@karel haha thanks a lot, looks much better, so here it is on U&L now

any more info to request? could it be answerable without further info?

For diagnostic purposes, Boot-Repair would enumerate all the GRUB entries, right?

oh yes, good idea
not sure whether it would show how they broke the default one, but seems well worth a try

Do you have a comment you use to ask for that info, that explains how to run it without having it make any changes? I do not.

we can plagiarise use Rod Smith's
Please run the [Boot Repair utility](https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair) and select the "Create BootInfo Summary" option. (*DO NOT* click "Recommended Repair," at least not yet!) When asked whether to upload the report, click "Yes," and then post the URL provided here. This will give us more details about your configuration, which is required to base an answer on more than guesswork.

@Zanna Thanks for migrating it. Now I'm waiting to see if the OP is interested enough to sign in to Unix & Linux in order to be able to reply to the question that I asked in my comment.
To reply to your other question strictly speaking I don't require any additional information from the OP, but it would make answering the question a lot easier for me if I could interact with the OP.

4:28 AM
@karel oh sorry, that question was referring to this post. The question that we migrated seemed to me answerable enough without further info from OP. Hope they will help everyone out and reply to you

@EliahKagan I think Elias' answer and avisitoritseems' answer have already covered that.

Lekensteyn's answer is a pretty good answer there IMO.

@Kulfy No it's not. OP is asking the reason of the issue. Retracting the close vote.

@Natty tp Thank you post.

1 hour later…
In this question, I'm not sure what they are seeing. The tone suggests they feel the issue is critical, but the way they describe it it seems very minor. Also, the comment on the answer suggests that this has nothing to do with VLC...

11:18 AM
@Kulfy I agree that there may be no need for you to post an answer now. Elias's answer, which was posted shortly after my chat message, covers the same ground as your comment. (I don't agree that the other answer contributes anything of value, though.)

11:37 AM
@Zanna I don't think I see what you mean about tone.
Is there enough information for that to get a useful answer?
@Natty tp
@Natty tp Although it could be expanded into an answer, this is both intended as a comment on another post and, as currently written, in effect such a comment.
@Natty tp
@Kulfy Sorry, I commented before seeing that particular chat message. That answer, like the others, is recursive, and * is not recursive.
@Natty tp
^^ Is there a bug report about how replying tp on a post that is only in Sentinel because it was manually reported causes Sentinel to display the agreeing feedback as a conflict?
@Natty tp

@Kulfy this one needs editing and this the target.

@Natty tp - though just barely, and I wonder if it should be edited to identify the specific driver versions and filenames (which I believe would be enough to make it an answer). I guess there's little need, since it lives on as a comment.

@Natty fp This wrong answer probably doesn't even qualify as NAA even under Ask Ubuntu's standards, but either way, answers that are deletable on AU only because they misunderstand the question are "fp" as far as Natty is concerned.

Do we have something for using a live environment to copy files off of an installed Ubuntu system that could be linked to in a comment here?

@EliahKagan I mean the please help, I am new to Ubuntu and have no other OS, but maybe I am overinterpreting
@EliahKagan I am thinking no

@Zanna I'm not sure if that's intended to express urgency or not.
@Zanna Should some specific information be requested?

I'm not sure what to ask... but they have removed VLC it seems
@EliahKagan I was just wondering if there were some other annoying effects they didn't describe
has been edited. Apparently, there is a hibernate package
I wonder if that answer can be expanded further... I didn't see that program mentioned in any other answer

@Zanna Either way, I think it should be edited again if it is to stay. It's framed as a comment and it's not clear from reading it that it's intended to be usable n its own.
not opinion-based, for which it would have to be "likely to be answered with opinions rather than facts and citations" (emphasis mine)
This question seems answered in a comment. Is it actually a duplicate? Should it get a CW answer?

12:28 PM
@EliahKagan I wonder why they deleted it... seems ok
@EliahKagan ugh not a dupe of that
maybe the commenter would be interested in posting an answer

It was a while ago, but maybe.

posting a CW would also be fine... but that user might come up with a better answer than their comment
I commented... but I may forget to check on that comment

@EliahKagan I commented but idk if I am asking for the right things

@Zanna Thanks.
@Natty tp
I approved this edit, which improves the post. But edit summary is unrelated to the actual edit, and seems intended as a new question.

12:52 PM
@EliahKagan should the edit summary be edited? or should something else be done?
perhaps the editor is the OP

1:04 PM
@Zanna I do not think the edit summary should be edited, if I understand what you mean by that.

sorry... I mean that the edit summary itself can be edited (I can do that), but I guess that would not make sense. Should we comment @ the editor on the answer about their question?

1:57 PM
@Zanna I figured that's what you meant. I do not recommend editing the edit summary. Pinging the editor in a comment may make sense. I'm not sure if the comment ought to cover the possibility that the editor is the same person as the OP but with a different account, or not.

Was this meta question self-deleted based on the idea that it's a duplicate of the question linked in my comment? I don't think they're more than somewhat related.

I don't know. I wondered why it was deleted
I can comment on deleted posts and the author will get a notification about it, apparently, if that helps

I suspect that is not warranted here.
I don't know what the guidelines are about it, but my guess is that most people would find it jarring for new comments to appear on their deleted posts and would feel pressured to act even if that is not anyone's intention.

dupes: 1 2 3 4 5 6

@EliahKagan Maybe I should edit the post and include a parenthetical in my edit summary. I'm not sure that's a good idea either though. The only significant edit it would need, if not deleted, would be the addition of tags, and on a deleted post that seems excessive if I'm not also voting to undelete it.

2:29 PM
@pomsky edited.
@EliahKagan I was referring to the grep in the latter answer. Using a bash script with cat and grep is just an overkill IMHO. I do agree that the other answer doesn't add any value.

Relating to that question (but not specifically relating to that second answer), you or steeldriver probably could still post one, since the existing answers don't cover -H (or -r and -R).

@EliahKagan Yes, indeed. I voted to close as dupe since I mentioned the use of R option in my comment. If we ignore * for a minute, it is unclear that whether the current directory has subdirectories in which the OP wants to search the pattern. I'd say it might be a case of border-line duplicity.
The post has 4 dupe close votes as of now.

I am taking some time off the site starting now. I will be back by Monday. Feel free to ping me!

@Kulfy thanks!

@EliahKagan I don't think it's useful, as after all it's a duplicate of the top/accepted answer. I'm not sure what muru's comment means. The deleted answer won't provide anything more or less. (cc @Zanna)
^^ I left a comment for muru.

@Zanna I have pinned your chat message until you return. Happy holidays.
(unrelated to above) It's worth watching if the domain www.linuxstall.com appears in edit suggestions. I have rejected two such edits today. In my understanding, the articles on the domain are plagiarised by the editor from original articles whose site is dead now. See this suggested edit, for example.
@jokerdino Out of curiosity, were you writing a query last month to check number of Q&A per day?
I found a query that you were editing.

3:52 PM
@pomsky Wasn't it the original answer that gave that solution?

@Kulfy i dont know what i was doing

I'm aware that you can use mod tools for that purpose but if you're interested I have written the query.

@EliahKagan Technically yes, it seems. I presume OP deleted their answer seeing the other answer (posted few hours later) was much more detailed. I don't think deleting this was necessary then (kudos for great sportsmanship). But I don't think undeleting it now serves any purpose either.
I am a bit baffled by muru's response to Byte's comment there. It seems to me muru's comment claims the deleted answer provides something more and addresses the extra "feature-request" Byte's comment asks for, whereas the deleted answer is a duplicate for all intents and purposes.

@pomsky Unless I'm reading the timelines wrong, A.B.'s original answer was self-deleted two minutes after it was posted, which was hours before the other answer was posted. muru's comment makes a lot of sense to me, since presumably A.B. deleted their answer based on the incorrect belief that it was wrong or not useful, and A.B. might have been interested to edit it to contain information not present in the newer answer.
My own suggestion that the original answer possibly should be undeleted is thus on much shakier ground that muru's comment at the time. However, it does provide some value beyond the current answer: it gives specific commands to install and run the program. How to do that is obvious to experienced users from the current answer, but perhaps not obvious to everyone.
But I don't plan to vote to undelete it without more information, nor do I intend anything I've said here as a recommendation that it be undeleted.

4:18 PM
@EliahKagan Ah, I overlooked the time of deletion. So my presumed reason behind the deletion is not correct, apologies.

dupe. @pomsky Reinstalling OS in this case is an overkill IMHO

@Natty tp

@Kulfy What I meant was personally I would perform a fresh-installation instead of recovering from the mess. Note that it's not about one specific application (gnome-control-center), running apt update and upgrade only once after adding the PPA would likely replace a boatload of essential packages.

@pomsky Indeed. But some may perceive that as the only option.
The question linked by nobody can also serve as a good target.
I didn't mean to target you in any way.
(unrelated to above) seems dupe

@Kulfy I already VTC'd, cannot add to the target.
