Q: What is the difference between "anyone" and "everyone" in this context

yasar11732For example, Anyone is welcome to do such and such. and Everyone is welcome to do such and such. mean exactly the same thing to me. But since I am not a native speaker, I guess there might be some subtle difference. Can anyone explain?

Funny, my gut feeling was exactly the other way round than in the currently accepted answer.

Yes. I think I agree with you

user19161
9:19 PM
@matt I voted for you!

Thanks @JasperLoy :)

I think you are drawing distinctions that do not exist, especially when you add the implication "who wants to" to anyone. That is entirely unwarranted. — Robusto 14 secs ago
This guy is just making shit up.
@tchrist raises hand sheepishly

user19161
@Robusto Yes, I think there is no difference at all. In fact it is common in the mathematical literature to say "for any x,..." and "for every x,...".

user19161
Wait, that question has seven answers?

Would like to see a reliable source that supports the claims made in this answer. — ΜετάEd 39 secs ago

9:25 PM
I think there is a difference. If I say "Anyone can become president," it implies a finite number of people for a one-at-a-time slot. If I say "Everyone can become president," it implies that all U.S. citizens will get their turn, or that they can all be president at the same time.
But in the main the two are interchangeable.

"Does anyone else want ice cream?" "Does everyone else want ice cream?" Clearly different.
But neither of them mean "Does every damned person on the planet want ice cream?"

@ΜετάEd but you added 'else'.
I cuss, you cuss, we all cuss for asparagus.

user19161
Well, of course whether there is a difference or not usually depends on the exact context.

@cornbreadninja because it makes our wee smell funny

@MattЭллен uh oh; I just ate a bunch last night.

9:35 PM
well, I hope you like the smell of assparagas

user19161
@MattЭллен Asses don't smell nice usually. They either smell bad or have no smell in general.

I bet they smell like donkeys

Q: "I'm not being" or "I'm not been"?

Loureiro Gui I'm not been able to make up my mind or I'm not being able to make up my mind? Which one is the correct sentence? Why is it correct and why is the other one incorrect?

Is there some funky dialect where people say "I'm been"?

user19161
@RegDwightАΑA Never heard of.

9:37 PM
I can't think of one, but I have a cold, so my faculties are dulled

Awww
Are you saying you're not on fire?

I am become on fire.

I'm more of a damp squib

@cornbreadninja Yes.

user19161
What did you get for breakfast @matt?

9:39 PM
Hence my question.

@JasperLoy I got some pastries

@MattЭллен :d please describe the pastries.

user19161
@MattЭллен Hmm, pastries also come from the ass.

@JasperLoy you have some crazy equines in Singapore!

user19161
@MattЭллен Luckily, I know this is a whoosh, phew!

9:41 PM
@cornbreadninja they are called cinnamon swirls

@MattЭллен mm-hmm, yes, go on

9:42 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Yes, I like readers of the transcript to be enlightened.

@JasperLoy okay can we cut down on the poo please?

@JasperLoy Do you have a sacred pastry producing ass in Singapore?

Could we please go back to asstalking instead?

user19161
@MattЭллен Yes, look no further, I am here!

@cornbreadninja It's very sweet, so I think it's just enough, for breakfast anyway

@MattЭллен as much as I like stuff like that, I never want it for breakfast.
Now, a frosted, Americanized "scone" on the other hand...

@MattЭллен why horse has seven legs?

user19161
@cornbreadninja I always think that British scones are nicer. I have no justification for this thought.

user19161
9:45 PM
@cornbreadninja I like their potato salad.

@JasperLoy blech!
@JasperLoy I'm anti-mayonnaise.

@cornbreadninja looks like bloody mess wrapped up in sheets. Then again, what do you expect from Starbucks.

user19161
@cornbreadninja In fact, potato salad is one of my faves!

@cornbreadninja I don't understand what this is

9:48 PM
@MattЭллен a frosting-laden pumpkin scone :d
Hao I play map game?

user19161
@cornbreadninja You need a map to start with.

user19161
Here is my invisible map. Now you can guess what place this is.

@MattЭллен really, it's just dense pumpkin spice cake in triangular form.

@cornbreadninja it's neither pumpkin nor scone. it looks like a crêpe

@JasperLoy Istanbul, not Constantinople

9:49 PM
@cornbreadninja I see, sort of. a cake
@cornbreadninja now I have that song in my head :D

Maybe easy?

@MattЭллен what do you think? :D

Here's an easy one for you.

9:51 PM
regrets not riding London Eye

@JosephWeissman it's tricky, I don't recognise anything...

@JosephWeissman Australia?

No, but not that far off

@MattЭллен I said "easy", not "the first thing that comes to your mind because you live there".

user19161
I know where all these places are. They are in this chat, of course.

9:52 PM
With more context:

Are there two Thameses in London?

New Jersey.

@JosephWeissman Borneo

Hehe :D
Not quite!

9:53 PM
Old Jersey.

Will Delaware her New Jersey? Idaho, Alaska.

@RegDwightАΑA are there two rivers in the photo? Is that a littler one below the bigger one? I thought it was a road

Hint: it's the most populous nation on the planet. :D

singapore

I guess that's too big a hint, really.
Ding! @MattЭллен

9:54 PM

@JosephWeissman I'm looking at that area right now.
Damn I was too slow.
Shot myself in the foot by searching for Kuril first.
Turns out Google doesn't have images of that.
Now guess mine already, slackers.

Is it in Europe?

@cornbreadninja Oh! that makes more sense now :D

@cornbreadninja looks like OVER 9000 kcal.

9:58 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Was that on the list?

@RegDwightАΑA was it not London?

@tchrist Wow, geek humour stuff.
@JosephWeissman Does it look like London? Have you seen London? Tsk tsk tsk.

Amsterdam would be another guess; I know they've got lots of little rivers in the city.

@RegDwightАΑA tastes like it, too. :d

@RegDwightАΑA γνῶθι σεαυτόν

9:59 PM
Hm. I really thought it would be easier.

@RegDwightАΑA yeah, I've actually been to London a few times, so you think I should know better :)
Would you maybe give a hint? Or maybe a pic with a bit more context?

cornbreadius exodus

Is it Venice?
I've not been there

Ooooh, that's a good guess.

Look. There's a Wiki you can read and a YouTube you can watch. I'm trying to be helpful, you know.
The video is excellent, actually.
Shows everything you need to know in just two minutes.
And in English, too.

but that takes clicking and stuff...

There was a cathedral, then there was an explosion, then there almost was an Empire State Building with an OVER-9000-storey Lenin statue atop, then there was war, then there was a huge swimming pool, then there was a cathedral.

@cornbreadninja I took out "else".
@JasperLoy Not anymore.

I still remember the swimming pool. It was gigantic.

ΜετάEdHow to use anyone and everyone as they are typically used in English Everyone means all of the group. Anyone means all or any part of the group. it is a military structure

My point.

but that's kinda irrelevant to the guessing

Damn. I tried a couple UK cities, turns out they're all in the middle of the island. Don't you have a single port, you losers?
How did you ever beat the Spanish, is beyond me.

All this ice cream is making me hungry. Time to go home.

Where's @Joseph gone anyway?
I can't be guessing alone!
We only started this because of him.
@Cerberus, too.

I'm so sorry.
I'm here.

I will jpegerise it, and maybe that will make it easier to upload

What's the question about it?

Where is it?
(Venezia?)

Plymouth Hoe.
What's the question?

@ΜετάEd Aye, the maps game is to guess the location
@ΜετάEd ding!

@JosephWeissman you and your Venice. Not everywhere is Venice.

I had focussed on where the pilgrim fathers supposedly left from

10:24 PM
Nice!
@RegDwightАΑA are you entirely certain about that? :D

@MattЭллен who is Plymouth Ho, and why I never heard?

It's an English city, right?

In Australia.

@ΜετάEd Can everyone explain?

10:25 PM
@RegDwightАΑA so many thwack, so little time

Plymouth Hoe, referred to locally as the Hoe, is a large south facing open public space in the English coastal city of Plymouth. The Hoe is adjacent to and above the low limestone cliffs that form the seafront and it commands views of Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and across the Hamoaze to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon word Hoe, a sloping ridge shaped like an inverted foot and heel. History Until the early 17th century large outline images of the giants Gog and Magog (or Goemagot and Corineus) had for a long time been cut into the turf of the Hoe ex...

an ox bow lake!

Yeah I didn't know it looked like that from above.
I wasn't aware there was a lake at all.

That's gorgeous.

I can give two hints, should you need them.

it looks somewhat deserted, so my first guess is Chernobyl

10:35 PM
Ha. Deserted is probably not that far off the mark, in a way.

there is a bit that looks like Italy

Last I heard it wasn't too popular with the people.

is it the olympic village?

Note how highly regular everything is. Let me zoom in a bit.

Is it in Germany?

10:39 PM
I did see that, even from the wide shot...

@MattЭллен It is not unsimilar in that it's obviously heavily planned and not old.
@MattЭллен no.

user19161
The Olympics is like showing 24/7 on one of the channels here...

@JosephWeissman here's another hint, then. It's a capital.

Hmmm...

is the bigger pic all of the capital?

user19161
10:41 PM
@RegDwightАΑA Moscow.

@MattЭллен hold on a sec, third picture incoming.

Not Moscow, I don't think...

@JasperLoy Moscow is old

@MattЭллен According to Wikipedia, that huge green area with another lake belongs to it, too.

@MattЭллен I thought Reg likes cows. He is always saying holy cow of Moscow.

@JasperLoy that would be Hermes of Futurama fame.

is it a dam?
no, it can't be a dam

When you say 'capital' -- you mean of a country, or a province like a state in the US?

10:45 PM
@MattЭллен the only mention of "dam" in the entire Wikipedia article is that in Amsterdam, which is one of its twin cities, of which it has another nineteen.

@JosephWeissman country. And not a tiny one, I might add.
