@Makyen Chat alias, of course
Smokey does not tell MS what's been ignored

2:52 PM
Really?
Hrm

That's what I thought, but one can hope.

I'm pretty sure there's some "ignore-" feedbacks in MS

The ignore- feedback does get from SD to MS. The issue is that an ignore- through the MS API doesn't get to SD.

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM feedbacks WHERE feedback_type LIKE '%ignore%' returns over 1k

oh then
ig is identical to ignore-, afaict

@thesecretmaster I can ensure you it's an actual ignore feedback with reponse suppressed.

Ok, sounds good

To be honest, I'm not sure that it's a great idea to have an alias for ignore. ignore feedback should be relatively rare, and shouldn't be a substitute for fp, due to the lack of handling in MS (e.g. searches, determining weight, etc.). Having an alias makes it significantly easier, but I think it should take effort for someone to give ignore feedback, otherwise it may become a bit to "normal" to do so.

and make ignore longer
like, ignore-force

For instance, my use of ignore is almost always on posts that are detected solely based on regexes which I wrote, after evaluating the rest of the post. While I'll occasionally do one on something else, it's usually because it's been edited and re-reported.

@Makyen I saw you use it a lot so I gave it an alias

3:02 PM
and that's why we should ask the community first :P

@iBug I appreciate that. It does make it easier. I'm just not sure it should be easier.

[20k] [ignore-pls] [c++]: Test test test by test test test 2018-02-30+23:59:59Z

as I said above, my humble opinion is that, as MS is intended to contain Smokey's contribution history, ignore should be used sparingly

If we get things on the MS side to treat it like an fp, then that might be reasonable. Better would be to have the ability to tell SD not to report a post again for the specific reasons it was reported. For instance, there's not an ignore that I've given where I wouldn't want SD to report it if it was edited to trigger other detections.

@EriktheOutgolfer It does, if the chat room is associated with a specific site. CHQ is not, so it's not supported in here.

3:09 PM
¡igualmente!

night o/

@Makyen actually, meta-tag formatting would make sense, but, unfortunately, chat.Meta is a different server than chat.SE

It's not the chat server, it's the chat room (AFAIK). The room has to be associated with a specific SE Q&A site. When the chat room is associated, then the tag formatting works.

I mean, meta-tags would point to Meta.SE, but Meta.SE's chat isn't on the same server as SE's (and Codegolf.SE's, OpenData.SE's, etc.)
but, for one, I don't think the chat server should be a hurdle to this

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer: Should I install Ubuntu on a Logical Volume? by Ayesha Noor on askubuntu.com

sd k

@EriktheOutgolfer While I agree that ignore should be used sparingly, I'm not in sync with the way that reason is articulated. ignore causes SD (actually only the current SD instance, unfortunately) to not report the post again. The primary benefit is that the post isn't reported again when it's edited, or when re-scanned due to an answer being placed on the question (or another answer being placed on the same question). With fp feedback those do result in additional reports (improved recently?).
Ideally, IMO, fp feedback would result in the post not being reported again for the matches which were previously reported. Basically, if humans have already evaluated the text being detected by those reasons, then it's really unlikely that the evaluation has changed, without triggering new reasons or changing the detected text.

@EriktheOutgolfer With the SE API, you have a quota of the maximum number of requests which can be made in 24 hours. A request for the the data on an answer can only get the data for that answer. A request for the data on a question can get complete data for the question and all answers to that question. Thus, when a new answer comes in, instead of requesting data for the answer, SD requests data for the answer's question and all other answers, thus scanning everything in the question and all answers.

isn't the quota around 20k?

3:33 PM
not 'around', exactly.

btw most of us mortals only get around 300 requests per day, and a bot gets special-cased to 20k >_< :P

20k, yes, but it would still be consumed if every post was individually fetched. Thus, in addition the the above, there's a queue for each site (requests can be for only one site at a time, but up to 100 questions & all answers).

@EriktheOutgolfer 10k if you get an auth token.

@EriktheOutgolfer No, us mortals get up to 60,300 requests per day.
Assuming that you're only using 1 IP.

what? every time I've tried connecting to the SE API, the remaining quota has always been less than 300

3:37 PM
The 300 limit is only for requests from the SE API which don't have an API key, which you can easily get for any application/script. For requests with an API key, but without an auth token, the limit is 10k requests/day/IP.

oh, and Smokey uses 2 IPs?

In addition to that, each user can have up to 5 additional 10k pools which are applied to applications/scripts which have an auth token. With an auth token it's an additional 10k requests/user/app (up to 5 such pools). Details here

@EriktheOutgolfer Currently each instance of Smokey has its own IP address

@EriktheOutgolfer Smokey has a special dispensation to have 20k requests using 1 IP and API key. Technically, that means that each instance (all of which have different IPs, to the best of my knowledge), has up to 20k requests/24 hours.

3:42 PM
and...how does SE recognize that it's Smokey doing the request and not some deceiver or even just somebody else?
also, how does it know of new posts? RSS feeds?

So, technically, it would be possible to have the various SD instances consume 20k requests * # instances.

@EriktheOutgolfer The websocket which is used on the realtime feed
@EriktheOutgolfer All the smokey instances have the same API key

@EriktheOutgolfer That would be based on the API key. But, frankly, there isn't all that much benefit to having the 20k requests (each person has up to 60,300 per 24 hours, without hopping IPs). So, spoofing wouldn't really give you that much benefit, but it might be useful in some situations (e.g. if you want to remain anonymous).

so, if most get 60,300 requests with an API key, why does Smokey only get 20,000? because it's not human?

3:49 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer As I understand it, it also necessary to do some additional trickery, in addition to the realtime feed, due to some SO posts not making it into that feed. However, I've never looked at the code for that, so I don't know. I'm just regurgitating what's previously been stated here and elsewhere.

@EriktheOutgolfer Well, that's 10k requests shared by all requests from the IP address which have an API key, but don't have an auth token. Then it's up to 5 pools, each an additional 10k, for requests made by the user using up to 5 separately authorized applications with an auth token (tied to the user, not the IP). And then 300 requests from the IP that don't have an API key.

@thesecretmaster uh, an RSS feed would be nice

@EriktheOutgolfer Yeah, but an RSS feed needs to be polled, whereas a websocket pushes out new posts.

3:57 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer I assume that it's 20k because at some point SD was running out of requests at 10k and an SE CM said, OK, let's raise it to 20k. But, I wasn't associated with the project at that point, so I don't know how it really went down.
However, I agree that it would be beneficial for the quota to be higher. It would allow us to be able to use queues that are shorter on all of the lesser active sites, because sometimes spam posts sit in the site's queue for an extended period of time waiting for one or more additional posts to come in to fill the queue.

well, Undo might know, but I don't feel like @-ing him for a third time in a short period :P
