
(Meanwhile here I am min/maxing with an 8 in two stats)

11:31 PM
Received character sheet, i will put it in my DM Notes folder :)

It's okay, I have 17 dexterity points so I'm not missing any bow and arrow shots :P
(hopefully)

I only need one arm to snipe your ass

if you get yourself in trouble I'll heal you, no worries

I might already be dead with my 10 HP and 13 AC tho

Glass cannon for the win :p

11:34 PM
It's okay I'm proficient in... 6 skills

what's HP & AC?

hit points, armor class

HP is your health

HP = Hitpoints, and AC = Armor Class

AC is armor class, which is like
Damage reduction, I think

11:34 PM
No, AC is how hard you are to hit
Doesn't help when you are hit unfortunately

hit points is how much you can be hit, armor class is how hard you are to hit

Ohhhh didn't know that
Wait so how does armor play into AC?

to survive you have to either not be hit or be able to soak up damage

Right @bobble
Armor grants you AC depending on the type of the armor.

11:36 PM
We can do Armor Class next, actually. I think bards start with leather armor?

That makes so much more sense why it takes the Dex modifier
Rather than your con

You've got my back today bobble :P

@Sciborg Btw, does my mask of the wild pair up well with fog cloud spell?

So, Leather Armor grants you 11 + Dex mod AC.

11:37 PM
Or can anybody hide in the (thick) fog?

msh's Dex modifier is +2, so msh, you start with 13 AC.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr It pairs super well

Oh okay, that's what I thought :P

It's a great combo :P
13 AC for msh isn't terribly bad, but it does make you rather glass cannon-y, just like North

Something might happen on discord
I want to work on that platypus druid idea, but I have no idea what i'm doing

Yup, I saw. I am glad you found a group! :)
Do you want some help character building later?

11:39 PM
Yes

oh, did msh210 fill in passive wisdom?

I need a crash curse

Awesome, give me a bit and I will message you on Discord.

@bobble Not yet. @msh210, once you've got 13 AC, make sure to note that you Passive Perception is 10 + Perception modifier.

11:40 PM
@Sciborg no, "Light Armor"

? i think Leather Armor

you're proficient in light armor
that's a class of armor
leather armor is a specific type of light armor

ohhhh sorry

Yup. That is confusing sorry
You start with leather armor, which grants you 13 AC because of your Dex mod :)

okay, hang on, I'm catching up on back-read here....
@Sciborg why 10?

11:42 PM
because

It's just because

that's just the number

oh it's 10 for everyone?

Yup

oh okay

11:43 PM
It basically simulates an average Perception roll.
You would roll a 10 plus your mod
That "average" value represents how good you are at Perception while not actively looking for things.

I don't see where to put passive perception, though

Bottom left, right below the last Ability Score.
It's a circle and a horizontal box

ah thanks

Awesome, now we can do Attacks and weapons :D
This is where it gets fun

11:46 PM
okay. But not for much longer, considering that it's 1:46 am

If you need to sleep we can stop here, it's totally fine - i don't want to ruin your sleep schedule
We made a ton of progress

I should but... let's continue a little

Okay, so now you get to pick your starting equipment off Bobble's list. Each bullet point gives you a choice from a couple options.

yeah, I'm reading their descriptions....

19 hours ago, by Sciborg
Simple weapons: Club, Dagger, Greatclub, Handaxe, Javelin, Light hammer, Mace, Quarterstaff, Sickle, Spear.
Your simple weapon options, for convenience

11:48 PM
I'd choose Entertainer, personally, since I don't think we'll have much occasion for fine clothes and suchlike
but choose whatever you want

so let's say I choose dagger. Where do I put it?

"Equipment", bottom middle

I mean, I put it in its sheath. But where do I list it, I mean?

So, you see the box with "Attacks and Spellcasting"?
There are those rows of three horizontal boxes.

@Sciborg yeah

11:49 PM
Box #1: Weapon Name.
Box #2: Weapon Modifier. Daggers use Dexterity, so it's your Dex mod + 2 since you are proficient.
Box #3: Weapon damage dice + appropriate modifier. (No proficiency.)
The weapon also has a damage type, i.e. slashing, bludgeoning, or piercing. I think daggers are piercing.

??
Oh wait -- I'm not choosing dagger, as I get one anyway.

Looks good to me, +4 and 1d4 + 2 piercing damage.
Repeat for all weapons.

yeah, no room in the box for "piercing" so I put "prc" :-)

the boxes are quite small, unfortunately :P

what modifier for a rapier? roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Rapier#h-Rapier doesn't seem to say

11:54 PM
1d8 piercing, and it's "finesse" so it uses Dexterity.

okay

(on an unrelated note, are you using the form fillable PDF version of the character sheet? once you are finished you will have to select "Print" and -> Export to PDF, which unfortunately makes it non-editable but preserves the boxes.)

@Sciborg I am, yes. But I thought Acrobat Reader saves filled forms....

uh oh i just noticed that there are specific spots for money

Ah, if you have Reader then it's fine - i wasn't sure if you were using Reader or not.

11:56 PM
kith has their money listed in Equipment

Where do I list my Entertainer's Pack, leather armor, and musical instrument?

Those can go in "Equipment."

I also have to choose proficiencies... but not tonight. But when I do, where will I list them?

Which proficiencies? Language, tool, etc?
Those would go in bottom left box "Proficiencies"

@Sciborg ah I see

11:58 PM
Yup, those all go in "Proficiencies"

not the Saving Throws or Skills
since those proficiencies are already marked

right okay
