A: Time travel short story where dinosaur doesn't taste like chicken

DannyMcGThis is "A Statue for Father" (1959) by Isaac Asimov. From Wikipedia: A theoretical physicist and his son work on the theory of time travel, and experiment with a method of reaching back into time and retrieving objects More by serendipity than design, they manage to retrieve a nest of ...

Why’s this the dupe target when it’s way newer and both are accepted? Both are just Wikipedia summaries, anyway

@Stormblessed It's probably Jenayah's fault, considering that she was the first voter.

@Alex This is the one I was thinking of:

@Stormblessed It can easily be edited into a fine question.

@Stormblessed Merely being bad does not make something get deleted.

@Alex But how bad does something have to be to be deleted?

@Stormblessed Bad is not really the criterion, unless there's already a reason why the question can't/won't be salvaged,

3:10 AM
@Alex So that's why utter crap like this is deleted?

@Stormblessed That question presumably has no hope of being made on-topic.

@Stormblessed when the answers are the same, the questions are used to determine which one's the dupe
Basically here the tastes like chicken question has more details in the question
@Stormblessed so that no one uses chat oneboxing as a way to game the Announcer badges
@Alex no, but they're less likely to be eyeballed

@Jenayah But that doesn't explain why I would have more question downvotes than answer downvotes.

Hey @Jenayah I was going to ask a question but as I don't read many comics it might be quite daft so checking with you first
In the Harley Quinn #60 we see a note that is the writers talking through to the reader, outside of the narration
Is that sort of thing common?

Basically breaking the fourth wall, isn't it?

No, that would be the characters breaking it
Which Harley does quite regularly I think

@TheLethalCarrot kinda. Depends on the comic though, I've mostly seen that in "cheesy" ones such as Deadpool, Spider-Man
Not broody Batman stuff

@TheLethalCarrot opinionated narrator?

Well the writer talking to the read in the comic rather than the narrator or character breaking the fourth wall

SQB
Interesting discussion: is this the writer or the omniscient narrator talking?

Good point, to me it seemed to be the writer but could be the narrator breaking the 4th wall
It was the "very artsy we know" bit that made me think it's more the writer than narrator

SQB
12:54 PM
I would argue it's never actually the writer in any book; it's always a narrator.
That narrator may be very close to the writer, but it's always a narrator.

@TheLethalCarrot It feel narator to me but can't be fully sure until I read pannels before or after it

Well in some there clearly is more of a writer talking than narrator where there are things like "to know the backstory here read X issue Y!" but this is closer to narrator than that sure

@closevoters for the record, Googling harry potter fanfiction "cooking wand" yields a grand total of 7 results. That doesn't seem too broad. But if you think it is, please provide a couple of examples of fanfictions having 1/ Sirius saving kid Harry and 2/ using a cooking wand — Jenayah 45 secs ago
@TheLethalCarrot @DavidW ^ per my usual comment on voting to close story-IDs as "too broad"

@Jenayah You're the google master. I don't have the right history to get good hits, so I went based on the fact that there was a single potentially unique string and it had 2 question marks so the asker really wasn't certain about it.
No indication of what site they might have read it on, or when, how long it was...

@DavidW well it's more a matter of me being knee-jerk about "too broad"!="terse" :P
HEnce why I ask for examples when stuff gets closed as too broad. Don't take it the wrong way :)
(and we've had very terse questions which got just the right amount of specific stuff to be answered)
I guess you could say I have a similar relationship on "closing story-IDs as too broad" as @Alex does with "closing HP stuff as POB" :D
(except I don't cause wars on meta about it :P )

Yeah that doesn't seem too broad. I'd say if you're not certain, err on the side of open.

8:31 PM
@Jenayah I have atoned for my error by voting to re-open. (Especially since it looks like it's already collected a reasonable answer.)

Also, pinning the dogs thing when you're unable to deal with it losing the stars to the cats with dignity is just unfair!

@Alex Hmm. This would work better if the delay could depend on the time within the week, because forums like SE are always faster during US working hours.
@DavidW Totally agreed.
@Jenayah Last year when the national museum of Brasil burned down, that made me very sad. This Notre-Dame fire didn't bother me at all.
@Jenayah I just assume there are no causalties if the news doesn't mention it in the first paragraph. Note though that the news was already big while the fire was still burning, and they can't immediately be sure whether anyone's inside.
Case in point was the dormitory fire from a few weeks ago, where we found out about the one dead person only after we found out that most of the dorm would be destroyed.
Make that a few months ago, since it was in 2019-01.

9:33 PM
@Randal'Thor same as Napoleon, didn't know we were fighting, jest seemed clear enough :P
@Randal'Thor yes, mom ;p

Hmm, that makes three burned down buildings I know about in Budapest within a year: the dormitory, that storage building near my previous job, and the office building in the city.

Ah so when you're near a building, it burns within the year? Nice to know. Planning any vacation in France soon? Just in case I'd have to move out :P
@DavidW by the way, about my reaction to close review earlier: when I want to comment on others' reviews and they're pingable in chat, I usually do so (while trying to stay constructive of course). Once again, don't take it the wrong way. But if I'm bothering you, you just tell me and I'll stop straight away :D

@Jenayah What do you think where he went yesterday?

@DavidW (continued) And this goes both ways, of course. I'd be queen of hypocrisy if I didn't want others to ping me and comment on my own reviews/comments/posts etc. Just ask TLC, we've been exchanging reviews of reviews for some months now :D
@NapoleonWilson 😮

9:54 PM
@Jenayah Well, I'm not great at pushing back when other people are getting in my face, but as long as I'm engaged you're fine. (Nothing I've seen so far would suggest that won't continue to be the case, just to be clear.) And I get that you care about it, and I'm fine with that; far better that than simply not caring.

Oh, you're focusing specifically on HP questions?

Though it doesn’t really interest me since it’s external to the story.

10:11 PM
Well, there's a certain amount of arrogance in the implicit assumption that the author's choices about how she builds her world are suspect or incorrect...
So maybe according to the site it's not a bad question, but it definitely gets my hackles up.

Is there such a thing as correct or incorrect in that sense? I see it more as why would someone leave out a popular fantasy concept?
@Jenayah Manually. How do you think I compuled my list of Primarily Opinion-Based questions?

@Alex Because someone wants to make their world different from every other generic fantasy world? No-brainer.

@Alex you're insane

@Jenayah This.

@DavidW Sure, but that’s likely to be something the author discussed.
@Jenayah In a good way?

10:14 PM
@Alex c'mon, sounds like a for you

@Alex I suppose it depends on the author. I've met a few who don't really like talking about why they crafted their stories a certain way; it's about the story.

@Alex in an insane way.

@Jenayah What, to find a way to search by close reasons?

I guess J.K. Rowling is different, more open about her thoughts/reasoning.

(joke aside, nah, that was a jest, not an actual attack :P )

10:15 PM
Of course I'm talking about authors who were writing pre-"social media."

@Alex yeah

@DavidW Sure. I personally don’t care why an author chose to do something. I’d rather post an answer disagreeing with what she said she did.
@Jenayah Perhaps when I get to my computer.
@Jenayah I took it as a compliment.

Though perhaps one could argue that “why did she choose to write it this way?” Is Primarily Opinion-Based because the answer will just be her opinion.

Has anyone ever set a bounty on a question they answered to get attention and upvotes? I don't intend to do that, but it sounds possible

@Stormblessed you can, but it starts at 100 rep minimum

And I want to vote to close a question right now as Too Broad.
But it's also a (partial) duplicate.
But if I use a Too Broad vote I won't be able to close it as a duplicate.
Should I just close it as a duplicate?
