Q: Young adult book about girl in magical tower with bear

trapezewookieProbably 1980s. I remember a book that was one of those story-within-a-story novels. The 'outer' story was about a girl that lived (possibly captured) in a magical tower with a spiral staircase and a magical library containing all the books in the world, including those books that hadn't been wr...

TraxexWe see Sam revealing Jon's true identity to him at the crypts of Winterfell. There he refers to him as Aegon the Sixth. However, Aegon VI was the son of Rhaegar and Elia Martell and was born before Jon Snow. So Jon Snow should be Aegon VII Targaryen. Am I missing something?

.... someone actually made a paid service for spoiling new Games of Thrones episodes by sending anonymous messages to selected phone numbers. This world baffles me.

Not surprised, want to annoy friends or spoil things for people that annoy you
It's an odd way to do it but in today's world, yeah not surprised

People are crazy

@TheLethalCarrot oh, I am not surprised that there are individuals who would use it. I am more surprised that someone had the idea to actually make it as a paid service.

If you're gonna be an idiot (cos SE won't allow me to say what I want) might as well make some money off of it

10:16 AM
@TheLethalCarrot to be fair, I don't think the ones who made the site are the ones who want to use it. So it is more like they are simply using the "fools" who would actually pay for the pleasure of ruing a show

@Marvin ...two comments implying it's off-topic, and no close votes.

I tend not to close straight away for FPs to give the OP time to clarify if they need to as I've misunderstood or what not
Unfortunate as it is, people see [closed] as a negative and so it's better to try and help before it is closed and direct them to where they need to than closing instantly and driving them away completely

@Mithrandir people are being shy ?

In this case, the OP has prior participation on WB. You've left a comments explaining that it doesn't belong here. I don't see a reason to abstain from close voting then, if it's very clearly off-topic. (Which... this seems like a very clear question (and not a bad one!), just also very clearly off-topic.)
Also, it's not like you're hammering it. You're one of 5 users. It's not immediate.

I looked on their profile but somehow missed they'd participated on WB before

11:28 AM
@Mithrandir it's not you I'll remind that the first close vote isn't cast through review queue, innit?

I can't parse that sentence very well but if I understand correctly it is possible for the first close vote to be in the queue if someone flagged it

Well, yes, actually. But the flag has to be casted by a <3k and you can't know that since it doesn't display close(1)
Well, except for dupes.

Aye you wouldn't know

Point being, if one as a >3k casts the first close vote, they won't be able to review it.
And if they're 3k they will know if there already are pending CVs

Ah right I think I see what you mean now

11:42 AM
Wait was it genuinely unclear?
Yes, I do mean that some will refrain from voting just to wait for it to reach the queue, even if they reviewed it in another queue before.

@Alex I played it straight and answered instead of VTC, and someone took sufficient offense to downvote me. :)

@DavidW That was me. I automatically downvote any competing answers.
Just kidding.
In any case, my answer has 7 downvotes so you seem to be doing fine.

@Alex I'm only complaining to the extent that someone downvoting should leave a comment as to why. Yours has lots of comments. :)

2:42 PM
@DavidW True. Though most of them don't really relate to whether the answer is right or wrong. But if you're looking for commentless downvotes, check out the Meta post. My answer has 11 downvotes and not a single comment.

@DavidW No they shouldn't, they can but they are in no way obligated to. I've seen and had too many revenge downvotes, even when I state and wasn't actually the downvoter, that most of the time it just isn't worth the effort to comment, just DV and move on.

Q: Encouraging people to explain downvotes

ChrisFI used to get "upset" (though that is too strong a term) when I got downvoted without comment. If my answer isn't good enough then I'd like to know why. Not only does it improve the answer for the OP but it improves my knowledge too. Where the down-vote has been explained I've found it useful & ...

I enjoy being able to down-vote posts I don't care for without worrying about retaliation. And I really enjoy being able to leave honest comments without worrying that they'll be justifiably interpreted as evidence that I've down-voted. I would not like to see the two systems linked. — Shog9 ♦ Jun 28 '09 at 19:36
Pretty spot on to me

Also spot on:
@Jon: i'm not aware of any hard numbers. I suspect that the fear is greater than the actual occurrence - i've personally altered my commenting behavior primarily because of a few incidents that were later mitigated by the vote-pattern script; i just didn't like seeing questions i'd asked penalized for what i perceived as irrelevant reasons. Frankly, i doubt we can really know how much it would occur unless anonymous voting is completely disabled. See also: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1790/…Shog9 ♦ Jul 3 '09 at 21:42

My experience has been that more people stop leaving comments with downvotes the more they use the network because it just isn't worth their time. Most of the complaints about asking people to explain downvotes that I see come from new users
Whether that is because of revenge downvotes or someone arguing with them in the comments just because of a downvote I don't know

2:55 PM
I've used the network for a while, and I almost always leave comments when I downvote (if there's not already comments). Though granted I don't downvote that much.

@TheLethalCarrot Actually, that makes a lot of sense. I hadn't thought about it in those terms; I guess "revenge down-voting" hadn't occurred to me.
I'll hand in my "Battle-tested Cynic" card now. :)

...although if you have reasonable evidence that you've been revenge downvoted, you should raise a mod flag about it.

Q: What are the motives behind Cersei's orders to Bronn?

hotmeatballsoupThis question contains spoilers for Season 8 Episode 1. So my question:

@Mithrandir Of course but that's an aside to the main discussion here

Well, no - if you're worried about being downvoted as revenge, you should be aware that there are systems in place to take care if it if that actually happens.

3:01 PM
I might have had a case of revenge unacceptance.

yeah not much to do about those

Of course but that doesn't change the fact that it happens and that people give up on commenting because it happens

The effect that a revenge downvoter can have without getting caught is probably quite small.

I'm pretty sure the SFF one wants reopening but I don't know if there's some ST lore that means it is unclear so was waiting for some ST fan before VTRO

@DavidW Is there something I'm missing with that ST Q that makes it unclear?

@TheLethalCarrot Maybe I just need another coffee this morning, but even after re-reading I'm not sure what a correct answer would say.
"Because that's the way the props department made them based on the notes from the previous season's team?"

TBF an answer that found a quote along those lines would actually be pretty good haha

If I read correctly, that would be a correct answer to part of the question, but maybe not all of it?
Sorry, if my vote isn't well thought-out, at least it's a good thing there's a kind of meta-review implicit in requiring multiple votes.

4:12 PM
I didn't mean to imply your vote wasn't well thought out. The question was closed which means you're not the only one to think it is unclear. That is in part why I was asking if I did miss something

@TheLethalCarrot I think my brain de-railed at "then why keep the middle button the same?" since I can't see any non-trivial difference between them except the moire effect. Which, if it were generated from 2 screens a couple of mm apart (undeniably the easiest way to do it), would have an appearance highly dependent on the viewing angle.

4:29 PM
I mean if you can find evidence for that then that would make a good answer for why they look differently as well

@Jenayah I just heard the news from Paris :'(

@Randal'Thor no casualties, all that matters. If it's criminal then there are some sick fuckers out there. The rest... I personally don't really care, but I can get why some people would.

@Jenayah I always wanted to visit and never did.
Closest I got was CDG airport.

@Randal'Thor well, what they'll salvage will still probably be visitable

@Randal'Thor It was a decent cathedral, but Chartres is more historic and a better exemplar of gothic architecture and if you like stained glass more than gothic architecture you'd want to check out Sainte-Chapelle instead anyway...
The main thing that Notre-Dame had going for it was its prominent location in the centre of Paris.

6:50 PM
I'm not much of a connoisseur of architecture. But Notre Dame is, well, Notre Dame.

...would it be insensitive to say that it remind me of the ending of the movie version of The Hunchback of Notre Dam?

The Wikipedia page is already updated.

Folks, gotta ask. Headlines at yours are mentioning that there are no casualties, right?

@Jenayah I think so?

6:55 PM
@Jenayah Haven't seen a single mention of any injuries even.

The only headlines I'm reading are the ones in Stack Exchange chat rooms.
in The Awkward Silence, Apr 12 at 18:19, by Alex
And I get mine here.

No I mean... I know there aren't any reports of any casualties so far. But everything here is reading that the arrow fell, the thing is on fire, fine. But there is borderline zero headlines focusing about how nobody was hurt.

@Jenayah The New York Times doesn’t mention any, and they’re the best news source I now of, so probably
I think that it was after it closed for the day
“…there was no immediate indication that anyone had been hurt”

Nah, I know that (but thanks anyway).
It's a matter of French headlines focusing on the building before the people.
Because historical heritage is important, sure, but shit, "no casualties" should be the first thing to mention. People are more important than stone and wood.
There was a similar case a couple years ago and it got the same treatment. (no link 'cause personal info...)
And that felt wrong as well.
Ah well, ignore that. Just had to say it somewhere.

@Jenayah There are some people who would put themselves in danger to preserve an important location they feel strongly about. I believe that is their call to make...

@DavidW well, yeah. But in this case casualties could've been visitors, church people, I don't know. Not syaing tey wouldn't have been tryinng to save it but the "call" I was referring to is more the reporters' decisions

@Jenayah Ah, yeah, that makes sense.

Other than that, sure, people are very much in the right to endanger themselves to save a location.
(common sense still applying of course... Don't endanger others while dong that... etc, etc)

Was my edit to the story-ID guide good?

@Stormblessed yup, always useful to have a more complete guide :)

@Jenayah just thought it might not be welcome, as all the content in that answer other than it is by Valorum

I don't see why it wouldn't. The edit does add more useful info, and "author's intent" on this kind of FAQ meta post is different than general posts, I'd say.
I mean, if he wants to revert he'll be able to, that's his call. But it's good info nonetheless, and it's better to have all the info in one place rather than a new answer
I'm not entirely sure everyone reads the other answers. And I know for a fact that almost nobody reads the guide to begin with.
Heck, TLC and I (and probably a good bunch of other reviewers) pointed to it dozens of time, and by dozens I rather mean hundreds, and none of us has the Announcer badge for it.

Q: What are noblemen’s dueling canes for?

@Stormblessed No.

9:28 PM
I got a DV quite quickly but got an upvote first
@Alex but I lost two rep from one dv

@Stormblessed That's the same for answers.

@Stormblessed ? Why would you ask about a book/movie you didn't finish first? Like, maybe it's explained three pages later?

@Stormblessed Unless you get a lot more down-votes than up-votes it doesn't hurt.

@Stormblessed That would depend on whether the question is obviously answered in the book or not.

@Jenayah I’m asking about the first book more

9:30 PM
I have no idea if it is, though. It just seems unusual.

Because they noblemen were a big deal more then with the canes and stuff

Oh, and I lent it to a friend who was interested. I think I was a bit hoping she'd forget to give it back. Heck, I even told her she could keep it, but she returned it :P
It didn't live up to her expectations, it seemed.
@Stormblessed you loose 2 rep for any downvote may they be on a question or an answer. Question upvote is +5, answer upvote is +10. So, not really
Well, if you consider the ratio I guess you do lose more on questions, proportionnaly speaking

@Jenayah oh I guess I confused it with me downvoting an answer :p

Not really, I guess converting it to "real" URL makes it easier for the onebox process or something
Though... not necessarily
It could just be a "fair game" conversion or something

Specifically, my questions have received 80 downvotes.
Answers, I have too many of to count.
@Jenayah Is there any reason to believe that my late answers would be systematically worse than my other answers?

@Jenayah what’s LTTPS?
Low temperature thermoplastic materials?

@Stormblessed Late To The Party Syndrome
The original JMHPRW was sparked by an attempted LTTPS.

I always assumed they were sword canes.

@Stormblessed Where’s the M?

@Alex What does it mean, though?

@Stormblessed When you post an answer long after a question was active it usually doesn’t receive much attention. When you powt an answer right away it gets a lot of attention (especially if Hot). So the person who posted the answer later was late to the party, or perhaps even missed the party altogether.
