@Jenayah you used “himself” instead of “themself” in that answer
2 days ago, by Jenayah
oh sure but even if it's OK with you I still think it's better to use a general "they", for people who might not know, people who aren't binary etc

@Stormblessed She wasn't referring to a specific person.

@Alex nah he's right I was writing in French "common" language

@Jenayah There's a difference between referring to a specific person as "him" and referring to a theoretical person as "him".

@Alex Him or her (at least) is the modern usage

@Stormblessed Many people use "him or her" or "him/her". But some people find that unwieldy and/or don't want to bother to use two pronouns every time.

12:31 AM
"them"'s fine and universal

12:50 AM
@Alex themself works, not any longer than himself to say and just one more letter to type

@Stormblessed Some people don't like the grammar issues it causes.

1:10 AM
Some people genuinely don't, and some people use it as an excuse. Both types don't seem to consider why nowadays people try to use "they/them".

That's why the difference between a specific person and a theoretical person becomes important.

By using them for theoretical (unidentified as he/she) persons, you're more inclusive

Q: How can control of the elder wand be gained by killing OR by disarming the owner?

Jtier60Isn't it a major flaw in Harry Potter that Voldemort says control of the elder wand is gained by killing its owner and Harry says it's done by disarming the owner? Killing and disarming are colossally different strategies. Also,if disarming the owner would change ownership, I'd think that the wan...

When I say "theoretical" I don't mean someone who has not been identified; I mean that it's not referring to a specific person at all.
E.g. "If someone went to the store would he have to cross the street?"
The "someone" is not an actual person.

true, but as "someone" could be he or she, if the pronoun is irrelevant, why not make it "they"?

1:20 AM
Because "they" is plural.

mmh
true
but nitpicking shouldn't come before inclusion
inclusivity?
inclusiveness?
inclusivation?
inclusivism?
before being inclusive

You can switch off.

pops in singular "they" has been around longer than singular "you" ;) pops back out

@Alex ?

Whatever, I can't get into this at the moment. Now I sleep.

1:25 AM
@Mithrandir ah?
@Alex midnight snack?

@Jenayah Next time I can write "If someone went to the store would she have to cross the street?"

sure, but that doesn't make it any more or less inclusive than a "they"

@Jenayah more like "3:30 insomnia"

The singular they had emerged by the 14th century, about a century after plural they. It has been commonly employed in everyday English ever since then, though it has become the target of criticism since the late-19th century. Its use in formal English has become more common with the trend toward gender-neutral language, though most style guides continue to proscribe it.
When the antecedent includes both masculine and feminine, or is a distributive word, taking in each of many persons, – the preferred method is to put the pronoun following in the masculine singular ... Another way of referring to an antecedent which is a distributive pronoun [e.g. everybody] or a noun modified by a distributive adjective [e.g. every], is to use the plural of the pronoun following.
This is not considered the best usage, the logical analysis requiring the singular pronoun in each case; but the construction is frequently found when the antecedent includes or implies both genders. The masculine does not really represent a feminine antecedent, and the expression his or her is avoided as being cumbrous.
Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they or its inflected or derivative forms, them, their, theirs, and themselves (or themself), as an epicene (gender-neutral) singular pronoun. It typically occurs with an unspecified antecedent, as in sentences such as: "Somebody left their umbrella in the office. Would they please collect it?" "The patient should be told at the outset how much they will be required to pay." "But a journalist should not be forced to reveal their sources."The singular they had emerged by the 14th century, about a century after plural they. It has been commonly...
@Jenayah If you switch off then you're not excluding. You're just using one at a time. Unless you mean people who identify as neither he nor she?

yeah there's that too I guess
plus if you always use they you don't have to remembered to switch :)

1:37 AM
What if someone identifies as a non-they?

guess it's too bad, English language includes them into they, doesn't it?

Does it?

I thought it included everyone?
"ze"?
Never heard that one :o
Today I learned, I guess

There are an infinite number of pronouns as new ones emerge in our language.

That doesn't mean they wouldn't be included in "they"? (or anything else for that matter)
It's like set theory, no? There's always one that encompasses all the other ones?

1:45 AM
@Jenayah I'm not an expert in Set Theory.

me neither, no worries
I'm just pretty sure there's a thing about encompassing the others
alright who's math-pingable here. @Randal'Thor? @b_jonas?

But if I can choose to not be "he", "she", "ze", etc. then presumably I can choose to not be "they".

you can choose, but that doesn't make it semantically uncorrect?

Correct or not, it would mean that you're calling me by a pronoun not to my liking.

Hmmmm, true, that'dbe hypocrit
Better solution, get rid of prnouns.
or have a single prnoun of sorts. What language have those?

1:51 AM
@Jenayah Or don't refer to people.

Wasn't there something like this in Hungarian @b_jonas?

@Jenayah Oh. I was about to respond.

Very much so yes. To his defense, though, he fortunately picks a significantly fantastical element, rather than the plain dystopia the meta discussion was about.

Does that mean that something counts as science fiction or fantasy merely by quoting something science fictional or fantastical?

It counts as one on-topic quetion, which doesn't make all questions about the work on-topic.

A: Are works that aren't SF per se, but have occasional SFnal elements on-topic? (e.g. spy movies)

user56I suggest the following guidelines (improvements welcome): If it's marketed as SF, it's on-topic. If magic, futuristic science or technology, alternate history, or other sf-nal concept is an important part of the overall plot, it's on-topic. (Alice in Wonderland, Clockwork Orange, etc.) If the ...

2:04 AM
Hello

So you can ask a question about a fantasy aspect of a non-fantasy and you can aska question about a non-fantasy aspect of a fantasy?

> If the question is specifically about an sf-nal element, even if it's only a minor part of the work, it's on-topic.
> If there is a minor supernatural element (e.g. a fortune teller's prediction comes true, or someone sees a ghost, or a story for children involving anthropomorphic animals) but it's just a throwaway plot element that's not particularly relevant to the question, it's off-topic.

@Jenayah That seems more about works that are partly science fiction or fantasy rather than works which mention science fiction or fantasy.

Wait. Do they "mention" it, or do they inlcude it as part of the plot?
If it's a plot-driven work

@Jenayah Well the example from Plato is where someone is telling over a legend.
(Though the characters might think it's true?)
But it's not actually something that happens in the story.

@Valorum Sheckley's random? :P as per the "random author tags" - I thought the "common sense" and "relatively unknown = meh" indicated I was on the "don't create them" as well. @b_jonas Interesting,
That article doesn't seem to mention neuter or other genders?
Well, neuter only once.
But setting aside modern changes, I'd be a bit surprised if no language marked more than two genders
@Alex - Obviously if someone specifically doesn't want to be referred to by singular they, one has to respect that when talking about said person specifically. That doesn't make it a bad choice to talk about an unspecified person, though: there could plausibly someone who would object to any such choice, and singular "they" avoids both sexist and gender binary implications. I'd say that it's almost entirely people who believe very strongly in a gender binary who object to singular they, though.

She dismisses the (very) unequivocal advice of one of her in-house "experts" to immediately withdraw the capture team on the grounds they'll all be killed.. following which they a...

@Jenayah Sorry, I jsut dislike all these Harry Potter questions that ask about some detail of the magic rules that never comes up in the novels.
We have a ton of them.
Admittedly I've also written a few, so ...

Q: How much can outside help free a wizard from the Imperius Curse?

b_jonasSuppose you find out that an employee of the Ministry is acting under the Imperius Curse from a Death Eater. Suppose that they aren't strong of will, so they can't fight the curse on their own (like Barty Crouch Sr. eventually did). How much can you do to get the curse off him? Is there an eas...

well technically it's a SW question

@Jenayah Yes, that one is.
Also I hear I should try the Mistborn books if I want SFF novels set in a world with the magic system detailed.

Q: Can someone other than Professor Dumbledore teleport objects a long distance away?

b_jonasHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince chapter 3 describes how Professor Dumbledore picks up Harry at the Privet Drive house when he leaves the Dursley's for the start of his sixth school year. Harry packs his luggage for the school, but they don't take it with them to the visit to Horace Slugho...

^ Another one I asked.
But at least I try to set them up as if they're connected to some event that is described in the books.

Q: From what viewpoint do Omnioculars show past events?

b_jonasOmnioculars are magical eyeglasses that allow viewing events slowed down, or replay past events. They were introduced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire chapter 7, and in chapter 8, Harry was watching the Quidditch match through them. From what viewpoint do Omnioculars show events? Do t...

^ This too. Wow, I'm so hypocritical.

Q: Can an Animagus retain their wand in animal form?

b_jonasIf an Animagus transforms to their animal form, can they pack their wand such that they get it back when they transform back to human form even if they travel far from where they have transformed? I don't recall any example in canon that would decide this. We see McGonagall untransform in Stone...

^ I'm not the only one who finds that relevant, because Pottermore released errata about it.
Apparently Animagus is another of those spells that are unbalanced because it wasn't planned that PCs can have it, but of course that is never a good plan in the long term.
Yeah, we're still getting lots of HP fanfic identification questions.
