Farry SmithersCan Emo wizards and witches cast expecto patronum? Would they not be able to cast the spell due to there constant depressive state of being? Or would they?

@Jenayah what’d they do?

@Stormblessed well I found a story-ID answer by browsing the site, and the answer I got the work from was by Rand
so technically that's an answer I owe to Rand, partly :)

@Jenayah This?

nah the one I linked in my answer

A: Story Identification: Human Resistance to Conquering Aliens

Rand al'ThorI'm pretty sure this is Shade's Children by Garth Nix. From Wikipedia's description (emphasis mine): Shade's Children takes place in a not-so-distant future where evil Overlords have ruled for fifteen years due to a catastrophic "Change" which caused all people over the age of fourteen to sim...

Ok
@Jenayah Why isn't that the dupe target?
Seems better than the other one

'cause someone closed one as dupe for the first time and then people didn't want a dupe-chain, I guess.
I'll flag that, I guess, although this one is quite nice too:

KatdragonI think the book you're looking for is "Shade's Children" by Garth Nix. The basic plot is that fifteen years prior to when the book is set, the "Change" happened. @Pseudohuman what do you do?

@Stormblessed I am doing computation for the world.

@Pseudohuman what kind of computation?

A computation is an operation that begins with some initial conditions and gives an output which follows from a definite set of rules. The most common example are computations performed by computers, in which the fixed set of rules may be the functions provided by a particular programming language.
The field of computer science studies the nature of computation and its uses, among other things. A set of rules used to carry out a computation is known as an algorithm.

So it makes definitions?

Q: Looking for a Harry Potter Drarry Fanfiction from at least a decade ago

CelesteI can't remember all of the details but it entailed some sort of lockdown at Hogwarts and all the students are there. They have to stay overnight (may have been longer) and they play games like truth or dare or something similar. Harry is a bit dark in the fic and it turns into a Drarry story. At...

having fun with the bot? :P
> - It's a Drarry fanfiction
- It takes place at Hogwarts
- Students play games.
What's our "too broad" policy on fanfic-ID?
'cause when I encounter a "too broad" close vote I usually leave a comment like this...
@closevoters I'll agree that this question is terse, but "too broad"? If you're going to vote to close, please quote, say, 3-4 books 1) written in the 70s-80s 2) main character having a Kev-something name 3) said character having goat hooves. Then it'll be too broad. Otherwise, voted to leave open. — Jenayah Feb 17 at 21:39
(unless it's "an anime with girls and they have powers"...)
...but I don't want to go and look for fanfics like this to prove it's too broad -_-

@Stormblessed well, "can a depressive person cast a Patronus" might be on-topic, not necessarily POB. "can an Emo cast it since he's depressive" is unclear because emo doesn't mean depressive.

From "My Immortal."

@Stormblessed yep, it's on the queue already

@Adamant that only makes me think of the Evanescence song

@Stormblessed No.

also the name of a notorious fan-fiction

@Jenayah You're from France, right (not Québec)?

@Stormblessed maybe that's due to spam/RA flags being a tad bit more touchy than NaA, as thjey can trigger malus rep

@Stormblessed There's only one famous one.

@Adamant What's it a fanfic of?

what is everything a fanfic of?
Harry Potter

@Stormblessed mainly commenting about how this 70s singer is better than the current ones ;)

There are people who thing My Immortal was an intentional parody, but I think it was a "serious" attempt.

@Jenayah I was more just saying that it's not Opinion-Based. But to be fair, when I read the question, my reaction was "what's an emo"?

Feb 15 at 20:51, by Alex
@Jenayah Isn't it the responsibility of the question to be specific?

So @Jenayah do French Canadians have pretty different accents with French, or do they sound about the same to a French speaker?

3:28 AM
@Jenayah Flagged as out-of-context.

Vampire Potter (actual name) from My Immortal. Artist's impression.

Because of how different British/Australian/Irish accents sound from American
Reminds me, I should actually remember to read those books

@Stormblessed oh heck no, Quebec accent triggers uncontrollable laughs 'cause it's just so weird is quite different from France French. Between the accent and the idioms that may not be the same,... you can actually have a Quebec person and a French person not understanding each other.

Quebec was settled at a time when French back in France was significantly less standardized and uniform than it is now. So there are numerous features (in pronunciation and vocabular) of what became Quebec standard French that differ from what became the linguistic standard back in France.

@Adamant oO

3:30 AM
His scar is a pentagram.
And he's a goff

@Adamant nature knows best...
yeah, basically what @Buzz said, with more class than I did ;)

Fun fact: The earliest known use of the pentragram was as a symbol of the Pythagoreans.

@Buzz Like triangle guy?

Pythagore had a cult?

It wasn't exactly a cult, but he did have a secret society.

Pythagoreanism originated in the 6th century BC, based on the teachings and beliefs held by Pythagoras and his followers, the Pythagoreans. Pythagoras established the first Pythagorean community in Croton, Italy. Early-Pythagorean communities lived throughout Magna Graecia. Espousing a rigorous life of the intellect and strict rules on diet, clothing and behavior comprised a cult of following Pythagorean's Code. Peculiar, the Code's diet, prohibits the consumption or even touching any sort of bean or legume. Pythagoras’ death, disputes about his teachings led to the development of two philosophical...

mmmmh "already" makes a bit more sense

(not that I'm defending fanfic-ID, either, though)
Copy-pasted schoolwork is probably the stupidest in my eyes...

@Jenayah I've seen some individual questions Music Fans that I though were pretty stupid, but nothing that is as consistently stupid the way fanfic-ID is.

@Jenayah You don't need fluency to see that it's copied word by word from wiki.math.bme.hu/view/Informatika1-2010/Hazi4
This is the lazy kind of question asking, where he just copy-pastes part of the homework spec into a forum.

4:04 PM
:/

Sorry, wrong link. It was copied from the next homepage spec, wiki.math.bme.hu/view/Informatika1-2010/Hazi5
At least they did invent a nickname that doesn't obviously tell which student they are.
Now hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Tudakoz%C3%B3/… does need a bit more understanding of Hungarian to appreciate what a stupid homework request it is.

@Jenayah ok, got it

@Stormblessed mobile chat spotted! :D

That’s the class

When I was in elementary school, we did say "Language Arts," which was subdivided into "English" and "Reading." In high school, it just became "English." My kids' schools use the abbreviation "ELA" for "English Language Arts" at all levels.

@Buzz it was LA until high school for me, then it became English

4:34 PM
@Stormblessed The asker didn't know the answer?

@Alex it’s literally the definition of plagiarism, passing off something as your own

@Stormblessed That doesn't mean the asker knows that. Also the question is lacking in some details. Maybe the situation was one in which he/she wasn't really passing off someone else's work as his/her own.

Q: How is a "positive question record" calculated?

TravisFor the badges Curious, Inquisitive, and Socratic, you need to ask varying numbers of well-received questions on different days. You also need to maintain a "positive question record" On Stack Overflow, I have enough well received questions for the Curious badge, and am almost there on Math SE....

That's confusing
I guess I'm never getting Curious
