12:57 AM
Hello, is this the main site room?

my googlefoo is failing me, and it's 2AM here and i was just hoping to get some linuxhelp/advise - is it still a good time?
Also how are you doing @JourneymanGeek?

aight.
Ground rules here are its fine to complain, and ask general stuff, but the moment it starts turning into a question or is a Q&A pair, it gets asked on the site ;p
but that out of the way, carry on

I am trying to find out if there is a way to display the contents of a dynamic motd after the usershell has loaded, e.g. doing whatever sshd does together with pam_motd myself
I love the clippy plugin

1:09 AM
Also I can try typing that out as a question, but I'm at a stage where I am not even sure what to look for - so there might well be questions & solutions I simply can't find with my jargon

I'm half certain that's part of the login script
naw, I think we're good

as far as I understand it it's part of the stuff PAM does

ooh cute
ls
look in /etc/update-motd
I searched for the keywords ubuntu motd edit, since if you need to edit it, you need to know where it is

gimme a sec
my bad, shoulda said debian stretch somewhen during my whailing

ah alas
Its probably a static text file somewhere

1:19 AM
modern pam_motd does mostly copy the behaviour of the ubunut pkg you mention as far as I understand in the meanwhile, but what I can't fathom is whatever it's using to put together the runparts in the /etc/update-motd.d folder and outputting it :/
oh wait run-parts is a tool actually

nvm solved it

quack
now work it out, and post a QA pair for the next poor sod with the same problem ;)

can just run: run-parts /etc/update-motd.d to get the outputs properly... will do a pair when I can think again

Bob
1:41 AM
@rahuldottech are you sure they mean soldering? more likely a spot weld.

1 hour later…
3:08 AM
Where can I find documentation to explain what all these firewalld rules are on my iptables?

ooh...
I was wondering the same thing at some point ._.
howtogeek.com/177621/… is a decent place to start

sick thanks!

this looks good too! More in depth, but the actual site is down
I use a frontend (firewalld) cause for most part I consider iptables a little too much of a pain to maintain ._.
Ubuntu has UFW but... that's a path to pain and swearing IMO
but its useful to know proper IPtables since you can often do more complex stuff with 'raw' iptables commands even with a front end

I just wanted to on my host forward packets to a virtual network and masquerade it to another interface.
using firewalld

3:23 AM
.....
rofl
If you had said that earlier...
like
duuuuude

Naw the stuff u linked are still helpful

Its on a physical bit of kit...
but I actually documented me doing something super similar

dam your a god for that

(which is amusing cause I'd totally have pointed you at that)

ty for that link

3:25 AM
lol. Walking in the footsteps of giants XD
I basically took the ars technica router guide, and simplified it a fair bit with more modern tools

lol

(also gives me a kick when someone else is doing the same crazy things I do ;p)

Bob
oof

sounds like its dead
You should try reformatting it XD

Bob
@JourneymanGeek S.M.A.R.T. comes back clean
chkdsk seems fairly happy so far
I think ntfs-3g just ... tripped over

3:30 AM
... or bad cable?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek original short USB 3.0 cable
barely used
could be the miniserver overheating I guess
I had it run downloading/muxing overnight

Bob
it's only a N3160 lol

eh, my download box was that
never had any issues

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea I feel like it's a ntfs-3g issue
probably should've just mounted a remote dir

3:32 AM
(I need to rebuild it at some point... I'm debating sticking downloading on the router if qbitorrent would get a rss webui ._.)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ehhhhh... I like to keep my router slim

@Bob I kinda have the resources for it
its pretty overkill for routing.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek still better to not mix in other crap that'll have a chance of crashing the thing

also means I only have one 24/7 box
meeeeeh
that thing is a tank
and I built it. I can troubleshoot it to some extent.
could always stick it in a docker container? ;p
There's a big gap between a crappy 1ghz arm or mips processor, and a low end old laptop processor. I probably could have saved myself some money and gotten a j1800 probably
amusingly the only reason there's much processor load is netdata...
and by much I mean 1% on one core
@Bob so far I've not had any issues since I set it up that couldn't be fixed by SSHing into it ;p
I think I had firewalld not come up once after a reboot
(hm, mental note - see if I can dualboot this off a USB key so I have a backup ;p)

2 hours later…
5:39 AM
@MichaelFrank you online?
So, CN510 is indeed a connector to the batteries, you were right ;p

5:54 AM
BUT LOOK AT THOSE EMPTY AUX OUTPUTS!!!!

@rahuldottech though they might have different versions on the same boards with differnt firmware

@JourneymanGeek possible, but I can't find any information on about other versions of this keyboard, or other keyboards using the same board

failing which, try breaking it out and checking? ;p

@JourneymanGeek I AM SO EXCITED THIS IS GOING TO BE FUNNNNN

._.
This was me a decade ago.
I've gotten old? ;p

6:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm wondering tho
I'll have to also solder on two dozen other components to get the AUX outputs to work?
(see image)

I doubt it, but you could probably follow the traces
oh
I see what you mean
Yeah
you'd be able to figure out what you need from what's there ._.
but not that simple, yes

Mhm. No info about those AUX outputs in the service manual

course not

I'm also disappointed that no circuit bender on the internet seems to have even tried to mod this keyboard
@JourneymanGeek quick question
This PATA cable has three connectors on it

6:08 AM
Two at the ends, one in the middle. It doesn't matter which I connect, right?

Oh
SORT OF
One end's fixed. The other end less so...
assuming you use CS
unless it matters
One end always goes into the motherboard

Ah, ok. And the other two are the same?

the two that are closer together are set to primary and secondary
dosen't matter if you use the cable select setting, they matter if the devices are set to primary (M) and Secondary (S) manually

Hmmmmmm

There's colour codes
I know secondary is often grey...

6:11 AM
Black, Grey, Blue?

Parallel ATA (PATA), originally AT Attachment, is an interface standard for the connection of storage devices such as hard disk drives, floppy disk drives, and optical disc drives in computers. The standard is maintained by the X3/INCITS committee. It uses the underlying AT Attachment (ATA) and AT Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) standards. The Parallel ATA standard is the result of a long history of incremental technical development, which began with the original AT Attachment interface, developed for use in early PC AT equipment. The ATA interface itself evolved in several stages from Western...
Yup
Black is primary, Grey is secondary, Blue connects to the motherboard

Welp

Sorry, I think the last time I used a sata cable was over a decade ago.

Also Get off my Lawn.

6:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek ok what if there are only two connectors?

hmm
Probably shouldn't matter

See, what I'm trying to do is
Replace a cable which has only two
With a longer one, which happens to have three

oh go with motherboard end and primary
should be safe

Ok ok ok thx

also set the new device to the same setting as the existing one as far as M/S/CS goes

6:17 AM
omg so many screws
@JourneymanGeek What's M/S/CS?

Master/Slave/Cable Select
I'd guess it's on master mode.
CS may or may not work
so set to master, use black and blue.

Where... do you change this setting?
Ah. Mhm.

jumpers! Back of the drive!

Ah. This isn't even a proper drive, it's a drive emulator
Man
Lol

or the equivilent. If its meant for these devices its probably got sane default...
waiiiiit
Is this an IDE cable or a floppy cable?

6:19 AM
ARE THOSE DIFFERENT?
See man

Yes
You wouldn't know this

There's a floppy drive. I'm replacing with a USB floppy emulator

a floppy cable should have 2 ends and a twist in the middle

Gimme a minute

and has fewer pins
@rahuldottech for the record, I don't think you were born the last time I had an internal floppy drive on a PC
3

6:26 AM
FML MAN
THIS IS A DIFFERENT CABLE ARGHHHHH
@JourneymanGeek Can't use PATA in place of floppy cable?
Ah of course you can't

DIfferent sizes
Welp. Now I have to go dig up my old desktop PCs and see if they have a longer floppy cable

Its ok. least it isn't a scsi cable.

6:28 AM
AFTER DISCOUNT!?

I think they're out of stock and don't think anyone was dumb enough to order at that price

ya, that looks like it'll work

WHY COULDN'T THEY HAVE JUST USED A PATA FOR EVERYTHING

cause floppies existed before IDE
you'd literally need a controller card for hard drives. Every PC came with a floppy drive, and you'd run the whole OS off a single floppy
IDE was a improvement. Also more complex.

6:32 AM
Argh yeah ok makes sense
I'm gonna go check my old PCs for longer floppy cables now
Be back in a bit
SIGH

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lxd pls
my ER-X (dual MIPS) sits about 10% in a suboptimal config

@Bob I might want docker elsewhere for some stuff
and running similarish environments is easier ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek el, docker in lxd if you must :P
I'll never run docker directly on host

6:48 AM
anyway, headed to india at the end of the month, and the one feature I need to get this working is ....
there's the API but no front end

From what I can see, the CD drive also uses a floppy cable

0_0
It should be an IDE cable
Pata cable for you younguns ;p

From a PC older than me that belonged to my dad.
I found a cable from a PC older than me that belonged to my dad.
Never thought I'd have any use for this PC, but kept it because I hate throwing electronics out
From what I can see, the CD drive also uses a floppy cable

@JourneymanGeek wait all my messages aren't getting sent

you're typing too fast
no

Had to copy and paste messages, chat was messing up on shitty mobile network

6:56 AM
cd drives pretty much use IDE + an aux cable

Anyway, yeah. No. This one isn't IDE

fun thing is you can connect the aux out cable as a line out and play music cds off many cd players
SCSI? 0_0

Ah it's IDE, I was wrong
Just a very primitive cable which looks a lot like the floppy cable
@JourneymanGeek so that twist?
It's not present in the old cable which I took outta the synth

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait. aux cable?

7:08 AM
might be non standard
@Bob yup

Bob
oh you mean the old CD (as in audio CD) drives?

@JourneymanGeek it isn't, because it works with a generic floppy emulator

Actual CD rom drives could do that too

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea the old ones that supported audio CDs as a special case

7:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek is right the old CD drive on this PC has aux output

Bob
slightly newer ones had a 3.5mm on the front too, iirc

@Bob yep, this one has it out front

@Bob basically would connect to the sound card directly

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya, I know those

but you could use it as a line out

Bob
7:09 AM
they were effectively two drives in one
the audio cd part was pretty much independent of the data part

@JourneymanGeek help I wanna die now

Bob
@rahuldottech erm it says FDD

@Bob ....so?

@rahuldottech at this point...
just try it?
I might be wrong
Its been like... 20 years since I installed one.

Bob
5183-9427 seems to be an HP part number for a FDD cable...

7:13 AM
@Bob correct, I just took it out of an HP PC older than me.

Bob
also I'm vaguely amused that these guys still list it store.emprgroup.com.au/p-162887-5183-9427.aspx
> Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
No further action is required.
Ok pretty sure it was just ntfs-3g dying

@JourneymanGeek so there's something wonky that I noticed
But I can't explain it in text
Or English, probably
The orientation of the connector on the shorter cable appears to be flipped

er ya
a lot of these cables are non standard

@JourneymanGeek but works with standard floppy emulator?
ARGH
I'm just gonna try this
@JourneymanGeek when aligning the red wire ^

7:28 AM
@rahuldottech the device end may be non standard

@JourneymanGeek very possible
I managed to orient the stuff in such a manner so that the shorter wire is fitted comfortable and not under strain anymore. So I'm gonna leave it in.
\o/
One task done.

7:42 AM
Also wtf man
It appears the last guy I gave this keyboard to to change the keys stole all the screws?
Wtf

8:08 AM
@rahuldottech Did it have a battery?!

@MichaelFrank Not on the upper motherboard, it didn't
And the bottom one is mostly speak and output circuitry, so I doubt that it would
ARGH WHERE DO I FIND MATCHING SCREWS FROM THO
I WANNA GO BEAT UP THAT MAN FROM THE SHOP GODDAMNIT

8:36 AM
@rahuldottech I was also right that it was a cap. :P

@MichaelFrank yep

8:54 AM
Ok, how can I figure out what a screw is called?
Do I measure it with a ruler and just search for __mm?

In my laptop, there are two PC4-19200 modules (4Gb each). If I replace one of them with a PC4-21300 module, will it work?
The modules are by Hynix, so I'll buy a Hynix one.

@rahuldottech Do they fix into plastic or metal?

9:10 AM
@MichaelFrank all plastic
Different kinds and sizes

9:29 AM
The manual might have names for them, I'll look for them in a while

@CowperKettle yes, it'll just run at 19200
@rahuldottech also need to worry about pitch, thread shape...

@JourneymanGeek last three have the same threads
First one has slightly smaller

ya but when you buy it

Yep. I dunno which shop would store these
Hardware shops here aren't impressive

eh, I literally know one store here that would have it, or know where to find them

9:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek So I thought! Nice!

@JourneymanGeek welp

SO MANY TYPES

10:06 AM
@rahuldottech yup
now, its a machine screw
but but
It could also be JIS standards

10:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek there's a market nearby with a bunch of hardware stores, so I'll go to all of them and see if I can find something
I think something with very similar threading would probably work too, since it's screwed into plastic? Might be a bad idea.

10:35 AM
ehhhh prooobabblllyyyy

@JourneymanGeek probably a bad idea or probably might work?

should work.

Ah. Well, let's see.

Bob
11:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek you can get measuring tools for most thread pitches
but then you get into angles, and yea the thread cross section...
those look like wood screws, not machine screws

Wood screws would be pointy no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek only if self-tapping
hm, maybe more like plastic
idk, it doesn't look like a standard machine screw thread :P
but who knows with older stuff

11:55 AM
replacement washing machine \o/

Wheee. 2TB SSD installed
And performaing as badly as expected
MVmE, PCIe v3 x4.... and occasionally down to 2MB/sec

Bob
@Hennes what is it?

Granted, QLC drive and I am pushing its worst workload. Copying 1TB from another SSD. And QLC is not precisely write friendly when its SLC gets exhausted
Intel 760 2TB

Bob
ah
