@Rob Using :<msg id> reply should still work, as I did in that message
@Rob but, we're using Matt's regex library

@Rob What's the need to change anyway?

@Rob this doesn't seem mature enough even if we could otherwise consider a switch. Also, like iBug remarks, we are using some features from regex which are definitely not in this library
I don't think we are particularly married to it but it's in many places in our code base so switching is not a simple matter of drop-in replacement
so any argument around "we could" is pretty moot without a compelling demonstration of why "we should"

If you're wondering about ReDoS vulnerability, we could just spam \b and hope it gets eased.

@Rob You talking metasmoke or smokey though?

@Rob A ReDoS is some specific content that causes a regular expression to take a long time to match. One example is matching a string with a length of a prime with (..+)(..+)+. When the post gets very long, the regular expression engine has to backtrack a lot, thus making overall matching progress very slow. OTOH, matching a post like ababab... with a regular expression a isn't going to be any slow, due to no possible backtracking during search, as there are no repetitions in the regex, and even if so, there'd be no need to backtrack.

it's quite possible that we have a bad regex which goes into explosive backtracking but as a first approximation we need to find something which can repro the backtracking

@Rob the Metasmoke comment on that says iBug pushed a fix, so if there was a problem, we should have a workaround for that now
that is not to say it is the only explosive regex we have, but again, in order to investigate, we need to find samples which repro the problem

well, your suggestions are good, but more important things are: 1. ReDoS isn't that serious a problem so far 2. we're relying heavily on our current library, so unless the reason is very convincing, we're not going to move to another. This, however, doesn't deny the possibility of running two parallel, but we still need some good reasons since we already have a very powerful one.

Fabian RölingI have a number sequence puzzle in mind and I'm so far unsure how many numbers to post.
