@Kulfy thanks <3 That message gave me a good feeling
:)
@EliahKagan that one is closed. The wording seems bad to me. What to they mean by "make batch"? Is it a reference to Windows?
@Shree I think that @Kulfy meant that Natty is perhaps not using the threshold in the way we think here. Not that talking about Natty is off-topic here. This is definitely the place to talk about Natty :)
@Kulfy uh-oh that's going to be a rejected migration
no worries

@EliahKagan the commenter wrote an answer to that question
(they also deleted their original comment, so I removed mine too)

@karel I think that restarting the system is actually a method to restart pulseaudio, so not OT. Voting to close it as a dupe instead (target is in a comment).

@pomsky The current usage of is misleading IMHO. Users are using it for geolocation and the absolute location of files/folders. is better, I think (and thanks for adding that).
Couple of months ago Zanna pointed out that we have [location] which is being currently misused as I pointed out and she correctly suggested using [geolocation]
@Zanna Oh. You're back one day before the schedule!!

yes, I allowed myself slightly more time than I needed to get my off-site work done :D
so happy to be back ^__^

@Zanna OP edited the question and mentioned that they are observing similar behaviour on Ubuntu with Cinnamon desktop. Does that make it on-topic? IMO they should've posted a new question. The question is now back to Stack Overflow.
@Zanna I see.
@Zanna Exactly.

8:22 AM
@Kulfy yes that is on-topic
oops
have I messed up?
yes, I have messed up
damn
I reopened it... that caused it to get locked, so I unlocked it
not sure if I am improving matters or just making it worse and worse XD

Uh oh.. I just commented on SO
Should I delete my comment over there?

hmm I think so
I'm very sorry for messing it up!

yes...I think the migration is rejected
but that's ok
it's still closed

so it will get deleted

I would have retracted my close vote if there was a notification in my inbox regarding OP's comment.
So, I don't think its completely your fault.

8:31 AM
don't worry, it's definitely not your fault
the situation on SO is alright I think
just have to try to clean it up here
I can probably figure out some way to edit the question

Oh. I edited it meanwhile :)

afk for a while, will check later, but thanks a lot for fixing it!

Some comments over there are no longer needed.
(unrelated to above) dupe. Since the extension's name has been changed since 12.04, should there be an index to jump to answer applicable to specific version? The question title is already general enough and the accepted answer won't be applicable for newer releases, I think.

@Kulfy Is ne more appropriate than fp for Natty? Because the edit needed was stylistic, It didn't change the answer's actual content. I'm talking about this answer.

@user3140225 Yes it didn't change the actual content but I tend to provide ne wherever editing is required no matter if it needs small editing or a massive editing. ne and fp would still trigger fp, I think.

Not sure what info to request for either problem asked about here
there might be more first posts needing review than usual.......

@Zanna I've commented.

@Kulfy thanks, that's what I was hoping would happen :)

I'll wait for at least 2 days in case OP doesn't reply/clarify their question to cast close vote.

I don't believe in waiting

I wait because reopening takes time and since the redesign of close banners, a delete button is shown beside edit button in the banner which I believe encourages user to delete their question and ask a new one instead of editing old one.
@Zanna Is it having serious issues? I'm not sure if the answer is correct

11:51 AM
@Kulfy oh yeah... right
@Kulfy actually it seems like it might make sense
I'm just looking for evidence that OP is using Zsh
seems absent
but this answer is only for Zsh

This answer claims that issue is with ZSH and got a downvote from low reputation/unregistered user.

maybe it is correct then. I mean the fact that they are having this problem points to Zsh being used. The other answer also mentions it

wouldn't it be better to use .profile than /etc/zsh/zprofile
@Kulfy also seems to need focus haha

@Zanna Maybe yes but people have their own preferences.
@Zanna I opted for OT.

12:01 PM
@Kulfy Talking about principle of least privilege

Not everyone follows that. Users tend to give files 777 permissions to even text files. :/

@Kulfy I commented. I think it's mostly unclear, but I don't want it to look like everyone thought so

@Zanna They probably mean make a script. I don't think it's unclear. Causing an arbitrary action to be triggered (like, commands to be run) when the MAC address of a network adapter is changed is not something that I expect to vary a lot based on what action it happens to be. I've commented and voted to reopen.

@Zanna honestly one of the OSes I did not mention This makes question OT, I think.

@Kulfy I said "x would be better" (meaning, we should suggest) you said "people have their own prefs" (meaning, all things are equal), I said [all things are not equal]. You said [people do foolish things] <-- should we not suggest to those 777 people not to do that?
@EliahKagan even if it is not unclear, maybe we could ask them what they mean in order to write it more clearly?

12:07 PM
@Zanna Oh. I didn't intrepret it that way.

@Zanna Unfortunately the answer is way less clear than the comment was. Is anybody who doesn't already know the answer going to know what "introduce a new wrong-version apt-source for packages" means?

@Kulfy we can assume this is my fault :D
@EliahKagan alas
can it be fixed?

@EliahKagan A PPA or a 3rd party repo?

@Kulfy I've voted to close the question as off-topic and also voted to undelete that answer.

@Zanna Or the way human brain functions :)

@Kulfy Oh, sorry. I've retracted my close vote and the answer should remain deleted.

Excellent. Thanks.

I think I should probably edit that question again scratches head
no, @Kulfy your edit was great

@EliahKagan This is a case where mentioning that it had also originally happened with the unofficial derivative would actually have value. I'm not proposing that be added though.

12:12 PM
Did I miss something? I thought I've already added essential details.

it looks perfectly fine, I was just momentarily confused by my memory of the previous version when reading the current first part

@EliahKagan I'm not sure if that would be useful considering the topicality of the site.
@Zanna Oh okay.

@Kulfy It could be that I'm misjudging how likely my own mistake is. But it seems to me that anyone who sees the question and delete answer, even if only in the current form, will think the OP means they installed only an unofficial derivative.

@Kulfy The last line still contains the behaviour of Cinnamon Ubuntu.

@Kulfy I don't think mentioning what else was done makes a question off-topic. I think, but am not sure, that we have something on Ask Ubuntu Meta that covers this specifically. It is not a recent meta question. Anyway, having the information would have made it less likely for me to wrongly vote to close... but may make it more likely for others to wrongly vote to close. I am not advocating any particular change.
@Kulfy (unrelated to the above) Apparently it means is intended to mean mixing packages from different releases, to use the clearer phrase from the comment. The original comment was:
> It doesn't look like a dependency problem to me. It looks like a sources problem: 2.28 is Ubuntu 18.10/19.04, 2.27-3 is Ubuntu 18.04. Mixing packages from different releases like that is unwise, and may break your system quite horribly.

12:17 PM
@EliahKagan Then it may be worth keeping an eye on it.
@EliahKagan I assume that you were somewhat influenced by the my message that it's OT here in the chat.

Yes, I was. But I did then read the question and answer before voting. Though, to be clear, my close and undelete votes were still wrong--it was still a mistake.

@EliahKagan I think they are talking about the

Yes, the comment is clear, and they're talking about using software source rom multiple Ubuntu releases at the same time.
@SmokeDetector This seems fp rather than naa.
@pomsky I think the biggest problem with it is the title. The question might be salvageable.
@Natty tp

@EliahKagan yes, looks like an answer (though superficially it looks a bit like many "I'm having the same problem" type answers)
@EliahKagan hard to say what "as nice as possible" might be without a reference of some kind :)

@Natty tp

12:27 PM
I think I am pinging you unnecessarily to say useless things haha

Your pings are certainly helpful as otherwise it would be hard for me to know which messages you were replying to.
@Zanna Well, the reason I think it is basically okay (besides the title) is that if it had not used a subjective phrase like "to the max" in the title, and if it instead asked, "Can I customize GNOME Shell more outside of GNOME Tweaks and GNOME extensions?" then it would probably never have been closed. (cc @pomsky)
I would not want to reopen it without at least changing the title though.

oh... actually I didn't get outside of... until you just quoted it
that does seem ok

@Natty tp But this is very close to the line. Even if it had said, "I recommend waiting for this update," or "When this update is available, use it..." then it would probably be an answer. Maybe it should be converted to a comment?
@Zanna The body wording should probably also be improved then. Though it should probably not be changed to my example wording, since they're asking how to do it, not merely if it can be done. (The if question would get more abstract, conceptual answers. What they are asking for is more practical.)

@EliahKagan looks like a good comment

That's really on the line between fp and ne I think. Maybe my feedback is wrong.
@Natty tp
@Natty tp

is this post asking for help?

@user3140225 Btw I think you should still post your answer on that question. The existing answer does not explain what the actual problem is with a= $(($n % 2)).
Also, although I have no objection to that answer and I have not downvoted it, and it may be helpful to some readers, the technique it recommends is rarely practical if one does not already have a very strong knowledge of shell scripting. It's far easier to notice the problem by looking at the script than by looking at the output from bash -vx. The output of bash -vx really does not help at all unless one already know the answer. I think that question really needs another answer.
@Zanna I'm not sure. Probably. But the first paragraph seems like it contains a recommendation that might make it an answer (or make it so that it could be edited into an answer). I don't know what should happen with that post.

I think this off-topic question could be migrated to Super User.
Though maybe it's not high-quality enough to justify migration. I'm not sure.

should anything be done about the comments on that question?

At this point I'm thinking not.
Actually, they do go on for a while.
Maybe they should be moved to chat and all deleted as comments except the most recent one from the OP?

given the conclusion, I don't think they are useful at this point

Even the earlier ones that are less back-and-forth seem like attempts to answer the question. (Use something else instead of GNOME Shell for xyz reason would be an answer.)
The OP's conclusion?

the last one from OP will look a bit strange on its own
yeah
the OP's last comment suggests to me that "all this was an interesting diversion, but my question stands as it is"

1:40 PM
Maybe they should just all be moved to chat including that one then.

sounds good :)

@EliahKagan Even then the question is without any specific or focussed requirements and just mentions a vague & subjective goal of "making Ubuntu look as nice as possible". It would only attract "how-to" blog-post-like and perhaps "big list" answers imho. I certainly don't consider it reopen-worthy as it stands. (cc @Zanna)
(and the answer is completely about tweaking KDE, whereas the question arguably asks for GNOME)

@EliahKagan seems ok, so, done :)

@pomsky The question definitely does ask specifically for GNOME Shell. Answers recommending something else should say specifically why. (I'm not saying that proves the question is narrow enough.)
Should this closed off-topic question be migrated to Unix & Linux? The reason I am not sure and have not flagged is that it refers to logs that seem like they may be important but it does not provide any material from them.

hmm. Does it seem like it would be answerable without the logs?
I am inclined to think so, but, I don't know the answer

1:51 PM
I think "Is there anyway to make sure stop-service.sh finished running before server fully shutdown" can probably be answered.

2:09 PM
@EliahKagan Yeah, answers recommending justifiable alternatives are very welcome by me in general. But in this specific instance, since the question is too vague, it is likely people would come with all sorts tweaks (which they prefer) with all sorts of DEs, perhaps often contrasting each other's preferences.
After all "nice-looking GUI" is highly subjective. Some prefer to use transparent GUI elements as much as possible, some not so much. Some love 3D design, some find it repulsive and are all for flat design.

@EliahKagan I migrated it and commented

2:38 PM
@Zanna Thanks.

@pomsky I see your point - maybe my assumption that few people would be interested enough to answer that question is not a good assumption in any way

@Zanna The feedback is there, but there is no comment. In particular, that message didn't cause a comment to be added on metasmoke (as it would have in Charcoal HQ). I'm not sure it needs a comment, though.

Jun 24 at 17:21, by Eliah Kagan
It's possible to post messages to a room that one is not actually in, which is how SmokeDetector is set up for most of the rooms it posts in. Thus SmokeDetector posts here but does not accept feedback or commands here because it's not really in the room. Shortly after SmokeDetector posts here, the UI shows SmokeDetector's avatar with those in the room, but even then, it's not actually in the room.

4:29 PM
Thanks again.

I guess Smokey consider feedbacks from Tavern on the Meta too.

yep

@Kulfy Though apparently SmokeDetector joins and accepts commands in more rooms than I thought: almost half of the rooms it posts in, going by the number of times commmands: true and commands: false appear in rooms.yml.
I'm not sure what the considerations are for deciding if SmokeDetector should accept commands in a room, but judging by how many other rooms it now accepts commands in, we could probably get that turned on in here if we wanted.

@EliahKagan oh thank you! Sorry @Shree I did not know what you meant

@Kulfy Yes, that's what I do. But there are some things one cannot do with FIRE, such as leaving comments on posts' metasmoke entries by replying to SmokeDetector messages, reporting, scanning, and watching. Of course, one can go into Charcoal HQ to do these things.

5:54 PM
@EliahKagan I added an answer in the question. I used references from an interesting U&L question I found. Please correct me if I said something wrong.

@user3140225 The answer by HSchmale that you mentioned covers the case where the = sign is at the beginning of the second word rather than at the end of the first word, and it also applies to the case where = is its own word (i.e., the more common variant of the mistake where people pad = with spaces on both sides).
But in this case the = is at the end of the first word. So it is actually performing an assignment, just not the assignment the OP wished to perform, and not scoped in the way the OP wished it to be scoped.
That is, Bash doesn't try to run a program called a=. Rather, it treats a= as an assignment of the empty string to the variable a. Since not every word of the command is an assignment, Bash treats it as a command to be run with an assignment affecting the command's environment (basically, it sets it as an environment variable for the duration of the command).
So it tries to run a program whose name is 0, because 0 is the result of expanding $(($n % 2)), with the environment variable a set to the empty string. But there is no command called 0, so this fails. That's why the error message says 0: command not found rather than a=: command not found.

Yeah, you are so right. I am changing that right now. Thank you and sorry for having you write all this text.

No problem. I'm a pretty verbose person in general, so I don't think you can be blamed for that. :)
